Jack Thompson Plays it For Laughs on Jace Hall Show

The much-anticipated Jace Hall Show segment with game-hatin’ Florida attorney Jack Thompson is now live…

Clearly, as Thompson has suggested, the episode was scripted for laughs.

  1. Shadow Darkman Anti-Thesis of Jack Thompson says:

I happen to KNOW I’m not as much a nutter as JT seeing as I don’t claim video games are the reason why VT, NIU, or even Columbine happened. QFT, bitch. Again, YOU FAIL AT LIFE.

  2. Anonymous says:

Let me get this straight, you spend your free time stalking a guy online, your SN includes the name of the chap your obsessed with, your sig is written all in caps and also references that guy, you have issues with people who so much as hold a view contrary to your obbession and you tell people they fail at life.

You ever think your as much of a nutter as JT is?

  3. Shadow Darkman Anti-Thesis of Jack Thompson says:

You fail again. You ever hear of the ancient saying "Know thine enemy" dude? It kinda applies here. As for me, I know that JT-sympathizers FAIL AT LIFE.  Now BEGONE, lest the mighty Ban Hammer should come down on you.

(Not claiming to be an admin. Just that this kind of people are annoying.)

  4. Santos says:

HAHAHAHA. Seriously guys. You’re more adamant talking about an old man that is trying to mess with your deeply ingrained perceptions than one of the most delicious cans outside of porn and the woman it’s attached to.

  5. Shadow Darkman Anti-Thesis of Jack Thompson says:

"Oh give JT a break, this was actually really funny. If you put your sniping and grievence aside for a second you might even enjoy it too."

  6. Shadow Darkman Anti-Thesis of Jack Thompson says:

    I share that doubt.

I have a feeling that JT will attempt to have all video games, regardless of rating, banned AT LEAST in the United States, all while trying to point the Finger Of Blame at them being the reason why the Columbine, Heath High School, Virginia Tech, NIU, and later school shootings, all happened.

If it does happen, it’ll prove a lot of gamers-who-draw-webcomice correct about him.

  7. Ouroboros says:

Being nuts doesn’t meen he can’t be a troll as well. However, crappy trolls are the ones who roll up and post a few 4-chan memes before getting whacked with the ban-hammer. Great trolls are the ones who skirt the boundried of acceptable and infuriaate a community, but don’t quite do anything bad enough to get thrown out.

  8. Firebird ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

You’d figured if he was aware that he was doing a comedic parody of himself, and known of the crap he put everyone through as he went along this sketch (or is it?), that he may be an undecover agent of the video game community.

Honest to god, this the only thing I can think of that can keep all blood flow from going to my brain and suffocating my body.

  9. Erik ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

Jack has threatened the people here multiple times.  Including trying to sick the secret service on us as well as trying to threaten us with litigation for not giving him our home addresses.  And we could only begin to fathom the harassment he puts Dennis through.  So no, Jack gets no breaks.

  10. Mike Skolnik says:

Jack’s deadpan delivery made that seem utterly surreal (rather than just bizarre).

I enjoyed parts of it, though I think bits of it could have been scripted better as well. I’m more curious, like many others (I surmise), as to why Jack bothered with doing this. Maybe he’ll even deign to tell us. From Jack’s perspective, was this a PR coup, was it just for chuckles, was there some other reason entirely?

  11. Anonymous says:

Oh give JT a break, this was actually really funny. If you put your sniping and grievence aside for a second you might even enjoy it too.

  12. ecco6t9 ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

Based on the Zelda scene we now know that Jack wanted Bully early just so he could beat it.

  13. Erik ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

Meh.  Thompson is at his funniest when he isn’t trying to be.  Remember when he demanded that Take-Two give him an advance copy of Bully for review as though either he had any precedence to do so or his review even being worth a damn.

  14. Zero Beat ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

They’d say something like, "If you noticed her, you’re a pig that just wants to get in her pants!"  or "If you didn’t notice her, you’re a chauvinist that only thinks men are worth watching on TV!"

  15. CenturionRyan says:

That was pretty funny. As much as we all love to hate JT, the man’s usual demeanour makes it all the more hilarious.

  16. Trevor McGee says:

Wow Jack way to not look like you’re reading cue cards, lol. This guy is seriously insane. By parodying himself he acknowledges that he’s essentially full of crap. Admittedly it was funny though, in a eerie way.

  17. Anthrax says:

You know what? I think some microscopic sliver of respect just popped back into life the moment I watched that video. I still hate JT’s guts, but that was pretty funny. At the same time though, you know his career’s reached an all time low when he has to get money doing comedy skits for the people he hates most.

  18. Anonymous says:

I’m confused, freaking totally.  Jack Thompson has a twisted sense of humor?  For him to satire himself that would mean he understands the extremes of his actions previously.  WTF?  I’m confused.

  19. jadedcritic says:

I would question the effectiveness of a man trying to parody himself, when he has no idea how funny his normal behavior is. Just so I’m clear, was he being figurative?

(Wonder if Jace Hall paid him to do that.  Wonder how much)

  20. gameman9 says:

Why did he take the controller from the guy playing zelda and started playing himself?

I’m laughing as i type this.

  21. thefremen says:

Didn’t he make similar statements while being completely serious no more than 3 months ago?

  22. GRIZZAM PRIME says:

Do you really think he wants to keep certain games away from children? Just children? I strongly doubt he would stop there.

  23. sortableturnip says:

I did but I didn’t want any of the fat chicks from the fat princess thread to say anything

    ***END JOKE***

  24. Conejo says:

of course, it should be restated that almost nobody disagrees with Thompson’s intent, just with his methods.

if he had been civil, he’d be an ok guy to have around.

Here are we — and yonder yawns the universe.

  25. DavCube ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

Well, there’s one good thing out of this: it once again proves his hypocricy. "I can make fun of you all i want, but make fun of me? LUDICROUS! It damages me! I’ll sue you! HOOAH!"

  26. VenomandCarnage says:

Okay, I really don’t like the man, but I got to give  JT props here for doing this.  This actually made me laugh and I got to give him credit for willing to make fun of himself at least a little.

  27. Ouroboros says:

Its because he is the one troll to end all trolls. Seriously, he is the troll god… he is what all trolls aspire to be some day.

  28. ooftygoofty says:

It doesn’t so much bother me, in and of itself, that Jack can be charming on occasion.  Lots of insane and truly dangerous people can do that.  What leaves me absolutely flummoxed is that Jack has no idea when to do this.  So from time to time he makes himself seem likeable to his sworn enemies that he’s threatened countless times, but never once in court to SAVE HIS OWN ASS?

    I don’t get it.  I just . . . don’t.

  29. Anonymous says:

If only he had refrained from performing his comedy act outside of comedic venues, he might never have been threatened with disbarment.

  30. Saladin ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

I may mock your ridiculous failure of a law career Jack, but this made me laugh quite a bit.

    ……I feel dirty inside.

  31. Austin_Lewis says:

I think he may have been joking less than you would think…

Jack Thompson is mentally unstable, after all, as evidenced by his veiled threat to blow up a building.

  32. HarmlessBunny says:

I snickered here and there. Thought the best parts were when he took GTA from the kid and give him his book. Oh and the Zelda scene…

  33. Anonymous says:

Come on, Jack isn’t a troll because he fails it as one, is NUTS, and knows enough just to keep testing the limits of what he can get away with.

  34. laserbeam says:

It was amusing and people need to lighten up. You act as if Video Games are the one great freedom and right we have that is threatened. Lets worry about that little thing called the Constitution that consistently is used to wipe butts in washington. Wont need to worry about Video Games if that keeps up.

As serious as jack has been in the past regarding people parodying him you would almost think hes a Joke character all along out for the Lulz.

  35. El Barto says:

Wow.  That was actually really funny.  Jack, if you’re reading this, you might have a better chance at reaching the gaming community if you’re willing to engage us on a more regular basis without being patronizing and confrontational.  Obviously there’s not a 100% consensus on this, but a surprising number of people here reacted positively.

  36. Vinzent ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

He’s probably hoping that humor will save his career. Remember, JT is Two-Face without the coin.

  37. Muninn says:

in the words of mal from firefly: "My days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle"

  38. Adam Santos says:

That was absolutely hilarious. 5 stars for Jack Thompson, I think he has a real future in comedy. I laughed out loud multiple times! Bravo Jack!

  39. David Cat says:

I’m really confused now. If that was scripted, which it blatantly was, why did Jackass do it? Was it to make the gaming community want to lynch him less? If so, we can add naivety to his rap sheet.

  40. Tarosan says:

Despite this just now we all know that he’s still going to be a homeless old man and we would lol and hate him for taking our freedom of choice away.

  41. Joel says:

Honestly, I’ve been of the opinion that Jack has been deliberately playing his whole career for laughs for a long time.

    He’s the world’s premiere troll.

I was just surprised to see him do something which is so overtly comedic. Normally he just pulls stunts which verge on crossing the line (or, more likely, vault clear over it) to maintain his profile while ensuring that no one with any sense will ever take him seriously. If anyone did take him seriously he’d swiftly shoot himself in the foot somehow (as we saw not long ago with his bridgeburning when a law he’d penned was close to passing). It’s a testament to his skill that he’s only threatened with disbarment now, after so many decades of utter nonsense.

That’s just what I think, of course. I’ve never dealt with him directly, so I can’t really speak with the same kind of authority as Dennis (though I can argue my greater objectivity, but even I’m not convinced by that).

  42. Anonymous says:

Just reminds me of a ‘deathbed confession’, that wonderful belief that simply adding ‘… but I didn’t really mean it!’ absolves the acts of an entire lifetime.

    No buyers here.

  43. Dog Welder says:

I’m going to agree with several above that this was not funny.  Amusing, perhaps.  But not funny.  I think it’s pretty safe to say that Jace Hall and Jack Thompson won’t be on Saturday Night Live any time soon (although, that show is also not funny at this point).

And as far as giving Jack a break…nope.  Not going to happen.  O.J. Simpson was hilarious in those Naked Gun movies, and he went on to kill two people.  Should we give him a break?

  44. Jess-O says:

We dont hate him for what he says and stands for. The media needs it opponents and controls. we hate him for abusing his power as an attorney for harrasing and threatening people inocents of crime. He abused his power and "fame" to the "best" of his advantage. and basically acted ike a temper tantrummed child.

And like someone above posted, Making fun of himself hurts his cause, which proves hes not in it for the moral fiber, he’s a cash grubbing spotlight runner.

  45. Christophe Janson ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

Lol the funny thing is i didn’t think he was acting until he gave his book to that random kid… He is really good, if he just realised that he could make a lot of money on movies or tv shows. Cause honestly, no one respects him in the law and order world anymore.

  46. Ace ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

Apparently a short step between a law career and a "lawl" career.

    Still wish him ill though…

  47. joshdavis271 ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

Wow jack has a sense of humor I’m impressed. It’s nice to see his human side.

I I laughed my ass off at the part where jack took gta4 and the $50 from the kid.

  48. Mikel says:

Wow, good on Jack for being a good sport for once. That’s actually a pretty impressive deadpan delivery.

  49. Michael Chandra ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

Sure, he made the right comments, and he does it with a straight face. But what scares me, and probably is the reason others also feel uncomfortable, is that he said similar stuff, only a bit less extreme, with a straight face as well. And was serious.

If it had been anyone else, or if I hadn’t read so many things about Jack, I’d find it quite amusing. The jokes were good at times. But it’s Jack, and there’s 169 pages that make clear the face behind the mask. And that’s why I just can’t enjoy this parody.

  50. Anonymous says:

"I dont want to take away their options, i just want to make sure they have no options."

In all honesty it was a bit uncomfortable watching Jack. Made me wonder how much of the stuff said he actually believes and what parts were scripted. And why he would even do this except for the attention.

  51. Alvin says:

You gotta admit, Jack is a great actor, both on screen and on the court.

He really shouldn’t combine the two.

  52. Anonymous says:

I’m surprised Mr. Thompson hasn’t taken a stance against Spore. Just, in GTA you can kill a few people, but in Spore you can commit galactic genocide!

  53. xfirestormx says:

this was pretty funny. i laughed out loud in a few parts.

you know, a lot of people hate jack thompson for what he says and stands for, but i think its really just a generational gap. anything that he does will be undone by the next generation. a lot of older people think the same way, just because its foreign and scary to them. its good to see that he has a sense of humor though.

he believes one thing, you believe another. no reason to bad mouth him. take the higher road and politely disagree (i know many of you do, but some people genuinely hate his guts, and are very vocal about it).

  54. Anonymous says:

He was serious for the first part.  Once it got to the kid buying the game, then it was a joke.

  55. black manta says:

I just saw this after getting home.  I’m with Ben and Jadedcritic.  This was funny…how?

I’ll admit, I got a chuckle out of the part when Jack ripped the controller out of the guy’s hands, but it stopped there.  Maybe his lines were scripted.  Maybe they weren’t.  But I don’t doubt he meant every word he said, whether or not it was intended to be funny.  If he smiled when he said those things, then I might feel differently.  Jack has proved he has a self-deprecating – if somewhat underdeveloped – sense of humor.  But it was more in evidence when I saw him in the debate with Lorne Lanning at the VGXpo.  Here, I thought, he seemed too damn sincere.

At the end of the day, he is still an arrogant, hateful, bigoted man.  When the segment was over, all I could do was snort and say, "Douchebag."

Once a douchebag, always a douchebag.

  56. Ben says:

Why don’t you people understand that he is just doing this for money and attention? For all of you people who think he wants to become the next Colbert, no, he isn’t going to have a future as a comedian!

Did you all miss the story where he said he "Wants to be back on the GTA scene." In other words, he just waiting for the opprotunity where he gets the chance to try to bail out a murderer on the basis that he played GTA.

Vinzent is right. He is two face without the coin.

Don’t let one show segment fool you all into thinking that Thompson has changed. I wish he would, but it’s just not going to happen.

  57. sortableturnip says:

Don’t know why this was deleted before…

I just would like to see all of the footage of the interview…I think it would shed more light onto the reason why he decided to do this.

Also, I would like to know if there were any stipulations of him doing this interview…likt if he had to do those skits…

  58. Mythgarr ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

This was filmed at the Plan & Trade less than a mile from my house.

Too bad I wasn’t there the day of filming.

  59. Alex ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

Well, it appears Thopmson’s interview was comedic than I anticipated.  Still a crepy guy, though.

  60. ooftygoofty says:

Maybe they should do a follow-up where Jack gives a free pass to a parent who abuses their kid but won’t let them play video games and then heckles a gamer’s funeral.

  61. Darren Wilkinson says:

Ok him being funny in this doesn’t change the fact that he’s been unreasonable and damaging to individuals before. Likewise his previous conduct, no matter how appalling, doesn’t change the fact that he’s funny here.

That said I think the scene was scripted for him and I doubt he improvised much if anything. This is a mile ahead of the usual Yoo got no brainz type of stuff he usually posts here.

  62. kurisu7885 (can't log in) says:

I agree. This one show segment doesn’t change the past, which is stacked highly against Thompson.

  63. Anonymous says:

So no. He dosent get any breaks.

Now that is the TRUTH.  I know I am always mentioning his hypocrisy, but another good example would be his lame attempt at satire with "A modest video game proposal."

Here he has a game all about killing people in the game industry, including Take Two CEOs(which there is no real attempt to disguise their names).  Yet this is a guy who would consider such a death threat, like that one buddy icon and that one incident where someone asked him what games he should train with.

Another example of him not taking a joke, the way he handled his receiving of some sexual lubricant or related medical cream which was obviously a roundabout way of calling him for what he is…

I don’t see how people can laugh at someone who can spew such garbage at others as a "joke," yet they scream, threaten lawsuits, etc when they are the butt of one!  Even more so when they have seriously said similar things in the past…

  64. Ben says:

Those of you who are complimenting Jack and saying we should give him a break are sorely misguided. It sickens me that you would compliment Jack after all of the things he has done.

Remember when he made fun of Gamerdad after he had a heart attack? Or how about when Kuja committed suicide? Do you really think Jack deserves a break just because he can be funny?

We’ve known for a long time that Jack can be charming when he wants to be. He is a snake. Remember when jack called the Mass Effect controversy ridiculous? Everyone was like "See, Jacks not so bad!"

Then a week later he tried to link video games to a school shooting, and everyone finally realized that jack is a lying sack of garbage.

So no. He dosent get any breaks.

  65. Anonymous says:

I only thought the fact that he took the kids $50 was pretty funny – it cracked a smile on my face.

Other than that, but other than that…It was meh.

  66. Anonymous says:

Im not sure if it was some kind of joke on JT’s part….

Or if he REALLY thinks what he said there.

  67. Paul T. Farinelli says:

I didn’t say he wasn’t a prick, just that he happened to be funny in this clip.

  68. Anonymous says:

I do have to agree with you there. I had a mild chuckle here and there, but for the most part was just meh. Deadpanning jokes is not bad. However Jack just felt like cardboard in it.

Besides it was not funny years ago when those jokes were actual threats he leveled at us and threatened us with lawsuits…

  69. jadedcritic says:

Think you guys who are claiming it’s funny are being a tad generous.  Amusing maybe.  Personally, I thought it never topped when he gave the kid a copy of his book. (that was amusing).  I guess, for me though, the humor strains a little bit when he threatens to run us down and kill us.  It isn’t that it’s not obvious it’s a joke – it’s just that, well…  What do you suppose Jack would’ve done if the tables had been turned?  Imagine it was any of us on the video and we jokingly threatened to kill him.  How do you suppose he would’ve reacted.  If my memory serves me he’s had, or tried to have, multiple people arrested for the same thing.  What’s the difference?  Because it’s the Jace Hall show?  So if any of us had ended up on a national show and then threatened him, he would’ve thought that was OK?

The hypocrisy kills much of the potential humor for me.  Plus, I got the sense that Jack didn’t get the humor; that he was just reading his lines. By contrast, I saw a Colbert report the other day where he was taking a poke at Ben and Jerry and Elton John, and you could tell; Stephen couldn’t keep a straight face through the whole joke.  That was funny.

  70. Laughing Man says:

This reminds me of the Eva Braun home videos that showed Hitler smiliing.  It humanizes him a bit but you still have to remember what a prick he is.

  71. Paul T. Farinelli says:

I’m not particularly fond of Thompson, but I must admit that he hade me laughing during that clip. So kudos on that Jack.

  72. G-Nash says:

😐 He has a sense of humour 😐

It actually sounds like he’s given up all hope of being serious and is seeing himself from our perspective now.

    About time.

  73. sortableturnip says:

Some of the stuff was funny…like when he grabbed that GTA4 from that kid…"How old are you?  24.  Give me that!"  Funny stuff.  And when he grabbed that N64 controller from that guy and cursed at him, then started to play Zelda…Hilarious!

I still hate the man, though!

  74. Krono says:

No, his law career was his law career. His disbarrment is the opening of his comedy career.

  75. Loudspeaker says:

All this time I thought he was a 31 year comedy veteran!  Who knew!

I guess it’s nice to see that if Jack Thompson gets disbarred, there’s a career for him in the realm of online comedy.

"Jack Thompson: Video Game Avenger". I might actually watch that.

  80. face777 says:

double standards = probably money involved. Nice to see Jackie-boy whoes out his views from whichever way the winds blow.

There’s too much bad-air between himself and gamers.  He’s p*ssed off too many people.

  81. Matriculated says:

A few years ago he wouldn’t be seen dead on this show. Now that Fox News wont touch him, he’s had to accept anything that will get him airtime.

  82. Damanuhk says:

    Goodbye JT the Lawyer.

    Hello JT the comedian.

I actually think he wouldn’t do half bad. I hate his way of doing things , but he was pretty funny.

  83. Ben says:

But some people are acting like this one show makes everything Jack did in the past ok, but it dosent.

I have no problem with you or anyone else saying it is funny, but they need to realize that they are giving kudos to a man who has made a career out of lying and being a prick. Some people are even saying they now have respect for this man. Why?

  84. Ben says:

If Hitler made a funny joke, would you all give him Kudos?

Sorry. I know Jack is not quite as bad as Hitler, Im just sad that my fellow gamers would compliment Jack after everything he has done.
