Postal Designer Talks Manhunt 2 with GameSpot

June 22, 2007
GameSpot's Brendan Sinclair has a nice interview with a guy who knows a thing or two about video game violence controversies - Vince Desi (left) of Running with Scissors. Among Desi's comments:
Whether I or any other developer or gamer likes, loves, or hates Manhunt 2 is not the issue. The real issue is we as an industry allow ourselves to be set up. I'm a big fan of the ESRB, I think in general they do a great job.

The dilemma is that while we are supposedly a free society...  the fact is government, hypocritical politicians, and the media dictate directly and indirectly who wins and loses, or who gets to play, so to speak. Does Hillary really have a clue?

...I think there is a need for both [ESA & ESRB], but I agree I would prefer them to be independent, and I truly believe it would be more helpful to our industry. Clearly it would improve their credibility. RWS has always supported both groups, regardless of how we've been scapegoated in the industry...

The video game industry is too easy for [politicians] to complain about, and with a presidential election next year I can only imagine the pseudo talking points we'll be hearing. It could be the only issue the Democrats and Republicans agree upon.

Catch the full interview here.

they say that until they get elected then take the status quo to new heights...er lows..... er carnage....ya carnage is right....
Wait, I thought the ESA and ESRB were independent -- that was the whole point of forming them, so that we didn't have to let 'da guvmint' try and rate games and whatnot.

They're technically independent, but they deal with a lot of pressure from the government (read: vote-hungry pols). Plus, a lot of these bills planning to restrict "violent" or "explicit" games would basically turn the ESRB into a regulatory agency relied on by the government, unless they plan on creating a new ratings board.
Who gives a wank what he thinks? The Postal games are a waste of space. Gameplay is abominably bad and despite what some have claimed there is zero clever or insightful commentary on anything. It doesn't satirise people, it just insults them.

thats not the point the point is censorship, if the indusrty and the goverment had the balls to make a adult game class that would not be treated like shit this all would go away and games liek postal and manhunt would sale on their own merit not the contravserty they bring.
I hate the Postal games with a passion, but think Desi is one of the most insightful voices within the industry on this issue.
Id be down with a new ratings board. ESRB sucks.
Terrible Tom
sadly even it the ESRB droped dead and something else replaced it retail would still defcto ban adult gaming....

Austin_Lewis: Health insurance, brought to you by the same kind of bureacrats who couldn't, in timely fashion, investigate the comments of any of the men Obama appointed Czars. Or their past. Or their history of not paying taxes.

Austin_Lewis: Yes, and what a piece of crap it was. Arresting and fining people just because they don't make a personal choice to buy healh insurance, creating over a hundred new bureacracies, and worse.

JDKJ: BREAKING: In a photo-finish at the wire, House passes health care reform bill. Relatedly, in a fit of pique, Austin Lewis kicks innocent dog.

JDKJ: Which could be explained by both (a) and (b).
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:56am
Austin_Lewis: JDKJ: You forgot C) the fact that, for some reason, every time he did something that would suggest he shouldn't be in the military, let alone an officer, higher ups ignored it or let it slide.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:51am
JDKJ: Part of the problem is, I believe, that (a) the Army had a lot of time and money already invested in him and which they were unwilling to simply write-off and (b) an increasing need for the type of skills and services he provided.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:48am
JDKJ: And that even if he was begging not to get cut loose, he was apparently a real good candidate for being cut loose, anyway.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:11am
JDKJ: @chada: And while Kennedy once noted that there's usually more than enough blame for everyone to get a slice, the possibility that the Army was unwilling to cut loose someone who was asking to get cut loose could be a factor.

chadachada321: Whoops, was out of the convo for awhile. I do wonder what type of ammo he used etc, but the real issue is WHY he did it, not HOW
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:56am
JDKJ: But if it turns out that they actually did, they'll have Hell to pay.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:45am
JDKJ: And I'd tend to rule out the possibilty of FN Herstal supplying restricted ammunition to someone merely because they're ordering it from a military base.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:37am
JDKJ: I know you don't leave your gated community and get around much in dark alleys, so you may be surprised to learn that there's this thing called "the black market" where, if you've got enough money, ain't too much of anything which can't be bought.
