Get-Well Gamers Foundation Facing Shutdown

Get-Well Gamers Foundation Facing Shutdown

April 9, 2007
Sad news this morning from Ryan Sharpe, head of the Get-Well Gamers Foundation, a volunteer organization which provides donations of used video games and systems to a network of children's hospitals around the United States.

Ryan, a longtime GP reader and contributor, sent an e-mail which describes the difficulty he is experiencing in keeping GWG going. The issues seem to be of the time and space variety.

Ryan, who is trying to juggle his degree program with the operation of the Foundation, also mentions that the donated games and systems are overwhelming his capacity to store them. Coupled with the loss of two dedicated volunteers, the wheels of GWG are grinding to a halt. Ryan writes:
The Foundation has grown tremendously since I first started it. Unfortunately, my capacity to deal with the foundation has not grown accordingly.  If anything, it has decreased, as my workload increases the closer I get to graduation...

I had two staffers who I could trust to help me run the foundation... (GP: great guys, I met them at E3 last year) Unfortunately, one of them recently moved to Washington, and the other has full-time school and a part-time job to contend with...

We need a shipping manager... We need a secretary... We need someone to handle our website.  We need an accountant...  Most of all we need an office...

So, barring some miraculous occurrence, this can't happen...  So when you notice the website is down and you haven't heard of any new hospitals or whatnot, it's because of this.  The foundation has grown beyound the capabilities of its founder, and there's no one available to take the reigns.

Again, thank you very much for your support over the years, and I hope we can work together again when the Foundation starts back up.  I can promise at least that I'll never let the Foundation die - it just has to rest for a while until there's someone that can take care of it.

This seems to be happening already, as the GWG domain hosting apparently expired in late March. It would be great to see someone step up and help Ryan keep the Get-Well Gamers Foundation running. Is there a white knight out there who can save the GWG?

Here at GamePolitics, we've always supported the GWG. In fact, the organization was the beneficiary of our well-known Pixelante T-shirt contest in which GP readers created wonderful shirts that turned a certain Miami attorney's anti-gamer pejorative into a plus for sick children. (you can still order Pixelante shirts, by the way, with all proceeds going directly to GWG)

I'm willing to renew the domain and anything else I can do. Question is are the hospitals wanting this? If so I would love to help out. I just dont want to store a bunch of old systems with out anyone wanting them. If you want to contact me do so at mlusak AT yahoo DOT com
Hey Ryan. Well, you know me pretty well, and of course any way I can help out, you know I'm there for you buddy. Frankly I'm just glad you are still alive. Hit me up, you know how to reach me. I'd be only too glad to help out.
Ryan, I run a 2 year old video game site at http://www.gamerenegades.com/ and a video game student organization at Iowa State University. I would like to throw a LAN party sometime and help raise money for the organization and maybe help get some volunteers and maybe more. If you're interested, please let me know. moethelawn [AT] gamerenegades [DOT] com
Ryan: if I can help in any way, please let me know: mike @ thethompsons dot org
True Story about Ryan:

I worked with Ryan for a while at a game developer. I can honestly say, he was one of the coolest, down to earth people I've ever met. He was trying to juggle his work load, and his time for GWG. In the end, he ended up posting his notice with the developer, to spend more time for GWG. Thats how seriously he was committed to helping sick kids feel better. I gotta give props for that. It takes some serious Brass Balls to make that kind of decision.

Ryan, if you read this, I'd like to help out anyway I can. I relocated to Seattle, but I'd like to help. jorgo AT engineer DOT com
I could maybe help out with the web stuff -- I do web design and development -- but alas, I don't live in Seattle so there's not much I could help you with there.

If you need assistance with the web stuff, though, I'd be happy to help.

@ darkbishop:

We've attempted to work with Penny-Arcade in the past, but their refusal to deal in used games pretty much ensures they don't do and won't ever do what the Foundation does. It would be nice to have worked with them towards our common goal, but I've been told it will pretty much never happen, unfortunately.
I have a ton of webspace available that i'd be willing to donate. You could transfer the domain, or I can setup a subdomain for GWG. I would help with running as much as possible but really you would still need someone to else to help maintain the site.

If you're interested email me at admin@asmedias.net
I agree, they should merge with Penny Arcade's Child's Play.
While I myself can't be much of a help to fix things - I can think of a few people who might - I would recommend people contact the crew over at Penny Arcade and 8bitTheater concerning this. We know the reach PA has already, and as it happens, Brain Clevinger (the writer of 8BT) actually managed to rescue the local Connecticon here when he mentioned its troubles on his site. I'll be contacting them myself, but I'm assuming the more people who do the better.
Hey Ryan, Ive emailed you before to offer help and you said you had it covered.... I cry for the neglect... :(

Anyways, I can help if you want it. I can host, site, help run this and provide a office in my dallas office for my other company www.GURadio.com so if help is what you need I can offer it. I also travel already to the gaming events so I can be in the main eye of the expos and conventions. email me if you need help me AT bluewolf72 DOT com
Where is GWG based out of? If they're near the SF Bay Area, I'd love to give them a hand.
Ryan, email me, I might be able to do webhosting and general managment of the website.

A certain someone is gonna happy dance about this, I know it....
Isn't it a good idea to hook these guys up with Penny-Arcade ? They do all sorts of stuff for charity. Combining this with Childs Play would be a good idea IMHO.

JDKJ: Which could be explained by both (a) and (b).
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:56am
Austin_Lewis: JDKJ: You forgot C) the fact that, for some reason, every time he did something that would suggest he shouldn't be in the military, let alone an officer, higher ups ignored it or let it slide.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:51am
JDKJ: Part of the problem is, I believe, that (a) the Army had a lot of time and money already invested in him and which they were unwilling to simply write-off and (b) an increasing need for the type of skills and services he provided.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:48am
JDKJ: And that even if he was begging not to get cut loose, he was apparently a real good candidate for being cut loose, anyway.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:11am
JDKJ: @chada: And while Kennedy once noted that there's usually more than enough blame for everyone to get a slice, the possibility that the Army was unwilling to cut loose someone who was asking to get cut loose could be a factor.

chadachada321: Whoops, was out of the convo for awhile. I do wonder what type of ammo he used etc, but the real issue is WHY he did it, not HOW
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:56am
JDKJ: But if it turns out that they actually did, they'll have Hell to pay.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:45am
JDKJ: And I'd tend to rule out the possibilty of FN Herstal supplying restricted ammunition to someone merely because they're ordering it from a military base.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:37am
JDKJ: I know you don't leave your gated community and get around much in dark alleys, so you may be surprised to learn that there's this thing called "the black market" where, if you've got enough money, ain't too much of anything which can't be bought.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:36am
Austin_Lewis: Or, maybe he or someone else at the base ordered the SS190 from FN Herstal.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:32am
Austin_Lewis: the hands of private owners. They run about 300 dollars minimum for a box of 50, and boxes of AP 5.7 are extremely scarce, mainly residing in the hands of Class III stores or individuals who for one reason or another got a demo box of it.
