God Save the Queen (from Nintendo)

God Save the Queen (from Nintendo)

January 7, 2008
Add Queen Elizabeth II to the growing ranks of seniors who are learning to love video games thanks to Nintendo's popular Wii console.

As reported by The People, Her Majesty has been monopolizing Prince William's new Wii, a Christmas gift from gal pal Kate Middleton. The report cites an unnamed source at Buckingham Palace:
When [the Queen] saw William playing a game after lunch at Sandringham she thought the Nintendo looked tremendous fun and begged to join in. She played a simple ten-pin bowling game and by all accounts was a natural.

It was hilarious. William was in fits of laughter. He was enormously impressed at having such a cool gran. And although she is 81, the Queen's hand-eye co-ordination was as good as somebody half her age...

[Prince William's] only difficulty now is prising it away from the Queen's clutches. She showed all the signs of becoming a Nintendo addict.

The tech-savvy Queen Elizabeth apparently also enjoys mobile phones, e-mail, iPods and Blackberries.

Lol, Wii pwns. My mom bought one with the quarters she saved for three years. Its awesome. I bought me RE4 and Zelda. FUN!
Larouche sense, tingling.....

Regardless, it's awesome to see her majesty has a good time gaming.
That is a truly heart warming story. A great gamer combination: elderly, political figure (sort of), female, etc.

That's it! She's going back on my top 5 list, and it's getting laminated this time.
Qwiin.

There, I said it first.
That's quite the fun loving queen you Brits have.
Wii Sports is just about the only game we can get my mom to play as well.
@Sean

Hats off sir!

This story has made my morning :D
My mother is hopelessly addicted as well. :P
my respect for the monarchy was just restored.
*sends her a copy of Manhunt 2*
@GameDevMich
That is not the same type of top five list they had on friends is it?
@Peter Goudie

What's not to respect in the first place? They are the handsomest, prettiest, richest and most selfish people in Britain, and everyone loves them.

God Save The Queen.
Well, it puts video games in a positive light for a change. That's always a good thing.

Personally, I think it's pretty cool. Props to the Queen!
I always liked Queen Elizabeth. The fact that she plays video games and is somewhat tech savy makes her even more likeable IMHO.
Even the Queen of England got one before me. I'm really starting to take this personally. =(

My bitterness at not having a Wii aside, this is a pretty cool story.
Beemoh gets Brownie for this..
We our amused.
@Lex-Man

We are amused..

And it's Queen Elizabeth in that picture, not Victoria.
That's all well and good, but she doesn't mute while chewing on XBL.
So... how do you tell your grandmother... the Queen of England... to stop bogarting your wii? :D
William: I didn't drag my sorry arse through Sandhurst to have you take my Piss. **

Elizabeth: Oi! Ge'er out.

**Piss/Wii - Oik's never use the word wee, even when talking about Nintendo systems. It sounds too similar for their tiny minds.
@Rdeegvainl - Ummmmmmm........maybe........ =)
-She showed all the signs of becoming a Nintendo addict.

what exactly are those signs again?
@ Scot

Breathing. That's pretty much it anymore lol.
"She showed all the signs of becoming a Nintendo addict."

... She wants a Triforce tattoo and a DS autographed by good ol' Shiggy?
The Wii truelly is in a league of its own.
wow the most important news ive heard scince the 4 year old down the street got a wii the national media loved it

but in all seriousness do you really need to cover what that old fat inbred spam eating kraut yabbo thinks about her wii any word yet on what robert mugabe thinks about his x box im sure kim jung il must love his playstation 3 i hear the pope loves vintage atari games...
Going to have a bash at getting my parents to play Wii bowling this weekend when they visit, I think my mum allready has and enjoyed it. Now to convert my dad!

My aunt on the other hand flat out refused to even try it even whilst staring at the game being played and seeing how easy it was. Now that is good old age stubborness.
@destijlcat,

Do us a favour in your line of thinking and find a website where people care to read your 13 yr old writing style and opinions. If you don't think that a story about a game playing monarch can ease a bit of the techno fear that plagues older generations in the UK then you are a muppet.
I think it'd be kickin rad if one of those "Wii would like to play" Commercials takes place in Buckinham palace with Queen Elizebeth.

KICKIN' RAD
I have always respected Queen Elizabeth II for her mix of tradition and forward thinking. She has always had that spark to learn about whatever she could get her hands on and it seems that even at 81 she is more open minded about new tech than even the generation after her. I guess that is why she is so well liked and respected. She is the head of state of England and at the same time, the cool grandma you always wish you had.

This story is just... Heartwarming.
So I wonder how long it will be until Nintendo ask the Royal Family to sit around the sofa and play Wii Sports for their newest adverts? ;)

Has to be said, for the all Wii's shortcomings in the current games (roll on Smash Bros Brawl), it is uniting people with the methods and simplicity of some of them.
@TheTrueMrJack:

Would that be the royal Wii?
Now imagine what would have happened if Prince William got a 360 instead? I can just picture the Queen pwning n00bs in Halo 3, with very royal smack talking. :D

This is simply marvelous news.

~Otaku-Man
No one does pomp and circumstance like the royal family.
And Wii playing.

As a side note, I think that anything makes gaming more respectable is awesome.
I want to email england. Yes the country. And tell them of this. And to describe my joy. Maybe in poetry form... Or in song...
*Joys*
@Black Ice

I saw the grammar error after I had posted but there is no way to edit.
But I still think the joke is funny even if the quote comes from the wrong queen (and I knew it was before posting). The phrase is commonly associated with the royal family as well as Queen Victoria.
Hah, that really is amusing. Made me laugh ^_^
Qwiin wasn't too bad either. Great comment to a light-hearted entry.
Next step, Grand Theft Auto. Then the world (well, England at least) will be free of game bashing.
Heh, funny thing is that I watched "Her Majesty" just yesterday.

I suppose now we won't hear her say "We are not amused" any longer.
@Blackice

well, they've always seemed a bit... surplus to requirements.
i mean, they dont do much. though i seem to recall when tony blair tried to go to war, Her Majesty said "you cant. they're "Her Majesty's armed forces"" and there was something funny like that happened.

tbh, i've never seen the point, though these days, with the way politics is running, i'm beginning to think that a monarchy isn't such a bad idea., *eyeroll at politicians*
All things considered, this isn't a big surprise. My signifigant other's 60+ grandmother plays the Wii too, same with my parents (my father has always bordered on JT level when it comes to violent games).
@Peter Goudie

A Monarchy with no power is an Excellent thing. That and they're all very likable adds to it. Mostly. Camilla's a bitch.
Imagine what'll happen is somebody decided to publicize her Royal Highness' friend code...
@Twin-Skies

Oh come on, we're already in the middle of one Sex, Drugs, Rock n' Roll scandal involving the Royal family.

[...] …and apparently, she enjoys playing the Nintendo Wii. [...]
Heh, I have a bit more respect for the Queen Mother of Britain now. Good to see she's open minded about new tech.
[...] Via | GamePolitics.com [...]
I wonder what Mr. J.T. has to say about that. If I remember correctly it was something like: all gamers have a low IQ and are mentally insane and god knows what... I'd be scared now if I was the Queen, she might get sued soon.

@Anon: best thing would be to set the next gta back in London and ask her for a cameo :)

Conclusion: The Queen rules and does some good work for the image of gamers in general and the sub-section of girl gamers (and royal gamers) in particular.
[...] The Nintendo Wii is, by a landslide, the most successful of the current-generation consoles. While it progresses toward the same end as heavy-software titles, it does so in a totally different way. It’s no secret that the Wii’s graphical capability is vastly inferior to that of its Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 (PS3) contemporaries. Instead, Nintendo made a bold move in focusing on fun and revolutionary controls. The naysayers called it gimmicky and predicted failure, but quite the opposite happened. It’s become the gateway console for non-gamers to get their start. Even the Queen of England thinks it’s jolly good. (”Wii are amused!”) [...]

JDKJ: Which could be explained by both (a) and (b).
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:56am
Austin_Lewis: JDKJ: You forgot C) the fact that, for some reason, every time he did something that would suggest he shouldn't be in the military, let alone an officer, higher ups ignored it or let it slide.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:51am
JDKJ: Part of the problem is, I believe, that (a) the Army had a lot of time and money already invested in him and which they were unwilling to simply write-off and (b) an increasing need for the type of skills and services he provided.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:48am
JDKJ: And that even if he was begging not to get cut loose, he was apparently a real good candidate for being cut loose, anyway.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:11am
JDKJ: @chada: And while Kennedy once noted that there's usually more than enough blame for everyone to get a slice, the possibility that the Army was unwilling to cut loose someone who was asking to get cut loose could be a factor.

JDKJ: I'm no psychologist, but I'm told that crazy people have a tendency to do crazy things.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:03am
chadachada321: Whoops, was out of the convo for awhile. I do wonder what type of ammo he used etc, but the real issue is WHY he did it, not HOW
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:56am
JDKJ: But if it turns out that they actually did, they'll have Hell to pay.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:45am
JDKJ: And I'd tend to rule out the possibilty of FN Herstal supplying restricted ammunition to someone merely because they're ordering it from a military base.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:37am
JDKJ: I know you don't leave your gated community and get around much in dark alleys, so you may be surprised to learn that there's this thing called "the black market" where, if you've got enough money, ain't too much of anything which can't be bought.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:36am
Austin_Lewis: Or, maybe he or someone else at the base ordered the SS190 from FN Herstal.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:32am
Austin_Lewis: the hands of private owners. They run about 300 dollars minimum for a box of 50, and boxes of AP 5.7 are extremely scarce, mainly residing in the hands of Class III stores or individuals who for one reason or another got a demo box of it.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:30am
Austin_Lewis: There are other firearms that fire the 5.7. However, I too would like to know where he got the ammo and what kind was used. Maybe Hasan, planning not to live through this, went out and bought one the boxes of SS190 that are floating around in
Posted 11/07/09 at 08:44am
JDKJ: And it isn't yet clear what type of ammunition Hasan used. It's strange that he purchased a gun but didn't purchase ammunition for it at the same place and time. Especially because the calibre required is peculiar to the actual gun.
Posted 11/07/09 at 08:40am
JDKJ: We can sit here all day and debate the relative merits. However, I think the events of recent days suggest that an FN Five-Seven ain't exactly the same as that Daisy BB gun you got for Christmas when you were a kid.
Posted 11/07/09 at 08:38am
Austin_Lewis: JDKJ: tumbling can be quite dangerous. However, the rounds that commonly tumbled were variants of the SS90. Civilian ammo tends to tumble far less commonly.
Posted 11/07/09 at 08:33am
JDKJ: I understand that while they don't have much expansion effect, they tend to "yaw" on impact. Yaw can be almost just as damaging as mushrooming.
Posted 11/07/09 at 08:30am
Austin_Lewis: JDKJ: Except when one considers the lack of expansion for the 5.7, it basically ends up leaving a far smaller hole.
Posted 11/07/09 at 08:29am
JDKJ: But if the latter's travelling at close to twice the speed of the former, there's a compensatory effect on the weight difference.
