Jack Thompson Weighs In on Mass Effect

January 30, 2008 -
Kotaku reports that frequent video game critic Jack Thompson has weighed in on the Mass Effect situation - with, perhaps, a surprising view.

Editor Brian Crecente quotes from Thompson from a recent e-mail exchange:
I don't see any problem with [Mass Effect]. The guy who shot his mouth off about it [on Fox News] had no idea what the Hell he was talking about... This contrived controversy is absolutely ridiculous. Report that, why don't you?

Pot...kettle?

OMG I AGREE WITH JACK THOMPSON EVERYONE RUN TO THE BUNKER THIS MUST BE A SIGN OF THE APOCALYPSE!!!!!!!!!!!*speaks in tounges and goes into a seizure*

I bet it's freezing in hell as we speak.

we might even have missed a couple of flying pigs.

My guess is that he learned a lesson from the Sims faisco a few years back that he was involved in. He went on unreliable information (which turned out to be from a gamer with a chip on his shoulder) that the Sims promoted pedophila. Not unlike the massively uninformed opinion about Mass Effect we've recently seen.

I guess he's just gotten more particular about what games he goes after now. But that comment someone made about calming down while waiting for his disbarment trial verdict is probably on target too.

Hm...

Hang on. I know it's easy to call Jack stupid whenever he opens his mouth, but one of the things you have to realize is that he actually does have a brain in his head. And he likes to use that brain to attract attention to himself.

So by saying something that seems totally backwards and unexpected, he's gaining more attention, which is his ultimate goal. He doesn't actually care about morals or saving lives; he's willing to buck sense and consistency for a few more seconds in the spotlight.

So... in a way, it makes perfect sense that Jack would say this.

@Michael Brooks

The Devil's also set up an ice hockey game on the frozen lake of fire between the '76 Philadelphia Flyers and the 9/11 hijackers.

And I agree with whoever said that this can be used against Jacky Boy whenever he complains about GTAIV or any other game.

Jack tends to upset me a lot. However, I see a lot of people writing comments that do not follow reason, but rather lash out in their anger and frustration.

I believe that we should give credit where credit is due. Jack's issue is not so much against game content as it is with minor's getting their hands on it. Targeting the games themselves were misguided. He should have targeted the retailers that would sell these games to minors, as somebody here pointed out.

Calling him names, insulting his intelligence and being completely closed-minded only lowers you. The irony is that that sort of behavior is precisely what got Jack the ire of the gaming community. Don't make the mistake of acting the same.

Who are you and what have you done with Jack!

Quite possibly the strangest story I have ever seen.

Didn't know it was cold enough outside for hell to actually freeze over. But in all seriousness; if Thompson says the "controversy is absolutely ridiculous" then you know... well... the controversy is absolutely ridiculous.

InSANEly ridiculous.

.....Someone hold me, Im scared.

Something doesn't smell right about this.

Personally, I think the man is just misguided. He should be focusing his efforts on retailers rather than publishers when it comes to selling/marketing grown-up games to minors.

Actually scratch that - he's part of the religious right "moral majority", isn't he? So backwards, so reactionary.

You don't back a horse that is limping before it reaches the starting line ;)

>JB

Ok, lets try this again...

To JB, sure enough it froze!

And I have to say, I agree with JT... but doing so makes me feel dirty.

@ Azzedar

But it also shows that a thaw is coming on Sunday. Does that mean that he will change his mind by then?

If you see 2 people, in this case a columnist who wanted attention and a misinformed Fox employee, fall when they walk over the edge of a cliff, the 3rd guy usually catches a hint...

I'm surprised Jack Thompson dind't bash on the game, and strangely enough, my opinion of him hasn't really changed, except if he can learn... maybe we all can!

I'm no fan of Jack, but he is right on this and when you're right you're right. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the GP community reacts to this one.

I can't say anything.

*sings* It's the end of the world as we know it!

A bit surprising, but welcome all the same... Much as I disagree with Jack that doesn't mean he's wrong all the time.

In fact, I'd feel much better disposed towards him if he was this level headed more often. Unfortunately though Jack's MO isn't too far from Fox's. I'd respect his (difference of) opinions more if they weren't followed by so much hyperbole and questionable public behaviour.

But anyway, I don't want to talk him down when he's being sensible; he's right and good for him.

Gift.

Jack dared Kotaku to report on it.

They did.

Ok, Jack. What's next? You've been keeping a semi-low profile since the trial. Afraid you're going to tick off the judge who's going to decide your career fate?

Samrt. Very smart.

Buy guy, does he mean girl? Or by fox news, did he mean ultra-conservative blog?

Oh no, Night has become Day! Black is now White! We're all gunna die at the nearest Zebra crossing for sure. *faints*

Uh, but yeah, the irony of JT knows no bounds.

Even a broken clock yadda yadda.

The man is focused in his crusade and Mass Effect doesn't fall within his purview. If it did, though, he would be on it like a rabid dog.

@Azzedar

I've actually been to Hell, Michigan..... The name is quite fitting. Not because of intense heat or cold but because actually living in that "town" would most likely be complete torture. Then again, all the place is, is a bar and a gift shop it's one of those "blink and you miss it" when in a car type places hell you could probably run past it in ten seconds or less, maybe there's more now but I kind of doubt it.

And thus Jack Thompson's personal bias and vendetta against Take Two is [somewhat] proven even more.

JT saying that something is ridiculous is like Hitler calling people 'bad'.

If this idiot has nothing better to do than chase queer figments of his imagination where gaming is in any way offensive, let him. If he is too plain dumb to realise that more people are killed by papercuts than gaming then let him be. Ask only that the degenerate freak does not ruin the privilage of modern gaming with ridiculous notions of saving us from the "horrors" that it brings. I have bought 279 games 243 of which I can't legaly own, the idea that they influence you in any way are frankly preposterous.

The funniest thing here to me is that Jack thinks it's some kind of big dare for for Kotaku to print that he says the Mass Effect controversy is contrived.

Of course it is, and he's right about it. The stopped clock is right twice a day after all.

The thing of it is, all of his controversies are equally contrived.

Pointing it out here, there are a few possible motivations:

1. To make himself appear more sane in the light of his ongoing possible disbarment.

2. As others have said, because his vendetta is with Rockstar.

3. Kind of related to #2, Bioware is owned by EA now, and the fact that EA is striking back at the media over this might be intimidating Jack away from the issue. EA's a much bigger fish than Take Two in the big scheme of things.

@ Figsnake

Wow, three of your games became legal in such a short period of time!

But I fail to see your point. There is no country in the world that has that many illegal games.

Let me see:

USA: None. Games are protected speech.
UK: One. Manhunt 2
Germany: Give the people green blood and turn them to robots and it is okay.
Austrailia: ...Well maybe you are from Australia. (sorry had too. Australia is the only country that has banned enough games to warrant using a second hand to count them.)

So where are you from? So far I know of no place that has made anything close to 243 games illegal for anyone to purchase. If you mean that you are under 17 and have 243 M rated games, then they are not illegal.

Wait, that "guy"? Could be he didn't hear the story, or he's thinking that the guy that defended Mass Effect?

Guess he finally picked up his prescription

*picks up phone* Uhh, hello, operator? Yeah, can you give me temperature in Hell please? ... wow, completely frozen over? Thanks. *hangs up*

Wait a sec. This is the same Jack Thompson who has a problem with Take-Two, Rockstar, and GTA, yet he's got no problem with EA and Mass Effect? Hell has officially frozen over.

it must be an imposter!

I'd guess that he's just starting act more sane and rational as he waits for his disbarrment trial verdict.

If he still keeps his license to practice law after it he's going to be on top of this as soon as he can, claiming whatever he can as reasons for this report, such as.
1. The gamers lied about what I said.
2. I didn't understand the issue at hand, I thought that mass effect was being defended on Fox.

His planning process probably will look something like this.
1. Claim whatever I can for my 180 on the topic.
2. Start lawsuit.
3. ???
4. Win and profit.

Then again we can always hope that he's matured from this experience and won't try to bring up frivolous suits anymore, or just go with the likely assumption that he won't be practicing law for a long time, if at all, after the verdict from his disbarrment trial comes through.

They could use that as evidence against Jack. He's against one form of expression such as GTA, yet he's for another in Mass Effect. Kind of like that Simpsons ep where Marge was against Itchy and Scratchy, yet had no problem with Michelangelo's statue of David.

Makes perfect sense Jacko knows there is no real controversy in this game so when GTAIV comes about his arguments will carry more weight as he will be attacking "The real" games that are corrupting the youth of America(I'm not american).

EZK: "The Guy Game" is illegal. :)

holy shit. i have absolutly no idea what just happened, however there is a slight chance he's covering his ass in an attempt to suck up to the judge, for the slight chance on not being debarred.

To me, this statement from Thompson just shows me how much of an hypocrite and attention-grabber he is.

Mass Effect is rated M but Fixed News claims it is sold and marketed to kids. Thompson claims the same things about GTA and Manhunt. He even goes as far as claiming that the selling of GTA constitutes "unfair and deceptive trade practices". Why does Mass Effet get a free pass? It's not a Take-Two game.

Thompson showed outrage at the "pornography" in Bully, boy on boy kissing. Mass Effect has lesbianism, PG-13 explicit of course, but for Thompson a contrevorsy about this is ridiculous. It's not a Take-Two game.

I think Thompson lacks self-definement to the point that he wants to be the only "enemy" gamers have. Like "McCullough and Fox? Ridiculous, I'm the one gamers have to worry about".

What's a matter Jack? Not controversial enough? Not you style? Spill the beans. What makes a contravercy a "JT" contravercy? Are you mad that you didn't start this one?

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Its the end of the world as we know it
Its the end of the world as we know it
Its the end of the world as we know it
And I feel fine

So... Jack is defending Mass Effect? Are we sure? 100% sure? I read the Kotaku story, but still find Jack berating Fox or Cooper over Mass Effect surprising and ironic. While I suppose that even Jack can be sensible when it suits him (though in the Kotaku story, he doesn't seem to have much of a sense of humor), I'm having a though time accepting Jack as an ally in this. I'm biased, but sometimes a little bias can be a good thing, and I wouldn't trust Jack as far as I can throw him.

Maybe Jack is changing... Who am I kidding? It's just not made by RockStar. If this same sex scene was in GTAIV, Jack would be having a fit trying to convince people to ban it. He would have said the same things that Cooper said with just as much research and evidence to back it.

He's playing possum, but I won't let my guard down, no sir.

I guess JT is more against violence than "customizable sodomy" in a video game.

Wonderkarpgot my Reading Rainbow kickstarter rewards....I cant tell if this is a sticker or a bumper sticker.01/30/2015 - 5:38pm
Goth_SkunkAs such, the first playthrough is always going to be the most evocative.01/30/2015 - 3:47pm
Goth_SkunkSo while branching storyline is hallmarked as a feature of the game, the storyline never stays branched for too long. There is a linear story that may branch at points, but each branch always comes right back to the main line further down the road.01/30/2015 - 3:46pm
Goth_SkunkMy biggest gripe about it though would have to be that its replay value sucks. I quickly learned that apart from a few key decisions you make, most choices end up not being relevant because something terrible happens anyway.01/30/2015 - 3:45pm
Goth_SkunkI *love* The Walking Dead. Like I said, I played Season 1 through in one go, and subsequently pre-purchased Season 2 in its entirety sight-unseen.01/30/2015 - 3:43pm
Andrew EisenBy the by, I take it you're a fan of Telltale's Walking Dead? I'm one of the very few who really doesn't like it. Bums me out.01/30/2015 - 3:39pm
Andrew EisenI think we're safe with stuff like Life is Strange, Resident Evil: Revelations 2, and TellTale's games. I was thinking more along the lines of D4. It's genuinely up in the air whether we'll get a conclusion to that story or not.01/30/2015 - 3:33pm
Goth_SkunkUltimately, from this potentially ignorant perspective, it's the gamer who assumes the risk, not the developer. I don't approve. Fortunately, I'm only paying $5 (CDN, no less), so that's money I can easily write off if I'm disappointed.01/30/2015 - 3:32pm
Goth_SkunkIf I'm wrong, and the unthinkable should happen where the developer ends up aborting production of the rest of the episodes, bundle purchasers would be understandably upset. Even moreso if attempting to get a refund turns out to be a hassle.01/30/2015 - 3:30pm
Goth_SkunkThere is an option on XBL to purchase all episodes in a bundle. Pay full price now, get the rest of the episodes as they're released. I would like to think this means that the other episodes are in fact done and ready.01/30/2015 - 3:29pm
Andrew EisenCatch 22 sometimes. Some gamers don't want to buy it if there's no guarantee the whole thing will come out and the whole thing can't come out unless enough people buy the early installments.01/30/2015 - 3:17pm
Goth_SkunkI sincerely hope this trend towards episodic games is not done so because the developer only had enough capital to produce the first 1/5th of the story and is banking on making enough money from the sales of that fifth to produce the rest.01/30/2015 - 3:16pm
Goth_SkunkThat being said, I want to try Life is Strange to get my feet wet.01/30/2015 - 3:13pm
Andrew EisenI'm that way too. I'll wait until the whole thing is out. Same goes for DVDs of TV shows. I'll wait for the season set.01/30/2015 - 3:13pm
Goth_SkunkIf an episodic game is really good, and the time between episodes is more than a week, I'm more inclined to wait for the rest of the episodes to all come out than to try playing it episode by episode at launch date.01/30/2015 - 3:12pm
Goth_SkunkAs someone who played through TWD Season 1 entirely in one day, and then played Season 2 episode by episode when they each came out, I strongly agree with this sentiment.01/30/2015 - 3:11pm
Goth_SkunkFrom what I've been hearing, people haven't been buying it because they're sick of episodic games where they have to wait 6 weeks or more between episodes and they'd rather just wait for the whole thing to come out at once.01/30/2015 - 3:10pm
Andrew EisenNot sure what GamerGate could do to dissuade people from buying a game they'd otherwise be interested in or why it would even want to but I agree, I think the premise is interesting and look forward to learning more about how it actually plays.01/30/2015 - 2:58pm
Goth_SkunkAnd for what it's worth, I saw Life is Strange advertised today on XBL, and the premise looks very, very intriguing. I'm going to buy it today and give it a shot.01/30/2015 - 2:42pm
Goth_SkunkI'm hearing rumours that the recently released game Life is Strange is not selling very well on Steam, and that GamerGate is being blamed as a result. It's just a rumour though.01/30/2015 - 2:42pm
