Report: Serial Sex Offender Inspired by Grand Theft Auto

British tabloid The Sun has laid the blame for a string of sexual assaults at the feet of Grand Theft Auto.

Under the headline Sex Beast copied Grand Theft Auto, the newspaper spins the tale of 19-year-old Ryan Chinnery (displaying his bling at left). In true tablod style, The Sun’s prose is lurid:

A TEEN sex beast attacked four women in an imitation of violent computer game Grand Theft Auto, a court heard yesterday.  Ryan Chinnery, 19, prowled streets in his car targeting females he thought were prostitutes after becoming obsessed with the video nasty…

And the court was told he may have been influenced by the virtual reality game, in which a character drives around on “missions” — including approaching prostitutes who can be beaten up. A copy of Grand Theft Auto was found at his home by police…

Prosecutor Eleanor Laws said Chinnery’s love of Grand Theft Auto “may go some way to explaining his attitude towards women”. She said: “Prostitutes in it can be subjected to violence. “There may be some connection with the defendant admitting spending a lot of time playing that game.”

Thankyou for bringing this up… I know about this incident 1st hand and I know the accused… He has not once said that the game is the influence to what has happened and in my opinion the media has exaggerated so much of what actually happened and it now reads ten times worse!! People should stop believing the media, everything is a rumour or a lie of some kind and it’s the newspapers who are the bad guys!! It’s so frustrating!! I am not saying for he has supposedly done, just think about whether or not what you are reading is the true picture!! Thank you for taking the time to read this reply.

Come on, Sun readers know more than that. If you do it to a protitutes you get free health. Do it to a copper and you get points.

  8. L42yB says:

Sadly, you’re very wrong there.  Too many British people believe what they read in the tabloids.  For the average Britain, it is common knowledge that in GTA you can drag random women and protitutes to some quite location and rape them with giant dildos to get extra points in the game…

Sad but true 🙁  The truth is irrelevant, mass hysteria and sensational lies are far more entertaining.

besides that, isn’t 19 old enough to be considered beyond the "GTA made me do it" defense? i thought you had to be younger to be susceptable to bad media? or should we raise the bar some more and limit M+ rated games (US ESRB, i dunno the british stuff) to 21 like the drinking age?

I don’t think so much that it’s that adult products be sold to adults. It’s that adult product be sold to people who would respect them, play them responsibly, and not use them as a scapegoat for the misbehavings. Having a terrible childhood where their parents don’t give a sh*t about them and stick them in front of masterpieces like GTA and wish them the best of luck while they go to the gym and have an anti-family life doesn’t necessarily aid the situation.

What really pisses me off is that video games are always the culprit. Nevermind that we’re showing blood and guts during primetime and in a comedic fashion, tits all over FX, and just overall idiotic, brainless, zombie inducing BULLSH*T on public television. NO NO NO! It’s those damned video games! You know, the things you have to pay like 500 bucks just to get into your house and play, yeah that’s it… They’re so full of violence and sex and bad stuff! Gosh, I better hide this porn under my bed, or all these gore movies in DVD rack.

Who gives a sh*t if it’s interactive. I hit ‘Play’ to watch Cary Elwes cut his own leg off, or I hit ‘X’ to watch some virtual dood cut off a virtual mafia member’s limb. What don’t need people prosecuting people for doing bad things on behalf of video games, what we need is people prosecuting these dumbass retailers for selling video games to inelligible idiots who are suceptable to the content and INTEND to get ideas.

I remember when I was a kid, I couldn’t even ask salesman at Sears to pick out a game from the case, these days those people practically hand kids stuff with tits all over the cover without asking. Idiots.

Ya know, what would be an interesting bit of investigation by authorities would be to check the computers of these criminals who blame, directly or indirectly, video games and other media for their crimes.

But not search the computers for the media they are blaming bur rather search the computers for their exposure to individuals such as John Bruce and Keith Vaz, among others, who blame video games for criminal acts.

That way, we can prove conspiracy by those individuals, such as John Bruce and Keith Vaz, to incite individuals to commit criminal acts and blame the media for their acts.  After all, they aren’t learning to BLAME those media products for their acts from the media products.  They’re learning it from the folks like John Bruce, Keith Vaz, and others.

So, in fact, it may very well be the likes of John Bruce, Keith Vaz, and others who are actually responsible for exposing people to the idea that they can commit various criminal activities and not worry about being held responsible for their actions.

Remember that website John Bruce wants to create?  Further evidence of a conspiracy to incite individuals to commit criminal acts.

Tried to do a search for info on the Prosecutor to see if she commonly tries to create sensationalism, like the one that John Bruce claimed contacted him in the Cody Posey case, but all I could find was a US author by the same name.  Oddly enough, she writes about law, including sexual offenders.  Not sure if she’s the same person.  I really don’t think so but it’s a pretty funny conincidence.

At any rate, the kid has to go through a psychological exam.  Everyone knows that John Bruce is hoping it will be a biased exam like the psychological evaluation he received or those biased, incompetent research studies that he always touts.

anyway, i never said "bled dry by our society", i said by the system…so there is no direct connection between some random jobs, who are part of the system, but not the system itself

how can you have a honest day of work, if the last thing you find there is honesty?

"There are plenty of people forced into that profession, and I feel sorry for them, but there are numerous more who choose it willingly due to a lack of drive, innitiative, or more lucrative choices, and I feel next to no sympathy for them since they had another way."
i don’t talk about sympathy for them, i talk about equality
(but as an answer to this: your view on this topic leaves much space for interpretation. you always have another way, but sometimes you can only choose between bad and worse. and the percentage, at least where i come from, of women who are forced to prostitution because of various situations outnumber those who choose this profession willingly due to <see list above> big time, and you can trust me on this)

well, than you should be more sensitive with your choice of words

"…Wouldn’t people be more concerned if…" states, as far as i understand it, that in your eyes prositutes are not as much "worth" as "normal people", and have to take a lower part in society. i know that this is actualy a true situation in daily life, but is there any reason for it, except the influence coming from various religions?

maybe there is a little language barrier and i just get it wrong (english is anything else than my mothers tongue, as you have surely recogniced yet)

    if so: take my excuse

    because of this:

"But there are more than just hookers walking on the virtual streets. Wouldn’t people be more concerned if…?"

and now we play: find the chauvinism

  78. JustChris says:

My definition of "honest day of work" is not breaking the law while working. Such as, not selling your body for sex, drug dealing, embezzlement, etc.

And did you just tell me to keep my narrow-minded views for myself while addressing me as a fascist bacillus? What’s not good for me shouldn’t be good for you either.

  79. JustChris says:

What I am saying is, why do these people mostly talk about the prostitutes and cops being shot? Do the other virtual people not matter?

  80. Father Time says:

Have you all ready forgotten the people bitching and moaning about it encouraging players to kill cops (as if getting shot at was some form of encouragement). But don’t fret in Spain there’s all ready been people complaining that you kill cab drivers, so perhpas eventually we’ll get someone shouting ‘think of the random shmucks’.

Right now though my money is on some hotdog/nut/hamburger/soda vendor complaining about GTA IV next.

  81. Zevorick says:

The fact you felt it necessary to post this anonymously shows how seriously I should take you, but I’ll bite anyway…

"’a honest day of work’ in a system thats only draining the blood from the working class"?

I find your view more narrow minded than the guy you commented on. You are so clued into flaming someone that you don’t even consider such worthwhile professions as Psychologists, Doctors, Educators of any kind, Police Officers, Social Service Workers, and a myriad of other careers who make their living servicing those that you claim are only bled dry by our society.

It seems to me that an honest days work, in the previous posters definition, includes not breaking the law, which does exclude prostitution in the United States everywhere except Reno, Nevada (No, its not legal in Las Vegas). There are plenty of people forced into that profession, and I feel sorry for them, but there are numerous more who choose it willingly due to a lack of drive, innitiative, or more lucrative choices, and I feel next to no sympathy for them since they had another way. So you can color people like the previous poster fascist all you want, and I’ll color you ignorant.

Where was I? Oh yes, the ACTUAL story. It’s a crock, but do you expect anything more from the Sun? It’s a tabloid at best, and should be considered an "entertaining" read more than a legitimate news source. Take it for what its worth guys, and take a deep breathe.

  82. Anonymous says:

    oh come on…

honest day of work? what is your bloody definition for "a honest day of work"? and does there even exist "a honest day of work" in a system thats only draining the blood from the working class?

looks like in your eyes prositutes are lower life, it’s ok if you think so…but keep your narrow minded view of the world for you before someone else catches up your nasty little fascist bacillus

  83. Father Time says:

Why did you take it as him eyeing prostitutes as a lower form of life? Like the rest of us he’s tired of people complaining about GTA’s supposed ‘horrendous’ treatment of prostitutes.

  84. Muetank ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

Who ever can’t tell the first one has been shoped must be brain damaged. I can tell because of the pixles and from seeing some shops in my time. But seriously, the background isn’t even from the same dam game people. If your going to lie about it atleast put SOME effort into it.

  85. Anonymous ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

If that is the kids real picture…  wow…  stupid people who dress and act thug should all be put in jail as a preventative measure, no matter what the race.  Act like an intelligent human being, or at least a productive part of society, and get a freakin job kids.  Working at Burger King where P Diddy told you to eat is all good, but if you go and get a girl pregnant, you will need to be making more money than that.

Then we have the P Diddy blogs…  Okay, I am not going there, his idiocy is enough to disgrace himself…

  86. Austin_Lewis says:

What’s most disturbing is that the prosecutor would make statements like this in the first case.  She’s supposed to be hardest on him, not say ‘well, GTA may have caused this’.

  87. Shoehorn O'Plenty says:

"Prosecutor Eleanor Laws said Chinnery’s love of Grand Theft Auto “may go some way to explaining his attitude towards women”.

Why do they consider the more reasonable implication, that his attitude toward women may go some way to explaining his love for the game? I know there is no sexual assault in the game, but for someone who already hates and sees women as targets, a game where you can walk up to them on the street and hit them might seem compelling.

Still, it’s the Sun. If he had blamed Bigfoot, they would have printed it…

  88. beemoh says:

I like how "Missions" is in quotes, like the sheer concept of a mission was invented by GTA.

    You know, like violence was.

  89. Anonymous says:

No.. because (a) the Sun is a stupid comic and everyone in the UK knows this, and (b) the BBFC actually play the games they rate and know damned well there’s no sexual assault in there – let alone calling it a ‘video nasty’.

  90. Cheater87 says:

Oh dear they said it was a video nasty. Anyone think the BBFC is going to go all 80’s movie censorship on the game industry???

  91. JustChris says:

What gets me is that it’s always the prostitutes that get victimized when such people talk about these games. Somehow it’s only the prostitutes that matter. But there are more than just hookers walking on the virtual streets. Wouldn’t people be more concerned that you can beat up the other passers-by that might be coming home from an honest day of work? Or just a walk to the beach.

  92. kurisu7885 (can't log in) says:

Nope. I nfact i nthe old top down ones you coudln’t tell the gender of anyone i nthe game.

  93. Kincyr says:

in GTA, just about everybody can be beaten up, not just prostitutes. Since they didn’t specify which GTA game, I will have to assume the top-down view, first game of the series. Were there even prostitutes in that game? Much less any missions involving beating such criminals up (is prostitution illegal in Britian like it is here in the U.S.?) in any game of the series? At least these bozos didn’t mention a "points" system of any kind. It sounds like Eleanor Laws is defending prostitutes, as opposed to all women. Way to represent your gender.

these retard-run tabloids would spew the exact same witless lies about movies, music, novels, paintings, dance routines and plants, and they have done so before. they’re not even worth the paper they’re printed on.

  95. Soulsmith says:

    Seriously this is absolute bullshit.

The guy is scum, just because he has a game console and has some violent games for it does not mean this was the reason he decided to go and assault some random women… They don’t say he is using it as an excuse but the defence is going to leap on that bandwagon if it means the bastard gets a lighter sentence (which would probably be about 18 months community service at most as this is the UK of course) I mean where does the sun get these nuggets of info from? When will this end?

  96. face777 says:

He’s a ned / chav / trailer trash.  Lower class, non-educated, poisonous thug.  Most people of that sort but the GTA series. Hells, at Gamestation I once had a 6 year old little ned ask me how much a copy of GTA: San Andreas was, then had the gall to look surprised when I told him he couldn’t buy it.

    Little bastards

  97. Redmess ( User Karma: 0 ) says:

It does sound as if he was indeed imitating the game. But the game itself is based on reality. So he just imitates reality then. The article does a good job of undermining a reasonable argument with misinformation, too.

And even if he imitated the game, well, he was the one who did the crimes, not the game, so he should be prosecuted just the same.

  98. Anonymous says:

its bad enough that he’s a bloody wankster and he’s blaming videogames. but sexually assaulting four women? what the fuck is wrong with this kid? he’s hurting the image of men/gamers around the world, and should have his fingers and dick cut
off so that he cannot be associated with either group. that would also solve the problem of him reproducing, though the odds were slim looking like that.

  99. NovaBlack says:

HAHAHAHHAHAHAH .. the sun? the SUN?

  100. Matthew says:

    Bold for great justice.

For greater justice, prostitutes in GTA are solely sex objects. They serve no other functional purpose and once you’re 100 yards away they cease to exist. Because it’s a game and they aren’t real people.

They barely do research (if any) when it concerns video games, all it matters to them is there’s violence in it and they’ll use it to defend whatever actions the guy did.

There’s just little justice to give the games.

  105. Andrew Eisen says:

How could he possibly have been imitating the game when there is no sexual assault in Grand Theft Auto?

    Andrew Eisen

  106. JustChris says:

To be more exact, a Chav. I believe it’s the UK’s version of trailer park trash. He probably carries a cheap pocket knife and runs away at the sight of a muscle-bound 6-foot man.
