“Morally Responsible” Investment Firm Goes Gay Bashing in Games

The Timothy Plan, a Florida investment firm which bills itself as "conservative Christian," is warning holiday-shopping parents away from what it calls the 30 "most offensive" video games.

While the usual suspects (GTA IV, Saints Row 2, Blitz the League II) make the list, there are some surprises as well, including the T-rated Bully: Scholarship Edition and World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade.

In its game rankings, the organization displays an obvious anti-gay bias. While it evaluates titles for sex and nudity, a gay/lesbian rating is also included, meaning that a game with a gay sexual encounter might get a double whammy when compared to a game where the sex is of the straight variety. This effect, for instance, pushes Fable II onto the group’s most offensive list. Along that line a report prepared by the Timothy Plan contains this rather bizarre comment:

Army of Two: Homosexual Encounters: …Somewhat homo-erotic undertones between the two main characters are present.

WoW made it onto the dirty thirty, thanks to a high "addiction" rating as well as a high rating for alcohol use (curse you, Noggenfogger elixir!).

How the group determined the addiction rank is really quite unfathomable. WoW received a 3, for example, the worst possible rating, while Lord of the Rings Online got a 1 and Age of Conan a 2. In fact, all of the MMOs were tagged for addiction as well as some multiplayer games like Halo 3. A few games (The Darkness, Devil May Cry 4) were punished for "demonic" references.

Timothy Plan president Art Ally (left) comments:

Many, if not most, parents who buy their kids video games really don’t know the extent of sex and violence imbedded in them. From drug use, prostitution, murder and mayhem to vulgar profanity and blasphemy these games have become a powerfully negative influence on our kids…

I believe, if parents would take a moment to look at the report we’ve created, their game selections would be quite different.

The group maintains a corporate "hall of shame" which includes game publishers EA, Take-Two and Microsoft. The Timothy Plan also offers to screen your portfolio to see if any of your mutual funds have investments in shameful companies.

So helpful!

Dude, did you even read the post you responded to past "douche"

I said that they are douches for treated gays like second class citizens how they treat me has nothing to do with it, they haven’t hurt my feelings, just my faith in humanity.  Homophobes like them took away homosexuals right to marry with proposition H8.  Gays need and deserve the finantial benefites that straites have for marrying espesially now in this finantial crisis.

Please try to understand, it is our sense of justice that all or most people have that leads us to bitch about someone elses beliefs.  And while it is somewhat assholish of us to say that these people shouldn’t be allowed to have their opinions, keep in mind that it is the same opinion that lead to Poposition H8 being passed and the death of Mathew Shepard, and we tend to think of those events when we see or hear about homophobic practices or beliefs

Just know this I and many if not all on this forum ranting about homophobia would never in a million years have the first amendment rights of these people taken away; I would die before allowing anyone to take away the first amendment rights of anyone else.  We only want them to stop oppessing others, that’s it, they can say whatever they want.  As a secular humanist I cannot stand people that would take away the rights of others but I would never take away their rights

I disapprove of what they say, but I will defend to the death their right to say it.

You’re right, sometimes it’s misleading. For instance I know of at least one game that got bumped up to a T rating cause one character farts. Crude Humor coupled with Cartoon Violence was enough to shove it from a E10+ to a T rating.

And this was a game with Mario and other classic Nintendo characters in it. Which just goes to show how strict the ESRB ratings are.

  42. 0
    Sai says:

It’s incredibly easy, parents just don’t make an effort. All the ratings and descriptors are on the box of every video game plain as day. If parents are still having trouble comprehending its not to hard to use the Google and find about a million websites for parents, by parents to help them be aware of game content. That people will just sit there shrugging their shoulders while letting their kids get into something they’re unsure of because they’d rather say "Well by golly I just don’t understand this stuff" than even attempt to do a little research is no one’s fault but their own.

I mean if your kid wanted to get into, say, kick-boxing, would you not research the sport and safety equipment a little?

    Sai says:

To say a game is bad because the group personally thinks two characters have "gay undertones" is… what? Paranoid that’s what. That would be like rating a Spongebob DVD "R" because of that group that claimed Spongebob is gay.

    Kincyr says:

One M game is not equal to another.

that’s why the back of the package has content descriptors explaining why the game is rated M. And while the ESRB isn’t 100% accurate, that’s because they err on the side of caution: some games get descriptors for content that isn’t in the game. e.g. there might be a descriptor for partial nudity in a game that has just as much nudity as a TV show rated TV-PG

    ThinkWithYourHeart says:

No.  It is not homophobic.  People believe in different things based on their moral code.  To some, homosexuality is a sin.  That does not mean they hate homosexuals.  It is the lifestyle they are not comfortable being a part of.  If that is the case, they will not want their little boys kissing other little boys.  To me it is a reasonable request.

    ThinkWithYourHeart says:

I am not demonizing the ESRB.  They are good, as a basic guide.  Like I said, one M Rating is not the same as another.  Details are also important to make informed decisions.  In a perfect world, parents would sit and play the games with their children.  When issues arise, make it a learning cue.

Having a column with themes containing Gay/Lesbian content does not make the list homophobic.  It is an issue that the ESRB does not put in their ratings and parents should have a right to decide if they want their child to participate.  Otherwise you are craming your views and values on them.

    In response to thinkwithyourheart…

I’m not forcing anyone to do anything, it’s only a comment on a blog, it’s not gonna get anything done. I’m not telling parents how to raise their kids, I’m telling them to start raising them in the first place and stop looking to other people for answers instead of using their own brains. Some people have problems with kids playing mature video games and that’s completely within their rights, it’s when they condemn the games as the spawn of satan and try to make laws so that nobody can play them that bugs me. I’m saying that not everybody has to like them but they’re not harmful as long as you’re kid has been raised in a way that he/she knows what’s right and wrong.

The list doesn’t do anything but preach homophobia and general stupidity. You don’t need a biased and sometimes downright untruthful list to make decisions about what video games your child should play, the industry provides all the information they need and they’re just too stupid to take advantage of it. No amount of demonizing the ESRB will change that. We’re not trying to hide anything, most parents are just clueless on the subject because they think everything should be done for them and that if they have to do any real parenting then people are expecting too much of them.

So saying someone is a douche, or they made you angry/hurt your feelings doesn’t mean that you are any less of a hypocrite if you start waving the tolerance banner while bitching about someone elses beliefs.  I have more respect for people who don’t hide behind that bullshit.  Now I haven’t really followed your posts so I don’t know if anything I’ve said applies to you.

    Good Lord says:

And you have some reading comprehension problems. You are not being forced to do anything except read, and take an active role in the parenting of your children. If you can’t take responsibility for the media your children consume, perhaps you’re not ready to be a parent. Being a parent means making informed decisions that will keep your child safe, and sometimes that means doing a little extra research on your own.

"Not everyone feels it is ok to play with drugs, drink alcohol, gamble, have sex with multiple persons."

And that’s exactly why the ESRB puts ratings and content descriptors RIGHT ON THE BOX of the game you’re buying for your child. If you can’t take the two seconds necessary to check the age rating on the video game little Timmy’s begging you to buy for him, then your parenting skills are most definitely suspect.

Because ESRB is not accurate.  They don’t completely play the games they review.  One M game is not equal to another.  Some T games should be M games.  Parents think M means blood and guts and not the other stuff that is in it.  Video games are not same as what they remember….  Mario Brothers, Frogger, Donkey Kong.  Not injecting drugs into their player’s arm!

If you think they’re doing a bad job you should play a game or two and then tell me if the content description is wrong, because it wont be.

The problem with these parents, and this isn’t just restricted to video game issues, is that they’re focusing so much on making rules and laws for their children to have to follow, and not even stopping for a second to tell them why the rules are there, or even to give them the sense to follow the rules. Rules, without a reason or will to follow them, are absolutely useless. If their kids are playing M games at their friend’s houses when they’re not supposed to be, then it’s time to cut the parental commandment crap and start actually talking to your kid about it. And even if there’s "bad" stuff in these games, what’s the big deal? There’s absolutely nothing wrong with doing drugs or killing people for fun in a video game as long as you know not to do it in real life. It’s all for FUN, hence the adding of the word GAME at the end of VIDEO GAMES. I brutally murdered a man in a video game with a baseball bat the other day (The overseer, in Fallout 3, hope you guys did the same), and it has never seriously crossed my mind in any point in my life that I should do anything even resembling that in real life.

This list is a bad thing, because it’s complete bullshit and it’s exactly what parents look to when they’re lost and don’t know what to think about their kids’ video games. It’s misinforming parents who are too lazy to make their own decisions, which at this point and time in America is just about everyone.

I still don’t understand how parents have trouble remembering the ratings, and frankly I think it’s because they’re not trying at all. They’re expecting the government to step in and do the parenting for them. Three fucking letters, that’s all it is (primarily). If they were really struggling with it they could just make a cheat sheet, copying down stuff from the ESRB website and keep it in their pocket every time they go to rent movies and games and stuff. They remember the movie rating system, why is the game rating system too hard for them to comprehend?

Yup, that is one option, but simply looking at a box and saying "There’s an M that means no!" is not involved parenting, it’s a fucking cop out.

If you really want to be involved you should know your kid , what they can and cannot handle and be able to make judgement weather or not the kid (all the way up to age 18) is capable of handling the game.

If a list says game "X" has titties, but game "Y" only shows some butt, that might be useful to somebody.  Game "X" has decapitation but game "Y" has mild violence, that could be useful.  It’s a way for an involved but non-game parent to make some choices.  Personally game "X" is looking pretty cool.

No parents are stupid for actully falling for what the kids say about the games..I believe that no parents want to say no to their kids now because this is the new scapegoat and parents dont take the blame for buying their kids m rated games..If they are really against it then you  know waht dont buy the games dont buy the system and if it comes to it tell the kids "you want those games you wait til u are 18 and out of my house" i’m not buying any of this "parents dont have a way to get involved" either find a way or tell the kid "no i am not buying it"

Obviously you cannot read and claim things that are not true.  Just as you have a right to believe what you want, others have rights too.  They are not trying to take away your right, so back off.  Parents do not know what their kids are experiencing, if there is a way for them to find out – kudos!  Children are innocent and impressionable.  Are you saying we shouldn’t care about kids?  Should trust them play safely with fire?  No.  Parents birthed their child, not you.  Let them raise their children they way they morally feel is right, not what "you" feel is right.  It is their soul they are worried about, not yours.

The Timothy Plan is not trying to shut down the games, just informing parents.  There was nothing judgmental mentioned on their website or the guide.  The only judging is coming from you all.

Is there a die-hard Christian in the audience? I need an answer to a question that has been plaguing me for the longest time… If I sound offensive, I don’t mean to. This is a serious question.

Why do Christians pick and choose what to take from the Bible? I don’t get it. There are some passages in the Bible that are so completely ludicrous, ignorant, and irrelevant of society today that it’s scary. Stuff like…
"Women should be silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak, but should be submissive, as the law also says." (1 Corinthians 14:34)
"But if … evidences of virginity are not found for the young woman, then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones…" (Deuteronomy 22:20,21)
"If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched." (Mark 9:43)
"And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat." (Leviticus 26:29)

I mean, I don’t get why you guys pick and choose which Bible verses are relevant today and which aren’t. I mean, apparently because it’s in the Bible, homosexuality isn’t okay, but even though cannibalism is said to be just fine in the Bible, you don’t see any Christians eating eachother. It’s just all so contradictory and somewhat hypocritical.

    I don’t get religion.

Before I get into details here is the short verion: Duh, M rated games aren’t for kids.

    now for the long version:

As a Christian myself and a long time gamer, i agree, this list is just dumb.

I, for one, am tired of every goup out there trying to come up with their own list of ‘most offensive game ever!!!’ and then they go on to cite how an M rated game is damaging to children and how nobody tells the parents how violent and gory the game is. The rating of M should clue you in on that fact.

Pretty soon they’re going to have to include red warning lights and flashing strobe lights with sirens built into the box that way parents can’t miss these horrible games. With all these groups and individuals complaining about parents not doing their job the one thing that I have failed to see them bring forth is any kind of valid, factual statistic or study showing there is a mass problem of parents buying young children M rated games. everyone just ASSUMES this as a fact. You can’t count the young adults (15ish-17) as at that point you should start giving them some resposibility and kids tend to start acting mature at different ages. i’m talking about the real root of the controversy, that kids that are way too young to be playing these games actually ARE playing these games without the parents knowing how violent and gory they are. Some parents actually don’t care and you will never fix that because that is simply how they choose to live their life and raise their child. If the neglect is bad enough then child services may have to step in but you can’t blame that on the gaming industry.

On a side note: When I was younger, at our youth Bible studies, after we were done we’d get some 4 player halo matches going. ahh, good times :)

    Twin-Skies says:

The funny thing is that a typical fundie’s gay hate stems mostly from Bible’s book of Leviticus Deoteronomy. I’m not even sure why they’re so focused on those books, given that they’re in the Old Testament and Christians are supposed to be following the teachings of Jesus in the New Testament. The OT is strictly Hebrew tradition – the only reason I had to take it up in theology class was as a form of socio/anthropological analysis of the society Chrisianity was coming from. My proffs had vocally stated it would be plain impractical and inhumane to even try to implement them (especially since a lot of the college proffs were gay as well).

More importantly however, along that tract about gays being an "abomination," Leviticus also states that eating shellfish is sinful, and that adultery is punishable by stoning to death. Given how so many of these right-wing gay haters have divorced on more than on occasion (hear that, Newt Gingrich?), which is considered adultery according to, I see these people as nothing more than self-absorbed bigots attempting to candy-coat their hate with their pathetic understanding of a religion, always willing to twist the old teachings to push their own agenda.

To have them call you a heathen who doesn’t believe in the same brand of religion as them is almost a mark of honor.

An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.

Ok, lets face it.  Homosexuality is still an "issue."  Americans are 50/50 when considering gay marriage.  Just because 50% are on your choosen side, doesn’t mean the other 50% need to conform.  Vise versa.  Seriously, if we were all alike on this planet, it would be one boring place.

Bashing Christians and comparing them to racists is way out of line.  If you read the threads on this page it is filled with hate on "your" side, not theirs.  In actuality, Christians who are not allowed to be Christians in other countries die for their faith, can you say you would die for your beliefs?  Girls are getting raped and then sentenced to death for adultry because they read the Bible.  I hear both sides and both have every right to believe what they want.  Christians believe they will go to heaven when they die, if they are wrong, then they just die like the rest.  If you believe you just die and are wrong, well eternity is a very long time to burn.  Lets just hope you are not wrong.

No one asked ESRB to publish that information, including me.  I am stating that it is not the end all – be all.  There is more to intelligence than bleeps of information.

I looked up some of the details the list included (had to remove the word "Timothy Plan" to get past all the new stuff).  They are not in the business of reviewing video games; they are offering their findings to the public, that is all.  Free speech.  And… the information they posted is all over the web if you guys would just read.  Maybe you don’t notice some of the issues because you are immune – but some do notice.  And the list is not talking to you, it is talking to parents.  Are you worried your parents are going to find out what you have been playing?

Another response to thinkwithyourheart (I’ll get bored of this eventually)…

That does make it homophobic. People who believe that homosexuals are sinners and are going to hell are homophobes, and to put a "homosexual romance" tag on the back of games would be giving in to their views and I personally don’t think they deserve to be taken seriously enough for that to happen. I think a "sexual content" tag works well enough, because after all, it doesn’t make a bit of difference what gender the lovers are, stating otherwise would be conforming to the religious group’s views, something the ESRB shouldn’t have to do to please a few insane people. Asking the ESRB to raise maturity ratings or tag certain games because of homosexual romance is like tagging a game because there’s mixed-race relationships in it, or for simply having black people in it. Homophobics are on the same level as racists, conforming to one is like conforming to the other. There’s no lesser of two evils, they’re both equally unfair and cruel.

The problem is though you can physically say to seperate church and state simply puts forth that no religion can hold political power in the sense within the government itself.   It’s easy to say that the Christian Church nor any other religion has any direct control in teh development of laws itself.  It comes down to who is elected to uphold and create the law regardless of whether they are religious or not.

However, you cannot erase what people believe quiet so easily.  People, including elected offoicals, have there own opinions and can stem from religion as well, however saying this is a violation of the seperate of church and state isn’t really the case. People can get married without requiring the instituation of a religion at all.

oy oy, I mean its just as fcktardered, they are complaining about homosexuals more because they can’t "take it" like the rest of us and are whiny lil oldmen, and because they are men they are more apt to ignore the lesbian stuff because they are hateful and foolish moralists.

Ah clanisim  their outsiders we can pick on them because they are not us… I hate to go PC nazi because I loath PC nazis…even tho I don’t like self much…but really… this is defamation and discrimination of a normal segment of society…. if yuo want to pick on "the issue" take them to task with the lude parades and personal behavior something tangible not what gender they take to bad…anyone to not see the diffrace is working for Satan more than anything else…

Oh and heres a thought if you do not like how I think, act or post be an adult and ignore me don’t be a child and whine and complain and tell me what to do, you are better than that.

actually, nowhere in their bible does it say that all men are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights. In fact, it says the opposite: that all men are slaves, down to the very thought, to the obedience of Christ.

The fact that the Timothy Plan is based in America is a great big example of irony.

that’s right, God, fucknuts; endowed BY THEIR CREATOR.

you have no right to take away the rights of others, gay people are second class citizens thanks to you assholes.

While I am not gay, I am an American and I understand these core beliefs more than you ever will; don’t like it?  well then move to Iran you fascist cockmongers.

Christians shouldn’t take the english bible too literally. It’s actually poorly translated in some areas, and the choice of words are for art sake, which leads to many interpretations.

I heard the the original Bible doesn’t say that being gay is a sin. It actually said something about prostitution. Even in the english version, if you look at the paragraphs before and after, it was all about having sex for greedy pleasure, and not for love, which homosexuality doesn’t fall under.

Blasphemy.  Yet one more reason why I think "devout" Christians can go to hell.  Their unwarranted hatred of gays (seriously, who cares?) and fear of anything remotely sexual is completely out-of-place in a supposedly civilized culture.

Lol, if that guy thought army of two (hey, i liked it, shut up) was homo-erotic, he would be very shocked if he ever saw our military. those guys are very close, going through the fire together brings about bonds that only brothers in arms (lol video game reference) can understand. i suppose to a closet-case like him, any type of bond between men is gay.

    bizarre? I’ll say….

Geez.. that game (sucked) was probably as anti gay as game characters could possibly be iirc. Totally OTT ‘super beefcake commando’ type characters with about as much emotional depth as a sausage.

They were deeply in the closet – so they would pretend (even to themselves) that they were ‘real’ men.  It’s the same with GoW and GoW2 – all those characters are so deeply ensconced in that closet that they have to talk in really gruff voices, work out all the time and whack each other on the back really hard in order to get those touches that they need of another guy’s bod.

    State says:

If the group want to talk about perceived homo-eroticism then perhaps they should read their own book, The Bible it’s full it.

Male homosexuality is nothing to be worried about it games because it rarely exists, due to the fact that it is likely to upset all the teenage boys that play the games and could affect profits. Female homosexuality exists merely as titillation and is a big marketing tool likely to pull in quite a few adolescent males. Taking a sample of the reponses to the article prove these points.

I would have to say that sexual content in games (such as GTA4) is fairly mild compared to what can be seen in similar rated films. The sexual content in GTA4 is nowhere near the strength seen in a film such as Basic Instinct for instance, and the fact that some porn films receive R ratings shows the amount of content that is allowed in films when compared to that in games.
