Tivo Alert: CBS Evening News with Katie Couric Looks at Manhunt 2 this Evening

October 30, 2007
sieberg.jpgCBS reporter Daniel Sieberg (left) has a Manhunt 2 feature planned for tonight's edition of the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.

Based on Sieberg's video preview, it sounds like a fairly comprehensive look at the uproar surrounding the game.

GP: Big thanks to reader Merc25 for the heads-up!

@Jabrwock

Sheer brilliance, not talking to Jack.
It was funny, nonetheless!
@ the one pretending to act like Jack

Stop doing that you idiot, I come to this site to see real post, including the real Jack Thompson comments to know what is going on.

Dennis has already banned people before for doing this nonsense.

When I come to this site, I do not want to get mixed up with who the real Jack Thompson is that is leaving a comment.
@Phoenix: We tried that on LJ... Jack went through over 50 of them, as I recall :P
@Radio Guy I meant there was way to much coverage of manhunt 2. Incase you thought something else.
I have this set on my DVR. ^_^
All I ask is that someone has a link for me tomorrow.
Heh. I've gotta admit, Rockstar's marketing strategy is pure brilliant. They hardly have to pay a dime to promote the game. Their opponents do such a wonderful job at whipping up the media that they get brand penetration and free promotion right there on the evening news. And all the while, they just make this thing even more desirable to kids who otherwise wouldn't have given the game a second look.
Oh Sweet Zombie Jesus, would these schmucks give up the bandwagon already?
this actually does sound like its going to be a relatively unbiased look at the issue. Anyone know the exact time its supposed to be on?
@ Distaria

Thanks for the great Futurama reference...and I agree, they really should drop it. I'm getting tired of people freaking out to "protect the children" when it's only their views and interests that are coming into play.
it's "25 To Life" all over again.

Unbiase, I doubt that Katie needs to up her ratings or she is out. They are already talking about replacing her. Since everyone is reporting it Iguess she wants to jion in. The game could be the worst in the world but all this hipe they must be laughing at t2
I'm shocked. He actually seemed to be toning it down, specifically mentioning it goes "a bit further than other games", and "there's no scientific evidence showing behavioral changes".

I might actually watch it.
Sounds like they talked to everyone but Jack. :D
I hope this isn't just more shock TV for the sake of increasing ratings... oh, wait... that's all TV is.

I find my increasing disdain for television media disturbing....

(Insert Star Wars joke here)
@Skylar

Never try that again. Ever.
@ Skylar

That is why I have limited my television intake to only certain shows that are fictional and advertise themselves as such, not these fictional shows that advertise themselves as nonfiction.
@ Phantom

I totally agree with you.
Bla bla bla manhunt 2
@ theshroomguy

Bla bla bla Bully. Look where that got them!

Anyone seen the sudden surge in school bullying over the past year?

I havent!
If this doesnt interfere with ecw i might watch it...Hey dennis what time is it on out here in cali do u know...or what time there since i think its like a 3 hour difference...

thanks
All TV programmes are Fubar.
It will be on at 7:00 PM eastern time in Baltimore, MD on WJZ-TV 13.

It is funny; I have not ever heard/seen an advertisement for MH2. the only place i heard anything about it (other than here) is when these news outlets mentions some kind of story they're doing about it.
@jer

I've seen a sidebar advert on Joystiq, but it's very non-descript, it's just an image of the cover and the name. But yes, mostly R* have hardly had to pay a dime for advertising this game, the Media and the Watchdogs have saved them a fortune, and will make them a fortune by the increased revenue all this controversy will gain them in sales.

The real irony is that the watchdogs are, apparently, too stupid to figure this out.
"It is funny; I have not ever heard/seen an advertisement for MH2. the only place i heard anything about it (other than here) is when these news outlets mentions some kind of story they’re doing about it."

Ditto. I wouldn't have known of this game's existence if not for the media frenzy. I just don't look for this type of game.
Rockstar Games knows how to optimize their marketing through hysteria from people who don't "get it", that much is true.
hasnt south park made a couric a unit of measure for crap?
Wow MH2 comes out and the world breaks in two.

Amazing.
Phantom:

You doubted for a moment they weren't doing this on purpose?
I wonder what game they will flip out over next, and when...

Or in a few decades what's the new thing they will go after?
I just spoke with the good folks at Common Sense Media again, and they're in the CBS piece. Take-Two has made a huge miscalculation here, and I love it.
Watching the show now... waiting for the article in question. I'm going to record it so I can rewatch it calmly in case it's full of blatant mistruths.
BINGO! At the end of the article, they SHOW the parental controls. They INSIST that parents need to step in and take control. They NEVER claim that it is marketed towards children. They admitted kids do get their hands on things, but SHOW that it was not RATED for them, and it was not MEANT for them.

Victory goes towards common sense, not Jack.
Wasn't all that bad. A little heavy on Wii's side, but they did mention that there was no direct correlation. Was it as fair as it could be? No. Was it better than some people usually put it? Yes
@retrogamer88

I don't think we will have to worry to much about this sort of thing in the decades to come. As the next generation of people, with their less oppressive moral values come to power, things that would give the current leading generation a heart attack will not phase us. Our younger generations also have a lot more tolerance for the rights and beliefs of others. This is my hope at least.
Nothing blatant that I saw. He states that there is no scientific proof showing a connection between videogame violence and people acting it out. But he does state that there are studies showing young people becoming more violent or desensitized to violence.

This is the closest to a decent mass media take on the subject that I've seen.
The quote they got from Nintendo was PERFECT.
You know what the first game I'm going to get when the free wii I earned arrives?

Wii Sports. Just because it comes with the system.

The second game? Manhunt 2 - out of spite and enjoyment.

Third? Resident Evil 4

Then I move onto Zelda, Rayman, Metroid, etc, in some order I haven't decided yet.
The CBS images of the game were devastating. Great stuff.
That was probably the most balanced report I've seen on videogames on any network station. Though Couric did try and give the panicy "kids can still get them" line. Good on the other reporter for stressing parental involvement.
Is it any more violent than the first Manhunt? Especially considering the censoring of the kills that was done?

Katie Couric is still an idiot for her last line at the end the the piece about how she couldn't imagine anyone wanting to play it. I would have liked to throw back the same thing to her about certain movies that are even more disturbing about Manhunt and are more popular.
Hey, there was a mass suicide at One Logan Square in Philly this evening. It appears game related.

GP: One Logan Square being the location of (one of) Jack's (many) demons, the Blank Rome law firm...

He make joke, see?
ABC News had a brief report. Basically going after the Wii angle and British banning. Nothing about reports for or against child behavior.
The closest thing i have seen to an advertisement for the game (besides the game's website) was a contest. The top prize was a blood soaked nintendo wii signed by the rockstar cast (and a copy of manhunt 2). I have to admit though that the wii looked so cool that i wish they would sell it in stores so I could buy one (even if I never get a chance to own manhunt 2).

Oh and in order to ensure more free publicity Rockstar needs to only do one thing: Announce the possibility of a sequel.
I love the hypocrisy. Movies like Saw 4 and 1408 or more violent then Manhunt 2. I suggest we also ban violent horror films because they're is a risk some kid may shoulder surf you while you watch it and be "desensitized."

I understand, video games, movies, tv shows, they're all fake.

I will only accept government regulation of video games if, AND ONLY IF, the government also censors movies and television shows (even more then they do now).

Parents need to be involved. READ how to set the parental controls on their child's console, and more importantly UNDERSTAND THEY LIVE IN A FREE SOCIETY WHERE THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE WHO ENJOY DIFFERENT THINGS.
If we all found the same stuff repulsive, what would we be?

Dan Rather was much better. Its a shame a some bad information he investigated ended up forcing him to retire. Dan Rather understands neutrality in media, and cherished it. He didn't try to put his own twist on it, like what Katie Couric did tonight. The only reason why the mass media gets away with horse-shit like this is because they know we're not "loud enough" in our eyes.

If CBS did an news story about how violent Saw 4, The Hills have Eyes, or other Halloween B horror films are, I'm pretty sure Hollywood would be in a fuckin' uproar.

/rant off
"The CBS images of the game were devastating."

Yes, M rated games have violent imagery. R rated games have violent imagery. Why does this surprise you?

"Hey, there was a mass suicide at One Logan Square in Philly this evening. It appears game related."

Yeah. Good luck trying to prove a causal relationship in that situation Jack.
Is that REALLY Jack posting these three times?

They weren't in the CBS piece, the images weren't "devestating", and a mass suicide that isn't on any news site?

Are you trying distraction tactics now? Fail.
I think, considering Jacks last comments regarding a suicide, that his comments are in extremely poor taste.
Oh, I get it. Jack-sarcasm. Jack, you fail at humor as well.

The CBS article pointed out just how violent the game was, but did NOT point out if video game violence had a definite effect on people.

And then it went on to show that it was rated for 17 and older, and how to set your video game system so your kids can't play it in case they get their hands on it anyway.

Did you turn it off while you were "winning"? Oh wait, you never were -- did you turn it off while you "thought" you were winning?
@ Jack "Attention Whore" Thompson

All this attention on one game. Even if it was banned, it's still one game. That's only a dent in the whole gaming scene. So go off whoring to somebody else.
also @ Jack "Attention Whore" Thompson

You point out one suicide over how many that goes on everyday?
Anyone youtubed it?

Today we celebrate the release of the game, I wonder what life is like at certain residence in Boca Raton, Florida? It's a bitch being helpless these days!!!
Let's see:

-Manhunt 2 came out to less than stellar reviews.
-Manhunt 2 will lose sales because it's censored.
-Manhunt 2 will make lots and lots more money than it would have had it not garnered such widespread criticism and controversy.

At the end of the day:

-The game came out.
-Take-Two made money.
-CSM, Yee, and others recommend parents don't buy the game for an audience it's not intended for or marketed to.

Andrew Eisen
Well, I pointed this out elsewhere that I intentionally didn't make this joke previously, but since you're trying again:

John Bruce,
RE: Your attempt at humor...

Don't quit your day job.
Oh, wait, at the rate you're going, you won't have that day job much longer.
So, yeah, you're goona need new career options.

Meh, reminds of the 'Bloody Mary' episode of South Park which the Catholic Church tried to stop here in NZL. All they did was increase the number of people that watched it by six times.

As for Jackyboy, I'm surprised he posted three times here before anyone noticed. Or were you ignoring him... *shrugs* doesn't matter.
Goodrobotsrus, thompson's remarks are ALWAYS in poor taste and tactless.

I didn't get to see it but it from what I've read here (besides thompson's diarrhea of the keyboard) it looks like it was a decent piece.
That's not Thompson.

Andrew Eisen
Okay, either that last one WASN'T Thompson, or if it was, I think it should be removed for obvious reasons.
Oh wait should've noticed there were two says in the name. Still he does often come out looking like a bisexual pedophile so my comment still stands.
Faker.
Jack, you asking who wants to join you in the shower? Kinky... ;)

Anyone go a youtube link for those of us on the other side of the pond?

In the mean time, I wonder what other murder simulators I could play... The Sims maybe...
Not Jack, note the name:

Jack Thomspon Attorney Says Says, someone basically copied and pasted the name from his last post and forgot that 'Says' is added automatically.
Regarding one of john bruce thompson's post
it seemed like he was watching the whole thing without sound. He should just retire.
@ Skylar

I have a bad fealing about this.
Cue a certain someone suing CBS for making video footage of M-rated gameplay publically available to teh childrenz.
@jack thompson, attorney
"Take-Two has made a huge miscalculation here"

can't be any worse than Common Sense Media, who admitted to criminal activity regarding pirated software.
Wow, so many Manhunt2 stories in a row, and for just today.

Let me guess who is spending most of their time here reloading the..

Take-Two has made a huge miscalculation here, and I love it.
Oh, hi Jack, enjoying the mental masturbation over the not-that-damaging coverage?

I say the only "miscalculation" is by the likes of you and Campaign for a Commercial-free Childhood who "buy" into the "Rockstar is targeting this game to kids" bull., and CSM throwing around FUD. And go ahead brining up the lame credit-card argument, when other online retailers sell stuff like moviesthat is even worse in terms of content and ratings enforcement..

While I don't quite agree with all of what he says, at least Mr. Yee sort of gets it.

As for me, this last minute media blitz probably will probably make things worse for those who oppose this game. With the hypocrites screaming about it today & probably with tomorrow's release, the whole thing will probably be quickly forgotten by Nov 1st.
"GP: One Logan Square being the location of (one of) Jack’s (many) demons, the Blank Rome law firm…

He make joke, see?"

So did they kill themselves with platinum knives off all the money they are going to rake in after Jack gave them so much free publicity?

And really why would they kill themselves? They made a game which is going to sell better than it otherwise should have and they have a constitutional right to do so. The only thing that is committing suicide here is Jack upon his career.
Jack Thompson just make me laugh A suicide must be game related. Back in 1995 a friend of the victim played pong and while said victim watched. It must be the course. The fact that the victim was depressed had nothing to do with it. lmao
See GP's update, Jack was trying to make a joke about the Blank Rome law firm. Seems the wrong thread for it though, if infact this report was more positive than many of the Manhunt 2 stories. It was also in bad taste in my view.
Here's the challenge I make to Jack Thompson and anyone who is boycotting this game: find me one adult who thinks that the game is suitable for children.

I bet you cannot - even the adults who want to play this game, who think it should be released in its full uncut glory, know beyond the shadow of a doubt that it is a game for ADULTS, and should not be put in the hands of children.

Thus, I believe the problem here is with the companies that are against having AO games. There's no problem with movies that are given adult ratings, but games are provoking an issue. Ridiculous.
Here's a link to the comments section of CBS news' that's covers the game. You will need to register to give a comment.

This isn't the real Jack Thompson commenting in this article.
Oh, and to add, the preview says they talked to video game industry. Does that include the small quote from nintendo? I hardly consider that a fair counterpoint. I also didn't see any interviews from R* or T2 about this game like what it said in the preview. I'd like to know what was removed.
“The CBS images of the game were devastating.”

And how are you to know if those aren't just images they pulled from the interweb of the unedited version that were released several months ago? Hm?

Oh yeah. You can't prove that.
it's on their website now and it didn't seem that bad. they were somewhat critical of manhunt2 but not games as a whole.
Jack, the game is upon us. There's really nothing you can do but whine and moan about it. No matter WHAT they show, it's pretty much a done deal. You yourself are the best PR Rockstar could have possible asked for.
I just saw it, I didn't find it sensationist at all. In fact they took time at then to point out that the game is rated mature and that the consoles have parental features so that if little jimmy got ahold of it he wouldn't be able to play it (no they did not actually use the term little jimmy).
Oh and yes jack they were in the piece, they didn't get a lot of speaking time though (in fact they actually just used an old clip, they didn't interview the guy), and the time they did spend was just saying that the game was appaling (not that it should be banned from the public).
The fake Jacks are reminding me of the fake Jack the Ripper letters during the Whitechapel investigation.
Wait a minute:
Jack the Ripper-19th century serial killer with an unnatural obsession with sex and violence
Jack Thompson-20 to 21st century lawyer who engages in unethical practices who has an unatural obsession with sex and violence
Jack Thompson, I must find out, what do you think of prostitutes?
Continuing with the Whitechapel (Jack the Ripper) comparison I think the two have a lot in coming other than the crazy Jack.
How: Both have been completely blown out of proportion
Whitechapel: Media frenzy and public fasination about the murder of five prostitutes in a London slum at time when the murder of such people was fairly common.
Manhunt: Media frenzy and public fasination over a violent game that probably less than 98% of U.S. population will play at time in which violent media is common, tolerated, and relished in movies, television, books, and just about everything but video games.
Just a random thought on my part though
Just watched it.

It was actually full of positive facts about the game. They seemed to know what they were talking about.
"Researchers found no direct scientific link between violent video games and carrying out those acts in real life"

Enough said, thank you CBS...
Was that "notebook" thing the entire news item? Cause I found the preview more informative than that. More balanced, too.
I laugh at you people that actually believe Jack posts here
@jack

You're right nobody named jack posts here. Instead somebody named John posts here, although his nickname is jack.

Oh and are you saying that you aren't jack thompson and are instead an imposter? I guess I'm going to have contact the real jack down in miami, boy is he going to be mad that you single handedly made him look like a fool. Or is it that you're lying (or a fake jack)?
I wouldn't believe it either but I've been watching this website for years, and really everything he has done (on the website) in the past 6 monthes has paled to what he has done before.
I'm fairly certain the real Jack posts here quite often. However, the fact that we now have posts that either are Jack claiming it's not him, or someone using the posting name, draws quite a number of posts into question.

All the more reason to just ignore any posts with his name, real or fake, and continue conversations without having to give him any more attention.

Unless Dennis marks a post as "This is really from Jack", I will no longer respond to it from this point forwards... as I hope others will do as well. Of course, I can't control others, just like Jack can't control the videogame industry.
jack thompson, attorney Says:

IT IS NOT JACK THOMPSON ITS MY MATE KIDDING USE ALL ON HES AN ASSHOLE
So...how long does everyone here think the Manhunt 2 media fear-mongering will last? I have a feeling that, now that the game is out, the fervor will die down pretty quickly.

I give it 2 weeks tops.
@JT

I just spoke with the good folks at Common Sense Media again, and they’re in the CBS piece. Take-Two has made a huge miscalculation here, and I love it.

They miscalculated how much advertising money they saved by suckering CBS into advertising it for them? Complete with feigned "outrage"? You couldn't BUY that.

As Andrew said, the game was lackluster. It's sales would have tanked had it not been for all the moral outrage. Now it's a mediocre success. TT should send you a thank you card for making this title worth it's weight in gold.

The CBS images of the game were devastating. Great stuff.

Yep, scads more money saved. They got a whole news segment when everyone was riveted to the screen. And they didn't have to fork out for a single second of it.

Hey, there was a mass suicide at One Logan Square in Philly this evening. It appears game related.

And then they all hit the reset button, and laughed all the way to the bank. :)

@bakaohki

If Dennis replies to it with a GP: tag in the comment itself, it was from the REAL JT.
@Jabrwock

Except someone could fake that. Though they can't edit posts, so if you see the post first wihtout it, then with it, you can know it's real.
Like I said before fake JT posts are just like the fake Jack the Ripper letters, no possible reason for them and done by twisted, black-souled people.
I sometimes wish that registered accounts were a requirement of posting. It's difficult at times to distinguish between farcical comments and the legitimate Thompson, moreso because of the latter's inherent erratic behavior.
I never thought the day would come that I would actually defend Thompson...but alas...here it is. Stop pretending to be Thompson! It makes you a bigger fool than he is.

@ the real Jack Thompson...
I still hate you...but swatting mosquitoes comes before picking off the gum on my shoes.
All in favor of registered accounts? Say "Aye".....Aye
I think ABC is gonna have a segment on this, too, if they haven't already (blame my lack of watching TV if they have).

The comments left regarding Manhunt 2 as "the most violent video game ever" are actually quite amusing.
Registered accounts are fine by my book but we might need several anonymous accounts for the likes of us.
I always laugh when people like Katie Cuoric say they wouldn't play whatever contraversial game they happen to be talking about at the time. It makes we want to have them list for the public all the video games they have ever or would ever play.
Re Anonymous
we might need several anonymous accounts for the likes of us.

Well, I think some blog systems allow you to log in, and then you can choose to post anonymously. But...

Re Hannah
I remember that, for someone who hates blogs he sure went through all that trouble to make 50(+?) LiveJournal accounts.

Yeah, so all trolls need to do is re-register accounts calming to be him. I say people should do what I have been doing, just take such comments with a grain of salt and assume it isn't him.
I think that Nintendo should have a Grand Theft Auto game for the wii.

It would be awesome if you could perfectly use the motion controller to swing weapons, shoot, pull people out of their vehicle and so on.

I just hope that they take that step to show that they are not afraid of people like Jack Thompson, and that they would have whatever they feel like having on their system for a variety of people.
Having now actually played a little bit (less than ten minutes) of Manhunt 2 I can say I was underwhelmed by the "shocking violence" because all the uhh "effects" that go on during the stealth kills really does make it rather hard to follow. Granted I only did two but you really couldn't make out a whole lot on the two I did. It's got nothing on the first, uncensored Manhunt. Well, I don't remember Manhunt having one guy urinate on you from his cell and then the next guy throwing feces so I guess it's got that? O_o
What I would like to know is where is the uproar over Saw IV?
@MR.B

I just read the comments and some of them there, especially the convenient first one shilling David "lying bastard" Grossman is just too much....
@Jabrwock:

There was another fake Jack post (besides the one that's still left) at the time I posted my comment. Nice to see at least one was removed.
@The newbies who thinks that the real Jack doesn't post here.

Did Dennis also fake the many many answering machine messages left by jack regarding Gamepolitics?
*Jack Thompson impersonation*

"Someone committed murder/suicide! It must eb the videogames fault!"

Dear lord, Jack you do realize murder, death and suicide have all been in existence for a lot longer then videogames right?
