Penny Arcade Launches 2008 Child’s Play Charity Drive

Penny Arcade has kicked off the 2008 campaign for its amazing Child’s Play charity, and Chris Morris at Forbes serves up some history detailing how the PA guys popularized the concept of gamers giving back:

It’s funny what a little righteous anger can do. Five years ago, Mike Krahulik, co-founder of the popular Penny Arcade Web site, read yet another editorial decrying video games as tools of violence that desensitized America’s youth.

To combat the bad press, he and partner Jerry Holkins decided to launch a charity drive that encouraged readers to send them games or cash, and they would pass the donations to Seattle’s Children’s Hospital…

They ended up receiving $225,000 in video game and toy donations, along with another $26,000 in cash… To date, Child’s Play has raised over $3.5 million in cash and toy donations. The charity has gone from improvised effort to nonprofit organization. And recipient hospitals have grown from one to 40.

GP: What an outstanding thing to do. While there are a number of other gamer-centric charitable efforts, it’s fair to say that Child’s Play sets the standard.

That’s why it’s so unbelievable that in 2005 Jack Thompson tried to have the Penny Arcade guys arrested.

  1. Thomas McKenna says:

I still remember that.  Truely an awsome moment of the internet, and one of the biggest disgraces Jack was dealt.  Plus a charity got a bunch of money, so everyone wins.

  2. Paul T Shoink says:

"Al Capone was the leading contributor to charities in Chicago"

Hm… so even Al Capone is more caring to those less fortunate than Jack Thompson?  Al Capone is a better person than Jack Thompson? Al Capone is more generous and nicer than Jack Thompson?

    Thanks for pointing that out!

  3. Doomsong says:

Either that… or he’s pissed because they’re still relevant and he’s not.

  4. Mr.Pat says:

I think deep down he’s just angry and bitter that the guys at Penny-Arcade proved that they’re better people than he is.

Then again, all you have to do is wake up each morning to confirm you’re a better human being than John Bruce Thompson.

  5. Inimical says:

Oh right, this was when Mike and Jerry went and made good on a promise Jack made when he didn’t have the testicular fortitude to do so himself.

Of course… it was just a sattire. I guess it is a good thing he didn’t write that cheque, though… you know, since he doesn’t have a job anymore.

  6. Michael Chandra says:

"Our preliminary review of the document has led us to believe that it is most likely a civil matter," police spokeswoman Deborah Brown said, "but we have forwarded it to the chief of our criminal investigations bureau to make sure that it is correct."

We never heard of it again. Case closed.

  7. GONK. says:

I saw your recent message in which you were claiming/predenting you were a juris doctor – you didn’t have to spam it 10 times, you know. Now, tell us again why you want us to believe you’re now a mental health expert? And tell us slowly, so you can THINK about what you’re saying.

No, scratch that – you’ve proven once again that you are physically incapable of thinking or telling the truth. YOU’RE LYING ABOUT "PREDICTING" COLUMBINE AGAIN, you were just caught jerking off to the bodies while falsely claiming to be "saving lives." And you repeated this crap with V-Tech and Salt Lake. And have you forgotten again that your absolute opposition to telling the truth is one of the reasons you were permanently disbarred? You couldn’t even make up a convincing story about having a heart condition… You don’t have a heart.

People, let’s be honest here. If we want to see anything remotely resembling a sane and even-handed discussion about questionable media content and apparent similarities with real-life crimes, then all the self-claimed moral crusaders – the stupid bastards like Thompson who are guilty as charged of encouraging, aiding and trivializing the real-life crimes to begin with – need to be culled. They can’t and don’t want to be reasoned with, this they have repeatedly made perfectly clear.

  8. Deamian says:

"Al Capone was the leading contributor to charities in Chicago, so your point would be what, Dennis?"

Well… here’s a point ; Al Capone donated, and he was a criminal. You are legit, and you are constantly hurting the next guy to you, always on the prowl for the next target of easy lawsuits… One was helping his kin, the other is living like a parasite on society. I let you guess who’s who, John, with a hint ; the probable nicer guy died.

It’s pretty fucking obvious, John. Gamers have spoken. The Florida Bar has spoken. The LAW, both state and federal, has spoken. They’ve all said : "John Bruce Thompson, stop. Now. You’re hurting herself." Time to listen. Oops! Too late.

  9. Zerodash says:

And Jack still managed to work with them to (almost) attend PAX.  That is until he broke the rules (as he always does) and chickened out (as he always does).

He thinks the Penny Arcade guys are criminals…but then, he loves criminals- that’s why he fights so hard to get them off scott free.  Its so Christian to fight to get a convicted rapist out of prison, isn’t it?

  10. BearDogg-X says:

What "illegal" activities, Metropolitian Moron of Miami? Of course, you were disbarred for your illegal and unethical activities yourself, so your point would be what, exactly?

And what kind of illegal activities they would’ve participated? What makes you say that it was them who supposely sent people to supposely harass you.

And even if Al Capone was the leading contributor to charities back at that time, what would it change to the affair at hand? Probably because you compared the gaming industry so many times with the mafia.

    You really are paranoid.

  12. Erik says:

You already posted this in this thread you senile fuckjob.  Furthermore Penny-Arcade has never forced annyone to harass you.  Sure they point out what a fuckjob you are.  And people, logically, treat you like a fuckjob.  So live with the consequences of your actions.  Like your buddy Devan is doing rotting in jail.

Heh…EKZ and GP should post this each time he breaks one of the rules rather than just taking it down.  Maybe then he’ll get around to understanding it.

  16. Erik says:

Your senility is getting worse fuckjob.  Your post is obviously still there.  Secondly, for someone who gets on people’s case about using their legal names don’t get pissy when we use your JOHN.

John Bruce, I don’t give a disbarred attorney’s ass what you "go by." Nicknames are for people familiar with eachother. I am not your friend and never would be. Hence I will go by your given "Christian" name.

Ok, I cracked a smile at christian, heh.

  19. nightwng2000 says:

Oh, look kids, it’s a sociopath!

Yes, children, these now rare, soon to be extinct creatures can be found in some of the darkest, skankiest places on Earth.  Sometimes, they run in packs, while others are so antisocial that even many of their own kind ostricize them.

They come in many shapes and sizes.  And their bigotry and hate and high level of ignorance tend to come from a variety of sources.  This particular sociopath’s anti-social behavior comes from its religious dogma which believes that Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Religion ONLY apply to itself.  Bigotry and hate focused on sexuality and hobby interests (ranging from video games, music, books, TV shows, and other forms of hobbies), as well as racial references.

It tended to use lies, deceit, misinformation, veiled threats, hypocriscy, misuse of individuals, families, and communities that suffered tragedies, and other immoral acts to push its agenda.  Oddly enough, it claimed a moral crusade as its justification, while using immoral, dishonorable, and unethical tactics to do so.  This resulted in the revelation that the "God" it worshipped was actually a Demon-Pretender-To-The-Throne-Of-Heaven.

Note the latest event in its history.  It has long since claimed to want to "protect the children!" and be of a "Christian" faith.  Yet, here we see its condemnation of an organization which is doing good for children in pain and need.  Note that such immoral acts are not unique in its nature.

These creatures, while loud and even receiving some notice, are still becoming extinct.  And while we may say good riddance once they are no more a blight on the face of our Earth, we must still remember them.  For in forgetting, will we create more.  We will not dwell on them.  But we will educate our newest generations in the hopes that more shall not infest our society and our world ever again.

Now, let’s move on from denizen of the dark and examine the good which is a part of our world.  Here we have Penny Arcade and their Child’s Play charity.  A charity which aforementioned sociopath John Bruce "Jack" Thompson holds in such contempt….

What exactly have you done for anybody other than pursue your own demented objectives without any consideration for your fellow man? What have you done but insult people and force your beliefs on them? What have you done but accuse everyone of plotting against you in some massive conspiracy?

You have given nowhere near as much as Tyko and Gabe have given, and I doubt you ever fucking will. Your bias against gamers is disgusting and your selfish attitude only cements my disgust.

I remember once, when I was young, I went to the zoo and there was this monkey there that would, when offered a peanut, do all kinds of ridiculous acts to please the crowds.

Nowadays of course, I’m older, and would probably consider that a bit cruel to the monkey, but I can’t read one of Jack’s posts without thinking about it, so yes, I suppose we are being a bit cruel, but it’s just so much fun to see what the monkey will do for a peanut 😉

I have been, and will continue to be, a contributer to this fine charity.  Last year I donated to a nearby Children’s Hospital (Cincinatti, Ohio… I’m disappointed that the Columbus hospital still hasen’t been added to the list).  Things are a little tighter this year, so I’ll probably won’t be able to donate as much, though.  But still, this is one charity where I know the benefit is worth the effort.  Hospitals can be a dull or even scary place for kids, and helping to bring some entertainment to them makes a difference.  Plus, the way the charity is set up, there’s almost no overhead, so most of our contributions actually go straight to the hospitals.

  37. GoodRobotUs says:

He only has his office to be crazy in now, he’s become exactly his own stereotype of a ‘gamer’ , some recluse who has no offline life worth living, who browses the internet in a desperate attempt to make other people as miserable as he has made himself with his own bile and hatred.

  38. mogbert says:

Child’s Play is the main charitable organization I support. My wife send some charity out to other places, but I never really trust most of them. With most charities, I think I’ve hear ranges between 10% to 35% of peoples donations actually going to the cause, where the rest goes to "overhead expenses" like the organizers third BMW.

I think the Child’s Play is different as a lot of the time, the money and items don’t even go through them. You can send the money and games directly to the hospital of your choice. I also think that a lot, most, or maybe all of the work is done by volunteers. I know it was the first couple of times. They just put out the word that they could use a hand and people showed up.

As for JT, he doesn’t realize that PA doesn’t send people to harrass him, he does it to himself. His information is a matter of public record as are his statements. People who disagree with him are likely to call him, or if they are close knock on is door. I read PA often, and they have NEVER condoned harrassing Him. There method was a lot better, donating the money he reneged on. See, that’s the definition of the word "class". JT is like a school in summer… no class (anyone else remember Fat Albert?).

JT getting first on an article? He must be camping GP like crazy… of course him doing anything like crazy doesn’t surprise me.
