John Edwards Second Life Campaign HQ Vandalized

March 1, 2007 -
According to a post on presidential candidate John Edwards' official blog, the Democrat's Second Life campaign headquarters was trashed, apparently by Republican gamers:
Shortly before midnight (CST) on Monday, February 26, a group of republican Second Life users, some sporting "Bush '08" tags, vandalized the John Edwards Second Life HQ.  They plastered the area with Marxist/Lenninist posters and slogans, a feces spewing obsenity, and a photoshopped picture of John in blackface, all the while harrassing visitors with right-wing nonsense and obsenity-laden abuse of Democrats in general and John in particular.

The author of the blog post, identified only as robinrising, was apparently a witness to the incident and provided screen shots and chat logs to SL publisher Linden Lab for possible disciplinary action.

Uh, isn't this a little ridiculous? Who cares. It's a stupid virtual website world with no real life significance. I can't believe people are actually upset by this, and I'm a democrat.

The key is the two pics they chose. Both of these sound familiar to two images on another site I visit and have a habit of doing this. If it is who I think it is, they didit for kicks and giggles.

I totally disagree that this was a bunch of kids being smart asses.

Smart ass kids know nothing about politics and couldn't tell you the difference between Bush and Edwards. Most think obama is osama.

These are typical, loser-republican adults, who are so powerless in their real life, there only sence of control is in a video game. they lost the election and have no power. LOSERS!

just how stupid are we? it's not GOOD ENOUGH that we fight all our stupid battles in REAL LIFE. we now have to take them to SECOND LIFE. what the fuck is going on here? why is this even a story? people playing on computers and fighting amongst themselves? little kids in a sandbox. a pox on all of them.

"Considering the level of maturity, or lack thereof, involved in this vandalism, odds are this was just some kids being smartasses"

Exactly what I was thinking.

Linden Labs is playing off of all this press now, but will people stop using SL for serious issues (like public relations) over the fear of flying penis attacks? I kind of hope so, Linden Labs are a bunch of media whores, and the media just keeps biting. After all, "Feces Spewing Obscenity Attacks Democratic HQ" is such a better headline than "Police Seek Giggling Bandits" (top headline, CNN U.S. news)

Or, possibly, the democrats HOPED something like this happens so that they get the free publicity as well. No better way to make your competitors look bad than to lure the retards out to do it for you. Really, does this do more damage to Edwards or to the republican party?

Sigh, while it's possible these were not Republics', I seem to notice this type of behavior is quite common by the 30% of people in the US still attaching themselves to Bush Jr. One needs to look no further than Rush, Malkin, Coulter or any other wacko right wing leader & their followers for behavior of just this nature. Makes me ashamed I ever registered as a Republic voter. Thankfully I came to my senses years ago and am now an avowed Independant. With behavior like this going on it's unlikely I'll ever vote for anyone in that party for a long, long time.

Wow, we start talking partisan politics all of a sudden, and people from each side start going for each other's throats. Settle down, people.

Considering the level of maturity, or lack thereof, involved in this vandalism, odds are this was just some kids being smartasses, not a deliberate Republican ambush, or tin-foil-hat-related Liberal conspiracy. Besides, I'm sure it took a whopping, what, 5 minutes to clean up in the game?

Soon they will hire people to Police such incidents as this.

...well this is suppose to immitate life, right? Just have them hire a few tech guys and have them handle gritty situations like this. Give them Adminship and superiority so they can play god.

OK. !st, NH. Now this.

Let's set up some security cameras and bag some wingers.

Oops, Bush 08. Damn, I am getting almost as brain damaged as the Chimp.

Why are people trying to turn us into a monarchy?

@William Hart

Remember when LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and suddenly Southern Democrats changed their affiliation to the Republican Party?

Sorry for embarrassing you in public like this.

@William Hart sez: "Not to mention the Democrats led the Congress in trying to hold on and fight for Segregation."

Learn some history, WIlliam. Those racist Southern Democrats you mentioned who fought against segregation ended up leaving the Democratic Party en masse, and joined the Republicans, where they've been ever since. Ever heard of Strom Thurmond, who ran for President on an anti-segregation platform? He switched parties and became a Republican in 1964, and took the bulk of the racist Democrats with him.

What this roving band of Republican thugs did to Edwards' Second Life headquarters, including the blackface posters, is so typical of the right's racism. These are the some troglodytes who play games like "Hunt the Illegal Alien," and who offer "Whites Only" scholarships. One would hope that the few non-racists who probably exist in the Republican Party denounce this unprovoked attack on John Edwards.

"Bush 80" is Neocon code - it means that Chimpy will declare martial law and become Preznit for Life in 2008.

Homeland, homeland, homeland uber alles. Bush in 08!

"It’s the online community’s way of saying, 'welcome to the neighborhood, we don’t want your poli-corporate garbage here.'"

Then why do it under the facade of Bush '08 supporters? Wouldn't that be hypocritical? "We don't want your poli-corporate garbage here, but we're cool with protesting it while spouting poli-corporate garbage..."
-- If your wiimote goes snicker-snack, check your wrist-strap...

actually jimbob, jeb already said he is not running in '08. furthermore, the bush '08 people are probably just assuming george w. will overlook the part of the constitution limiting his term to 8 years, just like he has overlooked the rest of the constitution (except for that bit about not infringing on the right to bear arms)...

Moral of the story: immature pricks use the internet. This news story is a tautology.

Republicans who do that type of thing remind me of the Nazi brownshirts who stopped all free speech.
They are today's brownshirts and what is so funny is that they think they are anti-communist. lol
They don't know the difference between communism, Russian style, and Socialism Sweadish style or watered down socialism Canadian style. THey also don't know that the Russians corrupted communism and made it into despotic totalitarianism.
And Fascism is the combination of corporations and the state. I guess they think that is good. Well Hitler's Germany and Musolinni's Italy are examples of that type of despotism. They may think that is good until they have it crammed down their throats as the Bush administration is trying very hard to do small piece by piece.
I am sure the people who trashed the site are "good christians," who believe in an angry hate filled Christ.

havent you guys ever heard of Jeb Bush? ya know the one who WILL be running for prez in '08. (saddly)

@Sean Wheeler

You've obviously never been in Second Life before. This isn't a game, it's a community for people to come together and chat, share things, etc. There is no set objective, thus it's not a game and yes, what these people did violates the TOS with SL. They do deserve to be punished because the proper way for them to express themselves is to create their own area and post those things there, not to go around and destroy someone else's creation. It just ruins the whole SL experience for everyone.

The Repubs aren't going to find the WMD or Bin Laden in Edward's virtual campaign HQ (oddly Repubs often STILL mix Bin Laden up with Iraq, thanks to Bush's misinformation campaign).

Maybe they should be focusing their attention on the mess their party put this country (and the rest of the world in). Its time work in concert to get us out of Vietraq and start focusing on building our own nation rather than a third world tribal backwater that prefers to live in the stone age.

Of course, we could continue on this course and mold our own country into an anti-science fundamentalist backwater too. 32 year lifespan anyone?

simple to fix just impeach bush and chaney for lying and breaking all the laws they broke.

This is pretty interesting to say the least, of course, it's also pretty childish and stupid, but it's interesting what direction these kinds of protests can take when given and environment where anything is possible. However, Bush in '08 stickers are stupid, Bush cannot run again because it's unconstitiutional, just like E. Zachary Knight said. Entertaining, but pathetic.

This is less about politics and more about griefing the SL noobs.

It's the online community's way of saying, "welcome to the neighborhood, we don't want your poli-corporate garbage here."

I expect the same sort of thing would happen if Guiliani set up a virtual office.

digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX! digg suXX!

@William Hart

Are you really serious? Granted, what you say isn't impossible (and others' suspicion that this was apolitical attention-seeking seems well within the realm of possibility), but do you REALLY believe that the Republican party doesn't contain a fair percentage of ne'er-do-wells? That seems willfully ignorant. Any large group - political, religious, whatever - will have barnacles.

To the "It's just a game" people: You're right, to an extent. It is a game, but why should vulgar and just plain abusive behavior be seen as equally acceptable as regular gameplay? Other people are trying to enjoy the game, too, especially since the "game" has become much, much more with all the media attention it's been getting. One person's "fun" can ruin another's experience.

Think about it like this: You're playing a board game, and one of your friends watching the game decides to take a dump on the board. Sure, it's not a "big" deal, but it is incredibly rude and abhorrent behavior.

@William Hart

My... that sounds a bit like... propaganda.
And you cannot tell who is what from behind a keyboard, through circiuts, through the internet, and from who knows how far away. Not even if you witnessed it yourself in SL. In the end, those who did it could be democratic, republican, or some bored group of people in Russia, Panama, Burma, etc. Try not to get so defensive when someone says something against your favored side.

Some of the stuff they did might have violated SL's TOS... I'm not sure.

@William Hart

Yes, it's all a democrat conspiracy to make the republicans look bad. They don't need Rush Limbagh's help at all. ;)
-- If your wiimote goes snicker-snack, check your wrist-strap...

That doesn't really mean anything. They could easily be republican, democrat, green, independent, whatever. Hell, this might not even necessarily express their political views. Just because they did something like that in a game does not mean they do not support what they are advocating. On the other hand, they could have just did so for the hell of it.

"possible disciplinary action"

ITS A GAME PEOPLE.... GET OVER IT. I dont like what they did, but thats no reason to cry over it. I thought that was the point of games, because it allows people to act out without actualy having to do it.

Thats why I play on a CSS server that has a strict no porn, and maturity policies.

These weren’t Republicans this was most likely done by Liberal Democrat’s under the intention to make everyone think all Republicans are racist and bigoted. Which is far from the truth since Democrat’s seceded from the Union when a Republican President was elected because of fear they would take away southern Democrat’s god given (They feel the same with abortion go figure) right of slavery. Not to mention the Democrats led the Congress in trying to hold on and fight for Segregation .

I think most people forget the only current member who is still serving in congress to have been an active Klansman Senator Robert Byrd, a Democrat who just was added again in a leadership role in the Senate which makes him 3rd in line for the Presidency.

All Republicans know Bush is not going to be running in 08, this was clearly mockery and Edward’s is taking advantage of it.

You know, if you want to have a political protest, do it the right way. DOing it this way only shows how much of an idiot you are.

Anyway, I don't think this had anything to do with political protesting. To me it seems like launching some sort of juvenile attack on a high profile event or location is guaranteed to give the perp his 15 minutes of fame. Sad really when you think about it.

I'm just waiting for the first one that has clear profit making goal behind it (book deal, promoting something or generating ad revenue).

I think Linden Labs should address the issue before it gets really out of hand.

...feces spewing obsenity, and a photoshopped picture of John in blackface...

I don't think these were republicans...

You know what I think this means? That people are scared Edwards has a chance. If he was a nobody, this wouldn't have happened.

Then again, it may be because he's the ONLY candidate to have an SL presence...

Still, while it was in bad taste, it didn't surprise me. SL protests are... unique... I don't think retaliation is in order though, because that would be sinking to their level of childishness...
-- If your wiimote goes snicker-snack, check your wrist-strap...

I find this as a sad example as to how truly pathetic the bi-partisan split has become

Especially the Bush '08ers...

[...] BREAKING NEWS: The “Second Life” online HQ of the Edwards campaign was vandalised by evil Republican gamers on Monday night. [...]

It's probably not democrats. Just malicious trolls who realise that Republicanism is goingto cause the most offence.

Doh! Edit to above. I meant "It’s probably not Republicans". I'll just disappear now before I make more of a fool of myself.

Really, blackface? I hope these actions anger most Republicans as much as it does the Democrats.

I think it's pretty funny...

Don't get that confused with political standing though. It's just funny that politicians are acting like those annoying Counter Strike players who won't stop posting pictures everywhere on the map.

There's nothing wrong with posting porn in CS.

It makes the game more emotionally enjoyable.

Maybe someone should tell these people that Bush cannot run for president in '08. Its unconstitutional. Additionally, their actions are childish and ignorant. It is people like these that help in the desision to become an independant.

My message to these people "Grow Up."

The folks with the "Bush '08" tags should have their right to vote revoked.

~~All Knowledge is Worth Having~~

I think its awesome that someone did this. Edwards set up his campaign headquarters to reach a wider audience. That audience responded. It's just a game people, relax. I hope that the perpetrators are not punished. They should be lauded for their democratic expression of speech.

Ok, this is uncalled for. Like him or not, this is improper and rude behavior, and I would expect better from the membes of second life. Thats why I don't play in that world. To many jerks running loose.

@J. Miller

"That having been said, it would be nice to see those who condemn this attack set aside their politics long enough to condemn SL attacks against locations containing a conservative viewpoint."

Yes, I wonder what people would say if some leftists plastered a Republican HQ in SL with pictures of say, Hitler. It's hardly a fair comparison for everybody who associates themselves with the party, just as much as it goes for Lenin and Democrats.

Just because we might agree with it doesn't make it okay.

Over 9,000+Bush '08= /k/-tards are responsible. The question here is, are there lulz to be had by retaliating?

Matthew Wilson not surprised.03/27/2015 - 3:51pm
Matthew WilsonI know most of my friends first saw robotech when it was on Toonami in the mid 90s, but it is possible that a fan who watched it in the 80s are in a position to do it.03/27/2015 - 1:04pm
Andrew EisenRobotech was mid 80s. Fans of the show (who were kids when it aired) are my age and older.03/27/2015 - 1:01pm
Matthew Wilsontiming. anime only really became widely known in the US in the mid 90s. if we assume it was mostly kids watching it, they still wouldnt be high enough in managment to be given full creative control yet. it would still be another 5 to 10 years for that.03/27/2015 - 12:59pm
Andrew EisenI agree. Now what makes you think that there is no one in power who cares about (or has the ability to) make a good adaptation?03/27/2015 - 12:47pm
Matthew Wilsonits not about pratice, it is about people who understand it getting in to positions of power.03/27/2015 - 12:34pm
Matthew Wilsonallot of the comic book characters that have been turned in to good movies started in the 70s or earlier.03/27/2015 - 12:32pm
Andrew EisenWell, if it really does take two generations of practice to get it right, we'll never get good live action adaptations of anime if no one starts making them.03/27/2015 - 12:31pm
Andrew EisenWhat have you seen that would make you say that?03/27/2015 - 12:30pm
Matthew WilsonIt took 2 genarations of comic book reader before we got good comic book movies. I imagine that will be the case for anime as well.03/27/2015 - 12:28pm
Matthew Wilson@AE yes if they have people that understand the content give it a shot, but as far as I can tell that does not look like it is happening in this case.03/27/2015 - 12:26pm
Andrew EisenI understand the skepticism but I don't think "this will never work" and "no one should even bother" are very healthy attitudes.03/27/2015 - 12:11pm
Andrew EisenWhy would you doubt that? A lot of writers are my age and older, the perfect age to be fans of the content. All I'm saying is it's not impossible to get a good Robotech movie. In fact, it's more likely today than any other time.03/27/2015 - 12:11pm
Matthew Wilson@AE the difference is in the case of marvel the writers and directors clearly understand the source content. I doubt many of any of them are that way with robotech, or any anime for that matter.03/27/2015 - 11:10am
MaskedPixelante Sony cuts the price of the Vita TV in the UK, still wont force developers to make their stuff compatible with it.03/27/2015 - 10:49am
Andrew EisenMechaCrash - It's true, there are a lot of examples of crap adaptations. But there are increasing numbers of great adaptations such as the Marvel movies. That said, it's certainly going to be an uphill battle at Sony, especially with Tom Rothman around.03/27/2015 - 10:45am
ZippyDSMleeOh live action crap...I dunno with hollywood being stuck in the 90s grimdarkblack mode I can not see how anything would work well other than SNK or Akira.. then again Akira is a bit of head trip...03/27/2015 - 10:11am
MechaCrashI meant Hollywood in general. If they did a Robotech movie, it'd just be a slightly tweaked Macross, because usually when people talk about Robotech, they just mean the first third. Nobody cares about the Masters/Southern Cross or Invid/MOSPAEDA stuff.03/27/2015 - 9:36am
ZippyDSMleeYes Macross is good..... robotech....not so much..... Now Pizza Cats that's the definitive TV dub, if not best dub ever I'd put it up there with COwboy Bebop just becuse the Pizza Cats dub is fun as heck and crazy,Medabots and Fighting Foodons are decent.03/27/2015 - 9:20am
InfophileAged well plot-wise, I mean. The animation is showing its age, but if you don't mind that, the plot holds up quite well03/27/2015 - 6:52am
