Chinese Jack Thompson?

August 14, 2007
Combining a high profile and highly negative claims about the effects of video games on teenagers, Tao Hongkai just might be the Jack Thompson of China.

The 61-year-old professor at Huazhong Normal University asserts, for example, that a person of average IQ will experience a 10% loss after three years of heavy online gaming, effectively becoming sub-normal, according to Pacific Epoch.

Tao was also quoted recently in the Shanghai Daily, claiming that 70% of China's juvenile crime could be traced to Internet addiction. Said Tao:
[Online gaming providers] are bringing calamity to the country and the people, but some of them end up being held up as outstanding enterprises!

It is a colossal mistake for a few officials from some departments to lend their support to the development of Internet games.

The newspaper eagerly took up Tao's crusade, editorializing:
80 percent of online video games have violent, pornographic, or fraudulent elements... Why does not the government deal with such companies as it does with, say, heroin providers?

...Unless these providers are out of their businesses, we should probably be prepared for more tales of studies, careers, marriages and lives being ruined by the games...

I thnik he drew the numbers out of thin air. 70% of all crime can be traced to internet addiction? Yeah sure, i highly doubt 70% of all criminals have internet accsess let alone enough to become addicted (after all there are limits to how long you can be on the internet at a library). Didn't China already set a limit on hoe you can game on the internet per day? Could the great firewall of china be effecting internet gaming there? I hope he is not taken seriously.

@Father Time

You just dealt with the dog, bitch.

gah why did it post it twice? I only modified the post to escape being flagged.

Shouldn't really be surprised.

Thompson and the Chinese Commies both wish to take away freedom for the "good of the people"

"Why does not the government deal with such companies as it does with, say, heroin providers?"

Oh! I'll field this one Mr. Chinese Thompson. You see heroin has a direct causality between its usage and the physical harm done to the human body. As where video games have only been shown to have a weak correlation between them and violence.

Any more questions?

But seriously, I wonder how much he makes for sitting on his ass and making up percentages?

Sorry JT. All your posts have been deleted along with every one else.

I did? Is that why my mouth is foaming? I thought it was just sweat.

Yep, that sounds like JT all right, I think it must be his cousin or something.

I call upon the powers of the internet to grant this man the nickname of Bootleg Thompson, since the Chinese are fairly good a bootlegging. In fact, with the crap this guy is spewing, I would say he is an upgrade. JT 2.0 is his new name!

I welcome this man to the party. (Not the Communist party, that party is lame and the music sucks.) I am sure that he will most likely be taken seriously by the government there. I hope my Chinese counterpart can battle him on www.gameporitics.net just as much as I battle the origional version here.

At least if this guy gets disbarred he'll take it in stride and kill himself. If only Jack Thompson had that kind of dedication.

I don't know about him being a chinese version of jack thompson, his (and I mean the chinese guy's) arguments are much much more easier to shoot down, observe.

He says that 70% of all juvenille crime comes from online game ADDICTION. Well that doesn't make much sense, first off if they are addicted to the games why are they out commiting crimes instead of being inside feeding their addiction? True some addictions cause people to comitt crimes, but that's only when the addiction is costly or illegal. Game addiction is neither, since you only pay $X per month regardless of how much you play. Well electricity bills might become a problem but it seems highly unlikely that they will shoot high enough to warrant criminal activities. Moreover as we all know people addcited to online gaming sometimes become social outcasts, severly reducing the chances that they will go out and commit crimes.

Don't even get me started on child sweatshops as a greater factor for crime than online game addiction.

Father Time, Most people in China don't have home internet access. They'd be going to internet cafes, which charge by the hour, I believe. Still, though it is not expensive by local standards.

The IQ drop things should be pretty easy to study, though granted not in a controlled setting so you wouldn't know if it was the games or the personality type that causes people to like games causing the IQ drop, but having people take an IQ test, fill out weekly surveys about video games, then take another one in three years should be fairly easy.

This is forgetting of course, that most folks don't really consider IQ a good measure of intelligence anymore. Which begs the question as to what part of his ass he got his IQ figures from on MMO's since the two concepts are practically from different time periods.

What the hell is it with the Chinese, and making cheap knockoffs of everything around them, including the infamous Jack Thompson?
(I'm Chinese by blood, fyi)

Tao Hongkai should know all about the decadence and corruption gaming can bring. After all, doesn't his homeland harbor majority the world's WoW gold farmers?

@Twin-Skies
It's a fledgling industry. Same with shit you wouldn't even think people play, like Lineage 2.

Looks like Tao's been covering this topics for quite some time now. Joystiq's apparently covered his group's movement before:

http://www.joystiq.com/2004/11/01/internet-addiction-plagues-chinas-youth/

Well, the 70% figure is probably accurate, if you include using open proxies to bypass Chinese censorship. And it's a somewhat reasonable twisting of logic to say that anyone willing to circumvent the good of the State for games must be addicted.

"Why does not the government deal with such companies as it does with, say, heroin providers?" - I say that Chinese government would do better to deal with those who spread lies and hatred towards gamers in the same way German government deals with those who spread lies and hatred towards Jews.

Isn't Gold Farming on WoW kind of a business for China?
So according to him being a gamer is making a person a criminal, well in China thinking for yourself can make you a criminal and being a gamer makes you very free thinking so anyone else see a correlation there.
Oh and this guy is not Jack "Bloody" Thompson hes a guy trying to gain brownie points with China's communist government and attempting to drum up a witch hunt.

where exactly is this "data" coming from?'

I've been playing games since I was four years old (

This is not my idol Jack Thompson at all! There was no funny, or highly supported facts in his statement at all!

"80% of games contain pornographic material"

riiiiggghhht...

Actually... they do..

For instance, Madden 08 has pornographic material for China. I mean you kick around Balls and in bubble bobble you connect a large ammont of balls together.

Any game that has a female main character would probally be porn for them as well.

Plus anything that a long slender shape.

And since war is nothing more then the battle of penises and balls, any war game would be pornographic. (No im serious, look at the shape of space ships, missles and the like. Course you do have to have a bit dirty mind)

And boom, i bet throwing together with some more dumbass logic, we can get them to be 80% pornographic.

if the guy wants to say that these companies should run out bidness, then let shut down the their movie industry and their gameing companies. that way every body can have a smile on there face and be super intellengent.

IQ also drops when you have the fear that someone can confuse cartoon characters with real people.

What is going on, I come to this site to both get a kick out of the arguements with Jack Thompson and also here everyone's opinion. I did not see people go to the extreme on calling each other names and that sort of thing so I do not want to see all of this deletion. Gamepolitics please do not make this site boring so I will keep coming to check out the website. Until this deletion happened I was really enjoying the website. Gamepolitics please reply and tell me what is going on.

@Michael

GP didn't delete anything, the spam filter went berserk and deleted all comments.

He's the Chinese version of Jack Thompson's shadow, but he is not Jack Thompson. Not even close.

"claiming that 70% of China’s juvenile crime could be traced to Internet addiction."

Sounds a lot like drug war propaganda to me...

73% of percentile statistics are pulled out of thin air.

I wouldn't trust any statistics coming out of China. The level of government control and propaganda gives "respectable sources" the credibility of an article in the National Inquirer. In America, at least lies have to sound somewhat credible to the average idiot.

I agree. Taking moral tips and cultural advice from the Chinese government is like taking military training and strategic intel from France.

@Thack Jompson: thanks, you're too sweet... but I don't think French Foreign Legion and GIGN are that bad at military training.

By the way, I found a quite old article (march 2000) by Wan Lixin, the author of the Shangai Daily's game-bashing article quoted above. You can go read it here : http://app1.chinadaily.com.cn/star/history/00-03-28/l03-deal.html

Excerpt :

"[Ding Yongling, a 47-year-old woman prosecutor from Changning District Procuratorate] also linked the rising incidence of crimes committed by minors to the explosion of video game arcades and the pursuit of fashion.

'Many children turn to crime after becoming addicted to video games,' she said."

*sigh*...

How retarded. If you look hard enough u can trace crimes back to nearly anything. These people, for some reason, have a vendetta against games and are looking for negative evidence on games where there is none.

Sexy cam babes, free live chat...

...

Just what the World needs another Jack Thompson jeez I bet noone takes this "professor guy" seriously.
