Microsoft Adds $25K to Missing Gamer Reward Fund

Despite yesterday’s massive search effort, Brandon Crisp remains missing. The 15-year-old gamer disappeared after a family dispute on October 13th.

The Vancouver Sun reports that Microsoft Canada has chipped in $25,000, raising the reward fund total to $50,000. Brandon’s parents told police that the young man left home after an argument over what they described as his obsessive play of Call of Duty 4 on Xbox Live.

A Barrie P.D. spokesman said that Microsoft was cooperating fully with the investigation:

Microsoft said they would do anything they can to expedite the process to find Brandon," said Sgt. Dave Goodbrand, spokesman for the Barrie police.

Brandon’s parents say he was obsessed with playing an online game called Call of Duty 4 on his Xbox and police have been working with Microsoft to track down the Internet addresses of everyone who interacted with the 15-year-old before he disappeared. There are concerns he may have gone to meet someone he met online.

Barrie P.D. says that it has received more than a thousand tips that need follow-up. Psychics and even the newly-disbarred Jack Thompson have offered advice. From the Sun:

Miami lawyer Jack Thompson called Barrie police offering his help. Thompson, whose cases have included a youth who committed murder by re-enacting scenes from video games, said a young person addicted to video games can be traumatized if forced to go cold turkey.

"It’s a psychological and physiological condition," said Thompson. "These are tough things to have the kid go cold turkey."

Barrie P.D. has established a tip line for information concerning Brandon’s whereabouts: 705-725-7025 ext. 2160

UPDATE: Steve Crisp, Brandon’s father, is urging Microsoft to expedite the process of extracting contact information from the hard drive of the missing boy’s Xbox 360, reports CTV. Mr. Crisp made this plea:

The key to finding my son lies in this XBox hard drive. Please, if you can speed up the process of handing this information over to our police, it could mean a big difference in our son’s safe return. There are a lot of red tape and legal issues I know that Microsoft probably has, and the police probably have.

CTV has posted video interviews with Steve Crisp as well as with Sgt. Dave Goodbrand of the Barrie P.D.

    This is what we know:

No one can tell he was actually addicted do the the lack of information.  It is just something the parents and press and spouting out.

His father packed the back for him.

There is not consistance information on what game he was really playing as well.

He was on his bike and left it behind.

A lady thought she saw him walking around that same area.

Other than that, there really isnt much good information.  The father packing the bag for him is enough for me to claim him as a bad parent in my point of view of parenting.  The mother ranting off is helping nothing.  In many cases like this, the parents don’t talk this much from the cases I have seen, which is why I think there is more too it than what they are saying and they know it.  The child was rightly punished, but the father packing the back it beyond my scope of understanding.

And no, my parents involved themselves with my life and know about my gaming habits.  They have ever since I was little.  Even though they don’t care for the type of entertainment I enjoy, they still involved themselves by playing with, trying to learn to play, or watched me play decently often.  They also talked with me about the games, may it be the storyline or other content.  They knew who all of my friends were, and who my friends were on online games as well.  For the few people that I didn’t personally know, they knew that I played with them rarely.

Though I may go through a short stage of being pissed off, I don’t go through a fit and run off because my mommy and daddy took away my toys.  Who knows, maybe it was because I was parented well.  That and my parents aren’t stupid by any standard, and nor am I even, though I tend to vent on threads like these.  It just seems they are looking for an orange in corn field instead of looking in the store where you would normally go looking for an orange.  Maybe they haven’t released key information that makes everything going on and being said make sense, but given how this is all running, I am doubting it.

I agree that there is a lack of information, which is why I’m puzzled as to why you would throw around stupid assumptions about their parenting.

The only thing we know is that the kid ran off because he was rightly punished, and now they’re doing MORE THAN THEY SHOULD to find him.

Although I highly doubt it: I hope that your parents would go to every illogical and ridiculous end should you run away in a fit.

    DeepThorn says:

If my child went missing, I would have a better clue on what happened, because I would involve myself in my child’s life.  I also would NOT be packing the bag for my child to leave.

I am the type of person that wonders why the hell parents buy their under age kids mature rated video games, especially when they have no clue what the hell goes on in the video games because of NOT involving themselves in their child’s life.

Xbox Live is NOT a lead, it is an excuse.  A lead would result in some sort of evidence that could be used to help in the search of the kid.  An excuse is what people use to blame what happened on something that can not defend itself, while they go on being horrible parents.

If the kid’s friends saw him get on Live, they would have called the police.  If there was ANY clues there, my guess is that the friends of the kid would be the key people that would know, especially since he has some pretty lame parents.  Hell, we don’t even know if this kid had any friends at his school, or even if they might have moved in the last couple years, which would make this search a little more complex.

With the lack of information we have gotten, the kid might have been taught how to drive from his dad, and him of stole a car, and went off.  He might have ran into a shady local that is keeping him hostage.  Hell, maybe he did meet up with someone from Live, but at what point in time would he have contacted someone to do that?  We have no idea, the police have told nothing of value where anyone could actually help.  For all we know, the kid is living in a tree near where he left his bike, and only coming down to get some food.

This is why I HIGHLY support the camera systems some cities have that can track someone from their house, to the subway, to a place for food, to work, to home, to their friend’s place, and so on.  This is very simple technology that could help in MANY cases, this being one of the most important.  While we think of ways to help, things that may be possible in what happened, how about we think of things that could have helped out in this whole situation.  I know the US had the idea of chipping your kid like people do their pets where a GPS system could find them.  Many familys have had it done already, and the chip holds all of their medical information as well.

There is good and bad of the community getting involved, good and bad of focusing on Live, good and bad of the parents being able to publicly speak about anything going on when they are histarical.  You can NOT focus on one thing, such as the video games, as much as they are though.  They have no clue if that is solid enough of a ‘lead’ that could give them results or not, while treating it like a normal run away.  If it was solid enough, it would have been the first thing they looked into, and already ruled on if it is helpful or not.  Many of us who have played on Live would agree, that it is very unlikely, but not impossible.  If the parents would have been more involved in the child’s life though, they would have a better idea as well, but this wouldn’t have happened too.

”A form of political behavior marked by obsessive preoccupation with community decline, humiliation or victimhood and by compensatory cults of unity, energy and purity, in which a mass-based party of committed nationalist militants, working in uneasy but effective collaboration with traditional elites, abandons democratic liberties and pursues with redemptive violence and without ethical or legal restraints goals of internal cleansing and external expansion.”

    Good lord,

I wish I could be as optimistic as you.  Someone says one thing, i.e. you are disbarred without the possibility to reapply, YOU hear something completely different.  Now if I read what the Florida Bar handed down, it stated that you are disbarred without the ability to reapply for the bar, period…that means you will never…wait….NEVER EVER, have the chance to reapply…in that state.  But should you come to another state, you could apply, but that tarnishing tag next to your name and record will most likely set of red flags in any other state, so good luck.

I’m not going to restate what everyone else has already said about you and Take-Two, plus I don’t think you really TRULY understand the market and economy and where its going, but thats ok, neither did I at one point, till this summer and actually spent some time learning.

You’re using 1983?  Seriously, you’re using the civil rights statute?  Well I guess that would be your only possible avenue.

By the way, I am very familiar with 42 USC 1983, mostly from the standpoint of suits against schools.

Wow, if I had hours I’d gladly explain to you why that WON’T work.

Exactly what federal civil right are you saying was violated?  I’m guessing, based on your rants about collusion, conspiracies and corruption that you’re going with due process.  Of course you have MAJOR FRE problems with getting most of your evidence in.  But that’s all I’m going to say about that since I don’t want to actually give you any help.

Or is your plan to go all First Amendment?  After all you fancy yourself such an expert there.  That’s an even bigger problem than due process.  Now granted, my knowledge of 1983 is largely based on school settings, which raises some weird 1st Amendment quirks, but you’re gonna have a damn hard time going this route.

It certainly can’t help that the Federal Courts down there seem to be wise to you and well…you’re playing with the big boys now Jack.  The Feds are much less likely to put up with crap from a disgraced ex-attorney with an axe to grind

I think this story deserves no press at all until they give up the "Oh no, it was video games fault, not our bad parenting." reply when anything about this whole situation comes up.  Jesus Christ, these parents are taking the cake on being horrid parents that blame something other than their parenting skills.

I have seen a mentally ill guy try to sue the game industry in many ways over the years and attack Janet Reno, plus somehow became  lawyer in the first place, and the best these parents can come up with is, it was the video games.  At least JT would be able to give a more in depth reason on how it could be the video games in a way we could directly argue it more, but no, they are too stupid, never involved themselves in their child’s life enough, and are absolutely at fault in this whole situation.

Even if it was someone he met online, which is EXTREMELY unlikely, it would still be his parents fault to begin with.  These parents need to be jailed.  Hell, maybe the kid is watching this whole story unfold and that will make him go hey, I am here.  Either way, their JTesk ranting with misinformation is only hurting the whole situation.

I’m tired of this. Why is no one pointing the finger at the father? You know, the man who packed his sons belongings, gave him directions, and threw him out of the house. Why hasn’t anyone come out against him? The only people I see questioning his actions are myself and a handful of people here. Blaming it on a video game makes no sense, it didn’t pack his bags and tell him to get out.

Let me explain a few things to you all, and I would like you to pay attention so you don’t embarrass yourselves further, although somehow I think that is a near impossibility:

I was called by the Canadian news service.  I didn’t call them.  They called me because (surprise) apparently the law enforcement officials thought I was indeed helpful with the information I gave them, and which I sure as Hell am not going to share here, because it’s possible that some sociopath has this kid.  The police in Barrie gave the media my name and suggested they call me.  I notice that the media didn’t call the owner of this site or any of you gamers.

Secondly, I was "disbarred" at midnight on Friday, and the call came in to me on my cell at about 6 pm yesterday, so you Jack Thompson crisis addicts can relax.  Nobody violated any law as to representing myself as an attorney.  I still was at that moment.

Further, please note that my temporary (and it is temporary) disbarment does not mean I died.  If any of you bothered to read Hal Halpin’s comments (he owns this site), he noted, correctly, that Jack Thompson is going nowhere.  Indeed, I’m now more dangerous to the video game industry because I don’t have a Nazi bar threatening me anymore.  I can do what I want to the gave industry, within the law, which I have always done.  If you think Take-Two and the other scofflaws in the game industry have seen the last of me, they can think again, if they think at all.

One more thing, before I leave today to return and torment all of you fascists some more:  Thanks to my working with Senator Clinton, Take-Two’s fortunes first began to decline back in July 2005 with her and my success agains the Hot Coffee embedding.  Strauss Zelnick then took over from the mentally challenged Paul Eibler, and he ginned the stock price up to about $26 for a common share.  That is when I sold mine.  This genius Zelnick then declined EA’s offer of $26 per share.  Take-Two’s stock, on Friday, was trading at just above $11 per share.  What a genius this guy is.

That cratering of Take-Two is just one of my accomplishments, by the grace of God, and there are many more to come.  The reports of my demise were greatly exaggerated.  I’m now planning some great new surprises for Strauss Zelnick and a few others, including some folks affiliated with this site.  This site refuses to report what is going on in my state and federal lawsuits.  You’ll find out soon enough, I guess.  Happy New Year.  Jack Thompson

So, let me get all of this right before I complain about the parents. This kids grades have been dropping since last year, the parents blame the game instead of doing you know some parenting. The parents constantly blame a game for their sons dissapearnce instead of you know blaming themselves for not being better parents (I derive this conclustion of my prior statement.) So Microsoft being the philanthorpist company they are, add generously give $25,000 to help find this kid. So instead of saying "thank you" the Father demand microsoft to hand over his son’s hard drive?

You know I may not be a computer whiz but I do know all he needs to do as far as "Speeding up the process" is to plug in the xbox, and look in the message folder. Or, you know check his myspace/face book accounts. I wonder if the parents really believe the game is at fault and are milking it for the kid to be found faster, or are just bad parents.

Let me put that on my to-don’t list.

    Andrew Eisen says:

Actually, all we know for sure is that he contacted the Vancouver Sun and told them he was a lawyer, handled a case where a kid re-enacted a video game to commit murder, and had called the Barrie PD to help.  Doesn’t mean any of those things are true.

That said, I’ve no doubt he did contact the Barrie PD and I’m sure they’ll take whatever help they can get.  Although, I’ve no idea what Thompson could have said to the police that would have been helpful.  Does he know Brandon or his parents?  No.  Does he have some insight into where Brandon went?  No.  All he has is an opinion and I don’t see that being very helpful in this case.

It has come to my attention that a certain Miami attorney contacted you earlier this week offering his services. I am writing this to discourage you from associating with that attorney. The attorney, a Mr. Jack Thompson, was disbarred on September 25, 2008. His disbarment took effect today. He was disbarred for multiple misconduct charges. These include, but are not limited to…
    • Knowingly making a false statement of material fact or law to a tribunal
    • Knowingly disobeying an obligation under the rules of a tribunal
    • Communicating the merits of the case with a judge before whom the proceeding is pending
    • Using means that have no purpose other than to embarrass, delay or burden a third person
    • Engaging in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation
    • Engaging in conduct in connection with the practice of law that is prejudicial to the administration of justice, including to knowingly or through callous indifference disparage or humiliate litigants or other lawyers
    • Making statements that the lawyer knows to be false or with reckless disregard as to the truth or falsity concerning the qualifications or integrity of a judge

I would also like to inform you that if you continue to associate with Mr. Thompson, he will do everything in his power to shift the focus of the investigation on to all things with the following in common, video games, and relevance to the case. Anything without either of the two, more importantly the former, he will dismiss as unimportant.

My source of information is the journalist website GamePolitics, which reports on political events involving video games. If you wish to speak with the person in charge of the site, contact Dennis McCauley at *SNIP Dennis’ e-mail address*.

    With all due respect,

P.S. My most sincere apologies for using this pseudonym, but I would prefer that my real name be kept from Mr. Thompson. My apologies for the inconvenience. -SD

I didn’t see the post of John Bruce’s, but I did see the Vancouver Sun story and frankly, I’m not surprise that this sociopath is continuing to go out and about interfering in investigations.  From the way the snipit reads, John Bruce is still passing himself off as an attorney, which I would think would also be an act of fraudulent and deceptive practice, among other acts.

As to the comment by the father:

"The key to finding my son lies in this XBox hard drive."

Ya know, it REALLY worries me when someone makes such a leading statement.  It may be true that finding where the kid was planning on going would be found in who he associated with.

It’s clear he left on his own.

It’s clear he abandoned his bike.

It is also entirely possible he ran into a total stranger who had nothing to do with his internet activities.

And of course, we have John Bruce who is attempting to interfere and manipulate the investigation.  If anything, if the police are allowing themselves to be manipulated by John Bruce’s rantings and deceptions, then Brandon could very well be placed into further harm by the police being directed away from the REAL search.

Okay, good find, but you took that out of context: she’s making that statement in an effort to keep the Xbox Live community from wreaking more havoc (as she believes the case to be)…I don’t feel that she has an issue with the game itself, just with the people who play it online:

“This is a huge wake-up call for me and other parents with all these Internet games,” said Brandon’s mother Angelika Crisp. “We know it’s dangerous but don’t know how complex they are.

Basically, if the game in question was a single-player game, then I don’t think they’d be bringing it up, because they apparently believe that Brandon is with other gamers that he met through Live.

So nice try, and good looking out. But I stand by that they never outright have blamed the game…they are blaming the gamers, and rightly so.

The parents made a few mistakes, and did their best to correct them. Their best wasn’t quite good enough. Yeah, WE GET THAT! We don’t need a bunch of teenage turds constantly calling adults "sucky parents".

But the bottom line is that NO ONE HAS YET TO BLAME COD4 for this kid’s disappearance; they blame the gamers that played on Live. Why can’t people get that through their heads?

  77. 0
    Pierre-Olivier says:

It is just as easy to blame the parents as it is to blame the game.

It’s no time for blaming yet. Once the kid (or at least a body) is found, now you can start with the blaming.

  78. 0
    Wolvenmoon says:

The likelihood is by now the kid’s dead.

The second likelihood is if he met someone on XBL, he probably voicechatted, meaning he could hear the other person speaking.

If he did so, he either knew the person was older than he was and went with him, or it was someone his own age. (Edit:If he knew it was someone his own age, that person wouldn’t have the resources to get him very far)

Shame on his parents for not even taking the time to listen at his door. When I was that age, my mom regularly walked up behind me and read my conversations, or would go into her room and watch TV (her room is across from mine) while I was on the phone with online friends.

It was ENTIRELY the parents’ decision to let this kid play an M rated game. They had, if they were paying attention to what this kid was doing, NO DOUBT IN THEIR MINDS that people over 18 would be ALL OVER this game, and that there would occasionally be a stalker.

It’s easy to blame problems on video games. It’s not the games’ fault the kid was kidnapped. Addiction to video games takes a LONG time to build up, or requires a mind that’s easily addicted to things, or even OCD.

In any case, the problem was already there.

More likely, though, anyone inviting other players to come over to their house would be banned off of a server in CoD 4. I’d certainly ban and call the police on anyone talking about ANYTHING that highly inappropriate on any server I ran.

Epic fail on the parent’s part for not nipping this thing in the bud. Epic fail for blaming it on anything other than themselves, and if this is just purposeful media misquoting, epic fail on the media’s part for butchering what they said.

John Bruce, you’re a sick sociopath.  You’ve actually admitted that you knowingly and intentionally interferred and manipulated the police investigation and search for Brandon, thereby possibly endangering his life further.

Your character has spoken quite well on your REAL concern for human life.

An individual who mocks the suicides of several individuals.

An individual who actually tried to place a kid playing a violent video game as being far worse than that kid having been verbally, mentally, physically, and nearly sexually abused.

An individual who tried to take advantage of the tragedy at NIU by offering to spout your agenda, then turning around and threatening to sue the college if they didn’t turn over computer evidence to you.

An individual who knowingly and intentionally lied to and deceived government officials, including the FTC by falsely and fraudulently claiming there was "gay sex" in a particular video game when there was, in fact, NO sex whatsoever.  (PROVING that your character considers lies and deceit to be "moral".)

An individual who claimed to have attempted to interfere and manipulate the Robida case, which, turned out to be false and then, when proven false, you attempted to have the DA arrested because he didn’t do things YOUR way.

And shall we get on this "fascist" bit you keep spouting?  An individual who repeatedly calls others fascist but who, himself, states that those who even verbally (even in writing) oppose his stance should be legally put to death.

On the issue of Brandon, there has been a lot of comment around his internet friends.  It appears he may have attempted to find one of them, or at least someone offline to hide with.  It was clear he attempted to travel a distance since he took his bike, which was reportedly found.

Since he considered leaving his home to be rational, it’s entirely possible that he may have considered other acts which, normally, would have not been considered good ideas and tried them.  Especially in his emotional state.  It’s entirely possible that he hitched a ride, even with a stranger.

Unfortunately, with John Bruce manipulating the investigation, that possibility may not be considered.

In reality, it’s quite the stretch.  In practice, plaintiff lawyers love to pull things out of context to say something is an admission of guilt.  If car companies become aware that some behavior is dangerous, and going forward they put a warning in owner’s manuals not to do that behavior, it would seem like they’re trying to prevent accidents and improve safety.  But to the plaintiff bar it’s a sign that they knew about the original hazard but chose to cut costs by not saying anything about it until faced with lawsuits.

    Ba dum dum.

Well its hard to understand without first understanding that Jack is likely off his meds.  But you see he thinks that by having media banned he is protecting the First Amendment.  And by defending media we are against the First Amendment.

Don’t think about it too hard though, Jack’s illogic is not to be understood by a functional mind.

What if, as I suspect is true, the parents are the ones who know where their child really is?  The longer we wait to begin questioning their involvement, the less likely the chance of seeing justice done are.  Don’t let one incident color your opinion; think rationally.  There is no time for emotion here, not yet.

Because I had a dear friend of mine who went and disappeared 8 months ago and there was blame that was pointed between the parents and counsellors of the university she went to, Carleton/

When we’re all pointing fingers at each other like this, we waste time. When we try and figure out the reasons of disappearance, we waste time. It was too late regardless for my friend, she fell through the ice at the Rideau Canal, but there’s still hope for this kid.

Okay people, we need to stop attacking Jack Thompson. The group on Facebook has been wanred not to trust Jack Thompson and that he is disbarred. The minute I heard this news this morning, I posted it up on that group.

And stop pointing fingers at each other. First of all, let’s try and fin this kid. Then we can whine and complain at the causes later on/

He seems absolutely convinced his son met someone online and has gone to meet them or something. I hardly think that CoD4 multiplayer is the likeliest place to make internet friends.

That makes no sense, since his dad isn’t a reporter so there’d be no point in ‘angling.’

Other than that, maybe he already checked everything else and the xbox hard drive is his last hope?

I see the father is milking the gamer angle for all it is worth, still. Why idn’t he equally concerned about hi sons facebook/myspace/msn messenger contact and logs as well?

But that would hardly be media worthy, now, would it? I don’t like his angling one little bit.

Who paid for the account has no bearing here.  Microsoft has a process for these type of things and they only deal with the police directly.

Their process aside, I’m sure that’s not what may be taking up the time.  If the kid is as "obsessed" as the father claims then the number of people the kid could have played a game with would easily be in the hundreds if not thousands.  With that many possibilities it would take some time to vette them all and come up with any real possible leads.

There is no legal red tape, the FATHER paid for the account. So Microsoft isn’t giving away anyone else’s private information.

As evidenced by the fact that the police are tracking down all the IP addresses of the people he’s had contact with lately…

Whilst I commend Jack for wanting to help find Brandon, and actually, to a degree, agree with his comments that withdrawal from any kind of addiction (though, I emphasise, not a chemical one, so I wouldn’t strictly classify it as ‘cold turkey’) is a risky busniess, I DO think that someone from Canada should Email the Editor at the Sun and inform them of the whole story regarding him for the sake of accuracy.

For example ‘one of his cases’ is a pretty vague term, since part of the reason he was disbarred was because of his behaviour on ‘one of those cases’, which is still ongoing as far as I can discern, nothing has been proved either way, and since the law has a requirement of innocent until proven guilty, that’s a rather large misrepresentation on his part, assuming he is referring to the Alabama case, which isn’t made clear at all.

Didn’t Jack’s disbarrment take effect today (or is it tomorrow?).  If he’s disbarred and still representing himself as an attorney he’s violating the law.  In any case, the media should not be calling him an attorney in any way, shape or form.

not really, the original article was posted yesterday

In any case, good for MS.  I am very interested in if he was even playing COD4.  Given the holes.  There are definite problems with this story and the police need to be looking at the family.  I’m sorry, but the sad truth is that in these kind of cases the family is very often involved.

Nice of MS to help out I suppose. Although I’m sure the fact that they’re doing much more to actually help the situation than Thompson won’t stop him from continuing to speak of Microsoft as if it were an evil empire.

I guess the police and the newspaper don’t know that JT was in the process of being disbarred when he contacted them.

Its good to see MS really helping though. I know if a kid showed up at my door because of a fight with his parents, and there was a $25k reward for returning him, I would be driving him up there personally. Now that its $50k its even more incentive for anyone that might be helping him to take him home or at least let them know where he is.

My god, would Jack STOP chasing ambulences…my #(%@$ing GOD. Jack leave us Canadians alone. You are disbarred now, go the hell away.

Back to the main topic, well that is nice that Microsoft is throwing some of their weight behind this. I wish nothing but the best for the good officers of Barrie, Ontario and its citizens in the search of the kid. I just really hope the kid is okay, but if he has been missing this long…my optimistic hope is quick fading :\

still childish and clueless as ever eh jackie boy??? The whole deal with microsoft is not an admission of guilt(what are they guilty of, making fps games, last I checked thats ont a crime nor is selling the game.)Microsoft is willing to help with the investigation to find this boy, It has nothing to do with guilt. just cause the game industry willing to offer help to find this boy.

You see, you live in your own fantasy world, you seem to think that you are winning but alas, you are losing, you have been disbarred from practicing law for good. Face it and quit before you embarass yourself even further.
