Some Opening Day Glitches... But comments are working (we think)

September 25, 2006 -

Okay, we are open for business at the new GamePolitics.

It has been a hectic day here, spent dealing with a number of glitches and we're far from done. But at least we seem to be up and running and still managed to scoop the rest of the game press on the New Mexico nonsense lawsuit.

Specifically, I can't figure out why people weren't able to comment, but I've opened the restrictions that required commenters to be logged in, since logging in seemed to be the issue. So please test out commenting...

Also need to add more of the GP content listed on the sidebar... that's on the way.

Testing, testing. 1...2...3.

It's odd, but http://gamepolitics.com comes here very nicely, while www.gamepolitics.com goes to the old site - at least for me...

Probably a DNS propagation thing, which can take up to 72 hours to fully complete, or so I'm told.

My DNS must be up to date, both addresses work fine for me. but I still can't comment...

Looks like you can now. And if you can read this, so can I.

Or maybe I can? Firefox seems to be having refresh issues I guess

testing?

I wanted to set this up so everyone's first comment had to be moderated and then you'd be good to go forever after...

The login piece seems broken, though... so now you should be able to comment but you have to leave your name and e-mail (the e-mail is hidden)

like so?

Testing..testing...1,2,3,4... Can you 'hear' me? Ok. bad choice of words. Alright. Can you read this??

Looks good. But will we eventually have to log in first? And what restrictions are in place to keep the world's biggest troll out?

ah, I see.

Test???? Oh no! A test! I can't take a test! I'm not ready! I haven't studied!

Oh man i really do hope he decides to use GTA SA.

Yeah, I had registered and everything and It looked like it was reloading the same page over and over telling me to log-in. I then read how you needed to doenload wordpress to do blog work(?) and thought I needed to download word press to add comments. I didn't download anything. But I guess this means we wont need to.

...sigh. I miss the fourms already.

RISE FROM THE GRAVE

Test post.

So I'm liking the new digs, but it's gonna take just a tiny bit of adjusting from the the nested comments of LJ.

And Cecil, I hear you, I miss the forums too.

How do I posted comment?

Dennis, is there a setting that causes comments to be numbered?
It would help as newer comments are made.
Doesn't Joystiq use WordPress also? It seemed like when I was playing around with setting up a profile, there were a list of WordPress blogs, and Joystiq was one. And their comments are numbered.

Just curious.
Thanks in advance.

Meh, I tried registering, no email, I tried to do ap assword retrieval, n odice, I can't log in >.

The new site looks nice.

One thing I don't like, as compared to the old, is that how the comments no longer nest. The threads made it easier to read.

So, what's being put in place to keep Jack from posting here? I'd imagine he'd be able to post whatever he wants while the commenting system is being worked on.

Can anyone read this? If so, cool.

Some suggestions:

Maybe make the gp- banner link back to the homepage, and at least add a "main" link on the side bar. Also look into getting the get bar to work on all of the "story" pages, I don't see it in any of them.

The multimedia page really could just use some left justifying(having them trail like that looks like a mess to me) and maybe add table boarders to clearly separate the entries(pic, description, etc).

Otherwise, things look ok for now.

I have an account but its not exactly letting me stayed logged in. :/

yes, much tweaking to be done. I need a WordPress expert..

:-(

We'll have to do without nested comments for now, same as Joystiq. BTW - I don't think they are Wordpress...

Forums back VERY SOON

I've had no trouble opening the new site on my laptop (with Windows XP Pro). However, when I try opening it in either Safari or Firefox on my Mac (Intel-based iMac), I get the old format (with no comments sections).

You could ask Grumpy.
http://www.grumpygamer.biz

He runs Gumpygamer.

Nice work Dennis, the new design and setup is sweet. One suggestion/request though: Could you make the top banner link back to the front page?

A test? OH NOES, I did not study!

Meh, the new site looks pretty good... I guess. The new comments are nice though! I can point out Jack's obvious faults with much more clarity now, thanks!

when will the forums be back?

WHERE ARE MY FORUMS?!

Makes it easier to post, rather then having to log in to LJ all the time. Looking good Dennis. Can't wait for the Forums to come back online.

Congrats on the new setup, I like what you done with the place. Needs more hamsters though.

@Dedre.... hey, who doesn't need more hamsters?

:-)

Ooh, does this mean I can finaly comment on articles again?

This is a comment.

Could you please give the link for the forums its own heading on the right handside? I've oblivious to it right now and its a little hard to find.

Ohhh, a bandwagon *jumps*

Testing.. Testing.. 1, 2, 3

I registered with wordpress however I have yet to get the email with my password. Same with password retrieval, no email :(

KN I'm totally with you here! Less JT more forumz!

The new site design looks great, Dennis!

The forum will rise again!

Testing....

/me Shouts HEELLLOOOOO????

Andrew EisenAnd I'm off too. Play nice, y'all!08/01/2015 - 11:33am
Andrew EisenIn short, discussions of ethics in journalism? Totally fine. Said indie dev's sex life? Not okay.08/01/2015 - 11:31am
james_fudgeTry talking when you have hundreds of people tweeting at you at the same time :)08/01/2015 - 11:30am
Andrew EisenAnd yet, when 30-seconds of research showed that there was no relevance to said indie dev's sex life, many people kept talking about. Hell, still do to this day. I had a guy on Twitter pester me about this nonsense for an entire day last weekend.08/01/2015 - 11:30am
james_fudgeWhatever dude, you're here posting. No one's stopping you.08/01/2015 - 11:30am
Goth_SkunkBe advised: In approximately 30 minutes I'm heading out of town for an obligatory family reunion. This is being stated so that none can interpret my upcoming 24 hour hiatus as a tail-tucking turn from discussion.08/01/2015 - 11:28am
Goth_SkunkEven now, IronPatriot, MechaCrash, and Craig R. continue to attempt to shout me down and dehumanize me.08/01/2015 - 11:25am
Goth_SkunkWhat transpired afterwards was a concerted effort to shout down and dehumanize those trying to bring these matters out into the open. I remain utterly convinced of this to this day.08/01/2015 - 11:24am
Goth_SkunkAnd yet the sex life of this indie developer tied right into the matter of journalistic ethics, as investigations uncovered a great number of breaches of ethical conduct, both related & not. That scandal is the orifice from which the balloon is inflated.08/01/2015 - 11:20am
MechaCrashI am reminded of the saying about playing chess with a pigeon.08/01/2015 - 11:13am
Andrew EisenThis is supported by, well, what actually happened, but also the text of the actual leaks. That was Tito's question and what he and a few (four total, I think) were discussing.08/01/2015 - 11:11am
Andrew EisenNo, it's not. What was generally prohibited was not discussion of journalistic ethics or other GamerGate topics, but threads that were, for example, discussing the sex life of an indie developer. THOSE are what were locked and removed.08/01/2015 - 11:10am
Goth_SkunkI don't believe you. Not for a second. Every major site with the exception of the Escapist prohibited discussion of GamerGate in its early stages. That is a fact.08/01/2015 - 11:04am
Andrew EisenNo, that's a fact. Don't believe me, read 'em yourself. No one was trying to censor discussion of GamerGate.08/01/2015 - 11:02am
Goth_Skunk@Andrew: That's your opinion.08/01/2015 - 10:57am
Goth_Skunkfuture? I'd compensate you for your time, of course.08/01/2015 - 10:57am
