TheStreet.com Looks at the Big Titles of 2008

January 1, 2008 -
Grand Theft Auto IV... Spore... Little Big Planet... Saints Row 2... Wii Fit... Metal Gear Solid 4...

TheStreet.com's Priya Ganapti looks into her crystal ball and ranks these six games among key titles for 2008. Ganapati writes:
The stakes are huge. THQ... is pinning its hopes on the release of Saints Row 2. And Nintendo hopes its new fitness game will provide a successful template for its best-selling console.

Of GTV IV, Ganapati said:
The release of Grand Theft Auto IV, which was moved from October this year to early 2008, could change [Take Two's] fortunes...

Strong initial sales of Grand Theft Auto IV... could bring back the feel-good factor around Take-Two and offer the stock a short-term pop.

PC gamers have been drooling over Will Wright's Spore since 2005, but the game is not a sure thing, according to Ganapati, who quotes analyst Jesse Divnich of The simExchange:
Spore will have to prove itself in the market unlike a Halo which will sell well irrespective of what the reviews are.

Of Wii Fit and the much-discussed Wii Balance Board peripheral, Divnich told Ganapati:
Nintendo does some very creative stuff that's a complete hit or miss. The Wii Fit is being targeted towards the whole family so it will be interesting to see how the U.S. market takes to it.

A pair of PS3 exclusives (and how often do you hear those words used together in the same sentence?) may hold the key to the future of Sony's console. Joystiq's Kyle Orland spoke of Metal Gear Solid 4 and Little Big Planet:
2008 is going to be the year when PS3 proves itself or falls down. So far they have just about kept themselves in the game but next year is when they have to go for the kill. With releases such as Metal Gear Solid IV Sony has given itself a chance at success.

With Little Big Planet, the idea was not to put big developer resources into it. You are counting on the people playing it to make the game good and that's a trend we could see more of in 2008.

As long as MGS4 plays as well as it looks, it should easily amount to a couple of million units sold for Sony. All things aside, if the PS3 can't up the ante for 2008, it's going to be a very rough year.

Apparantly MGS4 is supposed to be AAAA already. Apparantly.

Anyway, i'm personally looking forward (A long way forward) to Fallout 3. Bethesda are good at making Epic Win stuff.

I'll be waiting for Super Smash Bros. Brawl myself.

2007 was such a good year for games, i'm pretty sure most of 2008 is going to be spent catching up for me.

Hopefully there will be plenty of JRPGs for me to play this year. I'm also looking foward to the new Advance Wars.

Where's super smash brothers brawl? That's the game I'm getting a Wii for.

Surprised that theres no mention of Ghostbusters on that list, thats what I'm looking forward to myself. I'll also be looking into the Spore as well, if it runs on this PC.

I have extreme doubts about Bethesda making a Fallout game. I know they are making a game they're calling Fallout 3, but I have a suspicion it won't possess the writing that I loved the series for.

I have a problem with Bethesda and it is the "Y/N" quest system. Quests are either now or later.

Anyway, if they manage to turn this one in some pure winnage, it should be fun.

@ Brandon

I agree, looking forward to both of those titles myself.

I'm confused how I don't see Brawl, Mario Kart or FFXIII on this list.

Ummmm, what the fuck? Does this gal know ANYTHING about the gaming world?

The top titles next year are Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Final Fantasy 13, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Spore.

@Merc25

Yes, that's basically what i'm waiting for. A game called Fallout 3. The writing will be good, after all this IS Bethesda. It just won't be the stuff you loved from the last.. Four games?

BlackIce, Dragunov Marksman

Theres only 2 fallout games and Oblivion is the pits as far as TES goes.

So FO3 has a good 60% chance to fail.

PS: at least bioshock is now being ignored like the trash it is.

@Zippy:

Oblivion and Bioshock are widely regarded as two of the best games ever made. Care to elaborate on those sentiments?

MGS4 and KZ2 will be the big PS3 games

As far as Nintendo and their plethora of IO devices are concerned. Good on them, all the Market Research in the world won't really tell you whether something is going to sell, the only real way to find out is to throw it at the market and see if it sticks. Nintendo have the resources, the funds and the will to do that, and regardless of my opinion of consoles, it's good to see a company prepared to take those risks rather than regurgitate older formulae.

As for the Oblivion and Bioshock things, nice graphics, very atmospheric, however, I'm not so certain about best, I'm sure there are 'better' RPG games out there than Out-of-the-box Oblivion, with the auto monster levelling etc, Morrorwind, as an RPG was 'better' in a lot of ways, but it wasn't nearly as pretty of atmospheric. Bioshock, I'm in two minds about, incredibly well made, beautiful models and shaders, some of the most atmospheric scenarios I've ever seen. Except..... Once I completed it, it ran out of appeal, there's very little 'return' value for the game, for all its beauty.

They're forgetting Devil May Cry 4. That's going to be a big hit.

@GRU:

Good points, but I think you'll agree that my description is a bit closer to home than "the pits" and "trash".

@hayabusa

Agreed, they are certainly a long way from 'Trash', Oblivion, in particular, absolutely blew me away when I first played it, I could just wander for hours from dungeon to dungeon, and Bioshock is probably one of the most atmospheric looking games I have ever played. They aren't, in my opinion, the 'best' of their genre, but they are a long long way from being the worst :)

I bought a PS3, because of the capabilities and all of that, and I do have high hopes for MGS4. There are other games on the playstation 3 coming out of course, so I am excited to play those as well.

If all else fails, I can always buy an Xbox :)

I'm sorry, the cost/ actual content of Wii Fit make it seem like it'll be a more "casual" buy overall, while most heavy gamers will past it by. On the other hand, the leagues of content revealed to be contained with Super Smash Bros Brawl makes it to be both a casual/ non-casual game. The Smash Bro series has always been amung the best sellers as of late for their respective consoles (Melee especially), and Brawl is looking to be even better selling.

In response to Wii Fit. It is an important title in the sense that if successful it will be proof that traditional gaming of button mashing, shooters, and RPGs isn't what it is ALL about. That there exists people that want to play OTHER games than the industry norm.

And I think that is what the Wii is all about in the first place, let go of the current console gamers (that are really budget PC gamers now) and see if there is enough life left in gaming to recruit the next gen of gamers.

On the traditional gaming titles, yeah SSBB is THE anticipated game for the Wii among other traditional Nintendo title rehashes (Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, etc)

E. Zachary KnightYeah, that is why I tend not to use it. But grey just makes not sense. (yes I know you said it jest Conster.)02/03/2015 - 3:36pm
Papa Midnight"Oreo" is indeed certainly offensive, and extremely derisive.02/03/2015 - 3:33pm
E. Zachary KnightConster, I find the term "oreo" to be more fun but likely offensive to some.02/03/2015 - 3:33pm
Papa MidnightWell, it could be argued that no small amount of intolerance is generated from ignorance, in addition to a myopic unwilligness to see a perspective beyond ones own.02/03/2015 - 3:33pm
james_fudgeSome of it is cultural, religous, and yes, old fashioned ignorance02/03/2015 - 3:30pm
ConsterEZK: I'd say one step towards moving beyond racism is being able to call a half-white, half-black president "grey". :P02/03/2015 - 3:29pm
Papa MidnightEZK: Like minds, indeed; and that's the exact point that I'm making. Although the US has elected a black president, it certainly by far has not even come remotely close to moving beyond racism.02/03/2015 - 3:29pm
MonteGranted a lot of morals can be defneded and summed up in terms of logic... like how its illogical to accuse a raped woman of Adultry. Really that isn't simple difference in standards or values; that's just nonsense.02/03/2015 - 3:29pm
james_fudgeaccording to one study the gender pay gap is huge in the Phil., so no I am certainly not suggesting that02/03/2015 - 3:29pm
Andrew EisenI'm pretty sure it's 2015 everywhere but yeah, there are a bunch of places and people (even here) who are woefully behind where they should be.02/03/2015 - 3:29pm
ConsterIt could be they think lesbian women have more testosterone or something?02/03/2015 - 3:29pm
E. Zachary KnightPapa, like minds, man.02/03/2015 - 3:28pm
Papa MidnightConster: the comment appears to have been lost, but someone mentioned that this was a country that has previously elected a female president.02/03/2015 - 3:28pm
E. Zachary KnightWell, the US has elected a Black president, so does that mean we have moved beyond racism?02/03/2015 - 3:28pm
MonteThey claim that LGT women may have an unfair gmaing advantage... That's absurb. Heck its not even a question of morals or ethics, but simple logic02/03/2015 - 3:26pm
ConsterWere you asking anyone specifically, Papa Midnight?02/03/2015 - 3:25pm
Papa MidnightThat's like saying racism no longer exists in America just because we happened to elect a guy who is half-black and half-white (though happens to predominately appear black).02/03/2015 - 3:25pm
