BUSTED! Video Poker Machines Diguised as Coin-op Arcade Games

March 25, 2007
The Mountain Press of Sevierville, TN reports that a local diner owner was arrested after police charged that she hid illegal video poker machines inside arcade game cabinets.

According to the Sevier County Sheriff's Department, a remote control switch could change the screen from poker to the video game if police came into the diner. Captain Randy Parton said:
These machines are just like video (game) machines, but they were rigged to switch to a poker machine by remote control. So if someone came in and they didn't want the poker to be seen, they just flipped the switch and the video game appeared. We've recovered other poker machines before, but this is the first time we've ever recovered any like this.

There was, sadly, no word on what type of game cabinets were used to conceal the poker machines. Speedway Diner owner Sharon Tarwater was charged with possession of gambling devices.

@ Cyberskull

Gambling is not considered Biblically evil, simply the excess of it. If you think the GA program is moralistic "pilth" then that might not matter though.

In terms of it only being one machine, I think they're more concerned with preventing the rise of casinos that invite mafia and pimpage. And apparently yes, there is still a mafia, even if it isn't a cool one anymore. Reservations are also apparently mafia infested, I read that somewhere... perhaps.

It's like cp, if you let one man keep an illegal photo in his computer, it invites a gradual erosion of the morally charged legal system that protects the children themselves. Also, as far as I can tell, most laws seem to be based on moralism... and I would at least hesitate before accepting a system claiming to bypass such integral components to human survival.
Nothing really new over here in Asia, for years illegal gambling outlets have been using disguise arcade machine and even UFO doll catcher as a clever way to by-pass the law.

Take for example the famous Pichinko machines, basically they are just soup-up pin ball machines. But earning points in the game will allow you to exchange for gift and coupon, these trinkets can later (open)secretly exchange for cash outside the outlet.
Holy cow, that's only a few miles away from me!

That's so stupid. WHY would you replace quality old-school games with crappy video renditions of poker? It's also VERY illegal here.

Seriously, how dumb can you be?

Ty
While some religions do have rules against gambling, I think it would be misguided to say that they are the primary reason gambling is heavily regulated. Problems arise with... cheating... suspicion of cheating... addictive gambling... Sure, the first is the only thing a free society should regulate, but the promotion of order, so to speak, says to just regulate the problem laden activity.
Okay guys, easy answer to why this is a deal.

There are places where gambling is legal...and there are places where they have a lottery system enacted. Oregon for example, acquires Video Poker and Slot machines...but in order to get these games, Software Engineers have to make the appropriate jurisdictional changes so it is compliant with Oregon. This place had these machines and were making a straight profit from it....no one else. Morality isn't quite the issue in this case...just illegal.
@ZippyDSMlee
Aw, damn! How could've I had forgotten about that?
@CyberSkull

As an excuse, yes, morality is held up as why this stuff is regulated. The behind the scenes reason is it tends to create state-sanctioned monopolies (or at least oligopolies) and these people will not suffer competition from small time operators like that.

As a more general statement, this actually isn't all that impressive as people might think. Tricks like this for gray market gambling are not exactly new and are often simply done in software instead.
Wolf
you forget the holly rollers hate gambling unless its chruch sacationed!
@Kharne
The way I see it; it's video poker. So what. The whole issue is bullshit; it was rigged to an arcade, not like it warps you to a secret casino or something.

@CyberSkull
And that's the problem. Morality does not belong in law and politics. Because it can distort the issues, or the real politician ("Oh, he's against gay marriage, I'll vote for him!" Then he turns out to be an incredible jackass, who is terrible on all his other issues. But you voted for him based on shared morality, and not his politics).
"You have to wonder how fair it is to the punter though. If he’s on a roll, it would be very tempting for the proprietor to flip the switch…"

It may have been simply a sort of AV selector, one of those devices you plug say several game consoles into so you can switch at the flick of a button. They make remote operated ones as well.
I've seen several video poker/slot machines in restaruants where I live.

They don't have a pay out area and have a sticker that says "For Entertainment Use Only"

Weird.
@ Eisen
It's a morality issue. The bible, koran and other religious texts cast gambling as a vice.
@ CyberSkull

If we thought video game legislation was unconstitutional...
@Matthew

Doing that would be suicide. I don't know about you but if that happened to me, i would demand my winnings from the bar and if they refused I would write an anonymous letter to the police telling them about the game machine.

Anyway I wonder if the bar used to be a speakeasy?
There are a number of tabletop video game systems out there that play various puzzle games. The console looks pretty similar to a video poker console, so I'm betting it's one of those. Walk into about any pub and you'll see these things.
All legality aside, this was straight Batman. Seriously, did they have a bust of shakespeare anywhere on the premises?
And who ever said gamers are stupid?
While I'm not into gambling or lawbreaking, I have to salute this guys ingenuity.
I would never have thought of using a boss key in that sort of situation. Some degree of kudos to whoever thought it up.

You have to wonder how fair it is to the punter though. If he's on a roll, it would be very tempting for the proprietor to flip the switch...
@Eisen: Not sure. Honestly, the license system seems to be made to generate tax money.
Why is gambling illegal? I've never understood that.

Andrew Eisen
heres a thought tax it so they don't have to hide it,the goverment has its own lottery for Christ sake and the holy rollers have their boat lottos...
considering this i would never play on one of those.

if there whilling to go to this lenght to hide them there almost certantly riged
This happens because not every single bar/pub/diner owner can afford those evil mastermind turnable walls and such. ;)

Illegal, no doubt, but it does make me chuckle...
You know, this is kind of tricky to respond to.

On one hand, that was illegal and downright sneaky, which I'm not to happy with.

On the other hand, I want to see the machine because legality aside, it's just so damn clever!

Open your eyes, every bar in Illinois has those machines "for entertainment purposes only". If you know the establishment, they will pay out, check behind the bar you will find the magical clicker that resets the machines credits to zero when the gambler goes to the bar for payout. Of course there are more losers than winners, so why not admit gambling is taking place and put a tax on it. These machines are the main income of the smaller bars. Amazing how law enforcement, gaming commissions, and politicians can turn a blind eye when they don't agree with an individual law.
I just wanted say, I think this is a very well done blog.

Thanks.

Re: BUSTED! Video Poker Machines Diguised as Coin-op Arcade

So what big deal the guy has a poker machine does he pay his taxes on his business, is he a drug dealer or pedophile,the government of all these backward states like the one I live in NC that say gambling is illegal,wake up there are a lot worse things,if we were all indians we could have a casino and make money,I have video poker machines that were outlawed in this state yet they allow sweepstake gaming to come in right after outlawing poker machines..go figure..bingo is legal,lottery is legal but in our FREE COUNTRY politcians want to tell us how we can spend our money...Worry about more serious things and leave this guy alone........
