Anticlimax: Manhunt 2 Released in U.K.

October 6, 2008 -

It was the gaming world's cause celebre of 2007.

Manhunt 2 was reviled by anti-violence activists, banned by the U.K.'s content rating organization, and criticized in Parliament and at No. 10 Downing Street.

After a protracted legal fight, England's High Court overturned the ban early in 2008. But, as Eurogamer reports, Manhunt 2 is just now being readied for sale in the U.K.

The street date is October 31st.

That's appropriate on two counts. Of course, it's Halloween. But it's also the one-year anniversary of the originally-scheduled Manhunt 2 launch.

Re: Anticlimax: Manhunt 2 Released in U.K.

Okay, I'm going to just stand up here and speak for the interlectual side of the Manhunt fanbase, as unfortunatly the majority of us are more than happy to sit back and let non-fans or the incredibly vocal idiots of our little community do the talking. And seeing as most of the posts here are asking varients of 'who's buying it?' and 'who cares?' I think that one of us should speak up and answer.

So, the upcoming UK launch. I live in the UK and yes, I will be showing up early to pick up copies of the game for both the wii and ps2. I have been waiting since the games innitial announcment for the game to finally hit the shelves, and don't really feel like waiting a moment longer than I have to.

Am I buying it for controveries sake? No. I already have it on PSP, and if it had turned out to be naff, I certainly wouldn't be waiting to buy the other two. I am buying them because I love the game and want to have the two console versions for the various extra features included on both (Dolby 5.1 and usb headset support on PS2, motion controls and extra weapons on wii) as well as thanking Rockstar for fighting for my right to play this fantastic game.

This isn't the only time I've bought two versions of a game for the extras, nor is it an unusual practise. Many owners of the original Manhunt forked out again for the PC version, just to play the fan created mods, just like GTA players. I personally bought the gamecube version of killer7 after finding out it had superior graphics to my ps2 version. I also remember buying pokemon red and blue after buying yellow, so I could catch all 150 of them.

That's right, I referenced pokemon in a rant about Manhunt. Because, not all the games I own are gore-fests. Some people look at me strange when I keep my game boxes for manhunt, killer7, dead rising, and mortal kombat next to the boxes of Katamari games, Ribbit King, Spyro the Dragon and Klonoa 2.

Think about it, it's not about the gore, but about buying a good game. If it was about the gore, why would I be buying the edited versions? I'd be off w**king to the uncensored beta release. Instead, I am buying the polished commercial release, because I want to buy a good game and enjoy myself. It's all about personal choice. By all means, don't buy the game if you don't like that sort of thing. But don't suggest that, if you're not into it, it's bad, or that those who do enjoy it are somehow less than you. Because you're not.

Re: Anticlimax: Manhunt 2 Released in U.K.

Due to Rockstar's utter lack of testicles in being bullied by the BBFC and the ESRB the game is literally painful to play.  I personally would have rated the version which was released T.  The game consists of holding down one of the buttons as you sneak up behind someone.  And when you release to something the screen goes to... imagine what your carpet would look like if you chased three pounds of Skittles with a bottle of vodka then threw up.  It literaly induced a headache for me.

Re: Anticlimax: Manhunt 2 Released in U.K.

I remember being at one of the talks that ran alongside the London Games Festival last year.  There was a 10 minute discussion between the panel over whether or not Manhunt II should be banned.  At the end of it Matt Jeffrey from EA asked for a show of hands "How many people here would actually buy it?" and there wasnt a single hand.

It was a talking point for the sake of it... the original manhunt was panned by critics and mostly sold off the back of the controversy of it being wrongly linked with a murder.  Would the sequel even exist without those extra sales?

I doubt many will be overly fussed about Manhunt II... sure people will discuss freedom of speech and how far censors will go, but how many of us will buy the game and think it is truely worth it?

Re: Anticlimax: Manhunt 2 Released in U.K.

Some here would argue that choosing pragmatism over idealism leads to a slippery slope down which we lose our basic civil rights and encourage state-sanctioned censorship. I don't agree personally, but the argument is there.

Time to prepare for the inevitable media backlash from the Daily Fail, which will only encourage British censors to be less liberal with their classifications in future.

Wooptie doo. Now UK gets to play a shitty stealth-action game. Oh wait! But this time you're a insurcure Gordon Freeman clone with the voice of Woody Allen, and you can take a circular saw up a gimp's ass!

Isn't Freedom of Speech grand?

What i'm trying to say is, "Good for you, British gamers and British Manhunt fans, you get to play the sequel." And now, to quote GlaDOS, I ask: "Was it worth it?"

Re: Anticlimax: Manhunt 2 Released in U.K.

Dude all British gamers had to do was sit around and do nothing and Rockstar took care of it for them. I suppose they could've imported a copy if they could get around region locks (if it has them).

Funny, I'd assumed it had already been and gone after all the excitement.

Re: Anticlimax: Manhunt 2 Released in U.K.

Right. So, who's actually buying it?

Re: Anticlimax: Manhunt 2 Released in U.K.

More interesting question: Who is actually buying it because they want to play the game, and who just to celebrate being able to buy it.

Not that the latter is entirely a bad thing. Vote with your wallets and all.

Re: Anticlimax: Manhunt 2 Released in U.K.

Well, I will be buying it for both the PS2 and the Wii. I already imported it for the PSP and I'm eager to play the other two. I plan to head down at 9:00 on the 31st and be the first person to pick up the game.

Re: Anticlimax: Manhunt 2 Released in U.K.

I wonder if it'll sell much...

Re: Anticlimax: Manhunt 2 Released in U.K.

it wont sell as well as it could. Given the legal fees rockstar will probably loose money on it in the U.K.

But the real victory here is that rockstars next release wont be messed with so much.

Re: Anticlimax: Manhunt 2 Released in U.K.

Hurray. Just letting all  you UK gamers know the PS2 versiono is less censored then the Wii one. :D
