Watch Idaho A.G.'s ESRB TV Spot

October 4, 2007
Yesterday GamePolitics reported that Idaho Attorney General Lawrence Wasden was partnering with the ESRB in a campaign to raise parental awareness of game content issues:

Here is one of the TV spots:

DING DING DING

We have a winner folks. Putting the decision squarely where it belongs, in the hand of the parents.

Well Done Attorney General Wasden and the ESRB. I hope to see more of these messages getting out like this in others states soon!

Looks good. I like how he said there is no substitute for parental supervision.

Short and to the point. I think the ad is stating the obvious, but I guess I grew up on gaming and there are still some people left in the dark.

I'm shocked, a political official is taking a practical no-nonsense approach to addressing the (valid) concern of children playing inappropriate video games? No lawsuit, no impossible-to-enforce legislation? I don't know what to say, except that I'm glad to see that there are at least some people in the world willing to take a more sensible approach to this issue without over dramatizing it.

I wish he was in my state (Illinois), I'd vote for him.

@Doctor Proctor

Seconded.

@Enemy Republic:

I second that :) .

I love it, the more I see stuff like this the more encouraged I am.

"There's no substitute for parental supervision".

A-MEN. That was very well written, even if the acting inevitably looked as stiff and hollow as any other PSA, but I guess that's just the nature of the beast.

Well done, Mr. Wasden.

"Hey Mikey, I think he likes it..."

I like this message. It is a perfect example of exactly what is the right way to deal with violent video games in regards to one's children.

This should be broadcast as a PSA on every channel on TV. If I lived in Idaho, I'd find Wasden and shake his hand.

Short, informative, non-judgemental and shows them exactly where to look.

This is one of the better ones I've seen.

@Necro

If I didn't miss yesterday's ordeal, I would have and also asked him and the ESRB's rep questions about the campaign and how possibly it could be done in many more states or even at the national level. And actually, I think the TiVo got the news reports and what not from yesterday, so I'll see what I can rip for you gentlemen.

Aside from that, I'm pleased to see that my A.G. is doing something worthwile with what few tax dollars Idaho has, especially since most of it goes towards education in general. Too bad we're still poor in comparison, but at least he's doing the right thing instead of trying to pass bullshit legislation.

The most important word there was children.

If he hadn't said that, I would be using my two favorite words (which we won't go into.. yet..) and I imagine everyone else here would.

Now that one word changes his arguement from a Nanny-State advertisement into a valid, justified point.

"There is no substitute for parental supervision."

This guy's got it...at least some people do. I think I know why, too. The guy's under the age of 50, a rarity in the political and law system.

"No subsitute for parental supervision."

.....WINNER!!!!!!

very nice. good to see at least one state is led by reasonable people.

@ Conejo

if by "led by reasonable people" you mean "led by senators that like handjobs in airport bathrooms", then why yes, what a wonderful state.

esrb videos, erstwhile closeted senators, and potatoes. hey - my bags are packed...

Very nice. We need commercials like this in every state.

I almost wept for joy.

A perfectly sane, rational, and responsible message to parents!

--Ray

Quality. Encouraging parents to get involved. What a novel concept.

I can't wait to watch this. I am at work right now and wish I could see it. I am glad though that the reviews are coming in in support of the video though.

it.. it so beautiful it brings a tear to my eye

It was a little corny, but it gets the point across nicely, I just hope this actually airs

I still don't like it, as sane as it is. It still makes video games look evil. They make it look like anything over rating E will ruin the children. Man, how can you guys like this? I'm dying over here.

im 15, and my mom still wont even buy me T rated games

yea, i know they're trying to raise awareness, but can they just remind parents that ratings dont dictate what games you can and cant give your kids. e.g. a mom wont buy her 11-year-old kid smash bros cuz its rated T...gamestop employee gets in big trouble for letting a 16-year-old buy half life. alot games aren't really as bad as the ESRB says they are.

@retrogamer88

this is a godsend compared to what thompson and his toadies want to happen to video games

because for once, the politition says that parents should look out for thier children.

Even if they think M and T are the devil, its better then the flip side were they get shocked when little timmy is playing GTA.

what game was that? I think Rockman X colection (what little we do see says Rockman X's buster to me), but I don't think e 10 plus exsited at the time of release

We need more people the like of Mr. Wasden

damn this guy needs to run for president because odds are he would do a much better job then anyone else

I finally watched it and I like it. It is simple. It does not demonize the game industry. It is mostly a plea to parents to get involved in their children's media consumption.

I hope to see more of these.

well thats one thing Jack Thompson cant seem to get through his thick empty skull.

Short, sweet, and to the point - a solid PSA.

I can't really tell what game it is. At :12, the background says "BLASTMAN III" or some such. At :14, the title looks like something "X," but that's definitely not Mega Man on the cover. Given the other games in the background ("The Enlisted"?), I'm inclined to think it is a fictitious game for a fictitious system.

Now that's the proper way to raise consumer awareness about the ESRB rating system.

That way, parents will have less to blame when their son commits juvenile crime.

I wish this would be standard on all channels in all 50 states.

It was pretty bland and uninspired, but Mr. Wasden touched on the important bits, which is far more than can be said for most politicians. It's too bad he's got the expressive capability of a grapefruit.

Solid effort, at any rate. Good on ya, sir.

@ "jack thompson pretty much"
If you're not going to post under your own name, don't post at all.

This is good.

Korrd is right that it is kind of bland, but it does emphasize the right things. Parenting is the important part.

I'd vote for him.

This made me happy to see. Clear and to the point. No placing the blame on anything/one other than the ones in charge of the children, as it should be.

Thank goodness, somebody has their head screwed on right. This is probably one of the first times I've heard something remotely like this that didn't infer or state anything negative.

JT, your sensei has revealed himself. Go to him and train.

E. Zachary KnightYeah, that's how I feel about retail exclusive DLC too. ;)05/21/2012 - 3:37pm
RedMageThat's what I started to figure too. They seem to have trouble coming up with an effective scare tactic. At one point they referred to it as "online looting" which just sounds stupid.05/21/2012 - 3:34pm
E. Zachary KnightOf all the sucky suckiness that ever sucked. Lego Batman 2 will suffer from sucky retailer exclusive DLC. Suck! http://tinyurl.com/ckq67vg05/21/2012 - 3:30pm
E. Zachary KnightAs for Dodd, I think it is mostly that he realizes that calling copyright infringement "theft" is bad for PR and that they need to change tactics. Just like how they went from using "piracy" to using "theft."05/21/2012 - 1:48pm
E. Zachary KnightIan, I think in this case, the rating is well deserved. To get a good rating, I would assume that a company would have to release the game with no DRM, or at least fully disclosed DRM.05/21/2012 - 1:46pm
IanCLisa - what do companies have to do to get a good rating from that site?05/21/2012 - 12:54pm
