Conservative Author Blames Video Games for Wildlife “Thrill Kills”

Critics have blamed violent video games for a number of egregious behaviors over the years, from school shootings to attacks on homeless people to garden variety aggressiveness.

But an article on the American Spectator posits a new – and baffling – theory of game blame. Writing for the conservative website, author Bill Croke blames violent game fans for the illegal slaughtering of animals.

By way of makinghis case, Croke mentions a couple of research studies linking violent games to negative behavior and, in an impressive leap of faith, draws a link between games and the wanton killing of wildlife:

It’s a sickeningly familiar story. Two moose shot and left to rot… Two yearling grizzly bears killed… An increasing wasted antelope body count… Senselessly murdered mule deer left on the ground… All this has nothing to do with the legal autumn hunting seasons… it’s "thrill killing," as wildlife managers call it… It’s actually a national problem.

According to studies extant, these wildlife atrocities are committed mostly by young men aged 15 to 22, the video game generation. Much has been written about the nihilistic violence that kids are exposed to when they play some of these games…

I think it might be an easy jump to get up from a computer game, go out and pull the trigger on an elk or a deer, and then walk away with a laugh. After all, it’s only a game… Yet, I think our four-legged friends will get a break soon, as the video game-thrill killing trend graduates to a higher plane: human beings.

Video games are mindless, as are the parents who let their kids play them.

UPDATE: Following up on GP’s coverage, What They Play made a call to the Salmon, Idaho Public Library (Croke mentions watching teens play shoot-em-up games there in a portion of his column not cited by GP):

Interestingly, a call to the Salmon, Idaho Public Library revealed that they do not, in fact, carry video games which obviously casts some doubt over how thorough Croke has really been in his "research" for this piece. "We do not carry games, just books, DVDs, CDs, and books on tape," said the nice lady who answered the phone.

To be fair, Palin is a legal game hunter.  ‘Thrill Killing’ is illegal and not associated with actual hunting.

I did more research also.  I found something more intresting.

All communist countrys-Command & Conquer red alert series.  I found out Vladimir Lenin was an avid fans of Command & Conquer.  Same thing for Mao Zedong, Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Il, Ho Chi Minh, and Pol Pot.  they all loved command & Conquer Red Alert.  I heard they try to build their own tanks and Airship resembling the one in the game.

Genghis Khan-Starcraft, Command & Conquer, Ages of Empire.  I found out that Khan wasn’t a good leader from the beginning until those video games made him a leader.  It was found at Mongolia a fossilized video game software and old computer.

Ted bundy, Ed Gein, Charles Manson, Zodiac Killer, Green River Killer-Manhunt.  I was reading criminal laws textbook and I study serial killers.  the way these killers killed their victim was very much like the one in Manhunt 1 and 2.  The Green river Killer was thought to resemble James Earl Cash from the first game.  For the Zodiac Killer, Arthur Leigh Allen (the alleged killer) resembles Daniel Lamb from the second game and reported to play the game.  Charles Manson was reported to play that game every night and he alleged that he was the character and he sees everybody looking like people from the game and said "they’re out to get me."

The Palestine-Israel conflict-blame it on Bladestorm: the 100 year wars and Counterstrike.  The Palestinian played the british side too much while the Israelis played the french sides in the game.  Suddenly, they all started to become like the real British and French and attack one another. They also were playing Counterstrike, when one of them lose, they will commit suicide bombing thinking this is a video game to them.  Oh to add that, I also blame textbooks teaching about the hundred years war because they’re making palestinian and Israelis thinking they’re the British and French.

the hundred years war and the second hundred years war (1689-1815)-CounterStrike, Team Fortress 2, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and Battlefield: Bad Company and Modern Combats, Tom Clancy’s Endwar, Ghost Recon, and Rainbow Six

the British and the French play too much of those games and they started to think the world around them is a video game.  I heard before Oppenheimer and Einstein before they developed nuclear weapon, Britain and France were developing them also during the second hundred years. but failed to find the right materials.  I heard France was going to reenact the nuclear bomb scene in COD 4 and put it in London.  two of the country had their special forces.  The British had Phantom Scout (a British special forces created from Ghost Recon), and the French had 10-man team based on Rainbow Six.

That’s enough evidence to prove that game was behind our history’s greatest troubles.

Yeah, sure, Brain Training or Myst or the latest Super Mario are mindless, as are the parents who let their kids play them.

Btw, speaking about "thrill killings", what about the numerous bloodsports involving animals through the centuries : even before dogfighting (hello Michael Vick !), there were Roman Circus, cockfighting, bull and bear baiting, etc… All these leisures were very popular among aristocrats until the 19th century. And horse fights are still practiced in China.

You know, BEEF. Cows, for an example are raised in capitivity untill the right age then are slaughthered and they become, hamburgers, steak, etc. They have no chances of survival, Even if one got out, either by accident, or PETA helps it, it will still die becuase, it has no idea how to survive in the wild.

    Okay, that makes perfect sense.

It’s a "well-established fact" that video games = massive, psychotic genocide/homocide.  Don’t believe me?  Here’s a list of well-known historical figures and the games they played.

Hitler – Lemmings.  He liked to make them all fall into the lava pit.

Stalin – Starcraft.  He only expanded the USSR because he wanted to see the whole map and couldn’t figure out how to turn off the fog of war.  While an avid player, he sucked at resource management.  Always went straight for nukes.

Jeffrey Dahmer – Cooking Mama.  Originally played it in Japanese.  Mistransled "beef" with "human".

Jack the Ripper – Trauma Center.  He thought he could put them back together afterwards.

Vlad the Impaler – Bejeweled.  It was rather impressive how he was able to group up so many Turks based on the color of their clothing.

Napoleon – Shadow of the Colossus.  Made him believe that even small men can change the world.

Caligula – Newgrounds Flash games.  Have you ever been to that site?  The crap on there would F you up too.

The Vikings – World of Warcraft.  They were just emulating the raids they did against Crossroads.  Evidence supports this by the following message that was found burned into the side of a monestary; "Lulz!!  We r in ur church, pillaging ur treasure.  U wish u were l33t like us, n00bs!!1!"

Can’t you see that the evidence is plain as day?  Plain as day!!!!

    1. Take problem that has been happening for at least 100 years, like trophy hunting, joy riding, or robbing taxi drivers.

    2. Cite a study which claims that this is done by young people, violent people, or socialy maladjusted people. Don’t worry if you can’t find one. You can make one up or cite one on the price of eggs, no one important ever pulls references.

    3. Point out that either the aforementioned group play video games, or that video games can turn people into them.

    4. Claim that video games are the definitive primary cause of the problem. Ignore any questions about such logic. If questions continue, reference your study (don’t give details on study). If questions still continue, claim they are part of "teh conspiracy".

Well, firstly, this guy is (probably) citing a correlation study. As such, the study itself may be as much proof as we can get before actually confirming it with experiments (like smoking causes cancer; correlations say yes, but no experiments can be done to difinitively prove it), or it can be a long series of indirect influences (I believe on such correlation study such as this was that in areas where there were free abortion clinics, crime was lower). Correlation strudies are done to show links, that’s it. A is linked to B. However, it’s a matter of whether A causes B, or A can cause C, which can cause D, which can cause B.

I also love his bridging between the two. Because, you know, there’s an obvious link between video games and thrill killing. And, of course, it’s one of the worst crimes you can commit out there, in direct opposite to wanting polar bears off the endangered animals list so you can drill for oil.

    In all seriousness, it is a waste, but still… This isn’t A + B= C.

Back when I learned to hunt (deer, squirrels), the only games I had played where Atari generation games like Pac Man and Centipede, then Super Mario, King’s Quest, and maybe Final Fantasy.  None of those games taught me how to enjoy hunting, which is essentially just killing animals for the thrill of it.  I mean, I’m not poor, most hunters aren’t.  If we wanted to, we could go buy a package of hamburger.  But there’s something powerful about going out, sneaking up on a skittish animal, and killing it yourself for food.

Killing animals merely for the "sport" of it, and leaving the carcass there, is definitely wrong.  But it derives the same sense of excitement that legitimate hunting does.  It’s also a bit morally bankrupt to kill animals without thought of maintaining their populations (all hunting in the US is only legal when it is within the bounds of keeping rampant animal populations down to a "safe" level for both the animals and humans), so killing bear yearlings is just sick.  But then, people have been doing this since before video games existed.  The "problem" is a part of humanity itself.  Let’s face it, as a group, we’re all a bunch of assholes.

Okay so we’ll just change the title to Author Conservative Blames Video Games for Wildlife "Thrill Kill"

jeez, firstly it’s a blog Dennis can write whatever he wants, secondly being a Democrat is irrelevant to the story, it was far more important to mention that he tried to pass anti-game legislation.

Personally, I think Bill Croke and his story are a waste.

However, Blago wasn’t labeled a Democrat anywhere in the story about him and he is in so much Federal Poo it ain’t funny. Strangely, the first word in the title about a guy that simply wrote a stupid article is, "Conservative."

OH common now, as the author of the article and every game critic knows:

    1. The earth is only 7 thousand years old

    2. Adam got thrown out of heaven for playing vidja games

    3. God put dinosaur bones into the ground to test our faith…

Turok is just propagating the video game lobbies’ myth that Dinosaurs and Native Americans existed at some point. They clearly didn’t.

By the way, I hope to god that people realize the above ‘facts’ are NOT TRUE…

See this is what happen when writers takes ellicit drugs.  Boom, you get these kind of bullshit logics.  See I’m in EN102 in my college class and we learn about arguments and how to detect fallancies.  I talk to my English teachers if a writers like this person could be on drugs, she told me there were several scenarios where there are fallancies like this.  This logics this person wrote doesn’t make sense.

What did we learn from this bullcrap writings.

illicit Drugs + writers=fallancies with bullshit logics.

Remember, don’t ever let a writers mix up with drugs, they can create this stupid essays with too many fallancies.

I blame Turok for the cause of Dinosaur extinctions.  It was proven that caveman and Dinosaurs did live together in one time.  The caveman played too much Turok and now all the Dinosaurs were mysteriously dissapearing and they became extinct.  The metorites and volcano theories were from before the Dinosaurs, the precambian extinction was caused by those natural events or did they?

So no one ever killed animals just to kill them before video games? No one ever illegally hunted before? Bollocks.

Are we blaming GTA for this, or would this be the fault of games like "Cabela’s Dangerous Hunts"?

Dismissing all video games as mindless shows the author’s true ignorance of the subject.

    Not only that:

when historians tried to find out why John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln and help the confederacy try to take over DC after the Civil War.  It was found that Booth played too much Metal Gear Solid, Splinter Cell, Gears of War, Uncharted; Drake’s Fortune, and Quantum of Solace.  Here’s the proof:

-They found copies of those game at his old houses.

-The way he past the guard, he kept taking cover behind the wall, zig zagging to one wall to another just like how 007 did it in Qunatum of Solace.  Also he knocked down several guards in the same way Solid Snake, Sam Fisher, and 007 from Quantum of Solace.  He took down a guard by breaking one leg and snap the guard neck.  Another guard was knockdown by getting push out of the balcony just before he reached Lincoln’s booth.

-When Booth escaped, he took down guards by pulling off a takedown very much like the one in Quantum of Solace.

-When he try to get to get from windows to windows, it was very much similar to the one in Quantum of Solace.

-Booth was carrying both a gun and a knife, like Snake did.

-Booth was wearing a NVG much like Sam Fisher did.

-Booth always use shadow to hide from guards.

And yes, all wars throughout history were caused by video games.  It’s a well-established fact that Hitler was a DDR junkie.  And all of those Crusades the Catholic church started in the Middle Ages?

Starcraft.  It was all Starcraft’s fault.

This guy must have never dealt with Wildlife Rangers because this has been going on since I was little (and I guess Im the game generation).  In fact one Wildlife Ranger showed some fellow students and I a dummy target they use to trap jerks that like to just take pot shots at animals off the side of roads … but as we all know video games cause all the problems in the world I mean Vietnam caused by video games, WWI caused by video games, hell the Great Wall of China was built because of the threat of roaming video game players.

Much has been written about the nihilistic violence that kids are exposed to when they play some of these games… Yet, I think our four-legged friends will get a break soon, as the video game-thrill killing trend graduates to a higher plane: human beings.

Remind me why the game players are the "nihilstic" ones again, you seem to downright look forward to the thought of people being killed to support your self-concocted theory.

what? just what.. this is baffling. there are barely any games i can recall, that teach you to randomly get up, go out, and shoot animals, and then walk way laughing….

And if there where.. um.. how exactly would that be particularly fun? Wouldnt it get dull repetitive and boring after ooh i dont know.. once?

The main problem with this logic is that all animals would be extinct if that were the case. The other problem is that the video game generation is the 30s+ group now. :/ It doesn’t matter what their parents allow, they aren’t liable to care for their 30 year old  children.
