That didn't take long.
Take Two Interactive's new management team, which seized control of the company via stockholder revolt late Thursday afternoon, is facing its first public relations crisis. Not surprisingly, the uproar is related to the controversial
Grand Theft Auto series.
Just hours after new chairman Strauss Zelnick and his team wrestled control of Take Two from embattled former CEO Paul Eibeler, the company released the first video
trailer for GTA IV, scheduled to hit retail on October 16th. The picture at left is a screen shot from the trailer.
While game websites analyzed the trailer frame-by-frame in an obsessive hunt for clues to GTA4's game play, officials in New York City began doing a slow burn over the Big Apple's obvious inclusion as Liberty City, the setting for the crime-oriented game.
As reported by the
NY Daily News:
The latest version of an ultraviolent video game will unleash its murderous mayhem on the streets of New York. And outraged political leaders say the rampant brutality of the game, Grand Theft Auto IV, has little in common with reality.
...(GTA4) is set in a mythical city that bears a striking resemblance to New York... the trailer shows well-known landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Cyclone in Coney Island...
Said City Councilman Peter Vallone, who chairs the Council's Public Safety Committee:
Setting Grand Theft Auto in the safest big city in America would be like setting Halo in Disneyland.
A spokesman for NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg added:
The mayor does not support any video game where you earn points for injuring or killing police officers.
Take Two, of course, had no comment. So even though management has changed, the company's unfortunate duck-and-cover P.R. strategy apparently remains.

Now they'll have to cancel the accompanying documentary.
IT'S A GAME!
How many movies have depicted New York unrealistically, it's fiction, get over it.
First, Las Vegas politico decries Rainbow Six Vegas, then Juarez politico decries Dhost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2, and now this.
At least they understand it's nowhere near reality, but they continue to take this the wrong way. Berg, as you said, IT'S A GAME. Get over it.
I guess it's just another case of video games are still not taken seriously by a lot of people, and this is something each game company should start working on. I mean, the industry's worth billions, surely some positive PR should be in order?
On a side note, did they kick off when Driver Parallel Lines was released, or is it just a case once again of only attacking the most popular titles!
"In previous incarnations, players advanced through the game by killing cops, selling pornography to children and killing prostitutes. Details of the latest version have not been released."
Sorry, but in which mission do you "sell pornography to children" - surely this is liable of the highest order and T2 should do something about it... Oh and of course, you don't 'advance' by killing cops and prostitutes.
1. Gta 3,
2. True crime: streets of new york
3. Fahrenhiet/Indigo prophecy
And tons more.
Where was the outrage when these games depicted new york, in many cases showing it negitivly.
These besides, last time I checked, since they aren't useing any offical names or copy righted material, it's all clear.
So, NYC politicos, STFU and GBTW.
"Safest big city in the country" Who are you kidding?
gang type activity going on, trust me i've been living in Los Angeles
for 2 years.
And by the Way, i liked the Idea of a Disneyland mod for Halo - could someone make that?
Peter Vallone needs to focus on more important things. Like catching the Joker.
I would hardly call Bloomberg conservative bully, or blame him for the GTA4 backlash.
Brokenscope said it best, video games are politician's cultural whipping boy. Both parties are guilty of pet anti-game projects for winning quick campaign fodder.
The Political Spectrum is more like a circle, people too far left or too far right are the same type of person- those beyond the hope of making compromises or questioning there own beliefs.
There is no one answer that fixes everything. A guy once told me that I couldnt support Englands actions in WWII and Martin Luthur King Jr (btw I'm white) because they didn't agree with each other or some BS along those lines. This statement dumbfounded me. If you play a any video game, watch any movie, read virtually any book, ask military generals, or even look at history you will learn that different promblems require different solutions. If a guy pisses you off, you walk away rather than punch him. But if that guy is raping a girl it'd be better to punch him, and then call the police.
Anyone else think it's ironic that we teach children history so "they won't repeat the same mistakes of the past", but virtually all politicians/leaders do just that?
BULLSHIT
Take off your blinders you some of you so conveniently throw up every time a "conservative" does some thing fucking stupid remember that a "liberal" just as far on the other side of the spectrum would do the samething or something just as stupid.
Neither party is a really the industries friend. both parties only give a fuck about votes. Get that through your skull. If there is a cultural whipping boy the only question is which party is hitting it harder.
God sometime you people piss me off.
Nasty.
"WE'RE NOT BIASED, LIBERALS ARE EVIL!"
"I'M NOT BIASED, GAMEPOLITICS IS EVIL!" Or whatever. I dunno what word would be good besides "evil."
"Grand Theft Auto IV, has little in common with reality."
err.. isnt that true for all games?
And halo would rock if set in disneyland :P
Cortana: "...Chief, why did the mouse have to die?"
M.C.: "Sorry. My sniper scope needs cleaning. Thought he was a grunt."
You say we wish Take-Two would vanish?....
There's only one person who really does wish that, and he's not allowed to come here.
I wonder who this UnBiased guy really is?...
Probably higher than most amusement parks.
http://www.snopes.com/disney/parks/deaths.htm
"What is that you say? This game is pissing off politicians in New York? Awesome it must be one hell of a game if they are so fired up about it."
Well good. You don't earn "points" for killing cops, you earn wanted status and the cop's weapons. :3
"ultraviolent" "The mayor does not support any video game where you !!!!!!!!!!earn points for injuring or killing police officers!!!!!!!."
Jack thompson please step up.
People should dig a little deeper before saying things, especially since NYC is safer than all of the major cities in overall crimes. Check it out maybe...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_New_York_City
Seriously? Because if New York equals Disneyland, I'm guessing Detroit equals Cedar Point? And I'll tell you something, I don't think I'd want to walk into downtown Detroit and pay someone to "ride the roller coaster".
What I'm getting at is: this is a ridiculous comparison. Don't politicians have more to worry about (like poverty in New York, crime rate, etc) instead of video games ABOUT New York? Sheesh.
*sigh*I think the terrorists have already won....
I think if Bostan has the right to say that pranks are not allowed because of 9-11 i think that New york is also not allowed to say its the safest city.
Sign me up, I hate Disney, especially after seeing what they did to Huck Finn.
Anyone who's played any of the GTA III series knows it's all bullshit so who cares? People who will never play it can think what they want, they are the people who do these 'things' in real life. The game is based on corrupt mayors like that so it's the best GTA advertisement I've ever seen!
When has take2 or Rockstar ever stood with the ESA?
From now on gamepolitics needs to have a full disclosure section below every take-two report that explains their hatred and bias towards them because this is ridiculous already.
Lucky for us that GTA doesn't have a "point" system...
Look at it this way, how many people per week used to watch South-park. And almost every week Kenny would be decpatiated and/or die in a multitude of Gruesome, and yet comic ways.
Now, I'll admit that GTA IV looks less tongue-in-cheek than Southpark, though Halo in Disneyland might be closer to the mark, GTA 3 was also a lot less 'gory' than most people made it out to be, like 'stomping people until they are a smear on the pavement', which actually means 'Keep kicking the model until the engine stops rendering it and only displays the blood textures on the floor.'. Of course, that doesn't sound nearly as sensationalistic or appealing to the average reader, and doesn't paint the right 'picture'.
'The mayor does not support any video game where you earn points for injuring or killing police officers.' - Well lots of people have pointed out the obvious flaw here, but I should also point out that a statement of mayoral approval is not required in order for such a game to exist, and that the game, if it follows recent GTA tradition will punish you heavily for doing so. I don't doubt that AI has improved dramatically since GTA:VC, and with recent political opinion what it is, I see Rockstar pursuing options not for taking content out of the game, but more based around making sure that reactions are more 'realistic'. That said, if they put all the Policemen in bright purple rabbit-suits, I suppose there would never have been an outcry in the first place.
Anyone else find it ironic that one of the major complaints about GTA 3 onwards was the point at which it different most from 'actual' reality, i.e. The police force's reaction to having one of their own people shot?
This looks like a great game to go wandering in to be honest, I'm not a big fan whatsoever of GTA's gameplay, but I do like games like Oblivion and Gothic 3 where you can just go and look at the scenery for a while :)
I believe I can relate this subject to two rants from comedian star 2 the Ranting Gryphon:
www.ranting-gryphon.com/Rants/2rant-crime.mp3
www.ranting-gryphon.com/Rants/2rant-guns.mp3
Enjoy!
Liberty City started in GTA3, but they didn't care then.
San Andreas hit the Politians faces with "ammo"
LIBERTY CITY STORIES came out.
GTA4 announced
is that not odd to anyone?
..That we know of. With Rockstar who knows what might be hidden on the disc.
Selling Pornography to children in GTA3. You can't do ANYTHING to childen in GTA, because they don't exist. There isn't a child model in the game.
There was a point where you sold drug out of an ice cream truck in Vice City. However, your customers were all adults. No kids in site.
Aside from the libel, this report isn't worth the comment rage its getting.
The Mayor certainly doesn't have to support it. That's frankly one of the most innocuous statements a poltician can make. George H.W. Bush didn't "support" broccoli in the white house, and that didn't effect anyone but his house guests. If the mayor is outraged enough to spend enough time to make public and specific statements, then, we the gaming community should be atleast this outraged. A relayed spoke's person statement published on the weekend is as meaningful as having a friend break up with your girlfriend for you and give her a rose to say you're sorry.
I very much hope T2 has a statement.
I know its all about the money but come on. There should be a little integrity here. At least the smallest interest in turning around the constant social demonization of the product and its enthusiasts.
Good then he won't be offended by GTA which ahs no point system and actually punishes you for killing police officers.
Here's the fix for your head, repeat until:
IT-IS-A-FUCKING-VIDEO-GAME!!!!1
Well, Duh. I know that GTAIV will be fictional. If they wanted to base it on reality they should have used that John Carpenter documentary "Escape from New-York".
Also, last time I checked, America is a continent not a country. New-York might be the safest big city in the United States but I'm sure a few big cities in Canada are safest.
You were in liberty city for what? 10 seconds in SA? It ges mentioned a few times?
Moral 1: Don't jump to conclusions. While I'd be surprised if the violence was toned down, they might tinker with the system a little bit. Maybe make the police less forgiving somehow. Hell, they can get rid of the prostitutes entirely for all I care - I don't recall them serving any function and I wouldn't miss them.
Moral 2: It's a game. My brain is still somewhat reeling from the concept of a game "unleashing a murderous rampage." I'd expect a headline like that from Weekly World News, perhaps, but I would imagine the NY Daily News would do a somewhat better job.
I am continually disappointed in T2. Silence is not the answer in the face of these kinds of inflamatory statements. I wonder often how different the world's outlook on video games might be right now if T2 had just stepped up and defended itself the first time someone spewed lies and inaccuracies about their product. Even now, years and many lawsuits later they refused to step up and do just that, and the entire gaming community has to suffer through this nonsense because of it.
I think the industry, and especially T2 needs to re-think this passive stance they have had. They need to get out there and correct the misconceptions that politicians and others have spewed across America and the rest of the world. It needs to be made clear to the public that video games are no more violent that their predecessors. Movies and books have a long standing history of as much or more violence that we see in video games. And video games don't hold a candle on violence to some paper-and-dice games I've seen.
Just like other forms of media, games cater to a large category of different tastes. Some people prefer their games less violent, some more. Just like some people favor violent horror / thriller movies, and some don't, or some people like violent fiction and some don't. It's all supposed to be dictated by the tastes and maturity of the consumer, or in the case of a minor the discretion of their parents. It's time that the industry tried to make this clear to the public.
Just my thoughts.
Miang
Since when do you sell pornography to children in the Grand Theft Auto series? Also, you may have been able to kill prostitutes, but it wasn't directly encouraged... Some people just did it out of their own perogative. Seems to me like the writer of the article hasn't played Grand Theft Auto a day in their life.
Now T2 releases a GT 4 trailer that depicts absolutely no violence and presents NYC in the best possible light (NYC has never looked so clean and safe!), and everybody is all up in arms about it. WTH!??
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying there was anything wrong with what they did in MGS 2 -- I just think it's funny how one potentially inflamatory (on a national scale) event (the MGS 2 scene) goes unnoticed but an entirely harmless one (the GT 4 trailer) gets everyone worked up for no good reason.
Grand Theft Auto 1, 2, 3, and part of San Andreas were all set in new york city. What is so different now than it has been in the previous 10 years...
It makes sense. We're all too agitated from the coffee up here.
beyond idiots
Awesome!!!!!
and of course they will never complain when Movies have new york in it cause *gasp* movies have free speech but these darn Video Machines dont dagnubbit!
Damn Morons with no brains or commen sense need to remove themselves from the genepool
And they're just NOW getting onto Take Two about setting GTA games in recreations of New York City? Liberty City has been a setting for at least four GTA games in the past, so what makes this one so different?
False- untrue ("selling pornography to kids, or advancing in the game by killing cops")
Defamation- ruining of character ("advancing by killing cops and prostitutes" false statements like these do defame the game)
Malice- intent to harm (politicians hate this game and will make the game seem as violent and horrible as possible to stop people from buying it)
To me, this looks like libel, and t2 should sue over this. They need to run some damage control and show people that GTA isn't as violent and explicit as everyone thinks.
BTW Halo. Disneyland. Awesome.
Ignorance and knee-jerk reactions ahoy.
...Points?
I can't recall the last game I played that had 'points'.
Ef the mayor or his publicist that put out this statement!!!! It is blatantly obvious that no one has played any of the games in the GTA franchise. Points for killing police officers, I think these idiots are attributing gaming with all gaming like in the 70s and 80s fear over D&D. The game play has changed but the chest pounding hasn't. Where's the fear over paintball guns? We dont have Hillary or anyone else attributing gun violence with kids who paintball. In short, ef off, play the darn games before you condemn them.
I doubt traffic gets him much considering the lack of advertising on the page and this is not an entertainment blog. This is a professional blog about politics and how they relate to videogames.
You can use google can't you?

Subject: Please retract this misinformation
From "Pols rage as vid game takes shot at city":
"In previous incarnations [of the Grand Theft Auto series], players advanced through the game by killing cops, selling pornography to children and killing prostitutes."
This statement is false on several counts. At no point in any Grand Theft Auto game does any character "sell pornography to children." More to the point, children do not even appear in any Grand Theft Auto game, except as occasional, inoffensive voices in radio ads.
Moreover, while the player does have the option to battle to the death with both cops and prostitutes, doing so has the opposite effect of "advancing through the game." Attacking prostitutes results in angry cops. Attacking said cops results in many more angry cops. (If the player persists, the military eventually shows up with tanks and F-16s.)
Misinformation about Grand Theft Auto is nothing new, but the truth is better any day. Somewhere out there, a real scumbag is actually[ selling pornography to children, and bogus stories about fictional scumbags just cloud the truth, distract from real-life problems, and harm the public's trust in mainstream journalism.
Please reword the article to be more truthful.
oversight has been out of fashion in politics for nearly 2 decades maybe even 3 since the Regan days, pop culture and the IQ drain on the populace has pretty much made sheeple easy to forgive and forget.
1)GTA IV takes place in a city earily similar to NY
2)Council Man Peter Vallhone said it is like placing Halo in Disneyland
3)Halo is made by Bungie
4)Bungie made the Marathon Trilogy
5)There is a mod map for Marathon Infinity where you are shooting it up in Disneyland.
How come I am more well informed about what GTA is and isn't than reporters, politicians, and lawyers. Since when did they skipped the investigation part that their job highly requires?
But knowing that you can sell pornography to childrens in the game, I MUST buy a copy of it.
And Halo in Disneyland, hhmmm, I could snipe you while ridding a roler coaster, you would never see me coming. Halo developers, please make that map downloadable from Xbox live I beg of you.
2. I want to see the trailer, how come it's not even in your blog post?
So what is the problem any way.. Let them yell as loud as they want. Maybe it will get on the front page of some major news organizations again, and get more free advertising!
i think, if T2 uses NY like model for the new GTA, they should enjoy-it like free commercial, from movie, it seams graphics will be really good, no better way to sell NY world (even in game mode) then this way (i really think NYC should observe game phenomenon like a promo option too, not that NY misses tourists or something, but hack , free commercials is for them nothing to lose, is a win/win stand-up, of course, if game is getting violent and all that, ratting is a must, and keeping kids out from playing-it goes on parents shoulders... read that rating label before u give your kid something if you care about him or stop nagging the rest)
and for politicians, better deal in really problems you were elected to take care of, then smoking out publicity stunts like this just to get some attention and btw. i think you better take care of educating parents in dealing with kids or support consequenscins
What you said was clearly trolling. I don't want the have a huge flame war but thats what it was.
HALO at Disneyland!!!!!!!!!!!
Politicians comment on this shite because of the lemmings approach: someone else is doing it. If another politician says something inflammatory, and you do not also comment, you look negligent. Without a doubt, if in November, 3 police get killed, there will be at least one idiot linking it directly to this game, and then the mayor and everyone else can say "I told you so." If they say nothing, rivals will chirp "The mayor ignored this menace!"
And that is why they are "outraged." So outraged... notice that the comment from the mayor is actually from a representative. There wasnt some press conference held.
Fucking press. uhk.
There is no uproar. This was a manufactured story. The "outrage" you're pointing to is nothing more than what we've been hearing time and time again - glamorizing violence is bad. There is nothing new here.
I'd appreciate it if people did not call me a troll. You may disagree with my opinion and attack my opinion all you like but please leave the personal attacks out of it. Thank you.
sincerely,
Dick Butterworth
Huh, last time I played any of my GTA games, I didn't remember selling porn to children, or advancing by killing cops. Huh, whoever wrote that is an idiot, plain and simple.
any way, back on topic. So GTA has a couple of NY land marks, big deal. Tons of games have some NY land marks and no one gave two spits about them. Along with the ones stated here already, what about Twisted Metal 2s level "Roof top rumble" where you can see the statue of liberty and shoot at it making it change appearance until it blows up.
Let's not forget the violence in the Spiderman movies, or for that matter how about.....
ESCAPE FROM NY? Where they turned the "Safest" city into a penal colony?
they're really reaching this time.
http://www.rockstargames.com/gta/cities/images/libertycitymap.jpg
The whole thing was street racing through different cities. I doubt they approve of that. Yet no one said a word.
We don't take kindly to trolls round these parts. So you should probably run the next time your in Disneyland and you see a Wart Hog coming straight at you.
I can't believe, of all things to get mad about, they choose this. GTA has been set in Liberty City, which we all know is based on NYC, multiple times. Are they just now getting up in arms about it because Rockstar made a concerted effort to include some of the more recognizable landmarks in GTA IV? They haven't even seen one 1 second of violent gameplay in the game and they're already getting their panties in a bunch.
I think what Technical Magician says is spot on. Movie and TV studios can buy the silence of city officials with whatever fees they have to pay to the city in order to film there. As long as you pay the toll, no one says boo about the content of your project. But watch out if you use the city's "likeness" without needing to shell out any money.
Few games punish you for being bad like GTA. The reason they are so much fun is *because* your actions have consequences. The joy in the games lies in triggering a major incident and screaming through city streets in a stolen sports car while special agents try to run you off the road and use you as a mobile ammo storage unit. It is the anarchic thrill of seeing just how much damage you can cause before the inevitable happens. If they make the police force even better, get rid of the respray shops or reduce your ability to lose the fuzz, GTA would *improve*.
Today’s headline:
“GTA4 Trailer Outrages NYC Pols – Honeymoon Over for New Take Two Owners”
Title of the sourced article:
“Pols rage as vid game takes shot at city”
Quotes from the sourced article:
“And outraged political leaders say the rampant brutality of the game, Grand Theft Auto IV, has little in common with reality.”
“"It's despicable to glamorize violence in games like these, regardless of how far-fetched the setting may be," said Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.”
Andrew Eisen
True Crime New York was in New York and they didnt bother. I guess because the game is not so known as GTA is.
And wheres the fuss if people under 17 cant (shouldnt) buy the game? If someone sells it to a kid, its his fault, not the makers fault.
Remember, people dont play GTA because you can commit crimes. Atleast me.
This time the outrage will be bigger because GTA has moved into photorealistic graphics.
If they ban this game, they should ban all M rated games. Why discriminate?
Well DUH thats the whole point
I've been counting down the days to the release of the trailer and am now considering hibernating until the game comes out :P
To be honest, GTA is no more 'suggestive' than some of the more racy 'National Lampoon' or 'Scary Movie' stuff, though people here are bringing up the worst of it, the way it's projected in game is far more reminiscent of these movies than of anything else.
Perhaps if these safety campaigners actually played the game they might realise that it's actually pretty harmless entertainment, and shooting at the police is discouraged.
I'm outraged at the sensationalist headline this website had to resort to.
I think most of the major landmarks in the video will be changed for the final game to differentiate it from NYC a little more.
They are just picking on Take-Two for no reason, because there were a number of other games that did just that (as named by a previous poster).
Halo in Disneyland? I'll be sniping on top of Cinderella's Castle =P
It makes them look better because they are now... all together now:
"Doing it for the children!"
I won't be surprised if these people would think the game is the best thing since sliced bread and gain a case of "selective lockjaw" if the city got a cut.
Safest big city my skinny white butt. Hell, the whole idea of running people over in taxi cabs came from walking down the streets of New York. You're not fooling anyone.
And "Setting Grand Theft Auto in the safest big city in America would be like setting Halo in Disneyland." I don't get his point, what's wrong with setting Halo in Disneyland?
…(GTA4) is set in a mythical city that bears a striking resemblance to New York… the trailer shows well-known landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Cyclone in Coney Island…"
and the Sapranos is not violent? what about gangs of new york.....I dont you burning hollywood down, try understanding the medium before you gather your pick fork and rope...
========================
"Setting Grand Theft Auto in the safest big city in America would be like setting Halo in Disneyland."
So New York is the Disney land in city form...dude can I ahve what you are smoking?
=========================
"The mayor does not support any video game where you earn points for injuring or killing police officers."
At least your not gathering pick forks .....yet......
I've been to New York, and trust me, Brooklyn isnt close to pleasantville
For those that are interested.
It's interesting to note that Vehicle Theft is lower today than it was before I was born though. And that the NYPD seems to have seriously kicked some ass in 1997 or something....
I.e. Point out the blatantly obvious to the deliberately blinkered ;)
JT, is constantly equating the series to pornography, and always claims that T2 is selling it to children, it's not that far of a stretch to think they are misunderstanding what he's saying after listening to a lot of his ranting
Basically, if you want to find something to take offence at, you will, this isn't about the game, it's about the fact it's GTA, it could have been set anywhere, anyhwhen, anyhow, and you can be sure that politicians would have found an excuse to take offence.
To be honest, they are getting very very predictable, dull and boring.
I sent a mail to the contact address of the NY Daily News article, explaining to them the innaccuracies in the report and asking for it to be amended. Unfortunately, with the correct information, it wouldn't seem so interesting so I doubt that they will change it.
If I wrote an article for a newspaper/site claiming there was nudity or foul language in Disney's The Little Mermaid, their lawyers would be down on me like a ton of bricks. Why can't Take Two get out there and stamp on the little lies and mistakes which left alone gather into the same kind of ignorance that leads people to say "Oh that's the cop killing game".
Halo. In Disneyland. *gets evil grin, but is not sure why*
...Anyway, what drives me nuts more than anything, more than the ridiculous claims that you "advance" (instead of getting screwed over) by killing cops, or that you sell pornography to children in the game, is the fact that the mayor here is talking about "earning points" for doing stuff like that.
Newsflash, world: Most serious games do not involve earning "points" any more, with the obvious exceptions of sports games, experience points in RPGs, and X360 Achievement Points. "Points" in the sense of early arcade games like Pac-Man or Galaga are nearly dead. The goal of a game is, more often than not, just to make it to the end. In GTA, you do not earn "points" for killing police officers. (Unless Rockstar puts in an Achievement in GTA4...*shudders*)
Also: I'm tired of people describing GTA as "ultraviolent". God of War is ultraviolent. Manhunt is ultraviolent. GTA is only as violent as you make it, and the *required* amount of violence for finishing the game is, as far as I know, relatively tame compared to some games out there. (However, I've only played one of the games once, and somewhat briefly. Correct me if I'm wrong about this.)
I think I know where the selling-pornography-to-children thing came from. The NY Daily News must have caught a few of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named's statements about Take Two's sales of GTA (with Hot Coffee) on the radar, and misinterpreted them as referring to actions in the game itself.
Then the mayor can support this game without worry. The only thing you earn by harming the police in the previous games is more cops after you, and maybe a few extra seconds on the run. "
And eventually the FBI then the National Guard.
"Setting Grand Theft Auto in the safest big city in America would be like setting Halo in Disneyland."
No it wouldn't. I'm surprised, almost no one but the person who likely shat bricks over this trailer would talk like this.
Then the mayor can support this game without worry. The only thing you earn by harming the police in the previous games is more cops after you, and maybe a few extra seconds on the run.
The point they are trying to make, indirectly, is that it is better to kill real people than people in games (i can imagine lots of ppl play games to let off some steam).
Who cares that its situated in new york? we just need a sandbox city, it has no deeper thought behind it, they act like its a conspiracy against NYC, like putting it in bad daylight or something. Its a big political trick to get some media attention. They should focus on more important things, like sorting the whole F'in out of control nation they run, out!

going around but ill find out tonight! Im so excited
By the way fuck the police they shoot, tazer and/or kill innocent people every day and they also arrest people and lock them away for a long time for weed but theres a fucking liquor store on every corner.
Brilliant - I'm a brit and I've been playing GTA4 for a while now. I'd LOVE for a future GTA to be set in London or Manchester.
Some of the Halo/Disney references are awesome.
Its mental that these politicians are so concerned about a fictional game and don't seem to care about real life issues. I bet they play GTA4 when they're supposed to be working on climate change legislation "From Home"
All RockStar have to do is create one paragraph in the manual saying 'This online game is set in an alternate universe where public transport is still at 1970-80's stages, but medical knowledge can completely re-assemble a human being from just a few cells. It is impossible for anyone to die, why do you think you wake up in a hospital after being hit by a rocket launcher?
