Bavaria's Interior Minister Likens Violent Games to Drugs, Kiddie Porn

April 3, 2009 -

In the aftermath of last month's horrific school shooting rampage in Winnenden, criticism of violent video games by German government officials has been on the rise.

In the latest political attack, Bavarian Minister of the Interior Joachim Herrmann (left), a frequent critic of violent games, upped the ante by likening such games to illegal drugs and child pornography.

Herrmann made the charge in a Tuesday press release (Google translation) which was issued to coincide with the government-sponsored German Games Award as well as a video game conference in Munich.

German GamePolitics reader David Ziegler provides this translation:

The statement contains the usual accusations that "such games are one of the causes for youth violence and also for school shootings, where images from killer games become reality",and that "more and more children are getting mired in this virtual world of violence", so that "they have no time left for school or job training,  and are lost to our society".

However, this time, he's taking it a bit further. The last sentence states: "In regards to their harmful effects, [violent video games] are on the same level as child pornography and illegal drugs, the ban on which rightly is unquestioned"

However, a second German official, Commissioner for the New Media Thomas Jarzombek, criticized Herrmann's remarks:

The comparison is completely inappropriate... anyone making such statements is unqualified to participate in any further debate [regarding the] protection of minors from harmful media.

GamePolitics reader tibuka, also German, adds:

[Herrmann's] statement was released on the same day as the first German Videogame Awards ceremony took place in Munich. In return, all important German game-associations (G.A.M.E., BIU, ESB) released statments of their own, demanding an apology.

Re: Bavaria's Interior Minister Likens Violent Games to ...

I completely agree that playing violent games and video games makes your evil side surface and it can easily lead to teen soft porn in such a case substance abuse help is usually needed. Drug abuse usually happens when a person takes a drug for reasons that are non-medical or non-therapeutic. More often than not, the normal use of these drugs are for performance enhancement, or they are used to alter brain function. Both of these types of drugs, despite having some form of negative connotation attached to their use, actually have some benefits to offer when used accordingly – which is why they are often prescribed. That being said, drug abuse normally happens when a person decides to take said drugs long after they are needed, or take them in amounts that are harmful and are beyond the prescription limit.

Re: Bavaria's Interior Minister Likens Violent Games to Drugs,

Hitler never played any video games.
Kids in Afghnistan who shoot AKs everyday, don't even know what a video game is.
Ask anyone in a state prision if he/she will blame their thug life on a video game.
If video games made people want to kill, I should be #1 in America's Most Wanted list right now.

This is what happens when idiots who don't know anyhting about games, decide to blame something for a problem they lost control of.

Oh you can find people questioning the ban on drugs you out of touch fool.

Anyway the people who want a lot more liberties don't question the ban on child porn not because they think it's disgusting but because it physically and psychologically harms children. And you cannot have child pornograpghy without doing this to children. Kids are not harmed in the making of games and it's possible to have violent games that kids don't get a hold of.

Why do I even need to explain this to them.

Oh well they're getting desperate and crazy.

What beer brand?  I've never heard of a 'Bavaria' brand of beer.

Re: Bavaria's Interior Minister Likens Violent Games to Drugs,

I love it when someone compares two things like video games and drugs/child pornagraphy and has no idea about either of them.  Until he actually sits down and plays those games, anything that comes out of his mouth is bullshit!

Sortableturnip's Law: As an online discussion of video game violence grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Jack Thompson approaches 1

Re: Bavaria's Interior Minister Likens Violent Games to Drugs,

Not all the anti-game critics are old and stupid.  Some are just young and stupid.

Re: Bavaria's Interior Minister Likens Violent Games to Drugs,

Dear non-Germans never forget: 2009 is an election year over here!

Our right-wing conservatives of the CDU/CSU-party desperately need a topic they can scapegoat to death. Why? Well, because they are the ones responsible for the social problems regarding young people in the first place!

You won't hear a word from those very same people when it comes to stricter gun laws or more controls regarding gun clubs. Those are considered good voters.

And the very same party that now blasts all video games as "killergames" has absolutely no problem at all to worship the former Nazi soldiers of the "Gebirgstruppen" once a year at Mittenwald!

ZAR.

When someone says something like this, I wouldn't recommend asking for an apology.  Point how out of touch and unqualified to govern they are.  Over and over.  They'll try to apologize and then don't accept it.

People like this sabotage themselves.  Let them.  One example comes to mind...

German gamers should also vote the bastard out of office when he comes up for re-election.

Re: Bavaria's Retard Interior Minister Likens "Violent" ...

Problem being he's a member of the Bavarian government, so he is not elected directly (but the government itself is). The Bavarian parliament (legislative) chooses a head of government (executive), the head of government then chooses the interior minister.

And the government in Bavaria will, sadly, be CSU-dominated for the next 100 years (just like it was since the conception of the Federal Republic of Germany).

He will not be voted out of office by the populace, the only chance to get rid of him is to pressure the Bavarian minister-president (the head of the bavarian executive).

Well at least he got spanked by gaming organizations the same day he made the statement. That's more than usually happens in the US.
