Full Frontal in GTA IV Lost & Damned

When I ponder the things that I’d like to see in video games someday, a fully nekkid Congressman is not high on the list.

Nonetheless, Kotaku reports that a cut scene in GTA IV: The Lost and Damned, scheduled to release tomorrow, features a male character displayed with full frontal nudity:

[Congressman] Stubbs, in his first meeting with lead character Johnny Klebbitz, is receiving a massage at the private gentleman’s club Jousters when we meet him. The Congressman, dressed in nothing but a towel, quickly becomes pretty comfortable with his new biker friend, choosing to deliver his monologue in the buff…

The ESRB rating for the game—which is "M" for Mature—does make mention of the gratuitous digital d*ck on display, noting that the game has "Nudity" in its content. The original Grand Theft Auto IV is listed as having only "Partial nudity."

I guess in this case ratings systems are helpful and useful. People should be Mature enough to not let 3 seconds of man junk in their face to ruin their gaming experience. If you were not going to buy this game because you do not like GTA, or if you have a PS3 and are unable to buy the add-on(Like me), then thats perfectly understandable. But please, don’t let 3 seconds of a virtual dick ruin your gaming experience. It’s not going to make you gay, it may make you realize that you’ve been gay your whole life, but thats a completly different topic.

I find it ironic that the adults will claim that little timmy will be corrupted by the mere sight of dick and balls.

Yet at the same time, timmy has lived happily for 13 years with a dick and balls permanantly attached to him.

I mean id be MORE worried if little timmy, aged 13, saw those dick and balls and shouted ‘Oh my god, what the hell is THAT!’

Funny how it is. Here in Canada, I remember the movie Starship Troopers was rated 14A (for Canadian rating that is almost equiv to PG-13, while 18A is R here.). As a teen at the time, it was great to see a ton of nudity and huge violence on the screen.

While if you MENTION violence or any sexually suggested content, you get stamped an instant 18 or M. Sad :(

The fear is that the sight of a penis will be enough to make anyone gay.

This of course will likely be the response if any media types pick it up (likely in America, unlikely elsewhere due other countries’ having sensible attitudes towards sex), and is still surprising that the excuse could still be used as there would be nothing wrong in being gay anyway.

Another likely response would be that from the typical homophobic teenage boy crowd, who themselves would be worried the looking at a penis could be considered gay.

So the download has the potential to lose customers but then again I’m sure that they would’ve been lost when the maturity of GTA4 came along and that the kids expecting childlike humour and dialogue would’ve decided to play a game that was more targeted towards them, something like Saints Row 2.

The last Leisure Suit Larry definately counts as the streaking scene had his little man meat flapping around all over the place.

In the US it was originally rated AO and so was censored and released as an M until an uncensored version was released later, not here in the UK or the rest of Europe though, we just got the Uncut version.

In the UK at least I’m 99.99% certain this will just be marked as an 18 no problem. Some rag of a newspaper like the Daily Mail or the Sun may pick up on it but considering we’ve had films rated 12 with full frontal male nudity (damn you Bob Hoskins!!), any complaint here isn’t likely to get far.

    HarmlessBunny says:

Funny thing though, nudity in video games is not a terribly new thing. I remember back in 95, a little horror series called Phantasmagoria (sp?) featured some female nudity (yes back in the day FMV video with real actors were used…horribly) , various Leisure Suit Larry ganes (Hey it counts! lol), and surprisingly quite a few others over the years. Nudity in this media form is not really a new thing…I just wished a lot of folks would recognize it as a true form of media like T.V, Movies, novels, etc etc.

It took years but now anime/animation in general are now finally being treated as just an alternative form of telling a story and not just for kids. Hopefully video games, other than us gamers, can be recongized by all as this someday. We’ll see how this is treated by the media. Wishful thinking here, but I hope if it is well designed and well made that it is treated as such, and not judged harshly because it wants to be "edgy".

Rockstar has successfully created themselves as the ‘edgy’ company, and its been a productive image for them. I saw the scene at gamevideos if anyone is interested. We’ll look back at this 10 years from now, and remember when seeing a penis in the game was actually a ‘big’ deal (Sorry I couldn’t resist). (Like what Chicago Hope did with ‘shit’)

I was intrigued when I saw a trailer that featured one man threating to shove another man’s face onto the wheel of an upturned motorcycle that was spinning at high speed.

This interested me not because of the promise of violence but because judging by the character’s faces (and GTAIV’s storyline), there was going to be backstory to this and it interested me as to why someone would want/need to threaten to do that to someone.

Now if this was a trailer to manhunt it wouldn’t have peaked my interest too much.

"Clearly another case of ESRB favoritism. Bethesda had to exclude children from oblivion, and make all kids in fallout 3 invincible, half life 2 had to exclude children"

You got a source? If this is true then it’s a damn disgrace.

Kill children and it becomes Ao?

What makes children so special? I always wanted for games to let you kill children because

    A. It would mean pushing the envelope more than movies

    B. It would be a big sign that they don’t care about naysayers

    C.  Tieing into A and B it would overstep another taboo.

    D. Since children are much more fragile than adults it wouldn’t be unrealistic to expect that running over/ shooting a child would lead to more gore and/or blood which would tie into the others and damage the ‘games are only for kids’ myth even more.

Ok so I think killing children in a game would be amusing on some level.

I bought bioshock recently and one of my first instincts after seeing one of the little sisters was to shoot it with my shotgun (I spared the first because someone said it’ll be worth my while). After that didn’t work I harvested it and couldn’t see the process. Damn censors. Now I’m going to try saving one and then shooting it although if the infected girls can survive standing in water I blasted with lightning I’m not sure it’ll let me kill them.

Where was I going with this? Oh yeah. ESRB shouldn’t make killable chidlren an instant Ao. Why because then you’re making a moral decision that it is more inappropriate vs. killing an adult while having the same amount of blood and gore.

I was going to make a point about there being child soldiers in real life but upon reflection I think if you actually had child soldiers as enemies the ESRB wouldn’t mind (plus it kills the whole ‘they’re innocent, pure and of no threat’ vibe).

    hellfire7885 says:

That was never meant to be seen in the first place, and as you said, the mod was third party, meaning the developers of the game itself had no hand in it’s creation whatsoever, which means that mod was in no way protected by the ESRB. The zombie thing however, I do see it’s rating being ramped up for that.

  30. 0
    Wolvenmoon says:

The boob mod that oblivion got hit for was third party DLC, and it still got their rating changed. The ESRB realized they’d screwed up and released a statement basically saying that in light of violent content seen in the game (How they could have missed the zombie in the beginner dungeon is beyond me) they were now rating it M.

Bethesda, compared to EA games, is a small company with only one physical location.

Sometimes I think jack thompson was actually paid by rockstar to make such a ridiculous argument against them that anyone that criticized them was either consciously or subconsciously regarded as like him.

  31. 0
    hellfire7885 says:

The ESRB is independant and Bethesda is not a small company.

I don’t think this is favoritsim, it’s rockstar breaching boundaries other companies are afraid to even consider.

Besides, it’s DLC, no episodic content, meaning it gets the same rating as the main game. Meaning the ESRB again isn’t palying favorites, they are simply following their own rules.

  32. 0
    Wolvenmoon says:

Of course, if any other series dared to be as violent as GTA, where you can murder hookers after screwing them, and displayed full on nudity, it would be given an AO rating.

Clearly another case of ESRB favoritism. Bethesda had to exclude children from oblivion, and make all kids in fallout 3 invincible, half life 2 had to exclude children (originally the reproductive repressive field didn’t exist), and to come back to oblivion-oblivion had a locked file showing breasts (oh no!).

Apparently displaying breasts, killing children, or depicting racism is horrifically wrong by the ESRB if you’re a small company, but if you’re big enough showing dick, racial stereotypes, and murdering hookers after hiring them is fine and dandy M-rated material that can be sold alongside games like unreal tournament, half life 2, oblivion, crysis (FFS, crysis had MILD gore compared to most other games), and others.

I *HATE* double standards in this industry. Down with the ESRB, up with a truly independant ratings system not controlled by the government (As in some european countries) or the major game companies.
