Conservative Nintendo DS-Bashing Site Revealed as Ultra-subtle Parody

November 7, 2007
Recently GamePolitics reported on Blogs for Brownback, a conservative political site which referred to the Nintendo DS as an "abomination".

The site was ostensibly created to support the now-defunct presidential campaign of Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS), himself a frequent critic of the video game industry and sponsor of the Truth in Video Game Rating Act, a piece of legislation currently before the Senate.

At the time of our report, however, certain subtle clues (like the image at left) caused GP to speculate that B4B was a clever hoax.

Speculate no more.

The Raw Story outs the site as the ultimate in low-key satire. In fact, B4B is flying so far below the radar that it is has fooled the likes of MSNBC's Keith Olbermann, the liberal Center for American Progress and the conservative strategist Patrick Ruffini. Atlantic Monthly editor Andrew Sullivan, another victim, told Raw Story:
Yes, they suckered me at first. [B4B's parody is] sublime. Colbert-level.

Even Kotaku was apparently taken in as it picked up GP's Nintendo DS story. As for B4B, editor Sam Brown holds fast to the idea that it is genuine:
To our critics I say this: B4B is real. We're here. Deal with it. And please try to keep your head from exploding. B4B is not responsible for any mental anguish you may suffer when exposed to the truth.

And Brown cited typical feedback from a reader:
Congratulations, this is brilliant satire and I love it but if it's not I really hate it and you should just die.

Then read better or become a /b/rother. They are Numerous.

But the DS is an abomination.

It has two screens!

TWO!!

Whats wrong with just one screen! People cant even keep up with the action on one screen and the DS has TWO!!!

It was an obvious rip-off, as I have been saying on whatever the last newstory it was you posted about it.

It really only shows that people are gullible in the fact that they go "WHAT THE , THIS LOOKS LIKE A PARODY, BUT IT IS DISGUISED SO POORLY IT MUST ACTUALLY BE REAL! FACT IS STRANGER THAN FICTION, AFTER ALL, AS MY DEAR AUNT SALLY USED TO TELL ME."

"Ultra- sublte"? .....Er.... I thought it was pretty obvious.... (Gun cookies FTW XD !)

2 lovely
well... you've seen some of the anti-games people around... its a bit more extreme than some we've seen, but its not completely unbelievable.
well, the DS story about the paedophile using picto chat WAS completely unbelievable... heh, lol.

Congratulations, this is brilliant satire and I love it but if it’s not I really hate it and you should just die.

I think that about covers my opinion of the site.

With the chan mêmes?

Wiskey Tango Foxtrot.

The reason people don't get that this site is "satire" is two-fold. 1.) It doesn't mention anywhere that it's satire. Satirical sites / articles normally contain disclaimers. 2.) It isn't funny. Generally speaking, satire involves humor of some type. Merely saying something outrageous doesn't automatically equal funny. (Note to Family Guy fanatics: simply making pop culture references doesn't automatically equal funny, either.) Whenever some conservative dipshit says something totally over the line, they always say they were just making a joke. Yeah, what the hell's wrong with you for not having a sense of humor? And if nobody objects to their slime-filled diatribe, we move the national conversation over to the right just a leetle bit more. Mission accomplished. I'm sick of this nonsense and these people should be destroyed.

i think this guy should be lit on fire then sent to a extreme burn ward in which when they bathe you you are blasted with scalding water on your intense burns and i hear its one of the most panful ways to die

i got that from a TV show Law and Order SVU not a video game

thank you Jesus

id rather blow him up with the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioc

Amen

I the beginning, I was practically sure it was a hoax, and then I had the confirmation when they slammed "Pac Man" for the rise of drug problems.

there was a good chance it was a parody, but honestly, how many times has this happened on the internet? Idiot says something way over the line and way past belief, and everyone gets angry or just simply stunned, then he pulls back with the, "I was just joking! see? Ha ha ha?"

To paraphrase Krusty the Klown,

"It's a JOKE. Whenever you give me that look, it means it's a joke."

It's the easiest way to excuse yourself from the brunt of your idiocy-based hate.

I viewed the site as an IQ test. As in anyone with more IQ than a rutabaga would see it as satire. Apparently Kotaku still managed to fail it.

There's not a "good chance" it was parody or satire. I've seen more subtle material from 4chan.

GP people already debuked it in the previous post about those guys.

And the 4chan mêmes were the biggest giveaway ever. It was a joke because it was incredibly joke-like. It had material which called it a joke.

And I think there was a disclaimer of sorts somewhere.

I thought it was a joke when I first saw it, I ever left a comment on the DS article congratulating them on a brilliant piece of parody!

I thought it was obvious, then again some people got fooled by it because they get to meet these real honest to goodness rightwing nut jobs!

@C'tri
I suppose that if you JUST read the DS article, than the fact that this site is parody wouldn't be obvious. (I understand that as our interactions with John Bruce prove, it's about the same level of loony!)

However, if you read the other entries, it becomes more and more evident. I suppose for anime fans, it even becomes more obvious with the 4chan meme's and the Higurashi comments.

"I watched a random episode to see if anyone died. I WIN." (Something like that, he was referring to the last episode of "The Massacre Chapter" *laughs* .)

Can someone post a link to the 4chan meme article that you're talking about? I can't seem to find it....

It's kinda bad when a political parody doesn't look much different than what it's making fun of.

Personally, I figured it was a parody from the start, but I do find it funny that Kotaku seems to have fallen for it.

As for the 4chan...What happens on 4chan needs to stay there. Sorry, but the pool's closed.

...damn it!

I knew it was satire. This is the biggest crock of crap I have ever heard, including all that stuff the Weekly World News used to come up with.

Felix
but I do find it funny that Kotaku seems to have fallen for it.
I am actually in no way surprised by that, they sure are a slowpoke on catching things like that and www.mavav.org(I think I remember them bringing it back up, and taking it seriously when the hoax had been proven to be a hoax-related class assignment).

And they frequently act like they know certain things they are reporting, I am probably not the only one who drops my face in my palms while asking "why do they even try?"

What a bunch of hogwash. Why can't you get it through your thick skulls? B4B is not parody, liberal lies to the contrary. If it helps you sleep at night though, believe whatever you like. Until you're saved, you're all going to Hell anyway.

when I first saw this article, I was all WTF.

Now it is massive win.

Brownback sucked.

Actually I think it's your spelling, idiot.

Greg, respectfully, it was always a massive win. A win for the truth.

Baramos, you're a moron. Let me introduce you to logic, logic meet Baramos. I hope you get to know each other someday. Doubtful, though.

That site makes me laugh. Whether real or not I think it's downright hilarious.

Andrew EisenI still say the particular word or phrase the MPAA uses to describe what it's fighting against is the least of its problems.05/22/2012 - 1:12pm

Michael ChandraWeird, I can still visit piratebay. Wonder if Google DNS is related to that, or I simply have an exotic ISP?05/22/2012 - 9:03am

ddrfr33k@Zip: Excellent game. It's a trip.05/21/2012 - 7:09pm
Lisa PhamIanC - if you read/looked at the report (PDF and written) then you'd see where they failed and why. Some games have come close to passing and some have passed. The list of games evaluated. http://www.reclaimyourgame.com/content.php/18-RYG-Evaluations05/21/2012 - 5:49pm

ZippyDSMleeBought new guitar...trying to find a nice DDR3/mobo combo under 200$ sicne I need new ram thats 100$....fun times..... picked up shadows of the damned tho!!05/21/2012 - 4:56pm
E. Zachary KnightYeah, that's how I feel about retail exclusive DLC too. ;)05/21/2012 - 3:37pm
RedMageThat's what I started to figure too. They seem to have trouble coming up with an effective scare tactic. At one point they referred to it as "online looting" which just sounds stupid.05/21/2012 - 3:34pm
E. Zachary KnightOf all the sucky suckiness that ever sucked. Lego Batman 2 will suffer from sucky retailer exclusive DLC. Suck! http://tinyurl.com/ckq67vg05/21/2012 - 3:30pm
E. Zachary KnightAs for Dodd, I think it is mostly that he realizes that calling copyright infringement "theft" is bad for PR and that they need to change tactics. Just like how they went from using "piracy" to using "theft."05/21/2012 - 1:48pm
E. Zachary KnightIan, I think in this case, the rating is well deserved. To get a good rating, I would assume that a company would have to release the game with no DRM, or at least fully disclosed DRM.05/21/2012 - 1:46pm
IanCLisa - what do companies have to do to get a good rating from that site?05/21/2012 - 12:54pm
