Last week we were treated to
Jack Thompson's view of
Grand Theft Auto IV on the Glenn Beck program.
This evening we'll hear what should be quite a different perspective as Drs. Cheryl Olson and Lawrence Kutner, authors of
Grand Theft Childhood: The Surprising Truth About Violent Video Games will appear on Beck's show.
(CNN Headline News, 7PM & 9PM).
Comments
You are awesome hello fellow browncoat.
Nothing constructive will come out of this.
true. but at least he does not have sir jackington the 3rd to cover his ass this time.
This is going to turn out well.
Hopefully the authors will call Beck out on claiming that GTA has rape in it like he did in the Jacko show opener and correct the Cho lie that Jacko told.
I can imagine Jack Thompson, comparing them with nazis or child molesters, because for Jack, in his little mind, he thinks that everyone who protect videogames are child molesters.
Oh, the conspirancy!...
Do they like put implants in your head when you get these shows on TV or with Major Networks?
I really hope is the last one. He even can make a series about negative and positive impact of videogames, that should be good.
Maybe all the mails gamers have sended to him refering to the book have alerted him.
He will do his best to discredit them and hold himself up high.
Again, I don't need to see this, so I won't be watching, I'll just pick up the story tomorrow.
LOL
I Have You Now
Yea, I haven't lost my hope that all humans are naturally good inside, so here is hoping he will not be an ass and let the gaming community have their say. If he was a nobody, I would not care so much about what goes on on his show, but a few members of my family watch, and I know many people look to this guy to tell them what to think of stuff. How he handles this interview will decide what I think of him.

yes
Did you see us fight?
no
TRAP!
It's all about ratings, guys...
Then some of the massive respect I lost for him with the Jack Thompson interview will be restored. But not all of it, no.
This is what I expect from the Glen Beck show tonight. Hopefully, the Drs. are prepared and have some fire in thier guts. Don't let him talk down to, or over, you.
Memo to Rockstar Games:
You have lawyers; sue for slander. One successful lawsuit against one of these guys and your problems are solved. I'll bet more people follow the trial than the O.J. trial.
Classic.
Not like Beck has any standing on morality, to be honest - this is the guy who outright said he "hates" the 9/11 widows and Katrina victims, and openly said he wants to kill Michael Moore. Yes, as in kill kill. He also called Cindy Sheehan a "tragedy pimp" and a "prostitute", said he wants to "nuke" Iran, says that Mexico is "full fo criminals"... i could go on. He's a shameless, hateful bastard.
He'll just berate them and ignore any good points they have to make.
I could not read it anymore. If I wanted to read fiction I would read Harry Potter right now.
Beck is a entrainer his a talky head hes good at playing a crowd and works his base nicely.
At frist he was not pushing the fundie fud with all his might now adays he makes less sense, almost a speed up Brill'o so in 3 years he'll be just are burnt out and bitter and " lam'ba' and Brill.o
On a side note, anyone here who's in an AT&T U-Verse area should really get the service. I just set up a recording for the show from my desk at work. =)
Full Disclosure Dept: My wife works for AT&T and I'm a contractor that works on-site there.
They still won't be defending it because they'll be getting cut off every three seconds.
Of course, this news popped up just after I sent a letter to Beck this morning, decrying his previous biased 'Grand Theft Morality' segment.
Hitting a button which signals an airhorn at somebody, is not the same as shooting them in the face with a handgun, or getting into a fist fight. Hell, if I had an airhorn, I'd give the guy in the cube next to me an earful every hour on the hour...doesn't make me a violent person. Just makes me a dick!
;)
Glenn Beck tells them they're evil liberals.
When he first came on the air I found his show quite funny, but once election season kicked in late last year he seems to have become nothing more than a jerk with a swelled head.
I originally planned to only avoid the election based parts of his show mostly because he only wants to talk about Obamas reverand, which is a stupid non-issue now more than ever. Even tonight, the night before the Indiana and North Carolina primaries, the headline of his show is none other than the the Reverand and his effect on the election. If I recall last week when he had JT on he had a 10 minute montage of Rev. Wright too to boot. And yes, I am an Obama supporter if that wasn't obvious enough already, but can't vote as I am a Canadian citizen.
After he had JT on, I vowed to never watch again. However if he is at least reasonable during the interview tonight, I will change my mind. But I will still not watch the election parts though.
P.S. I am sure I am not the first to say this, but I want to see a debate between the autors of GTC and JT. It would be fun, that's for sure.
I did notice that on his book's page on Amazon that theres a gap of dates of reviews a few days after thursday.
Gift.
/facepalm
From his teasers it certainly doesn't look like he is going to be open to anything positive the authors of Grand Theft Childhood have to say...
Its not looking good for fair and balanced news reporting.....
You can't fight fairly against these people. It's best just to ignore them.
Isn't it lame that we live in a world where peaceful protest can get people labled as hate mail campaigners?
And after a recent remark from him I'm not suggest that instead of letters we send him boxes of rotten tomatoes. I could care less. If it makes his life slightly more annoying then I'm going to send him boxes of rotten tomatoes. The tomatoes represent his rotton attitude towards gamers.
When the author actually made a point contradicting Mr. Beck's claims, he just rolled his eyes.
PS: According to Glenn Beck, because us video gamers who are also blogging and discussing this on blogs... well, we're losers. Yeah.
He said again that there was nudity in it.
Also, he was talking about how he's worried that the hookers in GTA will warp a teenaged boys' view of women.
I think that if someone has trouble telling the difference between a real woman and one in a game, that person already has a warped view to start with.
Even though Glenn Beck is a prime example of how any nutjob can get a position in the news industry these days I don't think he would be "America's Next Jack Thompson."
Though if there was such a competition on Fox I bet he would come as a close runner up.
Hella. Has anyone here ever actually thought he was some sort of "threat"?
*raises hand*
All people on CNN are douche bags
See what I did there?
No but I'm just saying its fun how he formulates his show to be obviously unfair towards those on his show with opposing oppinons.
Also got to love how he expresses his oppinion on things on the same leve of a 6 year old.
Glen: They're loosers.
Very mature Glenn Beck.
Plus he gains notoriety from any articles that reference this show and his bias. Because some groups will still agree with him and see this as a bunch of angry 'losers' hitting out at people who don't agree.
Like I said, best to just ignore him.
I'm extremely glad I'm purchased Grand Theft Childhood on day one. Olson did great and pretty much owned Glenn when she stated that boys didn't even know you could pick up prostitutes. I don't know how many users on GamePolitics live in Southern California but Bill Handel from KFI interviewed the other author of the book around April 29. It's about a 10 minute listen if you choose to download it, but it's fair and millions listen to this station. Here it is:

Actually, there is some logic to that. The first is lowering prices by forcing the companies to reduce their profit margins. The second is lowering prices by increasing supply. The second is likely to be better in the long run (except to the environment, but that's a separate argument.)
Speaking of JT, there's been no update on his bar case. There was a letter online he tried to remove or defeat Judge Dava Tunis as a judge. Something sent to the police chief of Florida or sheriff. He said the video game 'violence' and pornography was her fault. What happened there? Is the judge off the case? Any word on this?
Honestly, my mom listens to his radio show and said he has changed a lot since he got the TV show.
she gladly informed me that he was whining yesterday about his wife not letting his son having toy guns, because "Boys will be boys" and if we didnt give them plastic guns they would pretend sticks were guns.
lmao, no digital violence, but plastic facsimiles of REAL guns are ok.
I implore one of these talking heads to have someone who is intelligent and actually knows about the game(Adam Sessler, Geoff Keeley, hell, even Adam Perrera) to be on
I got that same feeling too.
So there is "partial" nudity whatever that means. I topless partial or is a bikini partial?
I somewhat agree with you. We really need to step up our game. I agree with you about not sending out hate mail and not bookstorming. But what to do now?
Fully clothed "strippers" is pretty much it. Nothing more risque than you would see on any public beach.
Oh noes! Ban beaches!
Be upstanding citizens. That's it. That's all we gotta do. Unless we start acting like the sociopaths that we're expected to be, we can't lose.
Beck is just a sensational journalist trying to win viewers over with his "unique" view of politics and views on society. He makes brash statements and interjects personal bias on what he covers, and has guest speakers on that will agree with his viewpoints. Olsen was given almost no time to speak because it was a short segment, and she didn't agree with him, compared to the others on the program who got more time by appealing to his ego and agreeing with what he had to say.
I would have accepted the segment if he hadn't dismissed video gamers, and video gamers who blog, as idiots.
Upstanding citizens can e-mail him or his program with their views or comments. It might not do anything, and chances are will be dismissed, but if he has the ability to make social commentary on those of us watching, we have the ability to make social commentary on the one creating the content. Free speech.
But I do agree, hate mail and bookstorming are not options any civil person should do. It will only reinforce people like Beck's opinions on gamers in general.
It was a letter to the official entity responsible for supervising elections in which Jack claims Judge Tunis (who is up for re-election this year) shouldn't be allowed to run as an incumbent judge because she doesn't have a valid loyalty oath. However, Jack fails to mention that, if his claim is correct as to Judge Tunis, then neither would 99% of the other judges up for re-election. I suspect that Jack's letter will end up in the same place as his letters to the FBI do (i.e., the wastepaper basket).
(1) Arrogant and abusive. Clearly, not an honorable or ethical attitude towards others.
(2) Bigoted. A blind attitude towards a group of Humans based on a limited or ignorant view of those individuals based on some common factor. Whether it's a particular skin color, religion, sexuality, like of a particular type of music, genre of literature, sport, or any other number of factors. It is that limited or ignorant view of that comonality that makes him a bigot.
(3) The clear attempt to limit information from being passed to others. Clearly, he knew his argument cannot stand up to discussion. Either during his interviews where he prevents the opposing views from being as heard as his is. Morever, his complaint about bloggers discussing anything he is opposed to shows his desire to spread ONLY HIS view and not let opposing views be thoroughly heard.
Frankly, anything negative he has to say about me as an individual, especially since the previous 3 facts are in place regarding him, amounts to diddly squat.

Let him prattle. Or better yet, maybe we need a Point-Counter-Point to air on YouTube or something, similar to what Adam Sessler did after the NPR interview.
Beck has had his say and his arguments can't stand up to a real discussion, as I mentioned before in the other post. So, do it right back by publishing intelligent comments in the Public eye on video. Seems only fair. Especially since it's clear he doesn't operate fairly and has no intention to.

"I Am Me" by Virginia Satir
(Virginia came to write this poem when she was working with an angry fifteen-year-old girl who had a lot of questions about herself and what life meant.)
In all the world, there is no one exactly like me.
There are persons who have some parts like me,
but no one adds up exactly like me.
Therefore, everything that comes out of me
is authentically mine because I alone choose it.
I own everything about me
Therefore, everything that comes out of me
is authentically mine because I alone choose it.
I own everything about me
my body, including everything it does;
my mind, including all its thoughts and ideas;
my eyes, including the images of all they behold;
my feelings, whatever they may be...
anger,
joy,
frustration,
love,
disappointment,
excitement
my mouth, and all the words that come out of it
polite,
sweet or rough,
correct or incorrect;
my voice, loud or soft.
And all my actions, whether they be to others or to myself.
I own my fantasies, my dreams, my hopes, my fears.
I own all my triumphs and successes,
all my failures and mistakes.
Because I own all of me I can become intimately acquainted with me.
By doing so I can love me and be friendly with me in all parts.
I can then make it possible for all of me to work in my best interests.
I know there are aspects about myself that puzzle me,
and other aspects that I do not know.
But as long as I am friendly and loving to myself,
I can courageously and hopefully, look for solutions to the puzzles
and for ways to find out more about me.
However I look and sound, whatever I say and do, and whatever I think
and feel at a given moment in time is me.
This is authentic and represents where I am in that moment in time.
When I review later how I looked and sounded, what I said and did, and how I thought and felt, some parts may turn out to be unfitting.
I can discard that which is unfitting, and keep that which proved fitting,
And invent something new for that which I discarded.
I can see, hear, feel, think, say and do.
I have the tools to survive, to be close to others, to be productive,
and to make sense and order out of the world of people
and things outside of me.
I own me, and therefore I can engineer me.
I am me, and I am okay.

Kinda like Master Chief after the war. :)
I may be a loser but your a Wiener
I don't really see him as an enemy, just someone misinformed and playing to sensationalism, he's worried about losing his job >_>
Well whatever, hopefully parents heard her about her opinion and research.
If contacting him directly (Beck) is not working, we should contact his sponsors instead.
Instead of sending hate mail to Beck, we should send out the video of Beck attacking gamers to other gamers to help make them more aware of the anti-game bias thats out there.
We need to respond, but in a more clear and effective manner. Not in the same way we went after Cooper Lawrence. There are better ways to handle this situation. We need to use even more information than he uses, we need to be more clever and creative than he can EVER be. We must show him that us "losers" can easily out class him. Having class will be the key to successly handle this guy.
Not really, closest you get are strippers in g-strings with giants Xs over they're breasts.
He needs to lose his job and be forced to work at Burger King.
Also, where do people get the idea that GTA IV objectifies women? If anything, Niko has more respect for women than any character in any medium in recent years.
Glen Beck is an idiot.
She was awesome, and Glenn Beck. Is this guy even for real? After she had a very good well though out explanation he then makes the comment "These video game bloggers are talking about me..." I mean WHERE did that come from? That had NOTHING to do with the discussion that they were just having!! LOL The author lady had that "UHH WTF, OK." look on her face like, why did you just make that comment.
Hahaha she made Beck look like a fucking idiot.

It makes sense, PG-13 movies make more money than R rated movies because they are accessible to a wider audience, and games that appeal to a wide age range sell better than mature titles.
