GP Readers Ain't Dumb

GP Readers Ain't Dumb

December 6, 2007
You read GamePolitics, ipso facto, you are intelligent.

We always knew it. Now Critics Rant validates your braininess with an online Blog Readability TestGamePolitics scores at the post-graduate level.

GP learned about the test via Susan Arendt's report on Wired Game|Life. As Arendt reports, here's how some other popular sites fared:
Kotaku: Junior High
Destructoid: Junior High
PlayStation.blog: Junior High
GayGamer: Junior High
MTV Multiplayer: Junior High
Game|Life: High School
Slashdot: High School
Joystiq: College
Level Up: Genius
Ars Technica: Genius

You can enter any site you like to check on its readability level.

GP: It looks as if the ratings are rather sensitive to changing content. Joystiq, for example, has jumped up to "genius" today...

I bet Joystiq would be higher if they didn't spam my inbox that one time.
Joystiq regulars, you know what I mean.
Yeah, we kick ass.

ROFL JEANIOUS LOLZ
No explanation of criteria whatsoever. Could be a punctuation and dictionary check, for all we know.
Meh, we may be college level readers but we sure can't beat out chimps! Those damn dirty apes! ;)

Just tried it, Joystiq is actually Genuis level, as I wanted to see what College level it was (postgrad or undergrad) so GP got it wrong.

At least we are still smart.
God, my own blog is "Elementary Level". *cries*
@Scotland, I think it checks the front page, so it depends on the headline story, Kotaku is Elementary School today....
Heh. For comparison:
google.com - genius (there's something to be said for simplicity)
cnn.com - high school
newyorktimes.com - junior high
Careful with this... the Blog Readability thing may well be little more than advertising cash scam thingy.

get_a_cash_advance_for_my_blogs_reading_level_im_not_sure_i_understand

I'll let you decide.
How the heck do they measure these things?
I imagine it scans the content of the blog and runs a word by word comparison with a dictionary. Every word is given a value. Big words would be a higher value than say slang. The higher the total value, the higher the level of reading required.

For the record, I just checked Kotaku.com, it's "Elementary School"
I could've sworn "ain't" wasn't a real word. Perhaps I should recheck the dictionary.
Either way, I take some comfort to this news that most people type fairly properly to get their point across here. At least I know the comments won't be trash.
We are so smart! We are so smart! S-M-R-T!
I is teh smart. Learn me a book.

So is the next news item going to be which spice girl GP is?
GP got the boost because Jack Thompson hasn't been posting for a little while now. He was easily one of the more unintelligent posters this site has ever seen and it only drug the site down with his participation.
My blog, which is almost entirely in the French language, received a "high school" level. Amazing that this tool knows how to analyse languages other than English.

Just for fun, i ran it against the front page at http://www.xinhuanet.com/ . Apparently, any little elementary school student could read that site.

Right.
That page rates itself at a genius level. I doubt the whole thing now.
I searched Penny Arcade, and apparently, Tycho's deep rants are at an "Elementary" level.

Yeah, this is bullshit.
Penny Arcade is mostly about Child's Play and Merch today but it deserves a PG-13 Warning
My blog got a High School Level. I need to work on it.

@ Dan

That is an interesting find. Thanks for the link. I don't think anyone here was taking the thing seriously. Jystiq college level? Come on!
It rates Smash Bros. Dojo as "genius" level.

Forgive me for not trusting the results it offers.
Slashdot got high school level... except for content I would rate them junior high man the comments made me stop reading slashdot.
Har har.

Even my insane ravings contain an obscene amount of complexity and intricate theory.
Dang, I'm only at college undergrad right now. You win this round, GP!
www.playboy.com - junion high
www.hustler.com - high school
www.penthouse.com - college (undergrad)

who knew, people really do read penthouse for the articles!
Our former troll proven wrong, AGAIN!!!

No wonder the sun shines today.
My blog got junior high. Meh.
Ha, for those of you interested, this comment page has scored an "Elementary School" level. So, I am pretty positive that this is nothing more then a spelling and grammar check.

'Course, since lots of us are posting jokes in the form of "i r stoopid" that probably doesn't help too much. =D
Slashdot seemed pretty accurate, and not because of the headlines.
i checked gametwat.com against this and it said they were at elementary level. maybe there is a little order in the universe afterall. :P
@ tallimar

Considering GameTwat is no longer being run, I don't think that it would get anything over elementary.
Makes you wonder then, if JT readings Game Politics religiously because of his unhealthy obsession with Dennis, then why is he so bloody stupid sometimes?
wes so smarts wes no evan neds edit button

@GryphonOsiris

Odd with JBT being a regular troll here (or at least when not banned) I am surprised we ranked so high. Probably could have done better.

Besides you can't fix stupid.
Why am I not surprised about Destructoid and Kotaku's rating......
Umm. You guys DO realise that a low score is better, right?

The more intelligent you need to be to read it, the less readable it is. Basically, according to this score, anyone who hasn't gone through postgrad should find that reading this blog is a chore.

It's scored based on the length and structure of sentences, the complexity of words, etc.
@EZK
... that didnt last long, guess i shouldnt be surprised though considering the kind of site it was.
Goldtree: I would've assumed the opposite, at least where reading something slightly over one's reading level was concerned. Obviously an elementary school kid would have trouble reading something written at a college level, but an undergrad reading a postgrad piece would probably be able to understand it - in fact, they would understand it better, thanks to the higher level of discourse. On the flip side, reading something well under your comprehension level could be pretty boring, like putting down Dubliners and picking up Green Eggs & Ham (something I've been known to do on the weekends.)

Also, having had my interest piqued by those of you wondering whether JT's presence had any effect, I went back to this nicely bloated entry, 200 comments including four by the man himself. Result: junior high. Still begs the question if it's actually him or just the effect he has on others, but I'll leave that one to the punters.
@jon kanders

Nice find.
My LiveJournal got elementary school and my Twitter got Jr. high.
@Simon Roberts
Neil Gaiman had something similar to this on his blog a while ago, and he was proud to get something around a Grade 5 reading level. (That one had individual year levels.) The reading level test used here doesn't seem to be quite as deep as that one though.

It's not a matter of content. It's the writing itself. Have you ever read a piece where there's a sentence that just goes on and on for line after line of text, using conjunctions where full stops would do nicely, adding prepositional phrases, and throwing in foreign or obscure words like "masticate" when simple ones like "eat" would do perfectly fine?

It's sentences like this:
"The hubbub began yesterday when public relations firm Hill & Knowlton released the results of a survey which indicated that 60% of U.S. consumers favored government regulation of violent and/or M-rated games."

Which is fine for a news article, but it's still no badge of pride -- like it's somehow better if some people find it hard to read.
E=mc2
Destructoid scored lower (grade-wise) than I thought. Maybe it's an attraction to young-uns that many of their stories sound like the funny ramblings of a drunken uncle (in a good way).
This comments page is rated junir high. So yeah I doubt this thing is really serious.
stopkill.com got 'genius'

... I think its beyond broken. FAIL.
My own blog got "Genius"....I think it's just a spell check.
Probably just uses average word length or something.
Er, my facebook url got genius level.

this thing is crap.

JDKJ: Which could be explained by both (a) and (b).
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:56am
Austin_Lewis: JDKJ: You forgot C) the fact that, for some reason, every time he did something that would suggest he shouldn't be in the military, let alone an officer, higher ups ignored it or let it slide.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:51am
JDKJ: Part of the problem is, I believe, that (a) the Army had a lot of time and money already invested in him and which they were unwilling to simply write-off and (b) an increasing need for the type of skills and services he provided.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:48am
JDKJ: And that even if he was begging not to get cut loose, he was apparently a real good candidate for being cut loose, anyway.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:11am
JDKJ: @chada: And while Kennedy once noted that there's usually more than enough blame for everyone to get a slice, the possibility that the Army was unwilling to cut loose someone who was asking to get cut loose could be a factor.

ZippyDSMlee: *noms on his feet*..nomnomnomnom*droooll* ...wuuutttttt uuu looking at?

JDKJ: I'm no psychologist, but I'm told that crazy people have a tendency to do crazy things.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:03am
chadachada321: Whoops, was out of the convo for awhile. I do wonder what type of ammo he used etc, but the real issue is WHY he did it, not HOW
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:56am
JDKJ: But if it turns out that they actually did, they'll have Hell to pay.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:45am
JDKJ: And I'd tend to rule out the possibilty of FN Herstal supplying restricted ammunition to someone merely because they're ordering it from a military base.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:37am
JDKJ: I know you don't leave your gated community and get around much in dark alleys, so you may be surprised to learn that there's this thing called "the black market" where, if you've got enough money, ain't too much of anything which can't be bought.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:36am
Austin_Lewis: Or, maybe he or someone else at the base ordered the SS190 from FN Herstal.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:32am
Austin_Lewis: the hands of private owners. They run about 300 dollars minimum for a box of 50, and boxes of AP 5.7 are extremely scarce, mainly residing in the hands of Class III stores or individuals who for one reason or another got a demo box of it.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:30am
Austin_Lewis: There are other firearms that fire the 5.7. However, I too would like to know where he got the ammo and what kind was used. Maybe Hasan, planning not to live through this, went out and bought one the boxes of SS190 that are floating around in
Posted 11/07/09 at 08:44am
JDKJ: And it isn't yet clear what type of ammunition Hasan used. It's strange that he purchased a gun but didn't purchase ammunition for it at the same place and time. Especially because the calibre required is peculiar to the actual gun.
