PETA Targets Lobster Game

Uh, hold the surf  & turf…

Animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has protested a Colorado sports bar’s arcade-like claw game in which diners attempt to snag a live lobster. As reported by Denver Daily:

[PETA] says it is cruel and unusual to keep the lobsters in the Lobster Zone tank only to be boiled alive.

“JD’s Lobster Zone machine turns torture and death into a game, pure and simple,” said PETA Vice President Tracy Reiman.

In case you’re wondering, Lobster Zone works just like any other claw game. For $2, patrons have a chance to move the remote-controlled metal claw inside the tank, place it over a live lobster, and as the machine says, “You catch ‘em, we cook ‘em.”

Bar owner Dennis McCann told the newspaper that he will remove the game, but didn’t understand the uproar:

I don’t know what the difference is between my place and a King Soopers that has a lobster tank other than the way the lobsters are harvested out of the tank… Life’s too short to put my energy toward this. On the one side, I hate that someone is doing this to me. But on the other side, I’ll take the high road to make sure my customers are happy.

Meanwhile, Cosmo’s Weird, Wacky, Wonderful World reports that Lobster Zone machines, made by Florida-based Apopka, are in more than 300 locations in the United States.

I don’t get why they are so concerned over this stuff in a damn video game. If they want to whine over how an unintelligent lobster gets prepared, let them do it in an actual resteraunt where they can get humiliated, rather than on the interwebs where they just get tons of facepalms…

  2. King of Fiji ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

Once again I’m not siding with PETA but its just that it seems better to plot the poor lobster in the boiling water and getting it over with than dangling the poor guys to their death.

And this is the oppinion of a meat eater so that makes my oppinion 20% more valid and less bias than any PETA veggie head.

  3. cppcrusader says:

He shouldn’t have buckled so easily to them.  That claw game is no different than the lobster tank at an upscale restaurant, except here the lobster actually has a chance to stall its eventual fate.

Apopka is the town in Florida where the company that makes the game is located, not the name of the company itself.

  4. King of Fiji ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

Its not that I’m siding with PETA but atleast let the lobster die quick and with dignity by plopping the sucker in the boiling pot and get it over with.   Just my oppinion though.

  5. Krono says:

Explain EXACTLY how this is torture?

I’d imagine they’re referring to the ‘boil alive’ part here.

  6. HelplessDoom ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

I watched this and first laughed! It’s so horribly funny. I’m not an animal hater or anything, but the game looks like something i would have seen on Family Guy.

As Far as PETA is concerned, they actually hurt their cause more than help animals. They euthanises 85% of the animals it takes in. Whereas the SPCA finds homes for 73% of their take-ins.  F*** PETA. AND the head of peta uses medications that were made from animal by-products or tested on animals. she said, "I need to keep myself healthy to protect the animals." What hypocrites the PETA are.

The percentages are public record and her quote was form Penn and Tellers Showtime series "BullSh!t".

  7. Krono says:

Unfortunately, however, whenever you’re talking about animal welfare and mention the name ‘PETA’, the focus of the conversation immediately shifts from le’t’s reduce animal suffering’ to ‘I hate those holier-than-thouh PETA arseholes!’

That’d be because PETA is a bunch of would be ecoterrorists, and there are much better organizations that accomplish much more for animals than PETA.

That that’ve actually managed to accomplish some good along the way does not negate their bad qualities.

  8. Brokenscope says:

i think you pay for a chance at getting a lobster at a very reduced price.

I’m pretty sure you can still just tell your waiter "I’d like a lobster tail please".

  9. Joel Why ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

I’m not a big fan of PETA’s tacticts, but it’s hard to argue with their results.  They’ve managed to secure better conditions for animals at many factor farms by protesting major fast food chains.  Unfortunately, however, whenever you’re talking about animal welfare and mention the name ‘PETA’, the focus of the conversation immediately shifts from le’t’s reduce animal suffering’ to ‘I hate those holier-than-thouh PETA arseholes!’

  10. Zero Beat ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

The only thing I find objectionable about this is that someone could get a tiny lobster or no lobster at all, while someone else could get a big lobster.  This is why they usually make you pay for the weight of the lobster.

What I want is to eat a lobster, not to have a chance to maybe eat a lobster.

  11. Yuuri ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

It’s not a lie. All you have to do is look at their tax records. Part of their expences for a time included a large (10’x10 aprox size) walking cooler/freezer. The type that is used to keep/store meat or cadavers. Why would they need something like that?

I’ve lost the links, but there is evidence that PETA has taken animals from shelters, promising the shelters that the animals were going to good homes. Only instead of going to homes, they (the animals) were euthanized within 24 hrs of being taken from the shelter and dumped into garbage bins.

  12. cppcrusader says:

Still, the lobster has to stay somewhere until that time.  The only difference between this and the typical lobster tank at a restaurant or grocery store is how they’re retrieved from the tank.  Their end is still the same, their general treatment is still the same.  The only dangling comes from the lobster escaping the claw, and a plastic claw that’s designed to fail most of the time isn’t going to cause it any harm.

In fact, the lobsters in that game probably live longer than any other lobster in a restaurant or grocery tank.  I can understand the guy not wanting to deal with the headache that PETA causes, but personally I would have told them to piss off.

  13. shady8x says:

People for the Eating of Tasty Animals or PETA should shut up.

Why should we protect the evil animals that eat helpless living beings known as plants???

    anyway CRABS???

Serioulsy there is a reason why most people think peta is retarded…

  14. Yuuri ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

PETA are a bunch of hypocrits of the worst sort. They take animals from shelters, promising to find them good homes, only to turn around and kill them. Why you might ask, because they feel that owning an animal as a pet is demeaning to the animal in question. They feel it is better for the animal to be dead, than in a loving home.

  15. HunterD says:

Giving rational people who care about animals a bad name since 1980.

Also, to all those who worry about Animals feeling suffering, please do realize nature is not a Disney movie

Outside of animals with no natural predators (like Elephants) no one dies of old age in nature.

They are eaten alive by predators.

Unless of course you want to do like the Futurama PeTA and force the lion to eat tofu.

  16. Deadman Reaper says:

Two words Red Lobster pick and eat your lobster.

and to the Eviro-Freaks out there I understand your stance but Would you all go F*** off You all have already made it dangerous to own a house in cali since you can’t clean your lawn properly making it a fire hazard, Helped drive gas prices through the roof with "lets not drill for the resources" and have been helping take away personal property rights for years. Green Peace, I am all for save the planet but not at the cost of destroying it not everything is bad somethings are good to get rid of and burn.   Peta, Lets all save the animals but have any of you veggie heads heard of "SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST" it is the way of nature adapt or die BY THE WAY no offence to all the vegetarians and vegans out there nothing wrong with that but Homosapians are OMNIVORES we eat whatever is edible our bodies are designed to do that so more power to you if you don’t eat meat or any product coming from an animal But don’t look at me orf anyother person bad because we do.

    Anyways thats my rant

P.s everytime you eat a salad somewhere a rabbit dies a little inside……..

  17. kurisu7885 (can't log in) says:

Yes if anyone, ANYONE else at all walked out of a pharmacy with meidcation they NEEDED that has been known to have animal by products in it or was tested on animal, then the PETA members would surround the person, whip the medication out of their cart, and stomp on it until it’s no longer usable, then proceed to throw red paint on people.

  18. Joel Why ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

This is utter nonsense.  PETA is not against owning pets such as dogs.  I’m no fan of PETA, but I don’t think that excuses spreading lies about the organization.

  19. Jim says:

My sister played this game in a bowling alley in Taiwan almost 10 years ago. PETA isn’t very timely.

  20. Kajex says:

I would totally play this game, if I knew I could win it. Also, I’m not sure how this is any different from fishing.

PETA has always had a problem with playing with animals before they’re devoured- but I’ve yet to see them protesting a Cheetah when it maims an animal, and then passes it to the cubs so they can play with it and train their ability to kill. This is less about them having any real point, and more about concentrated "BAWW" because somebody packs a ham-and-cheese sandwich instead of just a cheese sandwich.

Just remember- millions of animals are killed each year during wheat harvests. Wonderbead is about as pure as a bloodstained butcher’s apron.

  21. kurisu7885 (can't log in) says:

And I should have watched the video sooner. The lobsters can easily squirm free of the claw it seems, so I fail to see the problem.

  22. kurisu7885 (can't log in) says:

Running into school pep rallies throwing blood on kids and taking aprt i nthe same abuse they’d give death threats over.

  23. MonkeyPeaches ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

Anyone remember the South Park episode "Douche and Turd" I bet ya PETA is secretly in real life just like they are in the episode.

  24. Anonymous says:

There’s a neat Penn and Teller "Bullshit!" episode that has some really high up ranking PETA rep basically saying pet ownership is enslavement and should be abolished. And tax trails showing PETA has directly  funded firebombing ecoterrorists.

  25. Grendal says:

“Pet ownership is an absolutely abysmal situation brought about by human manipulation.” Ingrid Newkirk, national Director, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA), Just Like Us?” Harper’s, August 1988, p. 50.

Mind you that may not be the standard of all of P.E.T.A’s members (and newkirks has mellowed slightly, she would allow animals from shelters to be pets, but no pet shops and no breeding anymore) but it still boils down to being against owning of pets by human beings.Yes she is not the whole of petas membership, but who you have represent you says alot about who you are.

  26. Yuuri ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

It’s more of they (PETA) want the production of said medications stopped being made/researched.

  27. Ken ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

Apparently those idiots at PETA have never played a REAL claw game. Real ones are a pain in the ass to win, and the amount you spend trying to get a lobster there, you could go to a supermarket, pick one up there, and cook em when you get home.

  28. Freyar says:

I had mixed feelings about the ‘game’ there. The possibility for injury is there with a mechanic like that (low, but it still is there). However at the same time, as far as PETA goes, they just cause me to roll my eyes. They may have mellowed out now, but that doesn’t change the fact that they support violet eco-terrorism groups like the ALF (currently reading Terrorists or Freedom Fighters: Reflections of Animal Liberation). Even worse is that PETA and the ALF are somehow managing to penetrate into schools. Of course, Penn and Teller’s show did scare me a decent amount too, teaching kids how to make basic explosives on top of talking about attacking research labs etc.

That is all beside the point however. PETA is a rediculous group that has no real authority to be saying anything about things like this. Medication, Medical Work, and even food help keep people from dieing every day (including Newkirk herself). PETA just seems to be a self-loating group only at a species level.

—- There is a limit for both politicians against video games, and video games against politicians.

  29. Lavarock says:

Behold, the majestic lobster, galloping across the depths of the ocean. Noble, poised, it lifts its mighty pincers towards curious approaching fish- foreboding, yet collected. Sifting through the sand, the crustacean gathers its daily meal, tasting, discerning, nourishing. The crustacean’s bold, sanguine carapace contrasts sharply with the ocean floor in the white glow of the team’s cameras, one spectacular element of this colorful array of life. Now it thrusts itself along the bottom, sand whisking out from underneath in a flurry of white speckles. What it seeks on the outskirts of this reef are steeped in mystery, locked from human perception, as perhaps it should be. Night begins to fall, and he settles beneath a rock, awaiting the flourishing return of day.

  30. some guy ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

So wait….between bitching about Jessica Simpson’s t-shirt, getting one restaurant out of 300 to get rid of this specific type of lobster tank that isn’t any more harmful than a regular one (this really does nothing to deter people from cooking lobster the way they always have), and putting faux naked women in cages (wearing flesh-colored tank tops, how daring!), has PETA actually done anything significant in recent years? It seems like the other animal rights groups are the one accomplishing things, while PETA just continues to make a joke out of itself.

Also, if I remember correctly lobsters do not a have a central nervous system, and thus feel no pain. Same thing with crabs.

  31. Anonymous says:

PETA = People for the Eating of Tastey Animals …..Lobsters are tastey, so I fail to see the problem.

  32. Twin-Skies ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

They’re delicious. Although from where I come from, crabs are a more easily available (not to mention cheaper) alternative. Spiny lobsters in particular are tasty.

  33. PitViper401 says:

I agree completely with L42yB.  The lobsters will live longer in that tank because, as every one knows, every freakin’ crane game in the world is rigged

PETA are just idiots with loud voices, the ASPCA is the group that actually cares more about the animals than the attention.

  34. mogbert says:

So where is the line between keeping lobsters in a fish tank to eat and putting a craine game on said tank?

I’d like to call BS on this line: "JD’s Lobster Zone machine turns torture and death into a game, pure and simple."

No, what it is doing is offering smart lobsters a stay of execution. Explain EXACTLY how this is torture? These lobsters aren’t in there cowering, afraid for their lives. I’m fairly empatethic, I cried at the end of Ol’ yeller, but I don’t make the mistake to think that everything in this world has the same emotions as people. Most fish, and I’m sure lobsters, take the world as they currently see it because they don’t have a long enough memory or attention span to compare their situation to a previous one. They don’t pine for the fjords!

In the end, they would just like us all to be vegitarians. I think they should get back to saving lions and tigers and bears (pause for audience to complete the previous quote) and leave our food alone.

PS: I grew up on the water, them lobsters are just getting what they deserve! Arrrg!

  35. Yuuri ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

I’ll admit I got my information on that from my ex who grew up in Maine.

As for the nail, the time it takes maybe? Or mess? From what I have been told about the cooking, as soon as the head is in the water, it’s dead.

  36. Yuuri ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

The reason they are put into boiling alive, is that you have to be very carefull when cooking crab and lobster. They can’t be dead for much more than moments before they hit the pot or else they can give the eater food poisoning. The lobster is pretty much dead as soon as it hits the water.

  37. EmeraldDragon says:

Speaking as someone who has never been boiled alive, of course.

As to your claim that a lobster that isn’t boiled alive will give food poisioning, I’d love to see you back that up with fact.

And even if it is true — which I highly doubt — would it be so hard to put a penny nail through the poor things brain before chuncking it into the water?

  38. grls-r-gamers-2 says:

I’m not claiming that it’s not true, but how do we know that they’re dead the second they hit the water?  Everyone says it, but I’ve never seen actual proof.  Did somebody drop a live lobster into boiling water, then pull it out and check whether it was alive?

  39. PHOENIXZERO says:

With the nuts in that group they’d probably break in and "free" the lobsters and this burn the place down. >_>

    Hell, they still might.

  40. Belgarion89 says:

If it was me, I’d have just left the game up and advertised it more with the phrase "PETA hates this game" or something.  Most people know not to give PETA the smallest shred of credibility.  They’re like JT if he was an environmentalist.

So speak I, some random guy.

  41. Ran Hakubi says:

Seriously? This is what has PeTA’s panties in a bunch? I’m with the dude on this one. Never mind the fact that lobsters are boiled alive to kill ’em and cook ’em. And the fact that they don’t feel a thing.

  42. the1jeffy says:

I do.  I was a lobster in another life, PETA thug.

    ~~All Knowledge is Worth Having~~

  43. L42yB says:

The "live" lobster thing is so that they are cooked fresh…  I personally don’t like the fact that they aren’t killed before they are boiled, however I have no problem with the game mechanic for pulling them out the tank.  As someone already said, the lobsters actually have a better chance of living a bit longer 🙂

    — mostly harmless

  44. Aliasalpha says:

I’ve never got the whole live lobster thing, I suppose there are some people who feel the need to gloat at a powerless crustacean but this seems like a waste of technology that should be stealing your spare change & failing to pick up fuzzy toys or other cheap crappy things you’ll never look at twice.

  45. Anonymous says:

The owner of the bars must have no idea who PETA are or he wouldn’t have paid them any attention.

  46. Frogfucius says:

Those lobsters have a better chance at living in this claw machine than in a regular tank.
