No Surprise Dept: Jack Thompson Wades into Thai GTA Case

You knew it was only a matter of time.

In the wake of reports that a 19-year-old Thai man murdered a cab driver after playing Grand Theft Auto, embattled Miami attorney Jack Thompson has written a menacing e-mail to the top executives of Take-Two Interactive, publisher of the controversial series.

In the e-mail to T2 chairman Strauss Zelnick and CEO Ben Feder (and copied to dozens of other people, including GamePolitics), Thompson writes:

I warned you both that copycat killings by teens would occur upon the release of Grand Theft Auto IV. Now my prediction has come true…
GP: Except that it’s unclear whether the alleged killer was even playing GTA IV. In fact, as we reported, it’s not at all clear that GTA IV has even been imported into the Thai market as of yet.
In addition to multiple written warnings, I told you of this coming mayhem in a face-to-face meeting with you, Mr. Zelnick, on Central Park West on May 15, 2007… I am working with authorities now…  as well as other remedies against Take-Two for its reckless worldwide distribution of its murder simulation training products…
This is just the latest killing incident prompted by your murder simulators. I aim to make it the last…
GP: We covered the Central Park meeting which Thompson refers to here. It took place shortly after Zelnick had seized control of T2, ousting Thompson’s previous favorite target, CEO Paul Eibeler.
As to "working with authorities," Thompson often makes such claims.
PS: The above latest copycat killing will help fuel federal legislation in the United States because of your company’s chronic marketing and sale of its mature-rated video games to minors. You are selling GTA IV, for example, to anyone of any age via the Internet.

What I love is the assumption that his cause is so just and holy that the Florida bar will forgive his overtly criminal actions.  He misrepresented himself, threatened and slandered people, advocated child abuse?  It doesn’t matter, because he’s against video games, which are the true evil.

    What a lunatic.

Can someone clarify something for me:

I seem to remember that at one point Jack agreed to some settlement with Take 2 that involved him not making any publicly disparaging remarks about the company – yet we can obviously see that he’s not abiding by that.

Am I thinking of something else, or totally off the mark?

Since you check this website all the time, Jack, I have a recommendation.  Change your signature to "Jack Thompson, Bandwagon Attorney".  It seems moe fitting in light of this article.

Anyone who with two working brain cells could figure out rather quickly that his failure to respond to the SCOFLA show cause order appropriately (thus costing him his ability to petition that court), is not some sort of violation of his civil liberties.

The guy is just a total douche.  Not any more complicated then that.  I look forward to his disbarment. Once he can’t wield the courts as his own personal cudgel anymore, he’ll just be yet another douche with an opinion on the internet, and we’ve got plenty of those.

And wasn’t that meeting where they told Jack to STFU with your lies and absurd statments?

AGAIN with the "you are selling stuff to minors via the interwebs" BS.  You keep ignoring it, but you know that ALL ONLINE RETAILERS ARE LIKE THAT!  I pointed out how Sears and Walmart have such "I am not a minor" click through agreements, but all you have a hard on for is Best Buy(hmm, not much noise about them as of late, did they give you a good legal spanking?) and Take Two/Rockstar’s store.  I also pointed out how HYPOCRITICAL you are considering that these "kiddies" can buy R and Un-rated movies easily on & OFFLINE, and that even sites like Amazon sell REAL porn.

I think I know why he ignores facts like that… Entertainment like music, movies, books, COMIC BOOKS, etc have long been cleared of such issues, people don’t care about these forms anymore because they know better, and such entertainment probably reminds him of his failures in the past & that he has no chance against such.  That is why he has to make such a big deal out of the movie equivalent of an R-rated gangster flick series.

Because it is being repeated here and elsewhere that the Supremes’ will issue sanctions in Thompson’s case next month, let me clarify:

The September 4th deadline applied only to Judge Tunis’ Report being filed with the Supremes. Diligent public servant that she is, the good Judge filed her Report in advance of that deadline. The Supremes are now free to issue their final rulings in Thompson’s matter. They could possibly do so this week. Or next month. Or 3 months from now. It’s their call. And, for all we know, they’ll grant Norm Kent’s request to intervene in the matter which would likely push further off in time their ultimate ruling. They’ll certainly rule eventually, but there’s no telling at this point precisely when that’ll be.

Hope I haven’t dashed anyone’s hopes against the rocks. Just trying to be informative.

Right so Jack, no one is saying that people will never try to duplicate the actions they see in games/movies/books/religious material.  But what is being said is that in no way does the material remove the person’s free will in any manner.  Ergo, Take-Two didn’t make this man kill any one and the blood is on his own hands.

Call me crazy but I’m sure Thailand, like many countries in that part of the world has bigger issues other than GTA or any video game, especially in the extremely poor areas when it comes to things such as, oh I dunno, child prostitution/rape. But of course Jack doesn’t give a shit about something like that, it’s the damn vidya games! Also, judging how fast Thailand acted between the murder of the cabbie and the banning of the game.. I’d say that the wheels of justice in that country are turning in a direction to perhaps… further supress "Subversive" material? A proper investigation should have occured before taking such a drastic measure.. no there had to be a pre-existing agenda to remove the first of many violent videogames.
