Tivo Alert: CBS Evening News with Katie Couric Looks at Manhunt 2 this Evening

October 30, 2007
sieberg.jpgCBS reporter Daniel Sieberg (left) has a Manhunt 2 feature planned for tonight's edition of the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.

Based on Sieberg's video preview, it sounds like a fairly comprehensive look at the uproar surrounding the game.

GP: Big thanks to reader Merc25 for the heads-up!

@Jabrwock

Sheer brilliance, not talking to Jack.

It was funny, nonetheless!

@ the one pretending to act like Jack

Stop doing that you idiot, I come to this site to see real post, including the real Jack Thompson comments to know what is going on.

Dennis has already banned people before for doing this nonsense.

When I come to this site, I do not want to get mixed up with who the real Jack Thompson is that is leaving a comment.

@Phoenix: We tried that on LJ... Jack went through over 50 of them, as I recall :P

@Radio Guy I meant there was way to much coverage of manhunt 2. Incase you thought something else.

I have this set on my DVR. ^_^

All I ask is that someone has a link for me tomorrow.

Heh. I've gotta admit, Rockstar's marketing strategy is pure brilliant. They hardly have to pay a dime to promote the game. Their opponents do such a wonderful job at whipping up the media that they get brand penetration and free promotion right there on the evening news. And all the while, they just make this thing even more desirable to kids who otherwise wouldn't have given the game a second look.

Oh Sweet Zombie Jesus, would these schmucks give up the bandwagon already?

this actually does sound like its going to be a relatively unbiased look at the issue. Anyone know the exact time its supposed to be on?

@ Distaria

Thanks for the great Futurama reference...and I agree, they really should drop it. I'm getting tired of people freaking out to "protect the children" when it's only their views and interests that are coming into play.

it's "25 To Life" all over again.

Unbiase, I doubt that Katie needs to up her ratings or she is out. They are already talking about replacing her. Since everyone is reporting it Iguess she wants to jion in. The game could be the worst in the world but all this hipe they must be laughing at t2

I'm shocked. He actually seemed to be toning it down, specifically mentioning it goes "a bit further than other games", and "there's no scientific evidence showing behavioral changes".

I might actually watch it.
-- If your wiimote goes snicker-snack, check your wrist-strap...

Sounds like they talked to everyone but Jack. :D
-- If your wiimote goes snicker-snack, check your wrist-strap...

I hope this isn't just more shock TV for the sake of increasing ratings... oh, wait... that's all TV is.

I find my increasing disdain for television media disturbing....

(Insert Star Wars joke here)

@Skylar

Never try that again. Ever.

@ Skylar

That is why I have limited my television intake to only certain shows that are fictional and advertise themselves as such, not these fictional shows that advertise themselves as nonfiction.

@ Phantom

I totally agree with you.

Bla bla bla manhunt 2

@ theshroomguy

Bla bla bla Bully. Look where that got them!

Anyone seen the sudden surge in school bullying over the past year?

I havent!

If this doesnt interfere with ecw i might watch it...Hey dennis what time is it on out here in cali do u know...or what time there since i think its like a 3 hour difference...

thanks

All TV programmes are Fubar.

It will be on at 7:00 PM eastern time in Baltimore, MD on WJZ-TV 13.

It is funny; I have not ever heard/seen an advertisement for MH2. the only place i heard anything about it (other than here) is when these news outlets mentions some kind of story they're doing about it.

@jer

I've seen a sidebar advert on Joystiq, but it's very non-descript, it's just an image of the cover and the name. But yes, mostly R* have hardly had to pay a dime for advertising this game, the Media and the Watchdogs have saved them a fortune, and will make them a fortune by the increased revenue all this controversy will gain them in sales.

The real irony is that the watchdogs are, apparently, too stupid to figure this out.

"It is funny; I have not ever heard/seen an advertisement for MH2. the only place i heard anything about it (other than here) is when these news outlets mentions some kind of story they’re doing about it."

Ditto. I wouldn't have known of this game's existence if not for the media frenzy. I just don't look for this type of game.

Rockstar Games knows how to optimize their marketing through hysteria from people who don't "get it", that much is true.

hasnt south park made a couric a unit of measure for crap?

Wow MH2 comes out and the world breaks in two.

Amazing.

Phantom:

You doubted for a moment they weren't doing this on purpose?

I wonder what game they will flip out over next, and when...

Or in a few decades what's the new thing they will go after?

I just spoke with the good folks at Common Sense Media again, and they're in the CBS piece. Take-Two has made a huge miscalculation here, and I love it.

Watching the show now... waiting for the article in question. I'm going to record it so I can rewatch it calmly in case it's full of blatant mistruths.

BINGO! At the end of the article, they SHOW the parental controls. They INSIST that parents need to step in and take control. They NEVER claim that it is marketed towards children. They admitted kids do get their hands on things, but SHOW that it was not RATED for them, and it was not MEANT for them.

Victory goes towards common sense, not Jack.

Wasn't all that bad. A little heavy on Wii's side, but they did mention that there was no direct correlation. Was it as fair as it could be? No. Was it better than some people usually put it? Yes

@retrogamer88

I don't think we will have to worry to much about this sort of thing in the decades to come. As the next generation of people, with their less oppressive moral values come to power, things that would give the current leading generation a heart attack will not phase us. Our younger generations also have a lot more tolerance for the rights and beliefs of others. This is my hope at least.

Nothing blatant that I saw. He states that there is no scientific proof showing a connection between videogame violence and people acting it out. But he does state that there are studies showing young people becoming more violent or desensitized to violence.

This is the closest to a decent mass media take on the subject that I've seen.

The quote they got from Nintendo was PERFECT.

You know what the first game I'm going to get when the free wii I earned arrives?

Wii Sports. Just because it comes with the system.

The second game? Manhunt 2 - out of spite and enjoyment.

Third? Resident Evil 4

Then I move onto Zelda, Rayman, Metroid, etc, in some order I haven't decided yet.

The CBS images of the game were devastating. Great stuff.

That was probably the most balanced report I've seen on videogames on any network station. Though Couric did try and give the panicy "kids can still get them" line. Good on the other reporter for stressing parental involvement.

Is it any more violent than the first Manhunt? Especially considering the censoring of the kills that was done?

Katie Couric is still an idiot for her last line at the end the the piece about how she couldn't imagine anyone wanting to play it. I would have liked to throw back the same thing to her about certain movies that are even more disturbing about Manhunt and are more popular.

Hey, there was a mass suicide at One Logan Square in Philly this evening. It appears game related.

GP: One Logan Square being the location of (one of) Jack's (many) demons, the Blank Rome law firm...

He make joke, see?

ABC News had a brief report. Basically going after the Wii angle and British banning. Nothing about reports for or against child behavior.

The closest thing i have seen to an advertisement for the game (besides the game's website) was a contest. The top prize was a blood soaked nintendo wii signed by the rockstar cast (and a copy of manhunt 2). I have to admit though that the wii looked so cool that i wish they would sell it in stores so I could buy one (even if I never get a chance to own manhunt 2).

Oh and in order to ensure more free publicity Rockstar needs to only do one thing: Announce the possibility of a sequel.

I love the hypocrisy. Movies like Saw 4 and 1408 or more violent then Manhunt 2. I suggest we also ban violent horror films because they're is a risk some kid may shoulder surf you while you watch it and be "desensitized."

I understand, video games, movies, tv shows, they're all fake.

I will only accept government regulation of video games if, AND ONLY IF, the government also censors movies and television shows (even more then they do now).

Parents need to be involved. READ how to set the parental controls on their child's console, and more importantly UNDERSTAND THEY LIVE IN A FREE SOCIETY WHERE THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE WHO ENJOY DIFFERENT THINGS.
If we all found the same stuff repulsive, what would we be?

Dan Rather was much better. Its a shame a some bad information he investigated ended up forcing him to retire. Dan Rather understands neutrality in media, and cherished it. He didn't try to put his own twist on it, like what Katie Couric did tonight. The only reason why the mass media gets away with horse-shit like this is because they know we're not "loud enough" in our eyes.

If CBS did an news story about how violent Saw 4, The Hills have Eyes, or other Halloween B horror films are, I'm pretty sure Hollywood would be in a fuckin' uproar.

/rant off

"The CBS images of the game were devastating."

Yes, M rated games have violent imagery. R rated games have violent imagery. Why does this surprise you?

"Hey, there was a mass suicide at One Logan Square in Philly this evening. It appears game related."

Yeah. Good luck trying to prove a causal relationship in that situation Jack.

Is that REALLY Jack posting these three times?

They weren't in the CBS piece, the images weren't "devestating", and a mass suicide that isn't on any news site?

Are you trying distraction tactics now? Fail.

I think, considering Jacks last comments regarding a suicide, that his comments are in extremely poor taste.

RedMageThat's what I started to figure too. They seem to have trouble coming up with an effective scare tactic. At one point they referred to it as "online looting" which just sounds stupid.05/21/2012 - 3:34pm
E. Zachary KnightOf all the sucky suckiness that ever sucked. Lego Batman 2 will suffer from sucky retailer exclusive DLC. Suck! http://tinyurl.com/ckq67vg05/21/2012 - 3:30pm
E. Zachary KnightAs for Dodd, I think it is mostly that he realizes that calling copyright infringement "theft" is bad for PR and that they need to change tactics. Just like how they went from using "piracy" to using "theft."05/21/2012 - 1:48pm
E. Zachary KnightIan, I think in this case, the rating is well deserved. To get a good rating, I would assume that a company would have to release the game with no DRM, or at least fully disclosed DRM.05/21/2012 - 1:46pm
IanCLisa - what do companies have to do to get a good rating from that site?05/21/2012 - 12:54pm
