Washington Post's Former Video Game Reporter Wins Pulitzer for V-Tech Coverage

April 15, 2008
Major 'gratz to Jose Antonio Vargas (left) of the Washington Post, who was part of the WaPo team that recently scored a Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of last year's Virginia Tech massacre.

As reported by the Mountain View Voice, Vargas used Facebook to locate a witness to the shootings on the V-Tech campus. Of the award, Vargas said:
I won this as part of a team, that's important. I didn't cure cancer... I owe my Pulitzer to Facebook reporting,

I've covered everything from video game culture to HIV and AIDS in Washington to national presidential campaigns. Sometimes I wonder if I'm way too lucky. It hasn't quite literally sunk in yet.

GP: I met Jose at E3 2006, where we talked for a while over coffee in a Starbucks a few blocks from the L.A. Convention Center. It was apparent that he had the requisites for a good reporter. Jose is personable, yet not shy about asking the tough questions. At the time, he was working on what is probably the best profile of then-ESA boss Doug Lowenstein that I've ever read. After that initial meeting, he also picked my brain (such as it is) for the occasional quote.

Well done, Jose!

For shame! Obviously the Pulitzer Prize Committee is in on the Conspiracy Against Jack Thompson! Why else would they reward such reporting when we all know because Jacko never forgets to remind us that the Washington Post originally reported that the killer at V-Tech trained on the Counter-Strike Murder Simulator and then removed it in an obvious cover up! Now the Pulitzer Prize Committee has rewarded that coverup! I can only hope that the Pulitzer people have a good fax machine capable of handling the barrage of faxes that Jacko is no boubt going to sent their way.
cool
That's great...
Congratulations to Mr. Vargas! Nice to see someone recognized for responsible reporting in the face of such obvious sensationalism bait.
Now THAT'S journalism! Outstanding!

You'll see few, if any, from tabloid trash news services, such as FOX News, receiving such honors.

Even if you don't like the Washington Post, clearly this team earned the rewards for their hard work.

Ah, journalism.

That's better than that Angry German Kid coverage on German TV.
@nightwng2000:

Yeah Bill, where's your Pulitzer?

Oh, my bad. :P

But Brill-o is not a reporter anymore. =^^=
V-Tech makes telephones. Virginia Tech (VT, VPI, maybe VA Tech if you are dolt doing color commentary during football season) is the name of the school.
@AbsolutMauser

What does it matter?

@jccalhoun

I'm willing to wager he is too busy worrying about how he is going to be disbarred to send faxes about that.

@Topic

Congratulations, Mr. Vargas!

sqlrob: @JC: I'm both a dev (not games) and a consumer, and a fairly strict Constitutionalist

ZippyDSMlee: JC:no doubt but looking at the mix, net speeds and and avabilty are not there, HDDs might be but constant use is a worry, lastly big media will have to forget DRM and focus on volume sales world wide, all of these will ignite DD for joe public.

JC: Heh. As much as I like to give my own opinion, I feel mainstream supports the industry more. Very few buy digital for their fami

ZippyDSMlee: JC:meh I know I suck but I will be more than happy to argue my point with you in a stable yet silly fasion :P

JC: Everyone has their opinion. We can't all agree on something specific though. sqlrob also has interesting viewpoints...

ZippyDSMlee: JC:I tell it like it is from my POV and try not get into petty arguments..but sometimes.... I can not hold it back...

JC: Zel & Zippy. I love your opinions on the matter of this recent discussion. Especially since EZK doesn't seem to be aroun.

zel: @sqlrob: thanks for pointing that out, i actually bought it straight from steam myself and registered my reg HL cd-key.

zel: Namely the one where I said I do not think steam is perfect. :P
Posted 12/03/08 at 03:40pm
zel: "has issues with understanding that steam is imperfcert and dose not quite work right on all PCs" apparently you missed one of my shouts :)

ZippyDSMlee: sqlrob:will will stop off line mode from working,would that revamped and made better,would also like game transfers made better.I can wait to support steam directly its easy to find a steamless rip of a game to put in my retail package.

ZippyDSMlee: sqlrob:He has issues with understanding that steam is imperfcert and dose not quite work right on all PCs, I'll agree my issues with steam are somewhat silly, I can handle the online activation but not the forced online aspect of that more oftten than not
Posted 12/03/08 at 03:17pm
sqlrob: @zel: Half Life 2 box requires Steam
Posted 12/03/08 at 03:11pm
ZippyDSMlee: Y helo thar MR troll......
Posted 12/03/08 at 03:07pm
farlander28: Not getting offline mode to work is also invalid, as it's not a design issue but a tiny minority who can't figure it out.
Posted 12/03/08 at 03:03pm
farlander28: @Zippy: Having your internet cut-out has already been covered as an invalid complaint, you don't need to be online.
Posted 12/03/08 at 02:19pm
ZippyDSMlee: Zel to finsih the previous post.
Posted 12/03/08 at 02:17pm
insanejedi: Well for Prey, they just sent disk copies of the game when their DL service went down.
Posted 12/03/08 at 02:06pm
zel: Now thats a great question. It is within reason that they could issue 1 final patch to make games work on their installed machines and then that would be it. but who really knows?
