U.K. Minister Speaks Well of Games at London Festival, But...

October 26, 2007
The U.K. government supports the video game industry, said Minister of State for Culture, Media and Sport Margaret Hodge this week. At the same time, Hodge acknowledged some of the concerns over violent content faced by the British game biz.

As reported by MCV, Hodge made her remarks at the London Games Festival. Hodge discussed economic incentives as well the current government review of video game violence being carried out by Dr. Tanya Byron. Hodge said:
The arguments have become very polarized, to such an extent that while some commentators blame the industry for all society's ills, others do recognize the huge opportunities [video games] hold to support education and development.

We've all seen the media coverage that caricatures the industry to absolutely a ridiculous extent and this isn't helpful. But we must equally acknowledge the fear that some in society have for their children. That is a real and genuine fear...

I know some of you think [the Tanya Byron] review has been inspired by a negative view of video games within government and I want to just assure you that this is not the case. But we do have a duty to protect children from inappropriate material and we will do that unashamedly. But we also see this review as an opportunity, actually, to wrestle the issue away from tabloid journalism and provide an independent space for a proper and open review of issues.

Can anyone really name me a video game more violent than say... Movies like Hostel or Saw?

Is Jack Thompson suing Cable On Demand, NetFlix, Blockbuster, etc... for allowing Minors to get them?

Why is this so one-sided?
I don't believe it. No, I mean it.

Everyone that works for Gordon Brown lies. Everyone.
Hey, I am verry careful when it comes to letting someone from the government talk about videogaming, but I can see that there is a real genuine fear from many parents who have younger children.

Instead of trying to wait and see what will happen, I have taken a fair few months since early in the year to write my own essay on Videogaming and So far I have jsut posted two parts onto Deviant Art site.

Here are the first two parts of my essay while the other 14 parts are still being written as I am speeking.

Hope to hear from some of your replies and also just to let you know you might need to be a Deviant Art member to join because I have the essay under Mature Content because of the topics I am talking about.

So yeah, I just wonder if you guys at Game Politics were interested about it and something that I would love to share to all of you when I finish my essay.

So.. I read the essay how?
Oh.. Sorry mate, I don't give out my E-Mail address to many people.
God that ELSPA AGM video is so dull.
"But we do have a duty to protect children from inappropriate material and we will do that unashamedly."

No, no you don't. I'm not aware of any law that says "Children must be protected". You only have to protect your own children. Not your neighbor Bob's children and certainly not anyone else's. Stop lying to the people and encourage parental responsibility! That's the best and only true way to protect children. Any government laws intended to do so will only harm them in the future.
Gameboy, to be fair, there are laws that state children (in general) must be protected.

From certain things.

Things like physical/mental abuse, sexual abuse, etc. Video games, of course, are not on that list.
@ lumi

Yes, but the things you just mentioned are actually harmful. Not just to children, but everyone. It's illegal to physically/mentally abuse anyone, and sexual abuse (typically rape) is illegal as well. That's not really special treatment for children. It may be seen as sicker, but it's just as illegal to beat a 40 year old as a 4 year old.
Its just typical disingenuous speak by a politician. Just wait for her to comment to a different audience about how evil games are.

Nothing to see here...
Tabloid Media? WTF try tabloid politics! I've yet to see a tabloid magazine cover "how video games turned my boy into a killer."
"But we also see this review as an opportunity, actually, to wrestle the issue away from tabloid journalism and provide an independent space for a proper and open review of issues."

If you want stuff out of the tabloids you don't hire a TV-shrink.

tabloid nannisim is somehow better? 0-o
Well, at least they're honest. Some people wouldn't admit they think it's the government's responsibility to protect children from inappropriate things.
