Tivo Alert: Court TV Looks at Video Game Legislation

Tivo Alert: Court TV Looks at Video Game Legislation

August 23, 2007
Fire up the Tivo!

Court TV's Star Jones will examine video game violence and video game legislation at 3:00 P.M. Eastern Time today.

UPDATE: GP has learned that California State Senator Leland Yee will be on the program. Yee, of course, was the architect of his state's 2005 video game law which was recently declared unconstitutional by a federal court judge.

We understand that Katherine Fallow, an attorney who has helped defend the video game industry against legislation, will be on as well.

Not appearing: Jack Thompson, who writes in a comment to this GP article:
I was scheduled last night and this morning to be on this Starr Jones segment. I am now not going to be on. Want to know why?  ...the video game industry people are afraid to go on the air with me.

ECA president Hal Halpin told GamePolitics he would have been pleased to provide counterpoint to Thompson's view, but is flying to PAX this weekend.

Thompson, coincidentally, nixed an opportunity to debate Hal at PAX...

Star Jones has a job?
She knows law? 0-o
Sorry.. I can't think of anything witty to add, after Zigs and Zippy.
Could there be anyone more unqualified to do this?
I don't know what to say. Are we supposed to be honored to have this topic on a show featuring a failed singer/actress?

Is that how things work these days. You no longer want to work in entertainment so you move to law and politics?
Is it on CNN Newsroom?
@Zachary

She was a lawyer who became a legal analyst who was then hired for the View who then became a "celebrity train wreck" who then became a legal analyst again.
@ GamerDad

Ah. I get it now.
So where does she go after that? Prostitution?
ALA TechSource, in collaboration with the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL), held the first annual Gaming, Learning, and Libraries Symposium, July 22-24, 2007, in Chicago. Top gamers, librarians, and others discussed how gaming impacts our nation’s libraries.

Participating in the symposium were Judith Krug, Office for Intellectual Freedom Director, and Katherine Fallow, a partner in Jenner & Block. The presentation, What IF: Gaming, Intellectual Freedom and the Law is available as an MP3 audio file.

Sorry misread it as CNN. I have my DVR set to record it since I"ll be at work. Have something to look forward to when I get home tonight. ^_^
She's creepy X.x

Hopefully she'll have some intelligent input on the subject. I fear she may flock with other limelight-loving, ambulence chasing, clueless "legal experts" we all know and loathe.
At this rate she is well on her way to being the next Nancy Grace. All she has to do is get a boyfriend/husband murdered and whore it up for the camera. Oh, and berate her guests into suicide. Well on her way none the less.
"GP has learned that California State Senator Leland Yee will be on the program."

I predict Yee's comments will be something along the lines of "I'm disappointed that the court didn't side with me, hopefully the Supreme Court will agree to overlook the unconstitutionality of my bill. It's for the children afterall."
@ Zigs

I have very little respect for Senator Yee and his stubbourn refusal to accept that his way is not the best to ensure kids do not have access to inappropriate media, but I have even less respect for someone who would use a racist remark like that.

I can agree with people who would berate him for his policies, his actions and his statements in the past, but to insult him because of his ethnicity? If I were moderating this site I would ban you. In making a comment like that, you conform exactly to the stereotype that the anti-gaming brigade has created, an aggressive, hateful, immature person.
Oh, lighten up.
why do we always get these Tivo Alerts the morning of the show? By then we are all at work and can't fire up jack squat, much less the tivo.
I was scheduled last night and this morning to be on this Starr Jones segment. I am now not going to be on. Want to know why? Dennis, you can call me, and I will play the producer's voice mail for you. Better yet, call Beth at 212-973-xxxx, and she will tell you that the video game industry people are afraid to go on the air with me.

So, the great, self-righteous defenders of freedom of expression, of the marketplace of ideas, and who also say that I am a joke and having nothing to say are such sissy cowards that they won't go on a cable news program because they are frightened out of their sorry wits that they can't stand up to the facts of this issue.

If I were the "retard" that they say I am, they would die to be on the air with me to make a monkey of me.

I've been on the Today show eight times and 60 Minutes twice for a reason. I know what I'm talking about, and the industry is scared to death of me. They should be. Hooah!
@Shoehorn O'Plenty

How exactly is calling Leland Yee's mother a whore and father JT racist? Offensive, and this is definitely isn't the place for such insults, but I wouldn't call it racist.
@Shoehorn O'Plenty
I don't think it's that racist, I'm sure many other sites of mainly other ethnicites have made crack-comments like that for white people (or Americans). Plus, it's not like Zigs meant it..
o, and what Gray17 said
This should provide a few worthwhile quotations, i think.
"she will tell you that the video game industry people are afraid to go on the air with me."

Star Jones and Leland Yee sure are industry people all right.
Great way to stop kids from playing games. Make them in china and put tons of lead paint on them. Recall them the next week.
I understand that there will also be an attorney who has represented the game industry against game legislation, so that may be what he is referring to
@ Jack Thompson

I think the reason people from the game industry don't want to be on the show with you is the fact that if you were, they would never get a chance to speak. You would interupt them after the second word and go off on a ten minute speal of your "credentials" and you 60 Minutes interview.

They would rather be on the show with someone who will let them voice their side of the issue.
The problem I had with the statement is that he was using the same tactics as Jack Thompson, attack the person, not their message, opinion or deeds.

Remember when Thompson described Rockstar employees as "Scottish sociopaths"? What does their being scottish have to do with their work? I have said in the past that he is stupid for believing that video games make people into killers, and that he is ignorant for refusing to accept other's point of view. What if I said he was stupid and ignorant because he was an American? Or becuase he was white?

I probably am overreacting a little, but I still think it's idiotic to bring a person's ethnicity into a debate regarding a television appearance they will make and their previous actions against video games. It adds nothing to it.

@ Jack Thompson:

"So, the great, self-righteous defenders of freedom of expression, of the marketplace of ideas, and who also say that I am a joke and having nothing to say are such sissy cowards that they won’t go on a cable news program because they are frightened out of their sorry wits that they can’t stand up to the facts of this issue."

So when your psychologist said "He said that he realizes that he may have offended some with his ad hominem writings, and he will be more moderate in his writing style in the future.", this is the result? Seems like you kept quiet long enough for them to perceive you as reasonable, then when you had your positive report you went straight back to being the rude, deluded person we are so familiar with.
I got a real good feeling that the thing they "fear" with putting JT on the air is getting shitty ratings for the show.

And JT, even Fred Phelps and Michael Crook have been on major shows like that. Who are they? Look them up...see where you rank.
@ Jack Thompson

I agree with Zachary here.

You see Jack, the reason why most people don't like you, is not because of your views...its because your an asshole. You supply some decent facts from time to time, but they are instantly forgotten because soon after you post them, you fling an insult.

Why on earth would the industry want to go on t.v. with someone like that? Its like debating with a child. Because once the debate gets good, you start pitching hissy fits and calling people names.

You just have a real unorthodox way of portraying your views.

I mean Janet Reno? Wtf? Or Penny-Arcade? Gabe and Tycho owned your ass with that check they wrote...and you know it. And you only have yourself to blame for that one.
Its pretty hard to debate with someone who has a history of lying and "stretching" the truth, but can speak with such conviction that people take what you are saying at face value. I'll give Jack credit in that he can be a very charismatic individual and be respectable when he wants to be. Its probably the only thing that has saved his career.
@Zigs... your comments are over the top, today, my friend. See our comments policy.

I would prefer not to wield the ban stick, so please adjust accordingly.

Sen. Yee, by the way, is an American citizen - and I don't believe that I can ever recall any cooperation between Yee and Jack Thompson.

seriously its COURT tv that means they want REAL lawyers (the hosts aside)
[...] Tivo Alert: Court TV Looks at Video Game Legislation [...]
Spoke to Hal Halpin about this. He said he would have been glad to appear against Jack on Court TV but is flying to PAX this afternoon.

He also reminds me that Jack was offered a chance to debate Hal at PAX this weekend but declined...
Hmmmm watch this or food network?????

meh what the hell i'll check it out
for the record my early post was a jab at nancy grace not star jones (in all fairness i plan to wait till i see the debate to say anything about her work )

just felt the need to clarify
@ Cullarn

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
If I were the “retard” that they say I am, they would die to be on the air with me to make a monkey of me.

I’ve been on the Today show eight times and 60 Minutes twice

man it doesn get any better than this, certainly says alot bout these shows
It's obvious than any show willing to have a clown like Thompson in it is not interested in any real debate and is not worth anyone's time. People who actually get things done have better things to do than getting out of their way to debate a retard. Of course I wouldn't expect someone who sees a massacre as just another opportunity to get his face on TV to be able to even comprehend something like that.
You know what thompson? I call bullshit on your supposed "reason". My 2 year old nephew can blow holes through your supposed truths and theories. If anyone is afraid, especially since there will be someone who has helped defend the game industry against these tax wastes will be on the show, it is you, sera.
"I was scheduled last night and this morning to be on this Starr Jones segment. I am now not going to be on. Want to know why? …the video game industry people are afraid to go on the air with me."

OMFG! Court TV has surfed the internets!
I don't doubt that Game industry people refuse to share air time with Thompson. Buzz Aldrin won't share air time with people like Bart Sibrel but that doesn't make Buzz afraid, just smart. There isn't a shortage of people making the claim but there is a limited number of people who the claim can be made against.
"I am now not going to be on. Want to know why? …the video game industry people are afraid to go on the air with me."

It doesn't bother you that CourtTV cares more about the VG industry than about your presence during the show? No ranting about a conspiracy to keep you silent?

I'm disappointed.
I wonder if Jack's mad that Yee gets to debate the VG industry, but he doesn't? Or does he feel that Yee is incapable of bringing up the appropriate "mental masturbation" quotes at just the right time during the debate?
jt was scheduled until they had the interns hit westlaw and researched his cases then they dropped him like a biohazard container
Dennis, as much as I dont want to put you through the trauma, it would be good if you rang jack and got that voicemail so we could get a transcript.
Who cares? This will be another pointless debate where nothing gets solved.
I second chris' request. I'm also curious to know the real, un-spinned reason why Thompson is not appearing.
Jack is just like Free Waterfall Jr. on the Futurama episode "The Problem With Popplers": always muttering 'Shut up' or, in Jack's case, 'Uh' when other people are speaking.
Did GP redact that phone number?

 GP: yes, I don't want phone numbers for 3rd parties posted here...
Damn, if only jack had agreed to PAX, that would be one amazing debate to see....
I don't think any debate with Jack would be amazing. I think it would be one sided and unless they filled the room with anti-game activist Jack wouldn't have much of a positive reply from the audience(if there is one). I personally think Hal Halpin could debate Leland Yee and Jack Thompson at the same time and it would be rather one-sided. The side of truth, justice and freedom will win in the long run. Anti-game activist are destined to failure. But of course when their failure arrives is reliant upon our actions.
TIme to decode JT's bullshit yet again.

I was scheduled last night and this morning to be on this Starr Jones segment. I am now not going to be on. Want to know why? Dennis, you can call me, and I will play the producer’s voice mail for you. Better yet, call Beth at 212-973-xxxx, and she will tell you that the video game industry people are afraid to go on the air with me.

I’ve been on the Today show eight times and 60 Minutes twice for a reason. I know what I’m talking about, and the industry is scared to death of me. They should be. Hooah!

Starr Jones segments are, of course, great ways to get reliable information. And by the way, what do you call your segment with Adam Sessler? The industrty kicking your ass up and down the interweb.

2.So, the great, self-righteous defenders of freedom of expression, of the marketplace of ideas, and who also say that I am a joke and having nothing to say are such sissy cowards that they won’t go on a cable news program because they are frightened out of their sorry wits that they can’t stand up to the facts of this issue.

Oh my, such Ad Hominem. To start off with, every time that you have been challenged, you ahve backed out for some bullshit reason or another.

3.If I were the “retard” that they say I am, they would die to be on the air with me to make a monkey of me.

I’ve been on the Today show eight times and 60 Minutes twice for a reason. I know what I’m talking about, and the industry is scared to death of me. They should be. Hooah!

They would die to be on the air to show the world what a joke you are; sadly, you weasel out of debates like a snake out of a cage. You've been on Today show eight times and 60 minutes twice, and each time you made up the same bullshit, none of which is backed up with any fact, only your supposition.

SO, MR JACK THOMPSON, I, AUSTIN LEWIS, CHALLENGE YOU TO A DEBATE ON ANY SHOW OF YOUR CHOOSING AT ANY DATE. LET'S GO.

Or are you so afraid of us you won't even debate a 20 year old college student?
I wish the FSM would touch JT with his noodly apendage and make his mouth (and hands, and any other form of communication) would become useless. RAmen.

Those "sissies" have kicked your ass in court time and time again. So I guess that makes you the sissy's bitch.
Why, why must we be constantly reminded of what Jack Thompson is thinking? We don't care! He's becoming the Paris Hilton of the Gaming world - given attention just because he's there, not because he's doing anything worthwhile.

To you, Mr. Thompson, I would love to prove you wrong on the air, if only I could find a show.
Also with the continued usage of "hooah" Jack Thompson once again proves that he does not respect our armed forces that protect his sorry ass' freedom to spew verbal sewage.
jack its because nobody likes you. i also seriously doubt "Dr." Phil called you either.
watching now, "Star" just claimed she was going to get to the bottom of this ....

umm yeah.... riiiiiight

I can barely stand watching this show, oy. its "E-News" for CourtTV

yuck
Hearing Star Jones Opening, I already know where this is headed. I hope the attorney for the game industry is ready to be villified.
After his last couple of appearances in the wake of the VA-Tech massacre and how he conducted himself - and after the royal ass-handing Chris Matthews gave him - I had a feeling that most major news programs would think twice about having him on their shows once they realized what an unprofessional asshole he was. Looks like I was right.

The news programs do believe you have nothing to say, Jack. They're just being nice in not telling you. Yee is just as thickheaded as you, but the reason why he's being allowed on and you're not is because unlike you he can keep a civil tongue in his head.

BTW, there's something else on CNN tonight Dennis that you might also be interested in. It's part of a 3 part series hosted by Christiane Amanpour entitled "God's Warriors." Tonight's segment focuses on the Evangelical Christians with part of it dealing with the so-called "Culture War."

One segment deals with a movement called Battle Cry; an organization of teens who are opposed to popular entertainment and are being encourged by their leader Ron Luce to reject and protest against violence in popular entertainment including TV, movies, music...and video games.

They show footage of one of their rallies. It's like freakin' Nuremberg in Triumph of the Will. It freaked the hell out of me. This was exactly the kind of brainwashing and indoctrination I was referring to, only on a much grander scale. Ladies and gentlemen, here is the next generation of Jack Thompsons.

Here's a link to the website. Take a look at the video for "The Culture War" under Christianity.

http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2007/gods.warriors/

Also here's a link to the Wikipedia article for Battle Cry

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_Cry_Campaign

I think we ought to keep an eye on this Ron Luce guy. He seems more charismatic and influential than JT could ever hope to be.
Yeah, good luck getting Jack to debate anyone; I challenged him to a charity debate over a year ago and promised to destroy my entire gaming collection if he bested me; and he backed out as the coward he is. For the record, said gaming collection can be seen here:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/Viscter/dcp_3642.jpg

So I did the next best thing; I had him autograph a copy of his book and destroyed it for charity. It pissed him off quite a bit, so it was an extra bonus.

As it happens, my offer still stands; if you want to get on tv again so bad feel free to try and reshedule your appearance, I'll be happy to counter every claim you make point after point myself. If you think you know more than everyone in the industry, a regular ol' gamer should be no problem for you - unless you're the coward we all know you to be.
I think we ought to keep an eye on this Ron Luce guy. He seems more charismatic and influential than JT could ever hope to be.

they always start out that way cause no ones really watching give him some time . . .
Right...I'm going to go ahead and just guess that they didn't want you on because you bring nothing constructive to the table. The potential for debate has existed countless times, but honestly, who wants to see an argument between someone with a brain and an attorney who relies on ad hominem attacks because he lacks the common sense to provide any evidence to support his irrational claims?

And, as a member of the Armed Forces, I find that your use of "Hooah" to be completely outrageous. Please stop disgracing the military with your comments, and, if you must, at least take up a new "war cry." Self-serving people such as yourself need not shout a phrase that so many others use as a symbol of camaraderie.
Oy...Watching this now. it's painful to watch. And it seems like it'll be the last thing they talk about..gonna have to sit through this entire crappy show.
Uhh...does anyone else think it's appropriate that Jack's new tagline, "hooah!" was taken from a blind man?
@ Capgun

I know what you mean. It looks like it might only be a 5 minute segment just so that she can spend the entire show on Hollywood gossip. What do you think are the chances that Yee will get 4 of those 5 minutes and that the attorney will only be able to get in a 1 sentence blurb?
Quite high. Sounds like they're doing it after this commercial break...I do not like the sound of it..
Damn. I knew it. They brought up Columbine.
Now that's a low blow...
this show is not getting to the bottom of ANYTHING

I will do as the guest is suggesting and think about what media I will expose myself to...

CLICK!
I'd say it went very well. She made her opinions quite clear, but she gave both sides fair time.
I LOVE the video game industry's lawyer!! Damn straight that there are parental controls! She's been saying we all have been saying here.

Jones, a little biased to the other side, but I think she was faily objective. Let the parents work things out and the likes. She concluded with a "middle-ground" sort of things.
Well that was a waste of 45 minutes. It did go a bit longer then I expected though. Was nice that Jones wasnt COMPLETELY on the BANIT side. Didnt really get anywhere though
Wish I could have seen it, but at least I can close the italics tag.
Am I the only one who found Ms. Fallow to be quite the looker?
I've gotta say I'm dissappointed. They're bandying about the same old arguments about how games may and/or may not be bad for the children. They brought in the Columbine survivor for sheer emotional shock value and nothing else. It's slightly more balanced than I expected, but it's reaching out towards the people who may not actually know anything about the debate itself.

All in all, I think it's unbalanced when presented to the mainstream viewer for the sheer fact that Columbine is still a fresh wound in many peoples minds. No casual viewer is going to walk away without a bias.
Ok, I didn't turn it off and Ms. Jones credit, she did end the segment by saying parents have ALL the power.

I'm sorry for any Californians out there who are having thier tax dollars used in such a negligent way for a cause that is so superfluous.
Well, I was worried at first but I thought it was well played. Both sides had an equal share and rather than play to public fear, she said the same thing we've always said: Parents need to be Parents. The Columbine thing wasn't necessary but still helped to remind everyone of what started the video game legislation movement.
I hate when they constantly bring Columbine into the fray. Was what Craig Scott (the columbine guy, i think that was his name) said about Harris being hit in the nose by the gun true. Not the part about bringing him back to reality, but the fact that he was hit, because this is the first I've heard about that argument.
I wish I could earmark my tax dollars as "Pays for anything but Yee's stupid bill"

I really think a Judge needs to rule that the politicians themselves need to pay for this, out of their own pocket, and can't touch any tax money.
I'm glad she gave it some time to flesh out the argument. However the Columbine thing was an extremely low blow. The lawyer for the game industry was good and I think there were a few times that she got Yee floundering. I see why if thompson chickened out if he was really invited. She would have ripped him a new one debate wise.
Mr. Thompson... they're not scared of you. You don't 'debate.' You just preach your theories and whine when someone gets to talk for more than five seconds. And you back out of other, perfectly reasonable, debates for no particular reason. YOU'RE the one that's scared here, not 'the industry,' which, somehow, you're adding Court TV as a part of in the context of this article.
Since JT has free time now that no one wants to talk with his sorry ass maybe he can head over to PAX and try to debate with Hal like he should have before he pusillanimously chickened out. JT is more gutless than a frenchman in a foxhole.
"Starr Jones segments are, of course, great ways to get reliable information. And by the way, what do you call your segment with Adam Sessler? The industrty kicking your ass up and down the interweb"

Lmao God i loved that debate right there...adam pwned his ass like there was nothing to it..i would love to see jacky boy get pwned by both morgan and adam though now that would be awesome

go away jack no one wants you here
@Greg:

No wonder Thompson declined, he wouldn't get 100% of the airtime like he would on say FOX news or CNN.
@ deathnote

I'm not sure, but what I didn't like is when he described that, to me he made it sound like it was the first time Harris held a gun. There is video proof that they practiced with the guns they used in the mountains.
Why does Jack come here? What is really going on? He must know that he's not going to convert us. He's not advancing his cause any, and he has to know that. Like preaching anti-semitism in a jewish neighborhood. Yet he clearly has GP bookmarked. Why? It's not like he needed Dennis to tell him about the court TV segment. Was he wanting to gloat? Wouldn't it make more sense to gloat opposite the people he thinks were afraid to face him? Is he seeking some kind of acceptance/validation from us? Some kind of concession from us? Are we supposed to have epiphanies and admit that because he wasn't on court TV, he must be right? (snort)

I'm really beginning to wonder, yes, I know violence in the public media is supposed to be his official agenda, but has anyone ever heard of him pursuing any other kind of media since he got cop-killer busted down in the 80's? The real irony is 2K did more actual fiscal damage to themselves adding SecuROM to Bioshock then he's done in years.
That went well. Star did a rather impressive job of moderating, even pointing out to Yee how she likes to balance the sides when she starts to feel that the bias is going too far one way. Also, her best points as far as I'm concerned are that she first pointed out how as a lawyer she's not in support of running afowl of the first amendment while at the same time wanting senators to do everything they can to restrict sales (though she did clearly imply that it can't be done), and she pointed out how the link argued by Yee was correlative as opposed causal and Yee even agreed that it was correlative. Now if only it were prime-time TV as opposed to daytime...

As for Yee, though I don't agree with many of his points, he was very respectful and let the host control the show. He kept the hyperbole to a minimum, and had a very respectful tone and didn't try to shout over Star or the industry lawyer. What I didn't like is his assertion that when you're playing a video game, the button presses are somehow "literally" the same as murdering someone or (Yee's words) "urinating on women." Also, he said that Judge Ron White said in his ruling that the state has an interest in regulating games, so he sees that as carte blanche to try again. I disagree with this myself as 8 other judges have not said such a thing. I will, however, give him credit for only mentioning being a child psychiatrist once, and very quickly towards the end and not shoving credentials/show appearances down our throat.

The industry lawyer could've been better, but she did a fair job of arguing the legal side of things. Star opened talking with her by mentioning the 8-0 winning streak that the industry had, and then when the industry lawyer corrected her by pointing out that it's now 9-0 with the California ruling, Star was receptive of the correction and even laughed about it a bit. The single best part about the industry lawyer's bit, and possibly the entire debate, was that although Star and Yee said that there aren't tools in the consoles themselves for parents to limit what games kids can play, the industry lawyer pointed out how all the new consoles have parental controls that allow parents to set passwords.

That was actually a very good debate despite opening with a Columbine survivor (for the heartstrings, I would assume) arguing for government regulation of violent media. I will at least commend him for not restricting it to video games despite that being what the debate was about, but other than that, no comment.
@ deathnote

While this is the first time i'd ever heard about that, I wouldn't be so suprised if its true. Those two were already messed up and the kickback could have "knocked" some sense into him. Then again, had those parents "knocked" some sense into them to begin with, we'd probably never be having this discussion right now. Remember parents, beat your kids.
Its been said before but.. yeah. Somehow I doubt that the industry is scared to debate you on air Jack. Your the one that keeps ducking out of any sort of debate with a prepared or knowledgable opponent.

Although reading about how it went, I kind wish Jack was there. Because we all know how bad a job Jack does behaving and it would have been nice to see him getting reprimanded or even storming off from the debate.

Sounds like they coulda picked someone better to represent the industry tho.
Almost forgot one thing.

There was point where Star could tell Yee was becoming agitated that she kept interrupting him when he was talking about regulation, and she clarified by saying that no one disagrees that there should be regulation, but that she's asking who should have the regulation power.

Also, I forgot the industry lawyer's name and also the name of the Columbine survivor. I have a much easier time remembering faces, not names.
Yes Thompson they fear you. They fear your ignorance
The only real way to hold an honest debate is to use debating rules. That means there is no interrupting or open discussion of argument during the debate. However, this is typically a yawnfest, no matter how informative. A clean debate would be best done at a college, university, or gamecon, and reported on afterwards w/transcript.
Does it surprise anyone that Jack Thompson, at the drop of a hat, can recite off all of the times that he's been on television? I mean, perhaps I'm the only one in finding this odd? I can't of a single other "public figure", for lack of a more fitting term, that can do that. I'm surprised that he has yet to see how absolutely transparent his arrogance and egocentrism truly is, with acts such as this.

Additionally, if no one's noticed, he never responds to users, he simply trolls and hopes to god that people read what he writes. I doubt that he would even take the time to read any of the legitimate comments written on this board, primarily due to the fact that he most likely is too busy bashing Dennis and calling game industry figure cowards.

What I don't understand, really, is the attack on individuals' character. There are plenty of people who are opposed to video game violence who go about it in a somewhat professional manner. Actually citing evidence, not jumping on TV at the first chance that one gets, not demeaning other peoples' character. Jack Thompson has taken the art of debate and argumentation back to pre-kindergarten levels. It's not the evidence, it's not the students who shoot up schools, it's not those dying. It's how much crap he can get his hands on to fling at other people.
@Corbin

Agreed. I've been trying to figure out what his gameplan is, but I'm beginning to suspect he doesn't have one at all. He's just trying to prop himself because the people around here react to him so violently. Probably helps his self-esteem. Court TV didn't keep him off the air because they were afraid of him, they kept him off the air because they wanted to have a serious discussion.
How come people who are denied speaking always say "They're afraid of what I'll say." It could be true, or it could be political fluff to make themselves sound more important.
John Bruce Thompson is too busy chasing massacres to ever have time to debate anyone intelligently.

As for Leland Yee-he just is a supporter of the uber-liberal "nanny state" concept, and you have to consider that every time you read about him...he'll try again if the opportunity arises, that much is true.
Hell I'd be afraid to be in the same room as Jack, cause somewhere in the middle of the debate he would snap and start trying to kill me.
@Picho

Totally. It would simultaneously be sad and incredibly ironic if JT snapped and shot up a gamestop somewhere.
critic: I can see it happening. He desperately wants to be feared, and reminds me of those skinny kids from middle school who were obsessed with serial killers and making stupid "scary" comments. I also remember him making a "stone cold killa" style death threat against anybody who would try to burgle his home during an interview years back.

If his house had a basement he'd be living in it.
I don't think it is that the game industry fears Thompson, it's that they don't want to legitimize his views.

I understand the thinking there, but I see it as a mistake. The guy gets on TV with or without the industry acknowledging his existence. Better to engage, IMO...
@Jack Thompson, Attorney

You do your best to talk over people, interrupt, plug your fire tinder book, insult anyone who isn't on your side.... I think the question would be, who does want to interview with you? No one. Not out of fear, but because you're a pompous jerk.
But what I want to know is if Jack in his own words "Knows what he is talking about", wouldn't here be an excellent place to prove that? Unless by "knows what he is talking about" he means the same sorry arguments that we've shot down over and over again that he has not bothered to ever defend, well then he doesn't know what he is talking about.

This is a typical Thompson "debate" here.

Jack "The Sky is Green"

Posters: "Actually no its not. Here are photos from weather.com of the sky being blue and a link to wikipedia giving a scientific explanation to just why the sky is blue. Also here is mention of "wild blue yonder"

Jack: "I was on CNN, and I said the sky is green."

Posters: "What about all that shit we just mentioned that totally shoots down everything you say?"

Jack: "I wrote a letter to Hillary on the Greenness of the sky."

Posters: "Yeah, thats nice. But about everything that says your wrong."

Jack: "The meteorological society is afraid of me, because I know of the green."

Posters: "Fuck you."
After taking that in, check out that "God's Warriors" special on CNN tonight and watch for this guy Ron Luce who's the head of Battle Cry and indoctrinating the next generation of anti-gamers with his Nuremberg-style youth rallies. If that doesn't skeeve you out I don't know what will.
Halfway through it and she hasn't gotten to it yet.
yu passed up the chance to debate with hal but
seemz to eagr to prove that yu ar better than us?
The mind of Jack:

Argue with gamers on a website? Hell yes!

Debate with Hal on TV? Ooooh...thats a little too much for me...
It was better than I expected, but still not that great.
I notice Jack's not on here crowing about how his hearing went this morning (you know, the one where he said he'd demand that the Court declare the Bar rules prohibiting criticism of judges to be unconstitutional)--I'm wondering if things didn't go his way...

GP: Mark, I don't know all of the details, but he's filed a notice that he now intends to add 30+ people as defendants. Basically all of the FL Bar hierarchy and anyone was served as a governor since 2004. That plus the fact that he is now requesting mediation and that he's not crowing about it tells me it didn't go his way...

Never heard of this show in my life.
"I’ve been on the Today show eight times and 60 Minutes twice for a reason."

Because you are volatile, aggressive, and able to attract ratings because of the controversies surrounding you?

"I know what I’m talking about, and the industry is scared to death of me."

I have yet to see you say or do anything that can even remotely validate this claim.
Transcripts please.
@ Mark Standridge

I'd love to know what happened there to mark. Hey Dennis, any word on that?

@Jack THompson

I'll refrain from saying what I wanted to say as I don't want to get dennis in any trouble, but I will say this.

Jack, anyone with half a brain knows better then to get anywhere near you in regards of tv, cause your a blow hard, self serving idiot who never actually gives facts or truths, but loves to spout lies and hate as if it was going out of style.

Just as an example, I recently, via Utube, went back and looks at a number of your interviews. IN all of them I noted your CLaim that the APA found a Causal link between games and violence. SOmething that, you might remember, was disproven on GP some time ago.

SO, all totalled, you lied, ON AIR, 10 times in the past few years when you made that statement, since it was, and has been proven to be, Untrue.

Thats why no one wants to be on the air with you. Thats why you were taken off the show.
No one is scared of you, Jack. You have no power anymore.
By the way, isn't that section about Janet Reno in Jackie's Wikipedia article a hoot? Haha you can't make that stuff up!
On the issue of all the shows John Bruce brags about being on:
Frankly, I couldn't care less how many shows he's been on. It doesn't impress me one little bit seeing as he goes on shows to use, abuse, misuse and exploit the tragedies of individuals, families, and communities just to push his own personal, religious, and/'or political beliefs just so he can gain support as a tin-pot-dictator-wannabe.

As to the "industry" not brave enough to face him:
I haven't had time to read everyone's posts, so one or more folks may have mentioned these:
Tom Buscaglia., the Game Attorney, vs. John Bruce "Jack" Thompson
Tom agreed, John Bruce backed out.

Jason Della Rocca vs. John Bruce "Jack" Thompson
Jason agreed, John Bruce backed out ('cuz he wouldn't have been paid).

Penny Arcade vs. John Bruce "Jack" Thompson
Penny Arcade tried to set it up, John Bruce backed out (by violating the reasonable rules set forth)

Hal Halpin vs. John Bruce "Jack" Thompson
As GP pointed out, Hal agreed, John Bruce cringes in fear.

Now, the only one I can think of that John Bruce, mind you I say JOHN BRUCE, not me, would say the "industry backed out", would be the recent PopZArt article. Quite frankly, my opinion is that the "debate", while not handled directly, still existed by way of GP's own 4-part article in which John Bruce could have participated, which, in a way, he did. So, technically, that isn't the "industry backing out" (and since GP is tied to the ECA, not the ESA, it really isn't even "industry" but "consumer" linked).

Maybe someone else can think of ones that JOHN BRUCE (not US, but JOHN BRUCE) would say the "industry backed out"). Or even ones he backed out on.

GP:

I agree with you. In my opinion ignoring him only emboldens him. What we need is someone like Hal Halpin to debate him on national television. I don't think it will "legitimize" his argument. If anything, it could bring out the jt we all know and love here for the wide American audience.
What did Craig Scott say? His father spoke at my college, but didn't really mention video games other than a passing reference at Harris and Klebold's modified Doom levels. What was that story about Harris being hit with a gun, and what did that have to do with regulating media violence?
I think at any time people have gone in and out of th e'ignoring jack to make him go away' and direct confrontation, neither of which has worked, he whines untill someone notices him and rants against the facts presented.

There is no getting rid of him by arguing, so lets devote the thought out words to the people he preaches to, people who may actually listen. Jack thompson is a waste of everyones time.

And dennis, any update on that hearing would be great, its sounds like its going well.
@xlorep darkhelm

What, opening his mouth isn't enough? Darn, guess it's not that easy.

@nightwng2000:

So that's 0-4 by default? (What does that make his losing streak again? I forget... how sad is that when I can't even keep track of his losses anymore?)
It would not suprise me if one of the techs showed these guys the G4 video of Jack Thompson's appearance there and they were appauled by his actions in _that_ debate, hence descided to cancel his appearance.
Nope. Nice try. They refused to show up with me on the show because they're afraid of me. How sad.

Dennis, I didn't nix a debate with Hal Halpin. PAX pulled the plug, I didn't. You smoking the weed tonight, Dennis?
Whatever you need to tell yourself to get through the night, Jack.
tell us about the hearing today, Jack...
@ Jack Thompson, the hearse-chasing necrophile soon-to-be-ex-attorney

What kind of funny cigarettes have you been smoking lately?

The industry would love to debate you, it's just that they don't want to engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed man(that's you).

I don't care if you were on Today, 60 Minutes, The Simple Life, or Hogan Knows Best. Anybody can get on TV. Your appearances on those two shows had zero to do with the true facts(video games had nothing to do with Padauch or Alabama), and more to do with the tabloid sensationalism mentality that permeates the news today, but that's another story.

Besides that, you're the scared one, since you pussed out of several debates with various pro-video game people, so as Ken Titus would say, Quit being a wussy.

Practice what you preach, jabroni: Grow up and get a life.
Yes Jack, tell us about this "new complaint" that you think you're entitled to file in your lil' Federal court case that appears to be careening towards dismissal.
"Nope. Nice try. They refused to show up with me on the show because they’re afraid of me. How sad.

Dennis, I didn’t nix a debate with Hal Halpin. PAX pulled the plug, I didn’t. You smoking the weed tonight, Dennis?"

Jack on trial: Your honor, not only am I innocent of all charges, but the plaintiff is a pothead.

PAX claimed they pulled the plug because you pulled out, Jackie. Also, exactly who is this mysterious "they"? I got a real good feeling that "they" are something you made up so you have someone to point a finger at. But don't forget. You were on 60 Minutes. Wooooooo. How sad.

I think he wants to know if Dennis is smoking weed because his ran out. You can tell by the lack of the "hooah!" but the painfully obvious repeat of what he said before, without any proof to back himself up.
@GP if its anything like the hearing of jack on youtube I hope someone has a tape or a transcript. I dont know if it was talking over the judge or bringing in giant signs but it was just sad.

JT honestly seems like someone who has seen too many lawyer movies and thinks himself the righteous underdog, maybe thats why he loses all his cases.......enjoy it while you can jack, you wont be a lawyer for long.
"You smoking the weed tonight, Dennis?"

Go back to hell where you belong.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWJm5cZ3SNM

Jack, what were you smoking when you came up with THIS bullshit about how the VT Massacre was done by a guy that "trained on murder simulators", even though they found he wasn't a gamer.

I think David Gregory put it best when he said "Jack Thompson, an attorney who specializes, uh, terribly in these crimes."
i think its very important to treat jack with the respect he has earned
(im sure you all can figure this one out yourselves)
@ cullarn

None at all, right? That's exactly how much I give him as well.
exactly
That picture reminds me of the Crypt Keeper. Oh, and the dead movie stars in Rose Red. I don't think she's human.
They pulled the plug Jackie boy, because you didn't want to play by the rules. You had a chance not to be a total asshat and you blew it. It probably doesn't help that you are an extortionist as well.
I have to agree with Jacko on this one. The Penny Arcade guys wanted to keep the debate a secret to make it a surprise. Jacko wanted to send out a million emails and faxes promoting it. So it wasn't as if Jacko refused to debate, but he and Penny Arcade couldn't agree on the terms.

The way it is phrased seems like a cheap shot at Jacko implying he was afraid to be part of the debate and that doesn't seem to be the case. There are a million reasons to take shots at Jacko so taking cheap shots just seems kind of petty.
@jccalhoun graduate student

If you haven't seen enough of Jack's "words of wisdom", take a look at this...some may even recognize stuff posted here. This should have been sent to the psych examination.
"GP: Mark, I don’t know all of the details, but he’s filed a notice that he now intends to add 30+ people as defendants. Ah, thank you Dennis--I didn't want to waste the $0.08 per page to read Jack's latest tripe. Fat chance that the Judge will go for it at this stage. Lil' tip--you don't simply get to file a "notice" saying that you're going to file a new or amended complaint; you have to get permission from the Court to do so. You'd think Jack would've learned that with his little Kotaku fiasco...
"Nope. Nice try. They refused to show up with me on the show because they’re afraid of me. How sad."

To be afraid of you, wouldn't you have to be a threat or something? But please feel free to try and back up your statement with facts. I'm curious to how you came to this conclusion.

And no, your paranoid "Everyone is out to get me! delusions don't count as fact.
@ Mr Blond

Scott said something about how at one point, when Harris shot his gun, the slide ended up hitting him in the nose, causing it to bleed and "supposedly" bring him back to reality. It sounds kind of odd tho, as jdsmp911 said, there were videos of Klebold and Harris shooting guns in the mountains You'd expect someone who's fired before not to make a stupid mistake like that.
“GP: Mark, I don’t know all of the details, but he’s filed a notice that he now intends to add 30+ people as defendants. omg jack has turnjed into jonathon lee richards!!!!!!!

that means this is definitely gonna be at alot of legal sites and a great joke

(for those that dont get my joke jonathon sued 57 pages worth of people/objects {yes you read that right inanimate objects such as the book mein kampf the planet of pluto}) for the record though jon was not a lawyer he was a prisoner going pro se
Anyone have a video of this or find it posted on YouTube? I got home like 5 hours after it aired.
@cullarn

reminds me of jacks 37 page doosie, implicating penny arcade and bloggers in the vast antijack conspiracy.
@chris

there is certainly a conspiracy (lead by the bar of course) its to get rid of embarrasments to the bar association
"I’ve been on the Today show eight times and 60 Minutes twice for a reason. I know what I’m talking about, and the industry is scared to death of me. They should be. Hooah!"

Anyone else find it kind of sad that a few tv appearances seem to be the highlight of Jack's life? I mean most of the rest of the "Save the children from the Video Games!" crowd has reasonably successful political careers, or large organizations they're responsible for to be proud of. Yet the only thing Jack's got is a few minutes of talking head time. He's never even had a successful legal career to look back on with pride.
@Gray17

he did it to himself
thompson, I still call bullshit. As was stated earlier, the only coward is you. Buscaglia challenged you to a debate, you pulled out. There have been others as well. That lawyer for the industry that was on the show would have eaten you for lunch and still have room for seconds.
@cullarn-

I believe his name is actually Jonathan Lee Riches.
What I find ironic is that Jack Thompson is stirring up all this negativity. He's the Kyle Sandilands of America if you think about it.

(For those of you who don't know, Kyle Sandilands is a sorry excuse for a radio host in Australia, he's rude, beligerant and throws a tantrum everytime someone shoots him down. He breaks the rules and complains when he gets caught out. The guy couldn't even last 5 minutes in the Big Brother AU house because he wouldn't follow the rules and got punished for it)

I've been a lurker here for a long time and I will say this, Jack Thompson is no different then any other televangical out there who tries to make a quick buck with outragious claims. Once he's had his 5 minutes in the spotlight, everyone will move on again and he'll fade into a dim memory. We're already seeing this now and the only reason that he's causing such a commotion is he knows that his time is nearly up.
Oh so many thoughts right now...

It's a political game. It's not exactly rare to tug at the heart strings or just charged issues of the masses to swing them in your favor. I'd really like to see someone on TV mention all the parents who have credited video games with teaching their disabeled children skils like reading. And I sincerely ask anyone who's seen different to let me know.

I have some amazing stories I wish I could share. If it weren't for HIPPA I could (we're not even technically allowed to describe a patient's symptoms or outcome, even with not other information). The quick rundown: I'm interning as a group therapy aid USING video games for treatment. We help kids with just about any disorder learn social skills and acceptable behavior (using behavior modification). I have yet to see one of these kids NOT be helped. Some are even like new people after their first session. But you don't hear about it in the news or cited as something positive with video games. You hear about all the killers these games have supposedly made.

Wow, that was longer than I intended. Here's the stuff I REALLY wanted to point out:

1) Like most people have said here, no one wants to debate with someone who is unreasonable and falsifies information.

2) I want proof of the supposed fear. I'm talking I want to hear the voice mail or read documents about it with third-party references I can check for accuracy. And if I don't find a phrase akin to "they say they want a weaker opponent" or "they're afraid of you," then I want payment for wasting my time for trying to prove fabricated statements to me.

3) My guess is that aside from his growing reputation for inaccuracies and falsifications, they wanted guests who've been in the news more recently.

4) Has anyone else noticed about the TV appearances JBT DOESN'T ever mention? I never seem to see him flaunt his appearances that have ripped him apart. When's the last time you heard him say "I was on G4/Hardball" or anything like that? His supposed expertise must not have anything to do with those appearances. At least not the way he would like.

-Michael Schwinger
did anyone else notice that in his little list of tv shows he's appeared in he "forgot" to mention his brief appearance on G4?
The final verdict on who won: It was a Tie

Funny thing was that the odds were stacked against the Industry Lawyer and she still pulled it to a tie (only because time ran out). She shot down the "I can't control my kids" arguement in one sentence! Good play for the industry.

Here is what was against the indistry speaker:

Columbine sob story
bias of the host
Yee pulling the heartstrings with the "for the children" comments

and she still came out tied.

I take this as proof that the indistry has the better arguement. She even got the host to admit that you can't go against the Constitution regardless of intent.

I think the segment was cut short. They did a segment on little Miss Lohan the newest trainwreak in the long line of hollywood trainwreaks that was twice as long.

@ JT

Jack, you need to stop with the asshole thing. It is not working for you and as everyone who has been anywhere near a schoolyard arguement, the first one to say "NO! Your stupid and shut up!" is the one who looses. As I recall you were the first one to throw a hissy fit, so you loose. Get the balls to debate someone on national TV without a single bit of slander against their character and use just the facts. Set up your own site where you can say whatever you want and stop harassing us and Dennis. Stop hijacking the comments. Stop being a jackass with no life and with no ambition to do anything other than harass little insignificant gamers on a website. It is pathetic and low.

I hate to break it to you, but no one here is worth your time. Not even Dennis. You have a bigger crusade against the industry. What are you doing here wasting your time with us? THe only reason you are here is for attention, and if we are the only source of attention for you then you really have sunk low. It means you are losing. You are just wasting your time with us. Nothing that we type here is going anywhere other than here. Being the offical Gamepolitics.com troll is not a good career move and it does not provide dental.
@venomandcarnage:

That wasn't one of his one-sided 'shooting fish in a barrel' "debates" that he "won", so of course he didn't include it.
(sorry for the double post)

@Archgabe:

Thread over, you win. (as well as any other threads JT plans on trolling in the future.)
@DarkTetsuya

Another factoid Jack conveniently forgets si that the point of a debate is not to "win", it's to come away with a better understanding of the opposite, but, since JT prefers ignorance being bliss, he'll take any victory he can get.
Mr Jack Thompson.

I will gladly debate with you.
There a clip anywhere, I was at work yesterday
Apparently, Jack Thompson is allowed to make the assertation that Dennis smokes weed. But, if anyone should make a baseless accusation about Thompson, well they're just another "pinhead" who will most certainly burn in hell because Jack says so.

Re: Debate

Dear Hal:

I was interested by the statement yesterday at GamePolitics.com that you would have been willing to debate me on Court TV regarding the sale of mature/adult video games to kids, but you were traveling to PAX 2007 where Dennis McCauley reports I nixed a chance to debate you. In fact, as you know the Penny Arcade folks cancelled my visit. I did not, so I have to wonder also about his reportage of your unavailability for a debate on tv as well. Dennis gets things a bit confused quite often.

But moving on, I hereby take you up on your statement that you would be delighted to debate me. Fine. I’ll do so anyplace, anytime. Your sister-in-law, whom I trust you know, can set it up.

Doug Lowenstein, the former head of ESA and the alleged great proponent of freedom of expression and the value of the marketplace of ideas, refused all of my offers, for years, to debate anyplace, anytime. Doug’s approach on my free speech was to threaten Ed Bradley and CBS if they put me on 60 Minutes. Maybe Doug was afraid I would use his own traveling make-up artist and wind up looking as dapper as he always does.

Be that as it may, please don’t go the Lowenstein route and say one thing and then do another. I think we should debate this rather large issue. I scared everyone else in your industry off Court TV yesterday. I trust you are made of sterner stuff.

Call or e-mail me. Let’s do this as soon as we can, on a college campus, preferably.

Oh, and if I’m as crazy and inept as gamers say I am, you should be itching for the chance to make a monkey of me.

Regards, Jack
@ Jack
Penny Arcade pulled the plug specifically because of your actions, they wanted a level of security so they did not disclose the fact that a high profile individual such as yourself was going to appear, it is their event and they had a right to do just that, then you like the asshole you are decided to just ignore that simple clause. There are consequences for people's actions, Jack, when people are being nice and say "hey, yeah you want a forum to debate, how about our event that regularly attracts thousands?" they get to put reasonable conditions like "just don't tell anyone till the day of" and if you don't follow those conditions then there are consequences for that, so stop being such a dick and playing the victim with everything, you knew what was going to happen so essentially Dennis was right you did shirk out of that debate.
@ Jack
Sorry for the double post but I just watched another youtube video of you saying that kids "trained, literally" on Super Columbine Massacre RPG. Stop saying that, you know that's not true, you know what a turn based rpg, anyone who's been involved in the video game industry as long as you have, even if not directly, would have to know what an RPG is vs. an FPS, you know that as a turn based RPG there's nothing in the game that gives any form of applicable "training" for real life be it marksmanship, gun use or otherwise. You only say that because you also know that your audiance probably is unaware of the content of SCMRPG and therefore your able to just say whatever you want even though it has no factual basis.
@marlowe

they get to put reasonable conditions like “just don’t tell anyone till the day of”

come on you expect jack to understand basic contract law?

are you feeling ok ?
Oh he understood, he used the clause on purpose so by violating it PA cancelled and not him, so he could place the blame on them rather than being seen to chicken out himself.

Fortunately the gamer audience isnt as gullible as the general public.
@chris

yes i know but i had to take a shot at him (so to speak)
I think its basic law that jack doesnt understand not just contracts.

I mean watch this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QT30Iwp2wNM

It honestly seems like jack is just someone whose seen too many lawyer movies (I'd say played too much phoenix wright if it werent ole jack), always thinking himself the undedog against the world, with his crucial piece of evidence (which is ultimately insignificant against his own misconduct) to show the villains for what they are. He has no grasp of the proceedures that make up the legal system, hence why he is forever losing his cases.

lets hope his disbarment goes well.
Jack Thompson: « Dennis, I didn’t nix a debate with Hal Halpin. PAX pulled the plug, I didn’t. You smoking the weed tonight, Dennis? »

http://gamepolitics.com/2007/06/05/thompson-blames-penny-arcade-for-canc...

Huh uh... You didn't agree to the terms set by the event organisers (Penny Arcade) and you accuse Dennis of smoking weed. Way to go, Jack! Keep it up. The more slander that spews out of your mouth, the deeper your hole (I still haven't deleted the email where you called me an idiot and threaten to slander my name. Yay...)
Hey Jack, put YOUR money where YOUR mouth is and regale us with the story of yesterday's hearing before Judge Jordan.
"I was scheduled last night and this morning to be on this Starr Jones segment. I am now not going to be on. Want to know why? Dennis, you can call me, and I will play the producer’s voice mail for you. Better yet, call Beth at 212-973-xxxx, and she will tell you that the video game industry people are afraid to go on the air with me."

Was it not YOU who shot down an opportunity to sit face-to-face with Hal Halpin?
@ Jack
Not every one is afraid of you, I saw you debating Adam Sessler a few months ago he obviously wasn't afraid (although I have to say I'm not a big Sessler fan and frankly you came out of that looking like the more calm and prepared of the two, of course it was on G4 so everyone's mind was already made up.) That being said Halpin's a much better orator than Sessler and as a lobbyist is far more used to speaking with people whom he disagrees with and will probably tear you a new one.
@Jack Thompson
I noticed you never mentioned the "Hidden nudity" in Oblivion, why is this? Is it because Todd Howard double speeks better then you or what?
@ Jack

"Nope. Nice try. They refused to show up with me on the show because they’re afraid of me. How sad."

You have any evidence of this, or is this another manifestation of your N.P. complex?

"Dennis, I didn’t nix a debate with Hal Halpin. PAX pulled the plug, I didn’t. You smoking the weed tonight, Dennis?"

PAX pulled the plug because YOU nixed the confidentiality they wanted. You may not have nixed it yourself, but announcing their plans when they TOLD you they wanted them secret had the same effect. Oh, nice comment about the smoking weed, dumbass. You're lucky he lets you post here at all, and you go and insult him instead of merely correcting him (even though you're STILL wrong)
@Jack

Also, how much money are you going to ask for?

If you do it for free (minus maybe air-fare) I think you'd impress a lot of people, and show that maybe you have intentions other than getting on television.
"In fact, as you know the Penny Arcade folks cancelled my visit. I did not"

Incorrect. They set the rules for the debate, you declined. So it wasn't them that canceled, it was you. Just because there wouldn't be a camera in your withered mug to stroke your inflated ego you decided it not worth your time.

You "bearing false witness" is truly revolting.

Austin_Lewis: JDKJ: You forgot C) the fact that, for some reason, every time he did something that would suggest he shouldn't be in the military, let alone an officer, higher ups ignored it or let it slide.

JDKJ: Part of the problem is, I believe, that (a) the Army had a lot of time and money already invested in him and which they were unwilling to simply write-off and (b) an increasing need for the type of skills and services he provided.

JDKJ: And that even if he was begging not to get cut loose, he was apparently a real good candidate for being cut loose, anyway.

JDKJ: @chada: And while Kennedy once noted that there's usually more than enough blame for everyone to get a slice, the possibility that the Army was unwilling to cut loose someone who was asking to get cut loose could be a factor.

JDKJ: I'm no psychologist, but I'm told that crazy people have a tendency to do crazy things.

chadachada321: Whoops, was out of the convo for awhile. I do wonder what type of ammo he used etc, but the real issue is WHY he did it, not HOW
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:56am
JDKJ: But if it turns out that they actually did, they'll have Hell to pay.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:45am
JDKJ: And I'd tend to rule out the possibilty of FN Herstal supplying restricted ammunition to someone merely because they're ordering it from a military base.

JDKJ: I know you don't leave your gated community and get around much in dark alleys, so you may be surprised to learn that there's this thing called "the black market" where, if you've got enough money, ain't too much of anything which can't be bought.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:36am
Austin_Lewis: Or, maybe he or someone else at the base ordered the SS190 from FN Herstal.

Austin_Lewis: the hands of private owners. They run about 300 dollars minimum for a box of 50, and boxes of AP 5.7 are extremely scarce, mainly residing in the hands of Class III stores or individuals who for one reason or another got a demo box of it.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:30am
Austin_Lewis: There are other firearms that fire the 5.7. However, I too would like to know where he got the ammo and what kind was used. Maybe Hasan, planning not to live through this, went out and bought one the boxes of SS190 that are floating around in

JDKJ: And it isn't yet clear what type of ammunition Hasan used. It's strange that he purchased a gun but didn't purchase ammunition for it at the same place and time. Especially because the calibre required is peculiar to the actual gun.
