Joystiq Sporting a New Look - Just in Time for E3

July 9, 2007

We note this morning that Joystiq (where GP pens The Political Game column) has gotten an extreme makeover.

Looks good from here. What do you think?

[...] This Monday was a nice day wasn’t it? Well, I don’t quite remember how my day was, but I know that it meant a change of looks for two of my favorite sites: Joystiq and The Escapist. GamePolitics.com mentioned the change in Joystiq’s appearance and I myself got to see the brief (I think) temporary page in The Escapist while they were changing their skin. The nice thing is that it was titled “The Escapist: BRB” and was a file called “lol_afk.htm” (I’m not sure about the extension) and had a single picture: [...]
I am sorry for numerous posts in this topic. I should have waited to post the last message.

My issue is with the Xbox 360, Wii, PS3, PSP, Nintendo DS, PC, Mac and PS2. It just looks like it could be centered with the article section. If it doesn't look right try shrinking the search bar a bit and then see if it looks right.
When I speak of centering I mean centering with the center portion where the actual articles are displayed. Right now the console list appears to display slightly to the right. I'm not sure if it is that way on everyone else's computer or not. My resolution is set at 1280x1024 so that might have to do with something.
Yea, I know how it is. You guys are extremely ethical compared to my webmaster days. But cut me some slack... I was like 12 and trying to take advantage of pay-per-click ads... and actually did.

I understand you gotta do what you gotta do but if you ask for my opinion, I'll shoot strait and tell you what I think. =).

I will say I do enjoy both of your websites (I look at them multiple times daily) and I must say that they do work. And thats all that really needs to happen. Websites just need to work, nothing more really. I do think that on that the RSS feed and console list(top menu) would be better if you increased the font size. This would help center the link-text as well as bring more emphasis to it. Might even just be able to make it bold.... experiment with it... Although... I if I was GP webmaster I would hook up IGDA with small portion of free ad-space just to support them.
Again I dislike the sidebars too. Sidebars are cool and all but I usually prefer mine either all left or all right. With the sidebars on BOTH the left and right and them being so cluttered it almost squishes the actual content. Sure it might be the same size as before but like an optical illusion it seems like the content box is smaller than before and you are trying to milk your paragraphs for all their worth page length wise.
Next step: shiny new journalistic integrity to match.

Ha ha, only kidding. Everyone knows the best way to gain readers is to be full of shit.
thanks for the feedback, everyone. re: ads, hey, someone has to pay the bills. dennis puts a ton of work into this site, and we put a ton of work into joystiq. both are totally and completely free for you to use. i'd just as soon not have any, but that's not really an option.

re: the sidebars, we're working to remove the link cruft in there -- it's not unknown to us. =)

see you soon dennis!
If your going for cluttered then good job.

Central portion, where the story is located is fine, it looks great but the two side bars are so cluttered it just prevents me from even trying to figure out what is located there. That and Advertisements are take up so much of the space it seems like they are more important than the actual text and links on the side. I have the same issue with this website/blog. The advertisements dominate the menu bar. So instead of seeing that awesome collection of links that you have I see advertisements that I try to ignore and end up just annoying me. I'd move the collection of links to just below the ECA ad, move the game news ticker and twitter down below the links. Its a good collection of links. Id try to bring more attention to it somehow and I moving it up would allow more folks to notice it just a little bit better.

On the top menu... I think its alright, Id try to bring more emphasis to the [RSS | Categories] links and also the Xbox360, Wii, PS3, PSP, Nintendo DS, PC, Mac and PS2 links since thats what I am more likely to care about. If you wish to expand on the top menu's image links I would recommend making it scroll through them kind of like IGN's webpage does with their recent articles and such. Keep it the size you have now though, I wouldn't make it dominate the page like they do.

Overall I think the design is good. The side bars really annoy me, hopefully it doesn't have anything useful in them because I don't want to explore them. Which I guess effectively keeps me focused on the articles and the top menu.
“the market itself on the retail side of things will make sure that AO games are limited ,so grow up already…..”

gaa morning + coffe + 3 hours till I am woke up to udnerstand anythign >>

anyway the design is not bad.
"the market itself on the retail side of things will make sure that AO games are limited to grow up already….."
sites are moving to a higher res layout,so on 1XXX by 1XXX its not bad looking.

Anyway

My take on the mess is its unbalanced leaning tot he side of censorship, the ESRB is doing a ok job but they can do better(mostly with more stable rating to PG13/M/AO titles but then again its more art than science I guess), the next thing I would like to see is the PR blitz on no AO games on our systems be dropped, really MS/Sony/nin,take the thumb out of your as and let AO games be put on your systems, you are adding unneeded stress to the ESRB by claiming godwin and not letting adults have their media, the market itself on the retail side of things will make sure that AO games are limited so grow up already.....
It would look better if the column of ads was actually on the side where it belongs, instead of directly above the article text.
