Keith Vaz Moves in Parliament for UK Ban on Rape Game

February 25, 2009

Making good on a vow to bring up Japanese PC title RapeLay in Parliament, British Labour MP Keith Vaz has issued a call for the game to be banned in the U.K., reports the Evening Standard:

Mr Vaz, who campaigns against violent computer games, called on the Government to ban [RapeLay] from sale to UK players over the internet.

In a Commons motion, he said he was "appalled that a video game that simulates rape has been readily available for sale on the internet".

He welcomed the decision by Amazon to withdraw the game.

As GamePolitics reported earlier this month, Vaz was one the first to speak out against RapeLay.

Lol, there are already plenty pictures of Samus doing dirty and sexy things

Well, also, there is that porn actress playing Sarah Palin, and she is not getting sued for promoving rape or dirty thoughts against a public figure. So if an porn actor comes to parody Obama y a porn flick, maybe won´t be sued either.

The problem for this people is the media, not really the sex.

About those 4th grade pictures of teaches falling off a cliff, many people would claim that child have mental health problems for wishing the teacher´s death, even if it´s not true.

Re: Keith Vaz Moves in Parliament for UK Ban on Rape Game

I don't know the legal bits but because Palin and Obama are public figures or something like that people have more license to do stuff like that. Before the election one place was selling John Mccain and Barack Obama action figures and I don't think either man saw a dime of them.

And yes I realize Samus cannot escape rule 34, she's too popular.

I had a school over react to me drawing a picture of a bomb (black circle with a fuse) so perhaps they would go overboard over teacher falling off a cliff but I betcha there's a lot of schools that would just throw out the drawing or give a slap on the wrist and be done with it.

Debates are like merry go rounds. Two people take their positions then they go through the same points over and over and over again. Then when it's over they have the same positions they started in.

In elementary school, I used to draw a lot and my teachers never were very pleased about that. They consider anormal if you don´t do what they say. Plus, I went to a Jehova´s Witness sponsored school, so... it didn´t ended too well.

A small letter to Keith Vaz

BAN THE INTERNETS!!!!!!!!

Seriously though, the whole Rapelay thing is out of control; although it'll be a good distraction to the RE5 controversy. Which I guess is good.

To Keith Vaz:

Are you seriously going to ban one hentai from all of England? The game is probably hard to find on a regular selling website; but as other people have pointed out you can download it. It’s probably not rated by the PEGI (Can games be sold without a rating in Europe?) and it’s not an official game of England so… why are you bothering?

Sincerely,

PushDustIn

Re: A small letter to Keith Vaz

Each European country is different. In England video games (and videos) can not be sold* if they are not rated by the BBFC. I can't find RapeLay on the BBFC search so I'm guessing it has not been rated.

RapeLay might also be caught out by some of the rules that either have been or will soon be implemented regarding cartoon child porn. I have not been following this very closely but I believe the UK is going to introduce something that bans fake kiddy porn and as this game allows the rape of a ten year old girl I think it would be covered by that. If I  have got this right then it is likely that owning any fake kiddy porn (including this game) would lead to jail time and some time on the sex offenders register.

* You can own it.

These guys really need to go to Something Awful and look at their Hentai game reviews.  My guess is that this is just a drop in the hat compared to the weird crap they have in Japan.

Re: Keith Vaz Moves in Parliament for UK Ban on Rape Game

Hmm, wasting tax payer money banning something that isn't sold in that country to begin with.

Ugh, stupid people exist everywhere.

Re: Keith Vaz Moves in Parliament for UK Ban on Rape Game

Heh... someone should send these guys to Japan. With a video camera and easy access to YouTube. I wanna see the heads of overly-prudish politicians explode. I just find it funny that it took one of those games winding up on Amazon for bored politicians to realize that they existed.

Re: Keith Vaz Moves in Parliament for UK Ban on Rape Game

Someone should import one of those 'used school girl panties' dispensers, and install it next to the coke/pepsi machine nearest to parliament.

I hate broccoli/ and think it totally sucks/ Why isn't it meat?

Re: Keith Vaz Moves in Parliament for UK Ban on Rape Game

Cause you know, according to the politicans in the US, the internet is only in the US, and now according to this moron, its only in the UK, Japan, whats that?

Ugh, politicans.

Re: Keith Vaz Moves in Parliament for UK Ban on Rape Game

As far as I know, no UK retailers (online or not) are selling Rapelay so how would such a ban work?    I'm not familiar enough with UK law; is there some way to make the act of purchasing the game illegal?

Re: Keith Vaz Moves in Parliament for UK Ban on Rape Game

Such things are alreayd illegal in the UK.

This ban is the equivlent of the police finding kiddy porn with a redhead in it and then someone trying to ban kiddy porn with redheads, dispite the fact other laws already cover the case.

Re: Keith Vaz Moves in Parliament for UK Ban on Rape Game

Wouldn't this already be covered by the UK's new content laws that shut down bdsm sites?

Being a 'pervert' in the UK is already illegal under the idea that you might commit some horrible crime.  I guess the UK has not come all that far in the last 50 years *moment of silience for Turing*

Re: Keith Vaz Moves in Parliament for UK Ban on Rape Game

Apart from being more liberal than the US, although that isn't exactly a hard thing to do.

Re: Keith Vaz Moves in Parliament for UK Ban on Rape Game

Yes, yes. The US is an ultra-conservative superpower that will come to your house, blow your door down with a tank, take your money, and put the fear of God into you. Then we'll take your country and plant dozens of mega-corporations all around, take the rest of your money, and blow down a few more doors for good measure. Why? Because we're bored and we like to blow shit up.

/sarcasm

Re: Keith Vaz Moves in Parliament for UK Ban on Rape Game

The UK is both more, and less, liberal then the US.  When it comes to social freedoms I would actually put them behind the US and falling further.

Re: Keith Vaz Moves in Parliament for UK Ban on Rape Game

Heh, can't belive a 5 year old game causes so much uproar. Given that it's hard enough to find a site that sells it, on top of the fact that you can Download it from dozens and dozens of torrent sites, well, this seems kinda pointless. I don't condone rape, but at the same time, banning this game is not gonna stop anyone who wants it from getting it.

Pointless, retarded, worthless. If vaz dares to try and blame this on the UK or US game industries, there should be a lawsuit on his ass within minutes.

Re: Keith Vaz Moves in Parliament for UK Ban on Rape Game

Ah but it's more pointless than that even, the game doesn't have a BBFC rating and therefore can't be sold in the UK anyway. It's as banned as it can effectively get.

Unless the government trys to close down the internet, there's nothing more to be done.

Gift.

Well it gives them a chance to make it look like they're doing something important while they kick back and rake in the taxpayer money, so wouldn't you do the same? :P
