Edwards Campaign Opens Second Life Office

Edwards Campaign Opens Second Life Office

February 17, 2007
While not the first political hopeful to make an appearance in the MMO Second Life, presidential candidate John Edwards is the first to get a virtual campaign office.

Jerimee Richir, who goes by the SL handle Jose Rote, volunteered to purchase virtual land in Second Life, set up, and run the office as a grassroots effort. Rote has stayed in touch with Edwards' campaign team, and claims their full support:
It is unofficial in that the campaign is not spending money, and I am not paid, however the campaign is aware that we are organizing in Second Life, and cooperating as much as they can.

ZDnet's Steve O'Hear asked whether a campaign in SL would have as much impact as a campaign on a social site with a much larger population-base, such as MySpace or FaceBook.

Rote notes that while SL numbers are smaller, many SL'ers have their own blogs as well, so the campaign gets spread in many different directions. SL'ers facination with user generated content also contributes to the buzz, with Edwards' slogans popping up on all sorts of in-game objects such as clothing, posters, and mail boxes.

Redaktisto Noble, an editor at Second Life News Network, says that getting the word out is as imporant as actually wooing voters:
I think that with the campaign season starting so early, it's more important to win volunteers and supporters than votes at this point. An SL presence encourages that as well as any other initiative I can think of.

CM: While a virtual office is great for getting the word out, it's also a lot harder to provide security. Real campaign offices can be picketed, but there's no danger of being swarmed by hundreds of flying phalli...

@ Kincyr

Not to mention her run-ins with the temporary Banhammer of SL when she abused a flaw in the tier system, when she kicked a whole ton of people out of their paid rentage-fields, and of course The Forest Guides thing...

Embarrasing, which is why I can understand the edit-wars at Wiki. Can't have the truth stick out in front of our egoes, now can we?! ;)
While the number of people in SL are small, the step does show a possible eagerness to appeal to the younger and/or more technophilic demographics. I'm somewhat of the opinion that the 18-25 group has become more and more politically active in the last few years and is by and large disgusted with the 'politics as usual' that dominate the current government landscape. I think eventually - quite possibly the 2008 presidental election - they will finally get tired of all the bullshit that happens in politics today and prove to be a crucial swing vote bloc for whoever manages to appeal to them. Perhaps it's overly optimistic, but don't we deserve to be able to be optimistic about our leaders? Hell, at this point I'd likely vote for him simply because he's attempting to understand and get in touch with the more techno-savvy crowd. What he's done is a small gesture, to be sure, but it's more interest in gamers than anyone else has shown lately.
(That, and I can't say I like the other front-runners. Hillary seems like just another bland politician who doesn't care about anything except improving her own job, and Obama seems like an okay guy but I have yet to be convinced that he has the chops for the oval office.)
Even if the penis-attack didn't happen before, it probably wouldn't happen to Edwards, seeing as the perp probably knew about Anshe Chung's kinky past. Click my username for the link. Sorry to go off-topic.
@Stetsonblad

There should be enough to make a difference. I haven't checked the numbers as of late, but alot more play it than you are likely assuming.

@-Jes-

The person who says that loses my vote. They'll say it like they would about gamers, assuming the amount is small enough to not make a difference while not really knowing how small that culture is.
@ Davian

True, if the more homophobic politicians hear anything about there being furries in SL, they'd go ballistic on Edwards about it.

"Do you want me, Mr. Perfecty, or Edwards who cares about those vile, grotesque furries who live in virtual worlds?"
Does enough people play (or whatever it is you do on SL) the game (or whatever it is) to make this matter? Seems more like a waste of time. Perhaps Obama can counter Edwards step into the world of games by making a guild supporting him in WoW!
Huh. Edwards must read GP :) He beat Clinton and Obama to it
@Davian

I happen to be a member of that community, and you're right. for SL, more damage can be done with research than a lack of it.
Kurisu, it could be even worse than that for Edwards, if a bit of research is done about SL and the words "Virtual ageplay" and "Furries" become parts of the political vocabulary.
"CM: While a virtual office is great for getting the word out, it’s also a lot harder to provide security. Real campaign offices can be picketed, but there’s no danger of being swarmed by hundreds of flying phalli…"

Curses! You beat me to it! Don't forget about that assualt on Front National's SL headquarters. Once anti-Edwards activists hear of this, I could see the same thing happening.
I could imagine the opponents using this as leverage against him unfortunately. "Do you want a hard working president, or one who spends his time playing kid's games on the internet?"

sad part is I can totally imagien it happening, but, I hope it doesn't.
@Steve

Oops! Added the link to the story as well as a trackback. Thx for the gentle reminder!

While the possibility for said flying objects IS there, I doubt the chance of it happening at this office is anywhere near that of Anshe's incident.
I wonder if the campaign will do a better job vetting the staff to man the SL office than they did when they tried to hire bloggers. So far, the Edwards Campaign's efforts to use internet-based tools to get their message out have been less than impressive.

JDKJ: Which could be explained by both (a) and (b).
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:56am
Austin_Lewis: JDKJ: You forgot C) the fact that, for some reason, every time he did something that would suggest he shouldn't be in the military, let alone an officer, higher ups ignored it or let it slide.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:51am
JDKJ: Part of the problem is, I believe, that (a) the Army had a lot of time and money already invested in him and which they were unwilling to simply write-off and (b) an increasing need for the type of skills and services he provided.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:48am
JDKJ: And that even if he was begging not to get cut loose, he was apparently a real good candidate for being cut loose, anyway.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:11am
JDKJ: @chada: And while Kennedy once noted that there's usually more than enough blame for everyone to get a slice, the possibility that the Army was unwilling to cut loose someone who was asking to get cut loose could be a factor.

chadachada321: Whoops, was out of the convo for awhile. I do wonder what type of ammo he used etc, but the real issue is WHY he did it, not HOW
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:56am
JDKJ: But if it turns out that they actually did, they'll have Hell to pay.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:45am
JDKJ: And I'd tend to rule out the possibilty of FN Herstal supplying restricted ammunition to someone merely because they're ordering it from a military base.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:37am
JDKJ: I know you don't leave your gated community and get around much in dark alleys, so you may be surprised to learn that there's this thing called "the black market" where, if you've got enough money, ain't too much of anything which can't be bought.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:36am
Austin_Lewis: Or, maybe he or someone else at the base ordered the SS190 from FN Herstal.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:32am
Austin_Lewis: the hands of private owners. They run about 300 dollars minimum for a box of 50, and boxes of AP 5.7 are extremely scarce, mainly residing in the hands of Class III stores or individuals who for one reason or another got a demo box of it.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:30am
Austin_Lewis: There are other firearms that fire the 5.7. However, I too would like to know where he got the ammo and what kind was used. Maybe Hasan, planning not to live through this, went out and bought one the boxes of SS190 that are floating around in
Posted 11/07/09 at 08:44am
JDKJ: And it isn't yet clear what type of ammunition Hasan used. It's strange that he purchased a gun but didn't purchase ammunition for it at the same place and time. Especially because the calibre required is peculiar to the actual gun.
