Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

August 5, 2008 -

AFP reports that Thai government officials have now banned the Grand Theft Auto series following the recent arrest of 19-year-old GTA player Polwat Chinno on murder charges.

"The police are empowered to immediately arrest shopkeepers if they find any GTA (Grand Theft Auto) games on sale," Ruangsak Jaritake, a police spokesman, told AFP.

"GTA is banned mainly because of its obscene content -- under the criminal law article 287 that prohibits reproduction, distribution or possession of such material," he said...

Any game seller found stocking the game could be sentenced to three years in prison and a fine up to 6,000 baht (180 dollars). Stricter penalties are in place for online sellers who could receive five years imprisonment and a 100,000 baht (3,000 dollars) fine.

It would appear that Chinno was playing an unspecified earlier version of Gran Theft Auto - not GTA IV, given the local Thai distributor's announcement that it will not import the recently-released game:

The New Era Interactive Media company, the only legal distributor of the games, said earlier Tuesday it would remove the game from sale in Thailand.

"We have stopped selling Grand Theft Auto and inform all legal vendors to withdraw the game from their shelves," the company said in an online statement.

"The company will not import GTA 4 (the next in the series) to distribute in Thailand," it added.

I've been to Thailand; you can buy anygame on the street.  Banned or not.

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

Thanks good job;

Btw, I think Atari and Midway will drop out too, but mostly travesti because  these guys have done nothing travesti or little and need to start saving costs. and dizi izle

YES.

Now I don't have to get off my ass for the important shit anymore!

Wait... I think that sounds like a good idea.

But I think voting should MAKE you get off your ass, and see outside or a second while you go vote. I mean, your picking the president of the United States of America for God's Sake... least you can do is drive down there and punch out a card.

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

Nintendo is indeed selling SOME of these on the Virtual Console but not even close to all of them. While i agree in part to his piracy he was filling a market that Nintendo failed to recognize. Maybe someone doesnt want to buy a Wii. maybe they just want a console with 50 - 100 NES games on them?? maybe just maybe?

but no Nintendo wants everyone araba kiralama to buy the Wii. thats their excuse but thats not what copyright is supposed to protect. i am real sure that the makers of 10 yard fight were losing sleep because they were missing out on their $0.00025 worth because they didnt get royalties from this player. *smirk*

my question is, should Super Mario Bros. be banned from public domain forever? isnt 23 years enough time for Nintendo to have made their profits?

If you have followed the Steamboat Willie case regarding Mickey Mouse you can rest in your bed well at night knowing that the MOUSE will still be under copyright law, away from public domain after your great grandchildren are in nursing homes. That is beyond ridiculous dont you think??

Gallagher can araç kiralama say all he wants, but I strongly rent a car believe it's due to his crappy leadership and E3 being a joke. ESA's Board of Directors need to find a way to get out rent a car of this horrid contract with this Bush cronie before there's no one left on the Board.

At least they still have their child hookers.

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

Anyone here surprised by the complete lack of detail regarding this whole issue? That and the quickness in which the Thai government moved to enact a ban. Almost like everything was planned beforehand?

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

You'd be astounded how fast things get done in a military government.  But in the end, whether he has real power or not, the king will have the last word.

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

This ban will do no good, and the government knows it.  Videogame piracy runs rampant in thailand.

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

I love those fictional bans. I hope the gamers of Thailand get all their games through importers now that online fine would never be able to effect any online company outside of Thailand.

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

Sooo, when will our troll storm in saying the US version is soon to follow? (protip, it isn't going to)

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

Um... look up, dude.

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

A time for people to stand up and rally against government censoring is not ever going to happen in Thiland sadly this is the case the world over, only in America do they really have any real freedom of speech to protect.

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

The Govt and their agencies been wanting to pass this kind of law for a while now and then THIS happened so the only sensible thing to do is to ban the games

The problems have been around for ages now so at first they restricted the time of the day you can play an online games that a server in Thailand for example: under 18 can only play MMO from 6am to about 10pm I think and enforced it by make enter your national ID card numbers during the sign-up process , but the kids get away with it neither registered their parents ID number OR bought the username and password from people who are willing to sell for some money. Secondly they told the internet cafe that students with uniform on are not allowed into the shop during the school hours and the kids just packed thier mufti clothes with in the school bag because most of the internet cafe they will go are just the one right outside their school

Also the earlier article refer GTA as and "online game" I mean the only version of online GTA is the one on the console anyway same as their Top 10 most dangerous games I me an C'mon do some research you lazy corrupted Govt

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

Idiots.

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

Wow. Worst knee-jerk reaction ever.

It's times like these I'm happy there's a legal system in place to prevent this type of stuff from happening.

Not like it's going to do much anyway.

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

That Thailand has banned "GTA" (with no specification on which version of the game) demanding a legal fine and jailtime if a retailer is caught with any version of the GTA series on their shelves, immediately following a very sketchy set of violent acts, all within 48 hours. Leads me to belive that this is just far far too convienient for it NOT to be a setup. This is a country with lots of other very real and very dangerous problems, none of which has really been dealt with successfully by the current governmental body. They NEED to make themselves look good, that they are protecting the citizens, and videogames (esp GTA) are a very large and easy target. I wouldn't be suprised to see the current Thai government roll out a larger series of similar bans on videogames, perhaps even on other mediums.

All of this brings to focus a greater question of:

Just how far is any governmental body willing to go in order to keep its people "protected" from videogames?

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

You have a very good point.  We already know the US government sold it's people out to the corperate world, as well as China, but that is another story. (FYI China is allowed to drill off shore but US oil companies are not, then we buy that oil from China...  Logical? no...)

The government doesn't care about the people one bit.  They word what they do in ways to make their actions sound good, but when you really look at the facts, the government is really screwing us over in the US.  The same thing is happening in other countries as well.  There is a balance of where the government is suppose to be and where it is now.  A point where they should be allowed to pass laws and make regulations and when the people of that country should be the ones deciding what should happen, and it is the failure of the people for not speaking out more about that.

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

According to the third post up or so, they have been speaking out.

Sounds like it's time for some big changes in Thailand. The question is, how far will the government go to maintain itself in spite of the people telling it to go away?

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

That's clearly the sensible thing to do; Punish everyone for the actions of one person.

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

And now I'm even happier that the common Thai people are protesting the government. If you don't know what I'm talking about look up "pantamit". It's a gathering of many citizens that are unhappy with the current government. They have been protesting for more than 70 days straight. A lot of Thais don't agree with the way the current government is doing things.

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

Yeah they can ban it BUT!!! here cops DO TAKE bribe  and pirated version do exist at a much lower price and I can just buy GTA 4 from a comfort of my home anyway

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

Well, in the coutry I live in, there's this thing called 'procedure of law' and 'trials' which require things like 'evidence' before any action is taken.

Obviously, I don't live in Thailand.

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

While they're at it, they may as well ban/boycott ALL of Tony Jaa's movies.

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

Or TV for that matter. There's probably more bullets being shown shot on TV soap operas than in the Vietnam War...

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

Given just how rampant piracy is in this part of asia, I doubt this law will ever carry any real clout.

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

Meanwhile in related news the 19 year old convicted of stabbing the cabbie has been torn apart by an angry mob of Thai gamers who were saying 'you wrecked it for all of us'.

---------------------------------------------------- Debates are like merry go rounds. Two people take their positions then they go through the same points over and over and over again. Then when it's over they have the same positions they started in.

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

I agree, this is WAY too closely timed not to have been set up. Within a few hours of the news report of this crime hitting the world wide news circuits Thailand orders a ban of the whole series, then puts out an announcement that is filled with half truths and falsehoods.

Oh Big Brother, where art thou?

On the Plus side, perhaps JT will move to Thailand because they are willing to ban GTA. Of course he'll have to get used to the prostitution, the sex trafficking, and the huge black market pornography industry, but hey, new challenges for him!!!

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

I don't believe conspiracies, but this sounds suspicious.

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

It sounds like one big conspiracy just to ban GTA. It was like they were waiting for it.

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

So basically from the sound of it, they've banned the entire series?

-Gray17

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

How exactly would Thailand be able to drag over online retailers from other countries over to their jails?

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

"Stricter penalties are in place for online sellers who could receive five years imprisonment and a 100,000 baht (3,000 dollars) fine."

So, if someone in Thailand buys GTA from someone outside of the country, how are they going to enforce this?  I doubt any other government would be willing to extradite someone over the sale of a video game.

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

Amazing eh? Singapore was looking to ban games, then, as if by magic, an excuse to do so appears, and the provision to enact a ban are put in place overnight.

If I were more cynical, I'd smell a rat...

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

This provision will be unsuccesful.

I've been to Thailand; you can buy anygame on the street.  Banned or not.

If you're an idiot, you'll think that they're out to ban videogames.  Truth be told, no videogame legislation will work in thailaind, as piracy runs fucking rampant.  And the government knows this.

Re: Thailand Bans GTA in Wake of Cabbie Killing

Well, seeing as they claim they're banning it "mainly because of its obscene content" yet somehow they needed in incident like this to feel comfortable banning it...

Yeah I smell a rat. The whole think reeks of a government just waiting for a chance to scapegoat something so they can justify their censorship of something they don't like.
