Funny: Jack Thompson Parody Video

Funny: Jack Thompson Parody Video

February 26, 2008
Say what you will about Jack Thompson, the man has become the embodiment of those who look down on games and gamers.

That's clearly the reason why he appears in so many gamer-created parodies. Here's the latest...

Thanks to: Longtime GamePolitics reader Stephen Broida, aka Otaku-man, for pointing us to the vid...

Heh... somebody's gonna get sued.
It's not news, but if Dennis doesn't post EVERYTHING about Jack Thompson, he gets a little... sue-ey, right?
Great, now I'm gonna have that tune stuck in my head all day.
Very well done.
If it helps, think of it as an Internet-age equivalent of a political cartoon.
whats that game in 2.37?
@ Cidas

My opinion is thus:

If this were a video of Dave Grossman, Hillary Clinton, Mitt Romney, Joe Leiberman, etc. Dennis would post it. Why? Becasue it involves political figures and their anti game agendas. Why should we worry about hurting John Bruce's feelings?

There is no reason. John Bruce has made himself into a public figure of the game industry. He knew full well what that encompases. He should expect this sort of thing to happen.

I don't think that Dennis is trying to incite a response from John Bruce. Dennis doesn't need to post videos for that. Anything related to John Bruce and his actions will do that.

But here you have a gamer making a video to bring to light the falacies of a public anti game figure. Why is that not news? Would it have been more news worthy if a news columnist wrote a biting editorial on his antics?
HAH! Er...

That wasn't too bad. Well done.
@E. Zachary Knight

I understand what you are saying its just that I fear recipocation from a person like Jack Thompson. If it was Clinton, Romney, Leiberman or any other political figure, I think it is different. I know that Jack Thompson is more or less powerless, or will soon be to be able to push his agenda.

I was merely expressing my concern and opinion that this did not consitute as news as compared to the other items commonly cited at GP. But yes, if a news columnist wrote a biting editorial on his antics would be more newsworthy than a video that GP was referred to. The news columnist is obviously of more influence as more individuals read the paper or read online than they do than watch videos. Videos such as these never really reach the headilnes of major news sites, or minor. The only one that I can really think of is JibJab.com. Outside of the video game industry, the majority does not know that much about jack thompson. If you were to show the public the video, and the paper which one would they find more informative?
@Cidas

What is more informative -- a political cartoon, or a biting news editorial?

I think you have a hang up with it being a video rather than the kind of media you are obviously more comfortable with. GP does a lot here around what is important to the gaming community, your average person who doesn't know much about video games, wouldn't be likely to peruse GP. So making a case about how the video wouldn't be as useful to people who wouldn't be likely seeing the site, as opposed to those who would be likely to view the site is a bit pointless, an intellectual exercise at best.

The video is satire. You claim you had no fear about repercussion from Jack Thompson in one reply, but then later say you do fear repercussion. But it still is satire, it is relevant to topics that come onto this site regularly, and it helps break the monotony of the typically serious articles on GP. JT can wave his arms all he wants about the video, but as it is satire, it is protected speech, and as much as JT may want to, he can't actually do anything to shut it down, nor can he get the government to interfere.
@Xlorep DarkHelm

If I take what you say, that the average person does not visit GP, and will most likely not watch the video is very true. But what about that article on Jack Thompson that msn released? I'm sure many saw that. And it was referred to here on GP also.
I don't fear reprocussion from Jack Thompson as much as I fear Thompson using this later on to discredit GP in public. Thompson is very manipulative with his words, so I could see something like that happen.
I never said anything about discrediting a publication. Perhaps they would see the value,b ut probably not since the average person does not know about jack thompson, or cares enough.
Are you saying I am sympathetic towards Jack Thompson, or that I believe what he says? That's hardly the case as I am very much against his views and loook at his actions with disdain.
Epic win!
Dammit, where do I recognize "Pure Pwnage" from...?

*checks* Ah, that's right, the WoW ballad song.

Yep, still awesome.
LEGALITY!!
You are so sued, you know that right?
I swear he's like Bush. We don't need to make up any jokes about him, he provides the jokes himself.

I wonder how long before he tries to sue for defamation and promoting violence against him.
Yeah its funny, but how is this news?
uhh, clarification, it's Jack that gets sue-ey
Jack can sue all he wants, but he should realize we're not scared of him anymore. In fact, quite the opposite. He's scared of us because with all this video evidence people have been collecting, we can show everyone else outside of Fox News what a lunatic he is.
@Ken

He won't realize it. He's too full of himself to see past his own self importance.
I really don't like JT pardoys because a great deal of them is just not that funny but this video is.
It's as much news as the funny crime stories.

Gotta have a comics section somewhere in every news outlet. :)

Nightwng2000
NW2K Software
Solid awesome!

So how long before Jack threatens legal action due to the video's threatening his life?
That was... alright. I mean, really, its not like the 2006 Sony E3 Press Conference video. I mean really, given the choice between JT and a Giant Enemy Crab, I think the crab is funnier because its not supposed to be. ;)
Video games, video games, video games games games. Video games, video games, video games games games.

That was a pretty amusing video. It gets extra points for using the Genesis light gun.
On the scale of a plastic cup filled with Chef-Boyardee ravioli to a crystal goblet filled with caviar....That video would have to be a steel bowl, full of Campell's minestrone.
That video = Win.
Well done! I wonder how long it will take Thompson to start tossing out lawsuits?
Defamation of character law suit in 3... 2... 1...
For those wondering about how "newsworthy" this was... there are plenty of times in the past where Dennis has offered comic relief at Gamepolitics, rather than strict news. Especially when the news is a little thin. There is nothing absolutely requiring him to always offer news, sometimes it is nice to have something silly in here too.
JT is the rare case where being 'full of himself' and 'full of shit' means literally the same.
Yeah, that's the funny thing about Jack. Initially, he'll threaten to sue. Then expect him a few weeks later to do an about face on it.

Jack's memory is notoriously short I've noticed when it comes to stuff like this. Another example was with the custom of him in MK Armageddon that he threatened to sue Midway over. So I wouldn't be surprised if after he tries to sue Purepwnage.com, he'll bring it up later and say something like, "Oh yeah I saw that video. Funny stuff."
That one is good, but I still like this one a little better even if it is childish and inappropriate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dal-0Z27_CM
I like how the ps3 falls on whats his name after landing on jack.
That cool but he didn't have Jack say the word video games nearly as often as he usually does but that's okay it was a short video after all.
Do anyone know what game it is that the sniper sequence was taken from ? drives me crazy that I dont know it =)
And why is this on GP? Very not newsworthy.
Cidas:

It's noteworthy because it's lulzworthy.

Personally, I lol'd. Would lol again.
@Cidas

Maybe check comments before asking a question that already was answered. Especially given that there aren't too many comments yet.
@Cidas

Would you still read a newspaper with no funnies section?

Didn't think so.
@Xlorep Darkhem:
I did check, but it's my personal opinion so even though I reiterated it, sure. But since it's my opinion, I don't want to devalue it by not saying what I want to say, even if I'm repeating something from earlier.
@Kurisu7885
I read the newspaper for the news. I read comic books for the funnies. I just don't think that something like this really belongs on GP, since this can be intereperted as a personal swipe against Jack Thompson by hosting and promoting this video. I mean, I know Dennis has his own opinion, and his asides to the stories he writes gives GP personal touch. However, I don't belive that if he is striving to be a reputable, journalisitc website that something like this does take a little bit away from GP, as GP also represents the ECA. As GP is part of the ECA, it also looks bad on the ECA's character too.

I do think the video is funny and everything but instead of hosting it directly on GP, he could have dropped a link..that could have been better.
That video was funny! It's not newsworthy, but I love it when funny stuff gets put on here.

@ Chaos

I actually have that video on my favorites.
Cidas..I would like you to do me a favor and draft letters to every major tv station AND local affiliate. Their stupid "lifestyle" sections about cute three legged dogs aren't news either.

Get crackin.
@ Cidas

It is not news. That is agreed upon. But even the most serious of news sites need something to break the monotony. A funny video or something makes it nice.

I also don't see a real problem here. Dennis does not post plain humor articles very often. It would be a stretch to say that it happens as often as once a week.

But it is funny that every time he posts something like this, we get a few of those "How is this news?" people posting their complaints.

But as for the "hosting", he is not hosting the video here. He has embedded the video, but it is hosted elsewhere.
Can't see it. Work browser not video capable. Lunch almost over. Will try and remember to check it out when I get home, but I generally forget about John as much as possible.
@ E. Zachary Knight
I realize that what you say is true, and I was just speaking out of my own opinion. Yes, I realize that he does not do something like this, but because the subject is jack thompson, it just makes this different, almost as if he is attacking Jack.
While I'm probably just making this out to be worse than it is, I just don't think that its appropriate for the person to whom the video is obviously referring to. Thanks for correcting me on the hosting, as it is actually embedded here as you say.
If you think stories like this are a waste of time... just keep scrolling past. You do realize you've wasted even more time by going out of your way to comment, right?
Parody laws ftw!
@Cattleprod
I didn't say they were a waste of time, I just didn't think it consitutes as news for this website.
@Cidas

Less of an attack on Jack Thompson, more of mocking. Satire is not exactly anything Jack Thompson can get the government to move against, and that video was satirical in nature. There is no attack against JT in it, just more making fun of some of the things he said, in a humorous, obviously not serious manner. If you are worried about backlash against Dennis for this, I'd say you don't need to worry at all.
@Cidas said:

"because the subject is jack thompson, it just makes this different, almost as if he is attacking Jack. While I’m probably just making this out to be worse than it is, I just don’t think that its appropriate for the person to whom the video is obviously referring to. "

-----------------

You lost me. I even tried to read it with my head tilted to the side, but it didn't help.

Do you mean that as this is a games site, nothing should be posted that could be construed as attacking people affiliated with the gaming industry (even the self-affiliated)? Or is it just JT who gets "different" treatment? Or are you saying this wouldn't have been posted if it weren't about JT? Are you saying you disagree with the video itself (the "don't think it's appropriate for the person it's referring to" thing)? Or did that mean it's not appropriate for JT to watch the video?

I can't find anything that labels this as a "pure news" site. The tagline is "Where Politics and Video Games Collide". Based upon that, I expect three things:

1. Stuff about video games and politics.
2. Some bias, some good guys, some bad guys (see "politics")
3. Antagonism, aggression (see "collide")

I see a lot less wrangling here than I would expect of a similar site about any other topic, to be honest.

That said... JT has done everything in his power to set himself up as an antagonist, including naming people around here in lawsuits. I wouldn't worry about his delicate sensibilities.
What would you guys rate this on a scale from Matt Damon to Jack Nicholson?

I'm leaning towards the Leonardo DiCaprio, possibly a Clint Eastwood....
@Xlorep Darkhelm
Yes, I do worry about backlash against dennis. I wouldn't doubt that jack is seething over this. I know that jack doesn't have anything against dennis in this regard of the video. It may be satire, but it's biting satire.

@Saint 13....I never said GP was a pure news site, but I was kind of surprised by this post, as most everthing else that dennis writes is much more serious.

It's with JT though, that he can spin yarns about things like this and discredit gamepolitics.
@ Cidas

And how many times has Dennis had to put up with Jack Thompson taking personal swipes at him? There are just too many to name. Who cares if JT sees this as a personal swipe at him? The prick deserves it and a hell of a lot worse for the way he acts and treats everyone else.
@Trevor McGee
That's true, but isn't recipocating to Jack Thompson in such a way stooping to his level? Dennis is obviously no Jack Thompson, as Dennis has his integrity and reputation to his name, something that Jack doesn't have anymore. It just doesn't make sense to me to incite jack thompson for no reason to reciporcate, which I am thinking that he will.
@Cidas

Not everything that is posted in gamepolitics is completely serious. Most, sure. But not all. There is the periodic humor added in to break the monotony. Honestly, I like it. But, guaranteed, there will be someone who complains in each and every one about how it isn't "news" and shouldn't be on gamepolitics for various reasons.
lol i love the ''hyper reality situation in virtual reality'' line

shows what an asshat JT is, he contradicts himself in the same sentence. epic fail Jt, epic fail.
Nice beat, if a little basic. I will say it's the only time I've actually smiled at Jack's self-righteous mug on-screen, so that's something.
Video Games, Video Games, Video Games Games Games Games....
Jack Thompson, the new Wilford Brimley?
oohhhhhhhhh bitch slap
@ Cidas

You know, if Dennis were so inclined, I believe that he would have a page devoted to editorial cartoons, videos and games. But he has not made that decision.

So I don't know why you are so concerned, but you have nothing to fear. Dennis does not care what John Bruce cares to through at him. It all has no bearing in reality. So don't fret for him.
Alas poor jackie this is your life (or lack thereof). Parody you say? Well certainly in parts and intended to be so, but parody has a core of truth and the truth often hurts.

@Cidas

Do we care about JBTs feelings? Why should we?? He has come onto this site uninvited been banned which should give a hint, banned, returned.. rinse and repeat. He has attacked us as a group and individuals, sued Dennis and the ECA. Yet you wonder why we the gamers take some small amusement in his fall? Petty sure but who said we were paragons of virtue?
@Cidas

Karma.

He's nasty to us, so we have every right to be nasty right back.
I sent this to Dennis last night on a whim when I saw a link posted over at Kotaku. I thought it was pretty funny and thought he'd get a kick out of it. I also thought it'd be even funnier if it got posted since a certain someone we all know and facepalm at checks this website regularly. Thinking about what his reaction would be just tickled my funny bone.

Apparently it was funny enough to post. Who knew? :)
Glad you guys liked. :)

~Otaku-Man
Am I the only one who thought the video stunk?
Are actual Wiki Quotes being used here?
as best i can remember yes those are actual quotes, or at least very close to it.
That's actually somewhat talented. Is anyone taking a poll on how long it takes Jack-o to see it and have kittens?
Actually, this is news. Even those fluff stories about cute puppies done by a network show is new, just not hard news. This isn't hard news, as we're acustomed to here, but it's still relevent, it's still timely and still fits under the other news values.

It's news, just not hard news.
Wow...Alright mark up another win for the pure pwnage crew(a whole 2 total...This, and Fps Doug)
@ Cidas

By that logic, we could discredit any news publication that includes editorial comics. After all, they are making light of political figures and situations.

This could not be used to discredit GP. It is not possible. The average person upon seeing this would recognize the editorial value of the video. There are some people who would consider it a personal attack, but they are the same people who already believe John Bruce.
Hah! I loved this! I wonder how many more like this are there?
@ Cidas

I quote:

I don’t fear reprocussion from Jack Thompson as much as I fear Thompson using this later on to discredit GP in public.

That sounds like you stated that JT could discredit GP using this article.

I was not saying that you believe John Bruce, or that you sympathize with him. What I said was that anyone who would immediately say that GP is not a genuine news source upon seeing this video, already believes the drivel that John Bruce spouts.
That was the most amazing thing I've seen in a while XD
Dennis, you hit the target straight on the bull's eye when you said that JT is the embodiement of all that oppose video games and gamers.
