Gamers spend about $30,000 on games and hardware between 18-48, according to data released this morning by GameStrata.
The provider of online tools and statistical data surveyed North American gamers. Of the results, GameStata exec Barry Dorf said:
The overwhelming majority of gamers are spending their time online with friends, building their reputation and online personas. Video games are becoming so much more than a momentary diversion; gaming is becoming yet another means of community building...
GameStrata also reaches some interesting conclusions concerning digital downloads:
A strong correlation between the frequency of digital purchases and Xbox 360 ownership suggests that the Xbox 360 is the preferred console for the consumption of digital content... The move toward the microtransaction revenue model is also a notable trend, with 85% of respondents confirming the purchase of a virtual good in the last month.

Annually...right?
Well that number seems awfully low but I only have one word to describe this DUUUUUUH!!!!! I spend that much between My card games/d&d/Magic the gathering and video games a year not to mention when there is a new system that might be worth it and the last two years of AAA titles. I think I need a new hobby Like rebuilding cars it is less expencive LOL
I would have believed this 10 years ago. Then I found out about torrents. Take that, statistics!
i'm using news groups
$30K? Cheapskates.
Does that number include secondary purchases such as surround sound systems primarily for gaming use, HDTVs, gaming swag (clothing, figurines, etc.) and such?

I need to take up walking so I don't spend that 30k on video games....and save it for a nice car ;)
Xbox 360 is NOT the "preferred console for the consumption of digital content". Console owners download minigames and DLC through Live, PSN, etc. If you start counting movies and music on top of that, PC is, and always will the preferred method to download digital content.
In other words, roughly $1000 per year. On the whole, given the amount of time generally devoted to games, that's not a bad investment. Better than some other leisure activities, that's for sure.
I will exceed that number. I spent over 5,000 grand last year alone on video games. I wont reach that high this year but I will still easily hit around 2,000.
