The Darkness Banned in Singapore, According to Report

July 2, 2007 -
Another week, another Take Two game gets banned.

This time, it's the government of Singapore and the game getting the chop is The Darkness, according to a brief report on Game Axis. Here's what the Singapore-based site is saying:
It's official now, coming straight from the folks from New Era - the distributor responsible for bringing in games from 2K. The Darkness is officially banned in Singapore for what the local censorship have dubbed excessive violence.

So it's another 2K title that bites the dust in Singapore, since we can forget EVER about seeing GTA IV here. Oh, and the latest rumor is that Bioshock might be banned here as well for the same reason that the former 2 games won't ever be sold here too. Comments are opened below as usual.

most of asian region countries are depending on SINGAPORE to supply ORIGINAL games. DONT u think banning games will make PIRACY stronger in ASIA??

Oh yeah. I'm about to get my copy of the game at a local shop here in KL. As someone mentioned above, game enforcement in Malaysia is lax unless serious amounts of nudity is involved AFAIK.

As for the game being banned in Singapore, it is officially banned but that doesn't mean that it can't be found there. Of course, the shop that still carries the title in its inventory would have to sell it quietly.

I was banned? Hmm... You sure? I live in Singapore! I just saw a picture of "The Darkness" box art on a local game store, for Sale. Out of Stock! Yeah, "BANNED IN S'PORE", like I believe.

Haha! LOL! I just bought a copy of "The Darkness" from a local game store for my friend! Have a good laugh! Right here at Ang Mo Kio! Banned? You kidding? I bought all my GTA games right here in Singapore, from GTA3-VCS! This is really laughable!

Things aren't looking too good for Take Two then. Hopefully Grand Theft Auto IV won't be banned in the US and Canada. If they are, October won't be the most pleasant month for me. Like there's any other reason to have a 360.

Watch out for Singaporean propaganda! Prime example would be a anti-piracy group namely "hip".

great now what.....

Screw Singapore! That country has been effectively run by the People's Action Party (my ***) since it's founding. Their media is effectively state-owned, and their government is full of hypocrites about talking democracy yet have law-and-order polices, and if a politically self-aware citizen makes any criticism, even one constructive, and even if its true, the PAP can sue that person into exile. God help the Singaporeans, they have to deal with the PAP for almost 50 years.

@ZippyDSMlee

I was referring to the hentai games. Some of that is beyond f-ed up. Also looking at some of the Manga they have at most book stores that Japanese bussniess men read on the train every morning (yes, i was there for a bit) made me cringe. So really, if something was banned there I would be surprised. The only thing I could see them banning is a WWII game about the Bombs.

@ Sidewinder

Bullhog. Example, not ONE Starforce-protected game has as of this time managed to recover it's production costs. Dawn of War and Company of Heroes, two UNPROTECTED GAMES, have made bestsellers and one is pretty much widely reckoned as the strategygame of this CENTURY.

Seriously, ask yourself the following question: Why pay millions of dollars in licensing obstructive protection software that harms more casual users (SecuRom7 and Starforce are infamous for blocking LEGIT buyers from playing their game), and yet nothing more than a bit of more work for the pirates? SecuRom is cracked on the game's release date, Starforce a week later. The pirates still get the game, the casual buyers DON'T (after all, StarForce3 is known to sometimes corrupt windows dvd/cd drivers).

Game is out. It’s short, and no worse than any other demonic violent game (Doom, Quake, etc). These developers need to finally realize consoles are the devil, and PCs will reign supreme in edgy titles.

I hope so... I really hope so. Anyway, it's alarming to see a kind of political campaign against T2... It's strange and it's stupid.

And so, with one announcement, Singapore lost half of its population; everyone rioted; the politician who made the announcement was thrown off of a cliff, and yet again, there was peace.

Singapore can continue calling itself the richest country in the world, but deeds speak better than words as you may find yourself being hated by other countries despite being rich. Remember, fools always place greed and pride over selflessness.

Singapore ranks also quite low on the Reporter's Without Border's ranking as well.....

At least I have one more country NOT to visit....

Singapore: Where you'll get the deathpenalty for something that in other countries can get you only fined.

Singapore should be mass boycotted.

"Where you’ll get the deathpenalty for something that in other countries can get you only fined."

Only if you bring drugs into the country, then you're a dead man. As for entertainment stuff, I don't think that they will hang you for that. Man, this article makes me want to go back to my hometown England.

Double post:

This is not the first time my birth country has banned a excessive violence material, it includes movies like Cannibal Holocaust and Clockwork Orange. Ha, so much for calling itself "supportive of creativity and free speech". You think words can change everything? This article may prove you wrong.

Hey wait a minute.... Singapore is my birthplace and I am staying in it now! Oh man....

Well, Singaporeans could always just drive across the Causeway and pick up a copy of The Darkness in Malaysia since it isn't banned. There's no censorship or ratings board here for video games, so enforcement is lax. And as far as I know, the Malaysian distributor of New Era parallel imports it, so the Singapore ban shouldn't affect it.

Well, banning the game itself is rather stupid a pointless. The game itself is based off a comic book witch (in graphic detail) shows off what kind of deaths these demons can perform. So to ban the game, you should really also ban the comic. But you can't ban comics, they have tried, and failed. Comics, and games, are a form of expression from the creators and mainly the directors. To ban these media's is to ban their opinions from ever reaching the publics ears. We just have to sit here and wait out the wave of protests and slander that cover each new media. Just look at Rock-n-Roll, and rap, Those are accepted forms of art today, but when they first came around, they too were the voices of satin, and the causers of crime.

ZippyDSMLee
well...theres not really a black list nor are they sold in so called "brown bags".
as i said in the case of San Andreas, yes it is banned (not because of hot coffee, its banned way before that) but there is not a no import ban so thats why if you look around real carefully you'll find one somewhere(an original copy of course).

Even the movie Sin City is banned in cinemas here but that thats not stopping most ppl from importing it.

"Banned in Singapore"
Any other country and I might be surprised, but Singapore... saw that coming a mile away.

utterloon
theres always a misconception some where,so how dose a ban work there black listed and sold in "brown bags" behind the counter at stores or full on no import ban like Aus/Britain?
Its one thing to ban the sale in public stores its another to ban it from importing and private stores and such.

Archgabe
well a few games get edit for violence in japan, but bans....they have raped based hentai games for Christ sake...

*sings "America, Fuck Yeah!"*

I want to try that game.

Meh, I dont care. Singapore can do what it wants. It is not a significant enough place to start a world wide ban of anything, let alone a videogame. I would be mor worried if it was Canada or Japan that banned something, because if thoes two places (Japan more for the fact that there are some games there that make Manhunt 2 look like a Teen title) banned something it would warrant attention and consideration.

If jack starts saying "look, they banned it in Singapore! Ban it here too!" then the most common response would be "why?" Sorry, anyone from Singapore. I dont mean to offend but Singapore is not a world leading entity.

I'm happy to be an American.
IN AMERICA!

And Asia just continues with the game hatin'. First China cracks down on MMOs, then the Vietnamese press calls for a ban on computer games because of irresponsible parents/school staff, now this.

And yet they all still want to develop a globalized economy based on high-tech consumer goods. How pathetic.

hi...uhhh...longtime reader, first time poster and Singapore citizen.

yes,the ban on The Darkness is embarrassing on i'm sure most of the gamer community here but really it just means that the game will be harder to get thats all. GTA: San Andreas was banned here too but that didn't stop some stores to importing limited numbers and sell them off.

and no we are not a fascist police state Hitler loving queers (the ban on chewing gum is gone by the way) we don't ban games cos "OmgZ TeH GaMeZ ArE Teh DeVIl oF TeH WeSt, BURN THEM!!!" we have no jack thompsons here fortunately.

Figures since it's a fascist police state that hangs people for possessing some Jamaican grass. Oh well since Singapore is a city-state, people can just cross the border to Indonesia and get it.....if they don't ban it too.

That's absolutely stupid. Leave it to those damn censorcrats!

@ BmK

A result of piracy. Due to a lower amount of piracy on the consoles several studios are now targeting them instead of the PC marked. That's why Epic went to the consoles with Gears (or that's what my local gaming journalists says).

BTW anyone know when it will ported to PC?

I hope it does, this game looks sweet. I'm also hoping that Resistance and Gears of War get released on PC to. It used to be that all FPS shooters were released on PC first and then on the consoles. Now it's the other way around if at all.

BTW anyone know when it will ported to PC?
I refuse to buy a new system to play crappy games on :P

Heil I thought Germany was bad *L* (j/k)

jokes aside any goverment that bans media to adults needs its head in tis ass checked, its one thing with its censorship by proxy (console makers or the ratingboards frowning on it) its another when the goverment says no and confiscates imports like Brittan and Aus ,at least Germany lets you have it in a round about way.

i'm not surprised, singapores fascist conservative governmemnt outlaws stuff ranging from porn to chewing gum, as mentioned before. and i am not joking. those bastards will hang a guy just for having a dimebag of pot, the governments is run by pathetic prude pussies that deserve to rot in their own prisons.

I can rant about that hellhole all day if i felt like it, and dont get me started on freedom of speech, if i was living there right now, i would probably get six months in jail for "slandering" the governement, when everyone knows its the truth, you cant imagine how much i hate that place,my friend and i paid a couple thousand dollars just for littering, and i think he was fined even more just for bringing a pepsi on the subway, and no offence to anyone who might live there, but that place sucks ass

Wow that sucks.

Game is out. It's short, and no worse than any other demonic violent game (Doom, Quake, etc). These developers need to finally realize consoles are the devil, and PCs will reign supreme in edgy titles. Plus, even if they do edit crap out just to get a rating, someone will almost definitely make a mod to mimic it, or release a leaked version of code, etc.

It's Singapore. Is chewing gum still banned there? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chewing_gum_ban_in_Singapore)

The only other thing I know about it is they used to sell a lot of pirated anime from there, oddly enough for a country based on "law and order."

The creatures you can conjure, not to mention the snakies-of-a-sort that ride your shoulders during the game can do some really bad things to your enemies in the game. Bodies torn apart, hearts ripped out, basic dark forces inflicting gore upon the world.

Has this game even come out yet? The trailers looked violent but you can never know till you actually play the game just how violent it will be.

And why was it banned???

ZippyDSMleePETA must hate furries too.....02/03/2015 - 5:35am
Andrew EisenPETA has a ton of gems but my personal favorite is "by wearing the skin of an animal [it's refering to the Tanooki Suit], Mario is sending the message that it's OK to wear fur." http://gamepolitics.com/2011/11/14/peta-targets-mario-latest-campaign02/03/2015 - 3:39am
Goth_SkunkI was drawing a blank for examples of animal abuse portrayed in games and that one was the first that game to mind, due to how ridiculous it was.02/03/2015 - 3:32am
Andrew EisenAnd if anyone's wondering about the "stabbing a rat" thing, that was PETA on a sequence in Battlefield 3. http://gamepolitics.com/2011/11/07/peta-upset-over-battlefield-3-rat-backstab02/03/2015 - 3:05am
Andrew EisenJust to be clear, no one is suggesting games need to follow some inclusivity checklist, no one is asking for games to be forced to conform to any particular standards, and Sarkeesian and her ilk also want more from games, not less.02/03/2015 - 3:04am
Goth_SkunkI am all for getting games to explore more issues as they get larger in scope, but I am *not* in favour of them being forced to conform to standards of political correctness. I want *more* from my games, not *less.*02/03/2015 - 3:01am
Goth_SkunkBut nitpicking about things like Damsel tropes, or meeting a non-white, non-hetero character quota, or stabbing a rat to crawl through a pipe is a ridiculous waste of time, in this member's opinion.02/03/2015 - 2:56am
Goth_SkunkGames *do* have messages and meaning. And not all of them are comfortable, either. And they do so while keeping the experience enjoyable, meaningful.02/03/2015 - 2:50am
Andrew EisenThat's enough, folks.02/03/2015 - 2:11am
MechaCrashYou know what else is uncalled for? Your whiny tone policing.02/03/2015 - 1:54am
Sora-Chan@MechCrash my complaint is more direct at how you reacted. When someone is leaving you do not run up behind them and kick them in the ass out the door. Hense, what you said, was uncalled for. It doesn't matter who it is.02/03/2015 - 1:40am
Andrew EisenPlus (and I know you didn't say otherwise, I just feel it's important to point out) there's nothing wrong with discussing the elements of games that you take issue with or find problematic.02/03/2015 - 1:34am
Andrew EisenMatthew - That's one way to handle it but you'd potentially be missing out on a ton of great games. After all, just because a game has elements that may rub some the wrong way doesn't mean they aren't worth playing.02/03/2015 - 1:33am
MechaCrashSave your crocodile tears. I'm glad to be rid of the people who complain when games get treated as a form which can have messages and meanings and demand they be relegated to simplistic toys, to be played with and discarded.02/03/2015 - 1:12am
Sora-Chan@MechCrash Simpley put: Uncalled for.02/03/2015 - 1:03am
MechaCrashThank you for confirming you want games to remain the playthings of children and not art of any kind, Wonderkarp, and good riddance.02/03/2015 - 12:23am
Goth_SkunkThe tropes that bother me the most don't appear in video games: Dumb/Jerk Jock trope, Narcissitic Psycopath (when male), and Dad Is A Homophobe But Unaware Child is Homosexual.02/02/2015 - 10:22pm
prh99They can make zombie games all they want, I just wish they mix it up a bit. My use vampires etc or some Lovecraftian horrors.02/02/2015 - 10:09pm
Matthew WilsonI tend to be on the side of free markets. if you do not like a trope, do not buy a game that uses that trope.02/02/2015 - 9:59pm
prh99MechaTama: Yeah, the zombie apocalypse stuff is just getting old, and infestation scenarios aren't much better.02/02/2015 - 9:57pm
