Despite his lawyer's claim that a supposed addiction to Halo 3 turned Daniel Petric into a killer, an Ohio judge has found the 17-year-old guilty in the 2007 slaying of his mother and wounding of his father.
As GamePolitics reported during Petric's December trial, the young man ambushed his parents after they confiscated his copy of Halo 3. After shooting both, the troubled boy tried to frame his father by placing the gun in his hand.
The Associated Press is reporting this morning that Lorain County Common Pleas Judge James Burge said that video game addiction was not a defense. The judge also noted that there was evidence of premeditation on Petric's part.
Petric could be sentenced to life without parole.

Good, glad to see that there are still some people with commen sense out there whenit comes to video games.
Definitely a victory on our part! This could mean the beginning of the end for the "Video Game Defense!"
There will probably never be an end to this sort of a defense being tried, but it will serve as another case to add to the mountain of precedent to prevent such a defense from ever succeeding.
"After shooting both, the troubled boy tried to frame his father by placing the gun in his hand."
That's definitely not in Halo or GTA...
I don't think there ever was a beginning to the "vidja games made me do it" defense... I've never heard of a single case where it wasn't laughed at, and tossed out on it's butt.
seconded, I was going to shit a brick if this guy got away with 'the video game made me do it' defense... that is like saying, 'god told me to do it' defense, but at least with that the person can plead insanity instead of just trying to use a scapegoat...

Yeah, you and me both cause that would've just opened up more problems for us game players if he did manage to get away with it.
Delicious, delicious, delicious precedent. Mmmmmm.... Precedent.
Good on the judge. Somehow I think a game where you, in a fantasy universe, play a soldier in a power suit who is trying to save humanity, by fighting aliens...doesn't quite make you into a homocidal killer. I mean this guy was sick to begin with. Obviously it was very much premeditated, to the extent of trying to place the gun in his fathers hands. Hope this psycho gets his due for the sentence...
Well, someone can smell BS at last.
Hunting the shadows of the troubled dreams.
I think we've been super lucky with court rulings. Not one account I remember that a video game bill or defense has ever passed with the judge. I worry though, it's only a matter of time till someone slips up.
I wouldn't say we've been super lucky. That implies that our opponents truly had a chance in the first place.

Who didn't see this coming...besides a certain disbarred lawyer?
Haha, foolish lawyer. You have to cite GTA to be taken seriously, not Halo.

Then we must petition to have one put in immediately!

Good news all-round... I can't imagine the fallout if any judge actually allows this defense, can you imagine what that would mean?
Lot's of media coverage, And tougher legislation thanks to the BS of a kid who looks like he hasnt seen the sun and years, and possibly could be the "evil" twin borther of jimmy hopkins.
It's all over except for the temper tantrums.
Now, what about the police officer's kid who shot the sheriff's deputy that wanted to get off scott free or have a lesser sentence because he played a violent video game?

Ah, I'm glad to see that there's still a wee bit of sense left in this fucked up world. I often wonder about people who think that this defense is viable. I mean, at what point is there any sort of personal responsibility? Where would it even begin?
The Judge destroyed any credibilty that a "video game defense" might have had just by saying that it wasn't a defense.
It's heartening to know that there's still intelligence in America.

True the majority of the government (not just the US government but state governments as well) is fucking retarded, but that does not mean the majority of the population is equally retarded. IMO, corruption is sapping their smartness out of them and replacing it with lust for wealth.
Again...

Thats enough out of you, you Yes-man. You have the opinion others give you, as you have yet to present a single unique, thought-provoking idea. All you do is come in behind everyone else, find something that everyone else is agreeing with and jump on the bandwagon. You're the worst kind of useless.
Yeah Shadow D. Darkman you are just a Yes-man.You have the opinion others give you, as you have yet to present a single unique, thought-provoking idea. All you do is come in behind everyone else, find something that everyone else is agreeing with and jump on the bandwagon. You're the worst kind of useless. So take that unique and original post that no one before me has said.
With the exception of Native Americans and Mexicans, the United States was founded by imigrants. Hence, there are stupid people around the world.
Judge James Burge, I thank you for restoring some of my faith in the United States legal system.

Will you lose said faith if Proposition 8 passes?
Are you talking about CA's Prop 8? It already passed.

Not through the courts. Not yet anyways.
Some clarification would have been useful though, sorry.
Why is it that the US court system doesn't see these bills as complete violations of the rights of citizens? These miraculous truths only seem to appear in appeals court. Something is fundamentally wrong here...

Because the politicians owe too many favors to too many people. Most of them either Big Buisness or the "We're Christians and we're being persecuted!" gallery.
(I know that not all Christians are like this so no flameing please, but as long as one of the questions that get asked when someone is up for election is "What church does he go to? Does he believe like we do?" etc... We're gonna have people being like that.)

Not all of us are. See my reply above. Most of us *facepalm* at the fucked up shit these people are doing. We do it because we are capable of perceiving just how stupid they are, but are unable to put it in words.

Facepalm is not a fucking verb: stop butching my language.
The English language is one that rapes and pillages vocabulary and grammar at it's whim. It then proceeds to perform cruel, inhumane experiments upon it's ill-gotten gains before butchering them for consumption.
The words face and palm being stitched together and beaten until they perform as a verb is merely it's latest experiment.

Yes I have and I would like to say, this thread has nothing to do with Proposition 8, regardless of my personnal investments if it comes into law.
Two, I love John C Reilly.
Holy shit, common sense prevails...
I could hug that judge.
Daniel's attorney presented the "video game addiction" defense then failed to present a single witness or expert to bolster his case. Of course the judge convicted Daniel, as well he should. This was clearly an act of pre-meditated murder.
On behalf of recovering gaming addicts everywhere, I say send this young man away for a very, very long time.
What did Daniel think he was going to do? Kill both of his parents, set it up to look like a murder- suicide, attend a funeral as the teary-eyed orphan then start gaming again like a maniac? There's something missing in his logic.
Do I think this kid is game addict? Absolutely. Is he a cold blooded killer? Absolutely.
He killed his mother and fled the scene on foot. Did he pack a bag? No, but he grabbed his beloved copy of Halo. His lawyer had opportunities introduce an insanity plea and present a cogent defense but failed on both counts, perhaps because neither would have helped Daniel very much. This boy made a conscious decision to put his game play ahead of the lives of his parents.

Do I think this kid is game addict? Absolutely. Is he a cold blooded killer? Absolutely.
by your flawed logic, the following line is true:
were you a game addict? Absolutely. were you a cold blooded killer? Absolutely.
岩「…Where do masochists go when they die?」
Do you just randomly attach yourself to things and whore yourself for attention, or is there some sort of cycle?
How does gaming 'addiction' factor in here? This seems much more like a child suffering from Cabin Fever. He was bored, he became hostile and aggressive with the only people he saw on a regular basis. You want to blame it on gaming addiction because you, a man with no self-control, need that validation. In other words, learn some self-restraint and shut the hell up, you're only helping to create conditions that will lead to this assinine defense being taken seriously.
People get away with murder by claiming they were sleep walking through all of it. Why would video games be that more of a stretch. Take your own advice: "whore yourself".
That is all.
There have been cases like this all over the world...are you saying that Homicidal somnambulism doesn't exist?
Actually, it's quite obvious why he had the game and not a bag. Game and gun were in the same place, and his sister stumbled upon the scene later on, after which he ran. No time to grab a bag then, but the game he already had with him would of course still be with him. So that fact hardly matters.
"I firmly believe that Daniel Petric had no idea at the time he hatched this plot that if he killed his parents they would be dead forever," Lorain County Common Pleas Judge James Burge said.
... Nope, Judge still is a moron. No way a 17-year old will not know that his parents will be dead forever. I mean, religious upbringing? You KNOW they 'go to heaven'. (And you don't 'cause you killed one!)
And the dad forgave his son. >_>
Is it odd that I read about this at Foxnews.com before here, and their coverage was pretty good?
