Be Old, Play Games, Get Cheaper Car Insurance

October 2, 2008

Things are looking up for gray gamers.

First there was the Wii, then there was Brain Age, and now this. A pilot program being tested by Allstate may result in over 50's getting cheaper auto insurance for playing video games.

As reported by the Associated Press, Allstate's InSight program will be tested among 50-75 year-olds in Pennsylvania:

The group's accident rates will be compared to a control group of people who do not play the games. The games are not all specific to driving. They're designed to reverse age-related cognitive decline and improve visual alertness.

For example, a game called "Jewel Diver" has players keep track of underwater jewels that pop up on the screen for a moment before they are hidden under fish swimming around.

Hearing stuff like this about gaming makes me wish I still lived in PA...

Re: Be Old, Play Games, Get Cheaper Car Insurance

I work for allstate and I can insure you PA has horrible service from the local providers not allstate itself but yeah PA as a state sucks.

Trying to find any service for a PA member is hard as hell because it seems PA is backwards and literally everything in PA shuts down after 6 it seems.

Don't live in PA, please

Re: Be Old, Play Games, Get Cheaper Car Insurance

small factual error in the story Dennis, Brain Age was release on may 19th of 2005, the Wii was released in late 2006, there for brain age was first, not the wii

Re: Be Old, Play Games, Get Cheaper Car Insurance

How will the car insurance know if they play video games?

They can always ask.

Re: Be Old, Play Games, Get Cheaper Car Insurance

they will most likely make them play video games for a certain period of time in a laboratory setting. That way they know what was played and in what amount. How they are going to forbid those from playing video games in the "control group" i'd seriously like to know.

Re: Be Old, Play Games, Get Cheaper Car Insurance

My guess is it will be flash games that you need to log on to a website to play. If you been playing the games for a certain amount of time you get a discount. As to how the study will be done? I have no idea.

Re: Be Old, Play Games, Get Cheaper Car Insurance

If this study gets a statistically significant result due to a large participant pool, i'm going to ressurect Karl Pearson, and we're going to be hurting some peeps...

Hmm... I wonder what Jack will say about this. It sucks that no non-members are allowed to post anymore.

Re: Be Old, Play Games, Get Cheaper Car Insurance

That's fine and everything, but you don't have to bring him up in every news story. Predicting his moves just seems childish, we should leave the Jack comments to Jack news.

Re: Be Old, Play Games, Get Cheaper Car Insurance

He would probably call Dennis a moron for thinking this is news and that this verifies his constant ramblings that video games can train people for good or bad.

Agreed...  I think JT just needs to smoke a joint...  maybe he would calm down more, but with how paranoid he is, maybe he smoked too much weed...

E. Zachary KnightIf the videos are of sufficient quality that people subscribe and watch regularly, then those let's players are providing a service that people want. That is the heart of capitalism. That is not something that should be shamed.05/17/2013 - 8:06am
E. Zachary KnightI have no idea who either of those people are. However, I still don't see why making a business out of creating let's play videos is somehow evil or wrong.05/17/2013 - 8:04am
MaskedPixelanteIt sure is if you're just doing it for the money. See Tobuscus and/or Pewdiepie for what happens when people get into it just for the money.05/17/2013 - 7:30am

Avalongod@Zach and quicnkold...I've read the bill and the intent of it is to fear-monger. It's not a balanced message. I don't recall the ESRB being mentioned at all. It's more "keeps your kids away from these movies/games or they'll become violent"05/15/2013 - 4:35pm
E. Zachary Knightquiknkold, The big problem with that legislation is the amount of misinformation out there. Who is going to ensure that the information in the pamphlet is accurate?05/15/2013 - 3:25pm
quiknkoldREBeardogg : I'm on the fence about this. on one side, I want parents to be aware of the ESRB, and even Movie Ratings. On the other hand, I feel this will be used for nothing but Propaganda. The ESRB does a good job.05/15/2013 - 3:07pm
