Bill Gates Enforces M-Rating in Midnight Halo 3 Sale

September 25, 2007
Microsoft founder and chairman Bill Gates carded the first guy in a retail line to buy Halo 3.

Himself. Personally.

As reported by Reuters, Gates was on hand at a midnight launch event at a Best Buy near Microsoft HQ in Redmond, Washington:
Bill Gates was cheered by a crowd of more than 500 people when he emerged from the store to shake hands.

Gates personally sold and autographed the first copy to Ritesh David, a 17-year-old who was stunned to find himself being served by the richest man in America.

"I gotta check your ID to see if you're 17," Gates said, in a joking reference to the game's "mature" rating, meaning it is intended for customers 17 and older.

I also LOVE the fact that it was a Best Buy that he was at.

Ahem. There's a message there I think.

Ahem.

who wants to bet that thompson is going to claim responsibility and say gates did it out of fear from his legal threat?

Lol whats it matter if that was the real Jack Thompson anyway. His real purpose is to keep the games out of the hands on children or so he says. But there are people under 17 playing the game. My friend got his game at midnight and said there were some moms there with there 12-15 year old sons buying them a copy. One of the clerks told the mom about the rating and they still bought the game for them. Must mean the clerks and parents are doing there jobs.

Anyone else wonder if maybe he is on sting missions right now with his 15 year old son going to different stores to try and get the game with out ID. To prove to the world how the age checking system does not work.

Heh, nice bit of publicity on the part of Mr. Gates.

would've been funnier if he was under age and turned away.

Maybe it was a way to support/mock Jack Thompson for his letter to bill a while back.

Gimmick! But an awesome one.

I wonder what he would have done if the guy was under 17. I'm sure he asked for the ID in a joking way, but it would have been a PR disaster if he had found the guy to be 15 or 16 and sold the game to him anyway. Of course, it would have also been a bad situation on-hand if he had refused to sell it to him as well.

@some guy

If he had refused to sell it I doubt it would have been a disaster... if anything, it would have enforced the idea that the industry is serious about not selling to minors.

Oh, it would have been WAAAAY more funny if a Parent, with their 12 or 13 year old kid were there first.
Gates (to Parent): “I gotta check your ID to see if you’re 17.”

Parent (showing ID): Okey doke, but it's not for me, it's for my daughter.

Gates: Uh, ok. So long as YOU are over 17. Uh, you know this game is rated...

Parent (cutting him off): M, yeah, I know. For Blood and Gore, Mild Language and Viloence. I'm not dumb as the politicians and certain other individuals and organizations want the General Public to think Parents are. I know about the ESRB, GameSpot, and several dozen other review, preview, and informational resources. I also know my OWN child better than any of them. And... (goes into a 20 minute rant about being educated about video games, movies, TV, music, and where to find information about each product and knowing their child better than anyone else and not needing their Parental Rights overridden by tin-pot-dictator-wannabes.) Oh, and it's great to meet you Mr. Gates. I'm a big fan of Microsoft, except for... (goes into another 20 minute rant about buggy OSes, EULAs that violate consumer rights, and several other issues of importance).

Gates: Uh, yeah, ok, great to meet you too. Uh, yeah. :: Walks out stunned by such a well informed, and talkative, Parent and consumer.

Hmm, didn't someone say this night wasn't going to happen? I watched the coverage on G4 and tried to win a 360, no such luck, so the night is rather ,meaningless to me.

as a sidenote, heres a pic that someone found the windows blue screen of death in halo 3. HAHA!

@theninja

Always loved Microsoft's sense of humor about that whole thing.

Well that ought to put Jack in his place.

Hmm. Now i ponder, should i actually bother to go buy a 360. Will the advent of Halo 3 make microsoft re-double its efforts to fix the Red Rings of Death? I'm lazy and i don't want to have to send in my 360.

Halo 3, your so damn Tempting! So Very Damned Tempting!!!

Getting Halo 3 last night was a nightmare if you didn't have ID. They had a zero tolerance policy about it, they didn't care if you were forty! I had to get my 18 year old little brother to buy it for me. How embarrassing. :P I remember picking up Bioshock and a few weeks ago and getting carded then too. In fact I remember being carded there years ago, whenever I got an M rated game. Management is apparently very serious about these rules. I'm sure an employee would get a write up for forgetting to card someone.

I think Jack is willfully ignorant of these policies. "Any kid can run in and buy these things!!!" That's an utter lie Jack.

This is actually pretty cool. The richest man in the world working in retail, if only for 30 seconds. That's pretty funny. It also shows that he is well aware of how big Halo 3 is.

@theninja

HAHAHAHA! I love it! :D

I think the message is clear.

Jack Thompson, go shut yourself in the cooler.

Kudos to Bill Gates on this one.

Not planning on any sudden flu viruses, but picking my copy up during lunch.

This isn't suprising. Remember the Xbox 1 launch? I believe Gates personally sold the first one as well.

Also, the Blue Screen of Death was a common occurrence in Halo 2. Notably, the computer to open the garage doors in the Zanzibar multiplayer map would go blue screen after you activated the doors.

at least he has a sense of humor

Pretty cool I must say :) .

Guys - I have to say, I'm no fan of the Gates-meister, however, as amusing it would have been if there had been some kind of social faux-pas..... Well, let's not kid ourselves. The "first-purchaser" was almost certainly screened. High probability that the fact that he was 17 and had his ID was no accident.

Funky - for the life of me I can't remember ever being carded for a game. Then again I'm in my mid 30's, and people my age don't shop the same way teenagers do. (Clerks have a tendency to zero in on us. I suspect it's because we have discretionary income, usually know what we want and don't have to ask mommy for the money - but not being in retail - I don't know for sure.)

@jadedcritic

I'm 27 and i still get carded for 18 rated things here in the UK. Even for gaming magazines where the demo disc got a rating ^^

My personal experience here is that shops do a fine job enforcing ratings.

Jack, you've just had the piss taken by the richest man in the world. How does it feel?

What if the kid was like me and was almost 18 but still didn't have ID? That would've been awkward.

Awesome! Take THAT Jacko, people DO care about our nations youth...Even if I already know a 14 year old that got the $70 edtiton.

Haha, I just saw this on MSNBC and was wondering if GP reported it...

I think you're all missing the real point here...

How much is that thing going to fetch on eBAY??? =)

In all seriousness though, this was a really great thing for Gates to do. Not only for Halo 3, but for the industry as a whole. If the founder of Microsoft can take the time to card someone for an M game, then certainly an $8 or $9 an hour employee can.

Hehe, That's good. Kinda like back in the day when Bill inserted himself into DOOM for a video clip promoteing Win 95.

Wow, Take two and microsoft were both sent cease and desist orders from Jack and now he is 0 for 2. I wonder if he is boiling in rightous anger right now.

Did anyone hit him with a pie? No? Then who cares? I wouldn't have even remembered Halo 3 was out yesterday, until I didn't see any of my retail-working friends online. Poor bastards.

I guess it's good publicity. Good press, and high profile.

But forgive me if I can't muster up goodwill toward the richest (or 2nd) man in the world who is playing at being a retail clerk for one night to get his picture in the papers. Try living off those wages, Bill. Then we can talk.

I woulda booed him. Seriously. I don't like his ethics.

@~the1jeffy

"Try living off those wages, Bill. Then we can talk." -- Well, if he did that, then we wouldn't have one of the greatest philanthropists in US history, now would we? He's given away *BILLIONS* of dollars to charity, I'd love see some Best Buy employee do that if he woke up with Gates' money tomorrow.

@theninja:

LOL, that's great. :P

@PlayItBogart

It does, but he's like a cockroach and doesn't know when to quit...

@Onidragon:

Who said anything about our nation's youth? Jackass is only in it for the money.

@AJ:

I thought he was 0 for... 7? 8? 200 trillion? It's gotten so bad I've lost count.

I'd prolly get Halo 3 eventually, but I don't have a 360. My brother's is RROD'd though so I'll at least have to wait till his is working again.

Hi guys, this is a bit off topic but:

I made it today. My first ever photoshop!

Hey, if he can commpare people to Hitler and Saddam, so can I.

*compare. Edit Pl0x.

Master Chief looks like he need to eat more in that Photo...

@Jesse Young:

Totally worth invoking Godwin's Law. Find that photoshop contest he was having a legal hissyfit about, and you'd prolly win hands down! :P

@DarkTetsuya

Thanks! But.. I'm gonna sound like a total idiot but...

What's Godwin's law?

@ Jesse

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_Law

Basically, whenever someone in a forum or blog makes a generlized comparison to Hitler or Nazis the conversation is now dead.

Lemme just say as a disclaimer that i'm not always the biggest MS fan, but I got to say, that, is how you launch a product Mr. Gates.

Now if only you and Ms would fix some of vistas bugs.

but seriously, this is great, I love it when the big wigs meet with the common people. Reminds us and them that there still human.

And the icing on the cake is that he enforced the rating. In your FACE jack.

Good job bill, good job.

@E. Zachary Knight:

Besides, it's only fair cause "Gamers are terrorists," remember?

Okay, now the real question is... is that a real guy in a spartan suit in the picture? And if so, where can I get one?!

@ X37V

You can find them at the Microsoft rummage sale, since the Halo movie isn't getting off the ground ;)

Looks like I got to Bill Gates on the "Mature" rating. You're welcome, America!

Hooah! Jack Thompson

E. Zachary KnightIan, I think in this case, the rating is well deserved. To get a good rating, I would assume that a company would have to release the game with no DRM, or at least fully disclosed DRM.05/21/2012 - 1:46pm
