Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve of Rampage

March 15, 2009 -

Earlier this week it was reported that 17-year-old German rampage shooter Tim Kretschmer was a fan of the first-person shooter Counter-Strike. In the past, video game violence critics have sought to link Counter-Strike to school shootings in both Europe and the United States.

New reports suggest that Kretschmer played another popular FPS, Far Cry 2, on the night before he killed 15 people and himself. In the U.K., the Times reports:

The teenage gunman spent the night before his spree playing a violent video game in which a heavily armed mercenary tracks down and kills an arms dealer, police revealed yesterday... Tim Kretschmer spent from 7.30pm to 9.40pm playing Far Cry 2, in which the player takes on the role of the killer.

Remarkable parallels emerged between the video game and the 17-year-old’s rampage. In the game it is essential to hijack cars to move around. Kretschmer hijacked a car... Characters in the game, which is made by the French company Ubisoft... wear black camouflage uniforms – the clothing Kretschmer wore on Wednesday.

Most sinister of all, Far Cry 2’s killer uses a Beretta 92 handgun, the weapon fired 112 times by Kretschmer [GP: Actually, the player controls a number of different weapons in the game]. The game... includes sequences in which the aiming, firing and reloading of a Beretta are portrayed in vivid detail. It also rewards players who shoot their victims in the head, the style of killing chosen by Kretschmer.

The Times quotes video game critic Lieutenant-Colonel Dave Grossman on the supposed influence of violent shooting games:

You can see their influence in the way these school shooters aim and shoot accurately and move from one target to the next, moving through people dispassionately.

But Walter Hollstein, a sociologist with the Council of Europe, disagreed:

It’s nonsense to assume they turn adolescents into school shooters. A variety of factors, such as helplessness, anger and loss of control, must come together for them to become the trigger, but the games themselves don’t make anyone a killer.

In additional news related to Kretschmer's rampage, Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for a tightening of Germany's gun laws.

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve of

Makes me glad none of them do research on anything, otherwise they'd know video games had been around at least that long. They'd argue yes because only schools had machiens capable of playing them x.x

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve of

I firmly believe that people who blame school shootings on video games don't want to face the real causes of the perp's actions. It's just easier to scapegoat than try to fix what's actually wrong.

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve of

THANK YOU! Iv been waiting for someone to say that!

Lol I wrote that in my essay about how the media uses video games as a scapegoat.

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve ...

"You can see their influence in the way these school shooters aim and shoot accurately and move from one target to the next, moving through people dispassionately."

Someone who has spiraled so far as to resort to a school shooting isn't going to stop and mourn every person they've killed. Additionally, if you've just killed someone for the first time I'd imagine there would be a strong reaction, but the weight of your actions would probably lead you to think something like, "There's no going back now". Then again, common sense and reasoning don't really apply to the mentally ill. The guy was sick in the head and Grossman needs to stop pretending to be an expert on kids picking up guns.

I still can't believe that we've dredged up the "Games teach kids how to shoot guns!" BS again, either. Holding a controller and pressing a button is quite far removed from the weight, kick-back, and sound of an actual gun. The thing is, guns aren't that complex to use. In fact, they're made to be used quickly and easily by just about anyone. Hell, if he had access to the internet, a quick google search is all it takes to find information on Gun operation and maintenance.

Well, I guess that just about does it for videogames in Germany.  Next stop, United Kingdom...

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve ...

Have they raided CryTek again yet?

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve ...

I doubt they did. When they did last time, GP reported on it.

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve ...

or they could send GSG-9 (German counterterrorist squad) to Ubisoft in France and Ubisoft Montreal to take down that "murder simulator" studio.  Crytek could be raided anytime soon.

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve of

First it was counter-strike, now far cry 2? if your gonna blame a video game atlease pick a game to blame instead of passing it onto another.

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve of

He most likely mentions Far Cry 2 because CryTek is a German company and as such hits closer to home, he probably hopes to either provoke CryTek or he intends to pursuade the parents to sue them for damages.
It's not as if he has any conclusive proof.

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve of

CryTek didn;t do Far Cry 2, that was all Ubsoft doing.

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve of

The only relation between the two games are the engines they're made from- Far Cry 2 is made from a Ubisoft-made engine that's like a distant relative from the original CryEngine. The previous Far Cry game had more CryEngine "pedigree" so to speak

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve of

Why do these newspapers never advertise where the guy got the gun?

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve of

Because it's not important how he obtained the weapon, it's the video game he trained on. [/mediathought]

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve ...

Let's not forget the astonishing numbers of black camouflage uniforms and black combat suits teenagers possess since the press redefined the terms to mean "anything black". Because that's what the guy wore to the shooting - normal black pants and a black shirt.

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve ...

Grossman's major campaign ACTUALLY is all about how rail-shooters (to him, the same genre as FPS) are calibrated properly to teach children marksmanship. Watch him try to prove FC2 taught this guy how to shoot.

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve of

In Far Cry 2 it's also essential to walk and run. The same thing Kretschmer did!

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve ...

' The game... includes sequences in which the aiming, firing and reloading of a Beretta are portrayed in vivid detail. It also rewards players who shoot their victims in the head, the style of killing chosen by Kretschmer.'

oh please...

your saying he learned to aim, fire and reload a Beretta from watching far cry animations?.

Please. Theres not too many ways to reload a pistol. Clue.. you dont jam the bullets in the end one by one, pour in gunpowder and use a rag on a astick to cram it down, then light the fuse and fire it like an imperial cannon.

Rewarding players for shooting in the head? REALLY? first ive heard.

And aiming... wha.. again clue, you dont point the end the bullets come out of at yourself. GEEZ.

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve ...

Wait, since when was aiming at the head a STYLE of shooting?  I thought gun-kata was a style of shooting, not AIMING THE GUN ITSELF.

"HEY! LISTEN!"

"HEY! LISTEN!"

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve ...

Well, technically it's rewarded to shoot a person in the head cause you save ammo/kill the guy faster

Though i find in games like far cry where there is no stealth function...it's usually ends up just being spray and pray.

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve ...

Far cry 2 is very stealthable, I played a good chunk of the game with a silenced pistol, silenced smg and a dart gun, molotoves where also a very hand distraction.

later I did opt for more daka with a dragonuv/assault rifle, RPG and uzi but I just loved the flexibility in play style (flare gun/flamethrower is a fun combo as well though slightly redundant)

notice how I still haven't gone on a suicidal killing spree as well.

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve ...

At one point in the game, I unlocked a safehouse by sneaking up on 2 guys with the machete and sometimes shoot exploding barrels for a surprise attack.

Ditto on not turning into a psychopath as well.

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve ...

Yeah, stealth is hugely important. On all but the hardest difficulty, you can play it like any other run an gun, but as soon as you kick up the difficulty to infamous, it becomes a completely different game.

Re: Report: German School Shooter Played Far Cry 2 on Eve ...

yeah i thought about that too.. that is all he can mean... (unless hes thinking there IS an ACTUAL 'reward' system in teh game for ehadshots , probably thinks 'points' or something).

The think is.. thats not the game rewarding players tho..

Thats just the game accurately modelling the fact that a bullet to your brain is more dangerous than one to your little finger.
