Hillary, Obama, McCain Pander to Wrestling Audience

April 22, 2008 -
Politics, as the saying goes, makes strange bedfellows.

And there could be none stranger than seeing Hillary Clinton, who has long decried violence in video games, cozying up to the pro wrestling crowd with a tongue-in-cheek campaign promise that, if elected, she will deliver "the people's elbow" when things get rough.

Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain all appeared in taped WWE promos last night. Obama seemed uncomfortable, cracking only a "Do you smell what Barack is cookin'?" joke toward the end of his remarks.

Clinton's video was more enjoyable, if for no other reason than because it was such a departure from her normally aloof public persona. But, "Call me Hillrod?" A bit much...

John McCain's performance was funny ...and a little scary:
You want to pull out of Iraq? Well I say, no surrender... I'm gonna introduce Osama bin Laden to The Undertaker... [Americans] watch WWE because wrestling is about celebrating our freedom...

Watching these videos brings a few video game-related points to mind:

First, will we ever see major candidates making official appearances within a video game, or even at a video game event?

Second, why is WWE, with its real-life violence, steroid abuse issues, and hyper-sexualized "diva" wrestlers an acceptable venue for presidential candidates while video games are, apparently, not?

Finally, if one of these candidates goes after video game violence in the future, whether as president or as a member of the Senate, they need to be reminded of their political pandering to the wrestling audience.

@sqlrob

If you did even five minutes of research or hell, actually finished reading that article you would have seen that the "wrestling defense" used in the Lionel Tate case was 100% BS and that Lionel Tate had before he murdered that girl and continued to have a history of behavioral problems, none of which had to do with WWE or prowrestling in general.

You guys have something in common with Hillary now, GG.

@PhoenixZero:

Gee, exactly like games. Fancy that.

Another funny thing about this:

The vast majority of WWE's roster are Republican, IIRC.

@ RobertHMayfire

Plenty of politicians use war, that's just as violent and sexy.

@ sqlrob

It's this kind of thinking that gets us into trouble. When a news source or politician says "Hey, videogames are violent!", gamers line up to say "Hey, so is ____". Usually they go straight to movies, but some talk about books, wrestling, or a number of things. What we should be saying is that videogame violence has no proven harmful effects, and that M rated games shouldn't be sold to children.

Throwing another form of entertainment doesn't help, no matter how much you may or may not like it, especially if that form of entertainment is available in videogame form. While many people scoff at wrestling, and at wrestling videogames, those willing to sit down and play them dispite their bias often find something that's quite enjoyable. Wrestlmania 2000 and No Mercy were favorites of my group of friends though there were only a few wrestling fans among us.

Remember Rob, if we say 'hey, wrestling's just as bad' and they decide to do something about it, are we any better than they are?

Oh no, this is just retarded.

And to add insult to injury, Hillary won Pennsylvania! Get under the biggest damn rock you can find, the Devil's comin' to town!

@NeW SpEcTrUM:

You make it sound like it was a surprise that Hillary won Pennsylvania... but I doubt she won it by enough.

Obama out-spent her on campaign ads 3 to 1, but she still came out ahead. That is a bad sign.

This election has so many wierd things to it, don't vote for Obama your racist, don't vote for hiliray you hate woman, vote for the republican you apprently love the Iraq war and people dieing.

Will there ever be an election ever be about issues and not left vs right?

@Ragnaar

Can't say I'm surprised, but it hurts all the same.

...Damn, do I sound melodramatic.

Would this have even been posted if this was done at a NFL football game that shares all three of those issues? Probably not.

Not surprising to see the next line of political puppets and douchbags parading with more hypocritical bullshit.

I hope the world ends soon :(

[...] Pure weirdness in current pres-candidates pony-ing up to be like WWE wrestlers… [...]

MechaTama31AE: Probably snarky commentary on this: http://www.gamepolitics.com/2014/08/29/principle-player-leland-yee-arms-trading-case-dies08/30/2014 - 8:43pm

IanCBroke my EA boycott to pick up Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare. Loving it. Still hate EA though. But i like Popcap. Gah.08/30/2014 - 6:01am

AvalongodAgain I think we're conflating the issue of whether Sarkeesian's claims are beyond critique (no they're not) and whether its ever appropriate to use sexist language, let alone physical threats on a woman to intimidate her (no it isn't)08/29/2014 - 5:04pm
prh99Trolling her or trying to assail her integrity just draws more attention (Streisand effect?). Which is really not what the trolls want, so the only way to win (if there is a win to be had) is not to play/troll.08/29/2014 - 5:02pm
prh99Who cares, just don't watch the damn videos if you don't like her. Personally, I don't care as far as she is concerned as long there are interesting games to be played.08/29/2014 - 4:34pm
Andrew EisenZip - And yet, you can't cite a single, solitary example. (And no one said you hated anyone. Along those lines, no one claimed Sarkeesian was perfect either.)08/29/2014 - 3:51pm
Andrew EisenSaint's Row: Gat Out of Hell was just announced for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One making it the 150th game For Everything But Wii U! Congratulations Deep Silver!08/29/2014 - 3:49pm
ZippyDSMleeI do not hate them jsut think its mostly hyperlobe.08/29/2014 - 3:40pm
Andrew EisenSleaker - I'd say that's likely. From my experience, most who have a problem with Sarkeesian's videos either want to hate them in the first place (for whatever reason) or honestly misunderstand what they're about and what they're saying.08/29/2014 - 3:16pm
james_fudgeWe appreciate your support :)08/29/2014 - 2:55pm
TechnogeekIt gives me hope that maybe, just maybe, the gaming community is not statistically indistinguishable from consisting entirely of people that your average Xbox Live caricature would look at and go "maybe you should tone it down a little bit".08/29/2014 - 2:49pm
TechnogeekI just want to say that while I've disagreed with the staff of this site on several occasions, it's still good to see that they're not automatically dismissing Anita's videos as a "misandrist scam" or whatever the preferred dismissive term is these days.08/29/2014 - 2:49pm
E. Zachary KnightZippy, So you can't find even one?08/29/2014 - 1:04pm
ZippyDSMleeAndrew Eisen:Right because shes prefect and never exaggerates... *rolls eyes*08/29/2014 - 12:53pm
SleakerAnd honestly, nearly all of the games she references, or images she depicts I've always cringed at and wondered why they were included in games to begin with, from pinups through explicit sexual depictions or direct abuse. I think it's cheap storytelling.08/29/2014 - 12:35pm
Sleaker@AE - aren't most people fundamentally misunderstanding her at this point? haha.. On a related note I think a lot of the backlash is coming from males that think she is telling them their 'Generic Male Fantasy' is bad and wrong.08/29/2014 - 12:33pm
Andrew EisenAnd no, I don't think the female community would be upset over the performance of a case study in and of itself. Possibly the mostivations behind such a study, the methodology or conclusions but not the mere idea of a case study.08/29/2014 - 12:29pm
