Arab World Frets Over Video Games

February 8, 2008
While the great majority of video game controversies seem to flare up in either the U.S. or Great Britain, concerns over video game content are increasingly being expressed in the Arab world.

An article in the Yemen Times this week speculates Video Games: Fun or fearsome?, while the Arab News frets that Young Computer Users Could Become Addicts.

From the Yemen Times:
Mortal Combat.” “Assassin’s Creed.” “Grand Theft Auto.” These names have become well known as more and more Yemenis become obsessed with video games – and children are no exception.

“Fighting games are my favorite,” responds 8-year-old Abdulrahman Mohammed...  It came as no surprise that he enjoys games with violent content, which are considered inappropriate for children under age 13.

“We don’t advise children to buy inappropriate games,” explains Fahmi Al-Atas, who works at Sana’a City Computer, a video game store in the capital, “but if they request them, we’ll give them what they want...”

GP: Apparently, there is no retail enforcement of game ratings in Yemen. Meanwhile, the Arab News focuses on game and Internet addiction
While the world is awakening to the social dangers of the Internet — particularly in terms of the increasing addiction to computers — what is Saudi Arabia doing to curb the unhealthy habits?

...Dr. Anwar Abo Khaled, a child psychologist, said recently that he had noticed a correlation between excessive computing activities and aggressive behavior in children he treats...

[Studies] exposed addicts’ tendency toward ignoring responsibilities, lagging in studies, becoming introverts and sometimes having serious behavioral disorder. Some gamers drift into substance abuse, especially stimulants — from caffeine to cocaine — that allow them to remain awake for extended periods of time.

Just remember rule number 1: NEVER PLAY GAMES WITH GIRLS.

They could end up in prison, and then you might feel just a smidge guilty for a minute or two before going back to playing your games.
If any parents from the Arab World are out there reading this article then please heed my words: PLEASE Be a parent and take the responsibility of raising your child and not ask/demand that the government to do something about video games! It is up to you to raise and protect from that which they are not ready for. If there is a game or type of game that you dont want them playing then dont let them play it. If they ask why explain to them that it contains material that they are not ready to handle just yet and any other pertinent reasons(excluding: where it came from, the simple"because i said so", religious excuses aside from killing being wrong, unrelated topics)
Please dont make the same mistake that so many other parents from countries are making right now! Please I beg of you!
How come other countries are conserned with game addiction while the US and UK are about violence and sex?
Personally I prefer a cup of coffee followed by a hit or crystal meth, but each to their own.
Here is how it goes down in my eyes:

THE POMINATOR CHART OF WHAT NATIONS ARE SCARED OF IN VIDEOGAMES:

US: Sex, Swearing and real life
UK: Gratuitous violence, dangerous driving and real life
Germany: Things that acknowledge how screwed up their past was
France: Games which don't have a "surrender" feature (JOKING!)
Eastern Europe-everywhere short of Russia: Addiction to videogames
Russia: people not knowing the difference between real life and games
Australia: Skating, gratuitous sex, gratuitous violence and gratuitous drugs
Japan: Whales seeking revenge
Lyndon Larouchia: Everything- it all tells the youth of the country- because only children play videogames- to go and kill him, they network over myspace and other devil network sites, they buy their guns and drugs from the evil British empire, where MI5 gives them instructions on where he lives and when he sleeps, then people will go and kill him in the real world!!!

Personally I don't think that kids should be playing videogames rated 18, some may be appropriate for children younger than 18, but I would never let my sister play Condemned or Saints row!

I would like it if parents would be more proactive in deciding responsibly whether their children should be playing a game called "Manhunt 2- super ultra bloody gory edition", maybe the parent may enjoy it if they play videogames, but they could take the initiative to lay down and enforce some actual rules and regulations on how their children play videogames.

It is the responsibility of the individual parent, not the government or anyone else, parents have to take the initiative if they are going to raise a good child.
I'm with ijed. Who hasn't done a line of coke so they could rock a few more rounds of CS? If snorting coke off an unconscious hooker's bare ass and fragging some newbs is wrong then I don't want to be right!
Yes, I know so many people who like to rack up a line or 2 just so they can keep on playing.

Oh wait, no I don't.
@ some guy

No worries there. Girl gamers are rare and finding one who's actually single is next to impossible.
@Ken

There is much truth to what you say and to the following:

"Girl Gamers: More sought after than the Ark of the Covenant."
@SlyFox

So that means I win, right? Because my wife is a gamer, right?
@ShadowMagus

yes you do.
Pominator: In Canada, we don't care what's in the games, just as long as the instruction manual is printed in both official languages. (Lookin' at you, Ubisoft.)
@Simon

Ubisoft is a French company, and they have a studio in Montreal. Why shouldn't they print them in both languages?
General Arab world rant
Locking up and strip searching a business woman because she sat with a collage at a star bucks because the power was out at the office and needed the wi fi feed.

Priorities do uuuu has them?
"Some gamers drift into substance abuse, especially stimulants — from caffeine to cocaine — that allow them to remain awake for extended periods of time."
Hell, I have an underground drug ring just so I can pay for MMO fees!

"It also gives the child a false sense of independence in watching what he or she desires or surfing sites without supervision."
And we know your policy about independence and personal freedom...
So when are clerics going to declare a jihad on game developers for corruption of the youth with violence, warfare and sex?
"[Studies] exposed addicts’ tendency toward ignoring responsibilities, lagging in studies, becoming introverts and sometimes having serious behavioral disorder. Some gamers drift into substance abuse, especially stimulants — from caffeine to cocaine — that allow them to remain awake for extended periods of time."

Nothing new there. Kids have been lagging in studies, becoming introverts, and having serious behavioral disorders since the invention of school.
It has always been my opinion that the parents decide what is right
.
Oh no. The games industry might lose 0.0001% of it's total net revenue from the arabic world. Excuse me whilst I cry myself to sleep.

That smell? That's the smell of the Sacasmomiter having melted.
I stand by what I always say:

M rated games don't hurt kids. I'm talking with personal experence.
I find it funny that they are upset about violent video games. In there Qur'an it says to kill all the Christians and the Jews. And if anyone leaves the muslim faith you kill him as well. Well I should not say that. Its not politically correct and someone might get the idea that they are not a peaceful religion. So just ignore what I just said, you will anyway.
Pominator, be sure to add:

UK: Bullying
Germany: Blood
Austrailia: Spray Paint

Also, if there is a growing problem with game addicition in Arab nations, it is because games offer an escape, and people with poor quality of life living in a place where drugs and alcohol are difficult to acquire are going to migrate to whatever escape is easily available. Get rid of enough alternatives and religious fanaticism will be the only escape left, especially the sort that portrays suicide attacks as a positive thing.
I've said it once, I'll say it again......

At some point, my people need to understand there are quite a few other things in the Middle East far more threatening than a video game.
It's "Mortal Kombat" not "Mortal Combat"... You fucking retards!!!
I love it.

An American woman was recently jailed for sitting next a male co-worker in a Starbucks. They publicly behead gay people in their country. Rape victims are subjected to lashings for "adultery." Yet Saudi Arabia is concerned with computer generated violence. Perhaps they should perfect the workings of their own inferior culture.
WTF? Now we got ragheads who blow themselves up for allah or whatever dictating about games. Now they're saying gamers are prone to drug abuse. Thats discrimination achmed. I've been playing games for 15 yrs and games and anime have been my anti-drug. I'd rather drink a keg of mtn. dew than have a hit of coke any day.
These guys in the Arab world have serious human rights issues to fix, and all they can think of are the vidja games. . .

"I find it funny that they are upset about violent video games. In there Qur’an it says to kill all the Christians and the Jews. And if anyone leaves the muslim faith you kill him as well. You're thinking of the wrong Quran my friend.
Governments are afraid to try new things. We all know this.
"You’re thinking of the wrong Quran my friend"

Really? I am? hmmm... Well this was the one I was thinking about.

“To participate in Jihad in Allah's cause” (Al Bukhari vol. 1:25)

Sura 2:187-189 “And kill them wherever ye shall find them, and eject them from whatever place they have ejected you; for civil discord is worse than carnage:.....

Sura 9:5: “And when the sacred months are passed, kill those who join other gods with God wherever ye shall find them; and seize them, besiege them, and lay wait for them with every kind of ambush: but if they shall convert, and observe prayer, and pay the obligatory alms, then let them go their way, for God is Gracious, Merciful.”

Sura 9:39 “If you do not fight, He will punish you severely, and put others in your place”

Sura 5:51: “O you who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and protectors: they are but friends and protectors to each other....

War is prescribed to you: but from this ye are averse.” (Sura 2:212).

"Hadith, the body of traditions relating to Mohammed and now supplemental to the Koran: He (Abu Hurayah) reported the messenger of Allah as saying: The last hour will not come before the Muslims fight the Jews and the Muslims kill them, so that Jews will hide behind stones and trees and the Stone and the tree will say, O Muslim, O servant of God! There is a Jew behind me; come and kill him. The only exception will be the box-thorn for it is one of the trees of the Jews. (Sahih of Muslim, quoted by Israel and the Prophecies of Al Quran by Ali Akbar, Bismi Publishers 1992, p.44)"

Yea, Thats the one.
I never would have been able to move a gram of coke if it weren't for Pong in the 70's.

1. I don't think I ever remember even the more hardcore gamers in local area going thi far. Sure, theyd pop a Red Bull on occasion, but cocaine? How do we know said gamers weren't druggies even before they began playing?

Besides, this only speaks for an extreme case within the community...much in the same way fundamental jihadists are an extreme case within the Muslim Community. Since when did attacking an entire community based on the stupidity of a minority ever become an educated "study"?

That's baseless generalization.

2. "becoming introverts and sometimes having serious behavioral disorder."

As many of us have stated before, a lot of games today rely heavily on socialization. Doubly so for multiplayer-based games (Like Xbox Live), or MMORPGs. Heck, even single-player games nurture a sense of cammaraderie in the way it allows guys who've played the game to mingle and talk about a related topic.

Its not different from sports fans gathering to talk about their favorite players.

And as many MMO gamer will tell you - being a jerk will only get you in hot water with the community, at worst a banning from the GMs. As they say in my home country, "delikadeza" will save your life.

Introverted? Serious behavioral disorders? Those criteria fit the profile for a suicide bomber far more than a gamer.

3. "Some gamers drift into substance abuse, especially stimulants — from caffeine to cocaine — that allow them to remain awake for extended periods of time."

As far as I can see, this problem is far more prevalent among truckers and hard labor workers.

Austin_Lewis: Health insurance, brought to you by the same kind of bureacrats who couldn't, in timely fashion, investigate the comments of any of the men Obama appointed Czars. Or their past. Or their history of not paying taxes.

Austin_Lewis: Yes, and what a piece of crap it was. Arresting and fining people just because they don't make a personal choice to buy healh insurance, creating over a hundred new bureacracies, and worse.

JDKJ: Which could be explained by both (a) and (b).
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:56am
Austin_Lewis: JDKJ: You forgot C) the fact that, for some reason, every time he did something that would suggest he shouldn't be in the military, let alone an officer, higher ups ignored it or let it slide.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:51am
JDKJ: Part of the problem is, I believe, that (a) the Army had a lot of time and money already invested in him and which they were unwilling to simply write-off and (b) an increasing need for the type of skills and services he provided.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:48am
JDKJ: And that even if he was begging not to get cut loose, he was apparently a real good candidate for being cut loose, anyway.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:11am
JDKJ: @chada: And while Kennedy once noted that there's usually more than enough blame for everyone to get a slice, the possibility that the Army was unwilling to cut loose someone who was asking to get cut loose could be a factor.

JDKJ: I know you don't leave your gated community and get around much in dark alleys, so you may be surprised to learn that there's this thing called "the black market" where, if you've got enough money, ain't too much of anything which can't be bought.
