Senator is a Level-70 Dwarf Priest in World of Warcraft

July 24, 2007
What if a senator was playing games instead of bashing them?

It's already happening in Guam, where as reported by the Pacific Daily News, Sen. Ray Tenorio (left) is a serious, level-70 WoW player. Tenorio's avatar is a Dwarf priest named Paleray on the Silverhand server. He's a member of a guild, of course, the Knights of the Marianas.

From the PDN report:
Tenorio has been gaming online... for years. His previous game of choice was Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, where he had several top-level characters of various classes. But in November [2005], his brother Charlie made an earnest plea... "We need a healer..."

Of WoW, Tenorio said:
What I like about World of Warcraft is it's a great way to be able to reach out and connect with other people. So many different people play -- attorneys, accountants, geeks, ... all kinds of people.

What makes World of Warcraft so alluring is that it's always reinventing and adding new content. There's always something new to come back to.

Guam is a territory of the United States and has one non-voting member in the U.S. House of Representatives. Tenorio is a member of Guam's 15-member unicameral legislature. His official website is here.

Digg!

or as Jack Thompson would have it (how is the heart btw? try blaming that on rockstar) "US Senator Days Weeks or Months from flipping and running through the halls of Capitol Hill with a Mace in one hand and a Bottle of Tears in the other Dismembering Murdering Destroying the poor innocent Senate!. Stop this now before we are kneedeep in the burning legion!
WoW ftw!x
We could use more people like him in office. He might actually know what he's talking about instead of making judgments based on 5 minute biased exhadurated clips.

If he is interested in the position, I would gladly vote for him as President too.
Respect here from denmark!
If i could, i would gladly vote for Ray Tenorio as president ;)
@Nate

Guam man, think about that, Guam. What else is he going to do?
Heck, I really will write his name in for President come election time. I am so disillusioned with politics and the usual Politician that it is simply refreshing to hear one talk so straightforward. And I do not mean the so called "plain talk" that Bush uses (or attempts to use). Bushisms, anyone?

He's 999/1000 exalted with eight factions. I like that politicians are playing video games, but I don't know that they should be playing more than I am.
Nice, but Alliance? heh, don't matter. I'm glad to see an actual gamer and not someone who plays Second Life and thinks hes one (Still don't see it as an actual game).
Don't get me started at WoW. I will ignore that that is the game he plays and say, "Nice, a gamer in politics woot."

In other words, these Sentators do not have enough work to keep them busy.

By the way, your link to Knights of Marianas has no player names Paleray listed. Kicked out?

From the looks of it, he's got some decent epics there.

Wait a minute. I thought the Rouchies said that someone who plays video games can't accomplish anything. Whoops there goes that theory culties.
Interesting fact, he's a republican.
can he heal our governtment lol (sorry had too)
Found it funny that I see this at the top of the main page while a story in the news ticker about WoW membership reaching 9,000,000 is immediatly to the right. Nice timing, GP.
Thanks, that confused me because I like Jackie Chan and I couldn't believe he would said that.

@hilaryduffgta
"oh well till then i have gta and duff"
you have duff beer? how does that taste? hahahahaha

Back on topic,
Lmao i wouldnt know i dont drink beer i smoke.....i mean i dont do anything wrong i read the bible!!!!!!!
How much EXP do you get for signing off on legal ammendments?

I think the press would have been a lot meaner if he played some kind of undead warlock female!!
Lmao

Undead was always a pain in the a** to play
@Jer

I'm not sure, it took me a few moments to understand he meant jack Thompson, not Jackie Chan the actor.
WOoohooooooo

yay WOrld of warcraft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And a level 70 priest!! Damn thats pretty good

@Jer

it was said sometime by jacky boy when Gp was still Live journal
im sure you can....maybe you will get a discount on an epic mount
God i need a decent comp to play world of warcraft on again....ahhh if only alexandra would be out in cali already.......then me and my gamer girl could play it together

oh well till then i have gta and duff
@ hilaryduffgta

I think you are going for the South Park episode "Make love not warcraft"
But the quote is "You can stand here and toss a ball around... or you can sit at your computer, and do something that matters"
@the_bombman

ahhh man oh well at least i was in the neighborhood

but hell yea world of warcraft is a damn good and entertaining game
@hilaryduffgta

But it's the end of the World...... of Warcraft.
If I send him gold, can I write it off as a campaign contribution?
@mnementh

Ummmmm how can you not be a wow fan????

Thats fine though go ahead and sit out side and throw the ball around or you can get up and do something in the world.......of warcraft

the internet for whoever gets that line (beyond easy)
@Brokenscope

Same here. I was quite shocked for a moment or two until I realized the hyphen was not a typo. I was all like, "why all the hate, O kung fu mastah?"
@gs68
Source please
yeah WarCrack!!!
Not a big WoW fan here, but that's pretty cool.
This is pretty cool.What Hal Halpin said about the number of politians also being gamers is starting to come true.Whats next,a president that has owned a Playstation.So he does not have a vote in the House of Representatives, but he still has the ability to particapate in other house activitys. The gamers finally have a voice to speak for them in the house.
He isn't an undead priest... but he is a priest so I can appreciate the effort it takes to get to 60 when your main job is to heal.
I work in Gov, but as a Tech. This makes me laugh. Really government guys are just like everyone else.. they just have better insurance. hehe

I think its great that he admits to it. Its better to be playing a game online than to be bored stupid getting into trouble.

Just my opinion on the matter.
Phantom said it. Support class on an RP server. Hott.
He's addicted to the Warcrack! HE'S GONE! =O

On a more serious note, it's funny that Jackie-chan said this some time ago:

"Adults with common sense and common decency who respect law enforcement are still running this country. Video gamers are not, and never will..."
A Dwarf support class on an RP server. He's a man after my own heart. :D

YOU SAY POLITICS AND POLITICIANS AND GAMES ARE ALIKE. YOUR RIGHT THEIR ARE BOTH IN A FANTASY. GAMES ARE SUPPOSE TO BE FUN, UNREAL, FUNNY AND ENJOYABLE, WHEREAS POLITICIANS WILL LAUGH WITH YOU AND AT YOU AFTER HE LIES HIS WAY INTO WHATEVER FIELD HE IS PLANNING TO PURSUE. HE'LL LOOK YOU RIGHT IN THE EYE AND LIE TO YOU AND HE'LL LAUGH AT YOU WHEN HE'S ALONE KNOWING FOOL WELL THAT YOU AND I ARE THE LITTLE PEOPLE COMPARED TO HIS DISPOSITION AND HIS PEDISTAL. IN HIS MIND WE ARE PIGMYS AND WHAT HE SAYS IS THE GOSBLE, ONLY PROBLEM THERE IS THE GOSBLE IS UP FOR AUCTION TO PAY OFF ALL THOSE DEBTS THOSE PREACHERS LOST IN COURT FOR MOLESTING ALL THEIR PERISHNERS CHILDREN., BUT THEIRS NO DIFFERENT THAN THE POLITOCIANS THAT ARE LIKE A GAME A FAKE, A FANTASY, A JOKE A POLITICIAN=ONE IN THE SAME.
Nice to see someone important playing a video game. It's about time someone pointed out how fun games are instead of spouting that they're the spawn of all evil in today's generation of children.
hey ray, id vote for ya anyday man. do i sense a gamer platform for president some day :P
"Wastes Your Money"
"Flagship Flip Flop"
"Keeping You Ignorant, One Filibuster At A Time"

What would be a good guild name for politicians?

>:-)
I think it's pretty fun to see older people play games like World of warcraft (or like Old Gandma Hardcore http://oghc.blogspot.com/), and if politicans play video & pc games, maybe they will understand more of the gamer community.

I have a friend whose 45 years old and plays WoW on a pvp server.

We need more older gamers today.

Normal folks play WoW, too. Not just the Uber-nerds, or Nerd-lings. But it does seem that there is an inordinate amount of idiots lately.

Anyway, Senators, actors, garbage-people, firemen, soldiers, lawyers, retail workers, I know at least one of each that plays. I don't like the idea of 'closet gamers' because I don't believe in such a thing. If you disrespect someone for gaming, then you aren't important in my life.

Why don't we make Guam a state so he gets a vote?
Well this story is a good one, gamers are from all walks of life (cough..tear). But, I think it's interesting that Paleray is not on the roster for the guild the article links to. Perhaps his superiors found out...
I think it's pretty awesome that a senator plays WoW. I go to school in a very conservative area and many of the people who live around my school believe that RP games in general are games of the devil and should be avoided. To have someone who can influence the overall feeling of RP games in such a position gives me hope that they won't be banned for some peoples' narrow-minded beliefs.

Maybe I can even talk my mother into playing with us...? (highly unlikely...)
@ hillaryduffgta

I'm just not a WOW player, that's all. Most MMORPGs don't do anything for me - not enough action. I'm an FPS gamer at heart. Hell, I was once ranked #6 in the world for 1 on 1 dueling in Starsiege: Tribes.

Damn, I miss that game.
I know this guy in game, i've played with him a lot. Hes really very nice and pretty smart. Knows his class well and plays well, both healer and dpser.
up until i saw this little report i had completely forgotten about his prpfession. He really is just a normal guy D=
Postat under kategorin Spelare | [...]
Criticising him for playing games because of his chosen profession is about as fair as legislating games so that anything rated for over 18 is banned...

it's frickin guam.
it's not like there's anything else to do.

boredom in rl or killing mindlessly on wow....
boredom or killing...

not really a tough decision there, folks.
[...] Your senator is probably an adulterous, lying, cheating piece of shit. But if you live on Guam, well, one of your senators is totally awesome. Sen. Ray Tenorio is a level 70 Dwarf Priest in WoW, whose name is Paleray, and who’s a member of the Knights of the Marianas on the Silverhand server. And before the dude got hooked on WoW, he was a badass Diablo II player, “where he had several top-level characters of various classes”. Taxpayer-funded level-grinding? We can only hope so. This guy played Diablo 2?

alright, I need to move to his state, and vote for him. that is just awesome.

also: the words "we need a healer" seem to pop up way to much, ever.

Sen. Ray Tenorio have my (write in) vote for presadent, for two reasons:
1) He's a gamer
2) He's from Guam
Wish all politicians played WOW. Then they would spend less time scheming to tax our property and deny our liberty.

And the libertarian leanings of WOW cannot be denied. You can take your weapons anywhere, you are not subject to taxes you dont want to pay - some guilds take a cut - and you can trade freely without government intervention. You are not even required to fight in the battles against your will (no draft).

Heck, Westfall even has (gasp - horrors!) .. a militia.
I think that the image of WoW players all being secluded gamer geeks is quickly going out the window, and this article about Mr. Tenorio is case in point.

Though certainly not as impressive as Mr. Tenorio, I have managed to juggle a family and a career as a plastic surgeon while leveling a 70 Undead Lock on the Frostwolf server. I have a couple of other surgeon buddies who play with me as well, and we are currently farming Kara while our guild is tackling Gruul's Lair, the Eye, and Serpentshrine.

Anyway, thanks to Mr Tenorio for taking the time to respond to this thread.

Closet Gamers: People who're afraid that what they're doing is a bad thing? Not sure, No closet here, just fun melting faces. I agree with Austin, of which we have one who is the leader of a guild called "The Valiant" on Silverhand. Bad or good is relative, just bring yourself to some bg's Doug and we'll see how squishy I am. Lol, have fun.

Ray
wow i was suprised to see this.....yet im still questioning wether this is bad or good but what the heck keep playing i need squishes to kill :) if ur up to the challenge :P
Greetigns Ray.
Nice to see a gamer in politics. Have fun tryin to counterbalance the kneejerk types who blame everything on games.
Wow, greetings, Senator! We could use a fear warding shadow priest in our raid guild if you ever want to swap over to Cenarian Circle.

Do you think there are a lot of "closet" gamers out there in government? At least at the state/territory level? And is there any sense of a stigma at "coming out" as a gamer? Like your fellow senators expecting you to break out the leet speech and teabag them during session?
Hey everyone. Paleray here. I thought your comments were fun and I thought I’d reply to some of them.

Yeah, I have time to do my job AND play Wow, it's cheaper and less time consuming than Golf and I think a lot more fun.

I don't play more than Nate but I have to admit it can be a challenge to walk away sometimes. Some believe gaming is the problem when, I think, it’s really a matter of ‘everything in moderation,’ remembering and following your priorities, and the real cause of the problem: lack of either self-control or parental control.

True: "Government guys are just like everyone else." And the more that is true of me the better I’ll be able to represent a great number of people of Guam.

I only WISH I got Xp by signing all the government documents while leveling to 70, oh well, and if you applied the gold in lieu of Xp, woot woot.

I agree with the sentiment "How can you not be a wow fan????" There’s no wonder on my part why there’s 9 Million players.

Finally, I'll gladly receive your gold and you can call it a campaign contribution, mana from Heaven, or just a gift any day. Wouldn't you?

Have fun all and thanks for your comments.

Ray Tenorio
Okay, can I say something about the post that "MICHAEL J. SCHMITZ" made?

Please use a dictionary the next time you even attempt to insult anyone. Caps lock makes you even more annoying.

Oh and my theory on this person? He's horde side on Silverhand and got his ass kicked by Paleray. Woot!
he looks more like a gnome mage to me. or any gnome.
I have to respect this man even though i don't do politics haha
Counter Strike...

Counter Strike...
i love this man for playing wow he healed me once!!!!!!!!1
lol you love him because he healed you 'once'?
I think i met him once
Thanks, Britni. I agree with you. I do remember toasting a few horde from time to time-but you've gotta respect them (horde...kinda like Democrats), they usually pwn us in bgs but I'm not too big into pvp.

I"m not sure if that's what motivated Schmitz, however I try to read beyond the words to get the real message. I will say this: I think some politicians are out of touch with the average man and what helps versus hurts all of us and if this is what you mean by they're living in fantasy, you'll find many that'll agree. Myself, I'll not laugh at you nor lie to you. I'm a gamer who happens to be a senator, but first I'm justa guy like many on this thread. I suspect you were badly burned by a politician and have a general disdain for them now, which I suppose is understandable but we can't all claim responsibility for bad politicians..but we can vote them out.

lol I was just checking to seeing how the thread ended but I see it really hasn't, yet. For those gaming in wow, my guild is still farming kara, gruuls, attempting ssc and the eye. Work is extraordinarily demanding lately so I'm missing runs but I'll see you guys on line. Btw, I leveled a mage (fire spec now) to 70 since the last article..coincidentally named "Senator." Good to see there are people with common sense and a sense of humor, even 'the1jeffy.'
Maybe Elliot Spitzer should have spent his money on WoW in stead of hookers?
[...] When you see a post about a politician being an avid World of Warcraft gamer, you just have to stop and read. Senator Tenorio of Guam, is a chairman on Criminal justice, public safety, youth and public affairs, but he is also into WoW and Diablo II. The post got me thinking about how we, as a society, blame our suffering on everything except for ourselves. [...]
He's not a healer priest; from his armors/weapon I see a shadow priest. Go senator!!
hey yall! i wont to buy a 70
