It's an awful, tragic story, as reported by the
New Zealand Herald:
Three teenage boys died when the car they were in crashed while fleeing from the police in Auckland on Christmas Eve.
According to the Herald's account, government transportation spokesman Maurice Williamson, speaking about the wreck, said today's adolescents think they are "bulletproof." Williamson also blamed PlayStations and Xboxes for encouraging reckless driving without consideration of the consequences.
GP: Frankly, Mr. Williamson's rush to blame this tragedy on video games is baffling. Was there ever a time when teenagers
didn't think they were indestructible? As far as car accidents go, did you ever try to buy auto insurance for a 16-year-old boy? There is a reason why those rates have been sky-high since long before anyone ever heard of Xbox or PlayStation. Statistically, young males have always had more wrecks than any other subset of drivers.
The
NZ City News reports that the young men were drinking. New Zealand's TV3 has a
video report. We should mention that we came upon this story by way of
Kotaku...

these kids these days, they place the racing games where you drive as fast as you can. That might have something to do with it.
Of course, this does not justify him, but it does alleviate him from the position that all games are evil. I just think that he doesn't know enough to know otherwise and just assumes that all kids play games. I definitely don't think he specifically hates games, just that they aren't to his particular taste but it's ok for the kids to play.
BTW, It's my 16th birthday!:)

To politicians, if you are going to start to pick on video games, why not pick on automobiles instead?
I remember hearing on a T.V. show, called "American Justice," that there was a court case in the 90's where a defense attorney used professional wrestling as a scapegoat for his client and it didn't work. He then had to issue an apology to the wrestling league. People, who have used video games as scapegoats, should have to issue an apology to the video game industry. Why is professional wrestling absolved while video games are attacked endlessly? The main points here are that people have to take responsibility for their own actions and images on a screen are NOT AT ALL HARMFUL IN ANY WAY. THEY DON'T INFLUENCE PEOPLE. STOP ATTACKING VIDEO GAMES.
And he's got an email where you can contact him. Not that he has been Minister of Science & Technology, Communication and Information Technology before being spokesman for Transport. He seems to know about computers too.
Also, I'd like to warn you all : the New Zealand Herald may have badly reported what Mr. Williamson said. After all, there's no quote in the whole article. It's just the author who said "Maurice Williamson says", so they may have misinterpreted what he REALLY said.
So, for those who want to contact Mr. Williamson, the first thing to ask could be : did he REALLY blame PS2 and Xbox like NZ Herald said he did ?
Just to let you know, it's spelled "croquet". I know, it's a word you don't normally spell. I get it wrong sometimes myself.
Anyways, I fail to see how this spokesman can draw that racing games are to blame for this incident because they don't teach you of the consequences. This guy has obviously never played Road Rash where whenever you commit an act of violence or speed on the roads while trying to outrace your opponents then cops come and try to arrest you nor has he tried out one of the more recent NFS games. Just plain ignorant and clear anti-game bias.

One quick check of Wikipedia on legal drinking ages in each country:
While minors can drink at any age, they can only legally be supplied alcohol by their legal guardian or spouse. On 8 November 2006 the New Zealand Parliament rejected a bill to return the legal age to 20.
Looks to me like some motard owes the industry an apology.
I tend to agree with Dennis. "When didn’t teenagers think they were indestructible?" kids do tend to get into all kinds of accidents becuase they think they are indestructible. I'm not talking car wrecks here either. I'm talking about the minor accidents (compared to the car wreck) the injuries kids get while growing up. Falling off bikes. off skateboards. I had my own share of injuries. jumping from the back of a parked pickup didnt have one of my feet high enough to clear the side. So I ended up tripping falling off and hurting myself.
A friend (cousin? I can't remember. I know I cant be spelling her name right)Story were playing krokay (can't spell it. pronounce it how I have spelled.) She hits the ball like she was playing golf. It hit me in the mouth. I thought my front teeth fell out. They had not. My mouth hurt for quite a while.
Can't blame any of those injuries on..say playing Super Mario Bros.
Also There was more violence in kids and teens during the NES and SNES's time than the PS2 or XBOX's

Also Dennis, if this posts Then either re-whitelisting worked or logging to wordPress worked. I cant tell since I logged in first.
I wish somebody would say that to the dumb ass politician who is exploiting this event for his own private agenda against computer games.
Also he blamed Playstations and Xbobxs, why not the Wii??
sorry about the rant, anyway, stupid people dont they understand kids do stupid shit? always have and allways will. with or without videogames.
Dumbass politicians. Doesn't suprise me Williamson is blaming games - he's too goddamn stupid to go for the easy explanaition: drunk teenagers do stupid stuff.
Drunks do stupid things.
Drunk teens do very stupid things.
So how do games figure into the actions of drunk teens?
Idiots are idiots. Three less stupid people in the wide world - video games aside.
Rest in Peace, dumbasses.
