In UK, Game Biz Group Lobbies for PEGI Rating System

May 1, 2008
Although TV shrink Dr. Tanya Byron has recommended that video games sold in the U.K. carry both Pan European Game Information (PEGI) and British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) ratings, the video game industry wants to deal with PEGI alone.

As reported by Spong, Paul Jackson (left), director of game publishers trade group ELSPA, said:
We are an entertainment industry that produces games for all ages. It is important that during this period of consultation post-Byron we work with everyone to ensure the revised ratings platform is robust and future proof.

As games move increasingly on line, we call on all parties to embrace the PEGI Age Ratings system. As an instrument of the Video Recordings Act it would have teeth and deliver the right system to help the public make informed choices about the games they play. We are delighted the DCMS Select Committee recognised the industry made a strong case for PEGI.

Personally, I don't think ISFE, the company that runs PEGI, would be able to be independant enough to act as a UK regulator. Its members are largely drawn and active from the games industry. Look at its board of members and who they work for.

Jens Uwe Intat, Electronic Arts (Chairman)
Thierry Braille, Disney Games
Scott Dodkins, Eidos
Georges Fornay, SCEE
Matthew Hill, Nintendo of Europe
Simon Little, Take 2 Interactive
Henk Hoogendoorn, BLISA
Geoffroy Sardin, SELL
Olaf Wolters, BIU
Thalita Malago, AESVI
Alberto Gonzalez-Lorca , ADESE
Per Strömbäck, MDTS
Michael Rawlinson, ELSPA

FAIL.

Once more, with feeling: FAIL

FFS, when will ELSPA learn? Nobody in the UK above the age of 25 recognises the PEGI symbols, whereas ?everybody recognises the BBFC logos.

PEGI = obscure symbols and age classifications that get mistajen difficulty ratings.
BBFC = age ratings given in instantly recognisable number form on front of the box *exactly tha same as for films and DVDs* and then written descriptor on the back.

PEGI = does not play games as part of ratings process
BBFC = *does* play games as part of ratings process

Can ELSPA just shut the hell up now already?
@Monkeythumbs

Hey, I'm a fair way past 25 years old and I recognise PEGI symbols! They are pretty simple once you get used to them. Nevertheless I agree everyone recognises the BBFC certs, and post-Byron the argument is effectively over. The games industry lost, time to suck it up and move on I think.

Gift.

Sadly the BBFC will not adapt to the times will not slot adult media to adults wihtout creating trouble, sorry they are a failing ratings system.

The ESRB dose not play games and it tends to function reasonably 90% of the time.

The BBFC needs to shut up and just rate the media its given and not pitch a childish fit when something comes up it dose not like.

If Manhunt 2 was so bad give ti a 18R screw the non written 18R=pron thing, porn is porn be it gore or sex, how fast will R2 alter the game to get a better rating?

good lord the BBFC creates more grief for itself than anything else...
@ Zippy:

For the umpteenth time, you've totally mischaracterised the BBFC. It's not about what it likes and what it doesn't like. Anyway, you're assuming that it doesnlt learn from it's mistakes - I very much doubt we'd see a repeat of Manhunt 2.

And anyway, if the BBFC are so bad, how come GTA IV has passed by with even less controversy in the UK than in the USA?
