Florida A.G. Once Fretted About Wiimote, Now on ESRB Bandwagon

November 28, 2008 -

When gamers last heard from Bill McCollum, the Florida Attorney General was fretting that the motion-controlled Wii version of Manhunt 2 would have a generation of kids practicing to be killers. As GamePolitics reported in June of 2007, McCollum apparently got that idea from Jack Thompson.

These days, McCollum is, like many political colleagues in other states, urging parents to follow ESRB content ratings while shopping for holiday gifts. A press release on his official website quotes the Republican A.G.:

Though the holiday season is one of the busiest times of year, it is also perhaps the most important time of the year for consumers to make sure they know what they're buying for their loved ones. The ESRB rating system provides parents and others with age and content information which can be informative tools when purchasing games for family and friends.

McCollum's press release also quotes ESRB head Patricia Vance as well as ESA CEO Michael Gallagher.

But not Jack Thompson.

Re: Florida A.G. Once Fretted About Wiimote, Now on ESRB

If you're going to post nothing but a strongly worded insult, yes.  Although Thompson's response is not much more than an insult itself, it's relatively tame and not completely unmerited.

Andrew Eisen

Re: Florida A.G. Once Fretted About Wiimote, Now on ESRB

Unmerited or undeserved?
To be honest, I fail to find merit in anything that Jack Thompson has ever done or attempted to do.  He's wasted money, time, and most of all, he's wronged the dead.  Over and over and over again.

Of course, if you think we in some small way 'deserve' Jack Thompson's nonsense and base insults coming from someone who, let's face it, is a poor excuse for a person, an all around asshole, and the kind of man who would go goose stepping with the KKK if he thought it would further his agenda, then I suggest you have your head examined.

Come now Andrew, its not like Dennis is responsible for what we say to Jackass McGee up there.

You know, sir, when you're a lawyer, you're supposed to have the patience to at least skim through something, if not read it in its entirety. (preferably the latter) If you can't do that here, it's no wonder why you seemed to forget everything you learned at Vanderbilt.

Re: Florida A.G. Once Fretted About Wiimote, Now on ESRB

And it's also most heart-warming to see that you still haven't learnt -- and never will -- that once you recklessly commit yourself in writing, it ain't easy to back-pedal away from what you've written. What you wrote was:

"I am working with a young man in prison to get a new trial because he copycatted a violent game."

Does that sound to you as if all you're doing is writing to someone to tell them they need a lawyer? If it does, good for you. But to a reasonable and sane person it sounds as if you are actively involved in (i.e., "working with") the young man's case with the stated objective of securing him a new trial.

Might I suggest that you load that shotgun you love to discharge at your own foot with double-"0" buckshot? I think you'll find it to be a most effective choice of ammunition.

Re: Florida A.G. Once Fretted About Wiimote, Now on ESRB

As a matter of fact, Jack-O, I do think that you telling someone they need a lawyer and otherwise advising them on a legal predicament is offering legal advice. Offering legal advice is practicing law. Practicing law without a license to do so is, I believe, the unauthorized practice of law. You don't see it that way, I know. But you didn't see a permanent disbarment coming your way, either, did you?

Good luck getting someone to believe a court-proven liar...

Re: Florida A.G. Once Fretted About Wiimote, Now on ESRB

This is such an utterly pathetic attempt, yet again, by Dennis McCauley and this site's owner, Hal Halpin of the ECA (email Hal at *SNIP* to complain), to turn a news story into yet another lame excuse to trash me.

Here are the facts, which John Adamas said are "stubborn things," which this site routinely chooses to ignore:

What McCollum is doing now is totally, 100% consistent with what he did previously, per my urging, which was to use his office to express concern and a warning that kids should not be allowed to play Manhunt II on the Nintendo Wii system.  Here is what GamePolitics itself reported back then on June 6, 2007 because of my letter:

UPDATE: GP has received the following comment from A.G. McCollum's Press Secretary:

Attorney General Bill McCollum is concerned about any games which may instill violence in children, particularly games that encourage children to engage in violent behavior, even in simulation. He believes it is important to help protect children from influences which may introduce violence into their lives and stresses the importance of parental involvement in the efforts to keep these influences out of our homes and away from our families.

Read the above, gamers, and tell me what McCollum has done now that is inconsistent with what he did before, and that is somehow some sort of backing away from his concerns because I was not involved in this?  Dennis, we're waiting for you to explain to the readers here why you would suggest that McCollum has back down one iota.  All he is now saying, which he said previously a year and one-half ago, is that parents should not allow their kids to play these Mature games and to use the ESRB rating system.

Instead of reporting the truth, Dennis McCauley, as he always does, misrepresents what I do and have done on these game issues.  My only issue is very simple:  Mature games should not be sold to kids under 17 when their parents are not there to participate in the purchase.  That is what the freaking ESRB label is there for--to warn both parents and retailers.  Period.

Instead, we have this site, yet again, suggesting that I have some agenda other than that, that McCollum has backed away because I have been temporarily disbarred, blah, blah, blah, blah.

The fact is that McCollum has repeatedly written me and thanked me for educating him on this subject.  He would not have been educated otherwise.  And despite the wishes here expressed to the contrary, I am all over this same issue now and until I die.  I have been asked to submit a video game bill to a western state in a few weeks.  I am working with the people in Germany regarding EA's Godfather.  I am working with a young man in prison to get a new trial because he copycatted a violent game.  Your own anti-free speech fascist, Hal Halpin, has told you knuckleheads to get used to the idea that Jack Thompson is not going anywhere.  I'm not.  I'm in the game industry's face, and now I don't have The Bar to harass me in doing so.

You all certainly are paranoid about a guy who supposedly is irrelevant and is not listened to by anyone anymore.

Well, you ought to be afraid.  I'm on track to accomplish my goals, and there is not a freaking thing any of you nerds can do about it.  Jack Thompson

Re: Florida A.G. Once Fretted About Wiimote, Now on ESRB

All I see is yet another pathetic attempt at trying to stay relevant since being exposed by various sources as a liar and a fraud.

I have been asked to submit a video game bill to a western state in a few weeks.

Let's see, Washington state and California's out since both already lost in the courts and the latter's under an appeal that looks likely to fail. That leaves Utah(most likely scenario, as they've tried before), Oregon, Alaska, Hawaii, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and Nevada.

I am working with the people in Germany regarding EA's Godfather.

How ironic that a guy obsessed with calling people here Nazi epithets is working with a group of Neo-Nazi politicians.

I am working with a young man in prison to get a new trial because he copycatted a violent game.

Paranoid?  We weren't paranoid about you before your disbarment.  Really name one law you've penned which hasn't been ruled unconstitutional.  Name one game you've prevented from coming out.  Name even one video game website that you have successfully shut down.

As for your lie regarding your "one issue", really get a clue.  The MPAA has lasted a long time without force of law behind its ratings.  And when you look at the most recent FTC study you will see that the video game industry hands down beats the long standing movie industry in keeping such material out of the hands of children.

So John boy.  Why should the video game industry sales have force of law where movie sales have not for quite a long time?
