American Islamic Group Calls on Wal-Mart to Drop Left Behind Game

December 20, 2006 -
There's more bad news for Left Behind: Eternal Forces as a leading U.S. Islamic organization calls on mega-retailer Wal-Mart to stop carrying the game.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) issued a press release yesterday, saying the game "glorifies religious violence and may harm interfaith relations."

Left Behind: Eternal Forces depicts religious-themed combat set in the post-Rapture world of the best-selling Left Behind book series.

CAIR executive director Nihad Awad wrote to Wal-Mart CEO H. Lee Scott Jr., saying:
We believe the message this game is promoting is one of religious intolerance. The game's enemy team includes people with Muslim-sounding names. When asked about the Arab and Muslim-sounding names, Left Behind Games' President Jeffrey Frichner said, 'Muslims are not believers in Jesus Christ' - - and therefore cannot be on the side of Jesus in the game. (San Francisco Chronicle, 12/12/06) As you may know, Muslims do in fact revere Jesus as one of God's prophets.

Awad added:
We have no desire to stifle creativity or inhibit freedom of speech. However, it is our duty as America's leading Islamic civil rights group to promote mutual understanding and ensure the safety of Americans of all faiths.

If this were based on a non-Christian faith and carried a convert-or-die message, Walmart wouldn't carry it. Even many Christian faiths are upset (see earlier story on GP) because of it's simplistic and somewhat non-Christian violent approach.

If you view this as a request (which it is), it is not unreasonable.

Anyone else hoping the Rapture DOES come and whisk people away, just so we can stop talking about this lame game?

The game "Left Behind", in my own opinion, is the worst game ever made, christians killing non-believers? That's horrible.

I think the phrase, "Love thy neighbour" has been forgotten?

To X4J,

You are wrong there my good and faithful sir, Islam teaches tolerance and love. Jihad means struggle, giving up smoking and controlling one's temper is also called Jihad. But it's a sad thing that Al-Qaeda, Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden used their belief to justify their killings!!! These acts of terrorisms and using Allah's name to justify their killings must be stopped.

War breeds hate, racism and discrimination, and together we must break these cycle.

Since when is David Cross in an Islamic group?

So, by promoting inter faith unity, you have to promote censorship? Great.

If it weren't for all the contraversy, the game wouldn't have sold any copies whatsoever. Left Behind games thanks everyone for the publicity.

I wonder if they say the same stuff about the books the games are based on.

I'm glad that Wal-Mart isn't selling anything else that might send the same message as that game -- you know, like the books that the game is based on...

It is hard to beleive that people can be this quick to jump on the "games are evil!" bandwagon that they don't stop to think that there's nothing in this game that isn't in the books.

Call me crazy but if they were really worried about persecution of non-Christians they might want to, oh I don't know, look at the source material instead fo one of the spinoffs.

But no, videogames are teh evil!!!!!

"We believe the message this game is promoting is one of religious intolerance..." A quote from CAIR.

Do they mean like when muslims (in real life) fly planes into buildings and murder thousands of innocent people because they are not muslim?

If you read the literature, Islam and Christianity do not have any common ground because Islam preaches that Jesus was a prophet and not the son of God. Huge difference.

Jump forward to today's world where 95-99% of all terrorist acts are perpetrated by Muslims against non-Muslims. 95-99% of all sectarian violence (not considered terrorism by the international community) is perpetrated by Muslim populations against non-Muslim populations. Our western media is just too craven to point this out to people. And why would they report it if they were going to be bombed or beheaded by a crowd of screaming lunatics.

Now, we have the terrorist leadership of the hate-group CAIR telling people in this country how they can game. Total jive.

This shows how intolerant the muslims at CAIR really are. I hope people will learn that their complaints have no credibility and are in fact thinly vieled (pun intended) attacks on every other reigion.

When I lived and worked in Muslim countries, we worshipped in the basements with the wondows closed, because followers of the Religion of Peace and Tolerance would have imprisoned us if they knew what we were doing.

I can name country after country around the Mediteranean Sea that was once Christian, but was overrun by Arab Muslims and forced to convert to the religion of Peace and Tolerance. Mosques were built on top of the holiest places of Judaism and Christianity. Muslims conquered all of Spain, almost capture Paris and Turkey, overran the center of Eastern Christianity in Constantinople (now called Istanbul), and tried to conquer Italy. They are once again attempting to spread their faith bt coersion, arms, and intimidation.

Only those ignorant of history and the world today will say that jihad is a peaceful inner struggle.

Let's not forget that the word peace in "Islam is a religion of peace" means submission.

I like how CAIR doesn't want to suppress the freedom of speech, yet they would like to have Muslim law rule this nation. I believe there might be some conflict there.

Do I hear the voice of the serpent? "...you won't surely die...". Come on! It's the same old tactic our enemy has used since the garden. Christian faith and the Word of God speak clearly that only those people who "believe in their heart and confess with their mouth that Jesus is Lord shall be saved.' It's only about religious intolerence if you don't agree with the Word. Sure God is Love. We should all love our neighbor as our self, but lets face it; if people find themselves opposing the Christian Faith then this video shows were those people stand. God calls every human being to repent and return to Him through His son, Jesus, but not everyone will.

It's completely apparent that Islam with it's lawyers at CAIR are the greatest threat to the United States and the western world today by far. Although throwbacks to the 10th century, they have mustered the support of liberals and are masters at manipulating our own society and systems to push their barbaric way of life.

Just as they ingeniously filtered through the system to hijack airliners in 2001, they use the ignorant liberals to push their cause in the media and use CAIR to expertly manipulate the legal system.

I predict Islam will take over Europe within the next 5 years through their own democratic process, and begin to reverse 500 years of progress reverting to Sharia law.

We're moving that way here in the US quickly as these Islamists are experts at crying discrimination and deviously manipulating our systems against us as well.

Was/is free speech for the Christians who wrote the software violated? That's obviously being stomped on equally by the Islamofascists and the PC liberals. What I'm more concerned about is the destruction of western society as we know it. It's coming very quickly. Convert or die.

We should halt Islamic immigration to Western countries. All dealings with Muslims must be on a reciprocity basis. If they allow Christian missionaries in their countries, maybe we will consider allowing Muslim Imams and mosques in our countries. If they, the Saudis and the Iranians for starters, can guarantee that a Baptist in Baghdad has the same rights and priviledges and most importantly....survival rate as a Sunni in Shreveport, or a Shia in St. Louis, maybe we can consider allowing them to send Imams to the West.

Folks, it's a free country. If these rapture idiots wnat to release a video game, knock yourselves out. Have fun. If Islamic groups are offended and want to write a letter of protest to Wal-Mart, again, it's a free country, enjoy your protest.

What if the game depicted KKK against run away slaves? Would that be acceptable as freedom of speech? Come on people, wake up smell your own stank! Do you really feel and believe the way you really do in your posts? If so, then keep your intolerance and ignorance to yourself and stop trying to preach hatred......anything such as this video game (the book too) that preaches and teaches people how to be intolerant and short sighted should not be allowed. I don't want to hear you wine about censorship and all that other bull crap! You people should know what right and what's wrong....if you think "church = right", "mosque = wrong", then you need to start looking for a new church or a pastor, because what you are learning is not "God's" work. God in all forms and in all religions is about love, understanding, truth, justice, etc. All the good things that wrong people take a hold of and distort it to fit "their" beliefs not God's teachings.

[...] As pointed out by GamePolitics.com, it isn’t just Christian groups that are displeased with the game. Earlier this week, The Council on American-Islamic Relations asked Wal-Mart to stop carrying the game, saying that it promotes religious violence and “may harm interfaith relations.” [...]

David Ko:

Disagreeing with an ideology, whether it is political or religious, does not constitute intolerance. I disagree with the ideology of the KKK AND I disagree with the dominant interpretation of Islam. To me, both are branches of the same evil. Islam is imperialist, and it is totalitarian. I do not believe that the dominant interpretation of Islam is compatible with western democracy. I would be happy to be proven wrong, but 1400 years of history suggests that we can expect long term conflict with this ideology, unless of course, we all decide to convert.

And I do not need to be told that I am Islamophobic. As I wrote earlier, I have lived and worked in Muslim countries since 1995. I have read the Quran and the commentaries on the life of Mohammed. I do not want to be like Mohammed and I do not want to follow his ideology because I believe that it is not an ideology that can make the world better. I have many good friends who are cultural Muslims, which is to say that they are not “good” Muslims in the Quranic sense. The sad part is that they have no choice about what religion they practice if they want to continue to live in their homelands. If they convert, they die. Intolerance doesn’t get any worse than killing someone for believing what they choose to believe, and to cheapen the word intolerance by using it to describe a silly computer game only deadens people to the real intolerance in the world.

Patience

BTW, are you aware that the United States was forced to pay tribute to Muslim countries in North Africa for several years just after the American Revolution so they would stop attacking our ships and enslaving our people? It seems that Thomas Jefferson wanted to know what he was up against with these followers of Mohammed, so he obtained a copy of the Quran to study - the same Quran that Steve Ellison used when he was sworn in last week as the first Muslim member of Congress. Deeply ironic, if you think about, and deeply troubling, since this war of aggression by Muslims never seems to go away.

Wal-Mart should ban the Koran and anything Islamic due to the religious intolerance and violence of that faith.

So the muslims wants the game left behind taken off the shelfs, just because it hurt their feelings? Well there is a soluation to that, its called you don't have to buy it. In this country we have freedom of speech, you cant go take a game off the self because a group of people is offended by it.

What if every one started doing that, because other games might offend them, what will be next? I say Walmart should not give in to these people stand your ground. LONG LIVE FREEDOM!!!

AvalongodAgain I think we're conflating the issue of whether Sarkeesian's claims are beyond critique (no they're not) and whether its ever appropriate to use sexist language, let alone physical threats on a woman to intimidate her (no it isn't)08/29/2014 - 5:04pm
prh99Trolling her or trying to assail her integrity just draws more attention (Streisand effect?). Which is really not what the trolls want, so the only way to win (if there is a win to be had) is not to play/troll.08/29/2014 - 5:02pm
prh99Who cares, just don't watch the damn videos if you don't like her. Personally, I don't care as far as she is concerned as long there are interesting games to be played.08/29/2014 - 4:34pm
Andrew EisenZip - And yet, you can't cite a single, solitary example. (And no one said you hated anyone. Along those lines, no one claimed Sarkeesian was perfect either.)08/29/2014 - 3:51pm

Andrew EisenSleaker - I'd say that's likely. From my experience, most who have a problem with Sarkeesian's videos either want to hate them in the first place (for whatever reason) or honestly misunderstand what they're about and what they're saying.08/29/2014 - 3:16pm
james_fudgeWe appreciate your support :)08/29/2014 - 2:55pm
TechnogeekIt gives me hope that maybe, just maybe, the gaming community is not statistically indistinguishable from consisting entirely of people that your average Xbox Live caricature would look at and go "maybe you should tone it down a little bit".08/29/2014 - 2:49pm
TechnogeekI just want to say that while I've disagreed with the staff of this site on several occasions, it's still good to see that they're not automatically dismissing Anita's videos as a "misandrist scam" or whatever the preferred dismissive term is these days.08/29/2014 - 2:49pm

SleakerAnd honestly, nearly all of the games she references, or images she depicts I've always cringed at and wondered why they were included in games to begin with, from pinups through explicit sexual depictions or direct abuse. I think it's cheap storytelling.08/29/2014 - 12:35pm
Sleaker@AE - aren't most people fundamentally misunderstanding her at this point? haha.. On a related note I think a lot of the backlash is coming from males that think she is telling them their 'Generic Male Fantasy' is bad and wrong.08/29/2014 - 12:33pm
Andrew EisenAnd no, I don't think the female community would be upset over the performance of a case study in and of itself. Possibly the mostivations behind such a study, the methodology or conclusions but not the mere idea of a case study.08/29/2014 - 12:29pm
