Police: Mall Shooter Did Not Own Game Console or PC

Police: Mall Shooter Did Not Own Game Console or PC

February 18, 2007
There will always be those who are quick to blame video games for any high-profile act of youthful violence.

However, there appears to be no linkage at all between violent games and 18-year-old Sulejman Talovic's murderous rampage at a Salt Lake City mall last week. As reported by the Deseret News, Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank ruled out video games:
As for a motive for the killings, Burbank told the Deseret Morning News after the press conference that his investigators were still looking for one...

Although nothing will be completely ruled out in the search for a motive, some of the possibilities that have been rumored on Internet blog sites so far seem to have no merit, Burbank said.

For instance, detectives as of Friday had found no evidence that violent video games may have influenced Talovic. In fact, Talovic did not even own a computer or a video-game system, Burbank said.

GP: We previously reported that police removed no games or PC's during a search of Talovic's residence. Chief Burbank's comments are the first confirmation that the killer did not even own any game systems.

In addition to the new info about the games, the Deseret News report contains an excellent description of the professionalism and bravery under fire of the Salt Lake City and Ogden police officers who responded to the mall shooting incident.

No, don't ban violent games. Because teenagers are all hateful and self-centred (no joke, see Columbine and past shootings yourself if you don't believe me.)

We shall continue to weep on for teens like this, and they deserved to be executed by hanging for doing these crimes and besides, these people makes me feel ashamed to be a group of youths.
ban trenchcoats!
Oh please, don't you know. Take2 has cleaner crews they send out whenever an incident happens. They bribe the police, take all evidence linking an incident to them.

Gosh. You are all so naive.

Man the tinfoil in my hat itches.
"Second, and my personal favorite part, now we get to watch as Jack’s argument is blown clear out of the water again. Jack, little tip: stop opening your mouth. It just makes you look stupider when the truth is laid bare."

"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth a remove all doubt."

Luckily for us Jack can't keep his mouth shut.
I bet Jack Thompson jumped on this case like all the other ones, and in this case I believe an "Oh SNAAAP!!" is in order.
He probably went to a friends house and trained on their copy of Grand Theft Auto.
Wow, I find it almost unbelieveable that an 18 year old didn't own any video games or a computer. Weird.
First off, kudos to the police. If I had a top-hat, I'd tip it to you. The fact that you all put your life on the line to help people you have probably never seen is truly inspiring.

Second, and my personal favorite part, now we get to watch as Jack's argument is blown clear out of the water again. Jack, little tip: stop opening your mouth. It just makes you look stupider when the truth is laid bare.
@Kajex

"Or did they need the manual to tell them that you have to approach form behind and press ‘b’?"

you bring up my favorite point to put in peoples face when they say that games are simulators, like when my crazy aunt said "Need for Speed is a simulator teaching me to flee the police in a car", even though when i look for the x button in my car its never there.

also i'd like to say i think jack needs a new soapbox for this case, his old one broke.
At least news on jacky will give a few moments of the spam that is the anna nichole crap. I was sick and tired of hearing of her when the fight of the baby began..
Jack Thompson wrong yet again. What else is new? This is just another case of JT making up nonsense hoping that the shooter was a gamer. Just like when he claimed the Washington DC sniper might be a gamer who "trained on Halo" riding a bike and shooting people from scene to scene. Wrong. Or just like he claimed that Bully is a "Columbine Simulator". Wrong. Or just like he claimed his Louisiana bill was bullet proof and constitutional. Wrong. Or that Midway Games embedded his image in the newest Mortal Kombat game. Wrong (it was user created). Or like how he claimed The Sims had nudity in there that was embedded by the developer. Wrong. The list goes on and on and on...

Now if we can only find out the idiot in the Utah Legistature that proclaimed the Mall shooter trained on GTA as fact, even though it was a bogus claim. Any idea who it was, Dennis?
Jack Thompson makes an idiot of himself again but should we really be surprised, can't wait till he gets disbarred.
@Zerodash

I agree, I don't understand how these type of things can be allowed for any lawyer to do. Perhaps thats what they meant by unprofessional conduct, but they were speaking about during a case. I guess if the lawyer isn't in a case at the time and sending emails that have nothing to do with the case, they could say any nonsense they want. Even if they have no proof, have never been there, don't know the attacker and are bat sh*% insane.
GP,
Going back to the Rebecca Walsh story, did you ever find out what she was referring to when she mentioned the comment about the case being mentioned on "Capitol Hill"?

Ya know, John Bruce really has bad luck with people with the last name Walsh. I mean, there was DA Paul Walsh, Jr. in the Robida case who wouldn't give him the time of day. And Dr. Walsh snubs John Bruce regarding John Bruce's comments about NIMF. Now Rebecca Walsh, while still referring to his email, pretty much blows him, and other agenda seekers, out of the water with a very well written piece.

It's good that the investigation is equally looking at ALL possibilities, including rumors, and not just giving in to the tragedy abusers and agenda seekers. That's what real investigators do, look at all possibilities.

That's one thing I don't get. He states over and over that the games must have been ditched, yet when you step back, you wonder why on earth someone would WANT to ditch them. Are they evidence? Are they relevant to the interests and connections to the crime they just committed? Could they not have just left them home on the presumption that they were going to come back? And why on earth would they HAVE the games on hand to begin with? Did they play in the cars they used to get to their locations? Or did they need the manual to tell them that you have to approach form behind and press 'b'?
Thompson will nevertheless spin video games into this. Crusty politicians on the other side of the technological gap would be none the wiser. The only way to discredit and destroy Jack Thompson is to get him disbarred. Until then, ignorant news programs, politicians, and talk shows will continue to treat him as some kind of "expert" in the field, when he is really nothing more than a petty ambulance chaser.
Now Jack will have to do something he's not accustomed to.............be reasonable and logical.
Does the Florida Bar care about this type of stuff? Sending out these types of press releases spreading BLATANT LIES doesn't seem fit for a "professional" lawyer.
I'm very happy this turned out to be the case. For once we're not going to get the blame for someone pulling a stunt like this.
"Maybe the fact that he didn’t own a computer/video game system is the reason he went on a killing spree."

I agree and disagree. I don't think him not having that stuff was a sole factor, however I think it would have been a good outlet for all this negative energy/
Is this what the video game industry has to deal with anytime a tragedy of this manner occurs? Wait for the police to prove that Thompson is simply senile? I can't believe they put up with his harassment after he has been proven wrong, and his accusations do nothing but damage their reputation. I wonder if the industry would be able to sue him for libel and slander considering all the trash talking that he's done.
@ Jabrwock

"I remember the Jacob Robida case, and JT even told the police to search the highway, because clearly he’d ditched his in-car-video-game-self-pleasuring-device as he fled."

If someone really left a PS2 and games on the side of a highway, as Jacky Boy tried to claim in the Robida case, 99% of the time, it wouldn't be there long before someone else claimed it for themselves.

But back on-topic, the Salt Lake City PD made Jacky Boy look like the fool he truly is.
It's sad when the media makes mention of something like that as if it an unsual occurance and that we should be surprised that a person can actually be a crazy killer without having played any sort of video games.

@Jabrwock

I am sure they will and then it will be like: Guy wore a trench coat just like Columbine, and the guys from Columbline played video games therefore video games caused this tragedy. Ban video games!
I like Shoehorn's idea.
@gs2005

"In fact, Talovic did not even own a computer or a video-game system, Burbank said."
"he’ll make something up that fits his conspiracy theory if he wants to concerning this"

I remember the Jacob Robida case, and JT even told the police to search the highway, because clearly he'd ditched his in-car-video-game-self-pleasuring-device as he fled. Didn't ditch the weapons he was carrying though...
I'll bet the media still tries to make the Columbine link, just because of the trenchcoat...
John Bruce Thompson lies all the time-he'll make something up that fits his conspiracy theory if he wants to concerning this. His prior lack of success across all fronts does not matter to people who are looking for a scapegoat...
Gues what, the majority of people in the world does not own PC's or gameconsoles.

And gues what, the majority of those people live in war torn countries.
So, using the same logic as Jacky boy, but then in reverse: Having no PC, consoles with violent game makes people agressive and homicidal.
Maybe the fact that he didn't own a computer/video game system is the reason he went on a killing spree.
This is great. Maybe now they'll check to see if this guy was suppose to be taking medication that prevented psychotic episodes.
@Falcon

It's not really about Jack, although he was the one who claimed the kid did play video games. This is more in regards to report on a subject that usually has people try to tie video games to. Most people would much rather it not BE about Jack, but this wouldn't be gamepolitics if it weren't covered due to the relevence of games and politics that Jack immerses himself into. And law is still a part of politics, as well, so you can't just ignore the school shootings that supposedly "were caused by this person playing video games."

And indeed, superb job by the SLCPD- they do have their faults, but this is them shining.
Why does anyone bother covering Jack? We've all become so paranoid.
"In addition to the new info about the games, the Deseret News report contains an excellent description of the Salt Lake City P.D.’s professionalism and bravery under fire in responding to the mall shooting incident."

You can say that again. Those police officers are amazing. Kodus to them for stopping what could have been much worse.

The Video Game information is just icing.
Maybe someone should spam a press release to several media outlets, with the subject line: "Rabid unprofessional lawyer's opinion probably wrong".
Cue Jack Thompson saying that the killer either "ditched the evidence", or the police "disregarded the evidence" in 5, 4, 3, 2...
One day a government somewhere will figure out that the cart goes BEHIND the Donkey.
[...] Source et Source [...]
"They’ll just blame it on violent movies and TV if they can’t peg it on video games."

Actually they won't, because people are under the assumption that kids don't have access to violent movies/television because movie theaters check IDs and every TV has a V-Chip. They seem to forget that minors can easily get into R-rated movies at the theater and very few parents use the V-Chip(And than have the audacity to complain about TV content).
Is anyone staying on top of reporting JT's crap/lies to the Florida Bar?
They'll just blame it on violent movies and TV if they can't peg it on video games. And guess what, violent movies are frequently made into video games so there's still a connection! It's a conspiracy!
[...] You may have heard how Salt Lake City teen Sulejman Talovic (he was 18 yrs old) recently went on a muderous rampage through a Mall in Salt Lake ultimately killing 6 before being killed himself. Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank has stated that he and his crew are still looking for a motive. Talovic apparently did not own a PC or any kind of game console, therefore making a “GTA made him do it” explanation impossible. Surely the media would have loved to make the video game connection but in this tragic case, that connection doesn’t exist. Yeah, but his incessant chattering closely resembles that of a rabid drool monkey and gets annoying after a while.

JDKJ: Which could be explained by both (a) and (b).
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:56am
Austin_Lewis: JDKJ: You forgot C) the fact that, for some reason, every time he did something that would suggest he shouldn't be in the military, let alone an officer, higher ups ignored it or let it slide.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:51am
JDKJ: Part of the problem is, I believe, that (a) the Army had a lot of time and money already invested in him and which they were unwilling to simply write-off and (b) an increasing need for the type of skills and services he provided.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:48am
JDKJ: And that even if he was begging not to get cut loose, he was apparently a real good candidate for being cut loose, anyway.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:11am
JDKJ: @chada: And while Kennedy once noted that there's usually more than enough blame for everyone to get a slice, the possibility that the Army was unwilling to cut loose someone who was asking to get cut loose could be a factor.

chadachada321: Whoops, was out of the convo for awhile. I do wonder what type of ammo he used etc, but the real issue is WHY he did it, not HOW
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:56am
JDKJ: But if it turns out that they actually did, they'll have Hell to pay.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:45am
JDKJ: And I'd tend to rule out the possibilty of FN Herstal supplying restricted ammunition to someone merely because they're ordering it from a military base.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:37am
JDKJ: I know you don't leave your gated community and get around much in dark alleys, so you may be surprised to learn that there's this thing called "the black market" where, if you've got enough money, ain't too much of anything which can't be bought.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:36am
Austin_Lewis: Or, maybe he or someone else at the base ordered the SS190 from FN Herstal.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:32am
Austin_Lewis: the hands of private owners. They run about 300 dollars minimum for a box of 50, and boxes of AP 5.7 are extremely scarce, mainly residing in the hands of Class III stores or individuals who for one reason or another got a demo box of it.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:30am
Austin_Lewis: There are other firearms that fire the 5.7. However, I too would like to know where he got the ammo and what kind was used. Maybe Hasan, planning not to live through this, went out and bought one the boxes of SS190 that are floating around in
Posted 11/07/09 at 08:44am
JDKJ: And it isn't yet clear what type of ammunition Hasan used. It's strange that he purchased a gun but didn't purchase ammunition for it at the same place and time. Especially because the calibre required is peculiar to the actual gun.
