Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over E-mail Flap

In our previous story GamePolitics broke the news that Utah Senate President Michael Waddoups (R) threatened to have anti-game activist Jack Thompson prosecuted if Thompson did not stop sending him e-mail.

In a remarkable development, a website run by Utah Senate Republicans has publicly taken Thompson to task over the issue:

Jack Thompson sends a lot of Email.

At 6:00 a.m. on Easter Sunday he sent another Email message to a group of contacts and highlighted a picture that, if not legally pornographic, was certainly offensive.

President Waddoups was on the recipient list. He sent a polite but direct request back to Mr. Thompson:

OK, I’ve had enough. Please remove me from your Email list.

Jack Thompson wrote back:

Sir, did you look at the material being sold to minors in Utah that I sent you?

President Waddoups responded with a second request to be removed:

Yes, I read them all and I got the picture. No more please.

Well . . . a few days went by with no relief. This morning Michael Waddoups – probably a little bugged – sent a third request to be removed from Thompson’s Email list…

I asked you before to remove me from your mailing list. I supported your bill but because of the harassment will not again. If I am not removed I will turn you over to the AG for legal action.

So Jack Thompson issued a press release… Jack Thompson might be right. He might be totally, completely, dead-on right on his video game issue. He might not (smart people can disagree). Either way, this behavior doesn’t help his cause.

GP: It’s not clear who edits the Utah Senate blog, but there is an offer to post the original e-mails if readers request them.

UPDATE: In order to provide some context to this story, in the comments section I’ve posted the (NSFW) GTA IV screenshot that apparently pushed Sen. Waddoups over the edge. It’s clearly not pornographic although it is racy.

UPDATE 2: The Utah Senate Site has posted the series of e-mails between Sen. Waddoups and Thompson.

And even then, he has resorted to fireing off as many bombs as possible to kill everyone before he dies. (In a typical end of level Boss way)

I can tell you, while many of us gamers can only laugh at the pointless antics he keeps doing, there will be many politicians who will want to send this guy to jail now.

Apples and oranges.  Jack isn’t being considered for anything; his legislation is.  Jack could be caught in bed with a goat the day after it’s submitted to the Senate, and that fact wouldn’t actually change the content of the bill he proposed.

Either it was good before they knew he was a nutcase, and now they don’t want to support it for reasons unrelated to its actual content, or it was always bad from the start and they supported it for political reasons despite knowing it was bad, but those reasons are no longer so appealing since they know he’s a nutcase.

  6. 0
    lumi says:

Again, it doesn’t matter if he’s a lunatic, or whether or not they realized he’s a lunatic, if the legislation he came up with was sound.  Wanting to disassociate themselves from him is all well and good, but it still does not have anything to do with the legislature.  They can say, "we want nothing more to do with you because you don’t know how to conduct yourself" and still back a bill that he happened to produce because the bill itself is sound.

Saying they’re dropping support for his bill because they don’t like him is disingenuous or proof of an uninformed decision.  They can choose their poison, but either way, they screwed something up.

As one note (and I know I’m only repeating what’s been said before)…we can all learn from this as well.  E-mailing politicians can be a powerful way to get a message out.  But we must be sure to keep our messages to politicians or others formal, cordial and succinct.  One polite message is fine…a flurry of rants communicates crazy.  Otherwise it is too easy for politicians to paint gamers with the same strokes as JT.

Actually I think there’s some validity to this premise.  I doubt that they’re all of a sudden running out to buy GTA IV for their kids, but I do think they’ve realized that they were bamboozled a bit by a zealot.  That has obviously poured a bucket of ice water on their enthusiasm for this issue, at least temporarily.

I don’t find anything hypocritical per se in Waddoup’s position.  He’s apparently being harrassed by JT and that has led him to rethink his involvement with JT and his issues.  I think that’s reasonable.  Politicians aren’t going to want to be associated with someone who’s clearly a lunatic.

@lumi (sorry, something ran afoul in the "reply" attempt):

That’s an oversimplified take on the matter, I think. Let’s say, por arguendo, that Jack-O was discovered consuming child pornography and criminally charged accordingly. You really think that the Legislature should, under this hypothetical scenario, continue to support legislation drafted by him and which addresses itself to the issue of child pornography? Would you also think that a proposed Cabinet member’s failure to pay income tax shouldn’t be an issue raised during their confirmation process or isn’t a good basis (stated or unstated) to withdraw their nomination or to decline the nomination?

If I remember correctly, Jack’s email shenanigans are what got him into trouble before. Countless people who spoke out agaisnt him received his constant shit-storm of emails and he then criticized them when they spoke out against the inane and moronic things he kept sending.

This is just Jack sticking to what few guns he has left. If he can’t prance around courtrooms and TV news programs, he settles back into mass emailing everyone who has so much as looked at him. He’s just very bad at being a troll, is what it seems like. In real life, he’s quiet, well-spoken, and polite as many of you who have met him have attested to. Once he gets on the internet, he turns into the incendiary jerk-off who created the term pixelante and insists that GTA is sold to minors, though no evidence exists.

I can see Thompson is already losing all the self-control he left, and this series of desperate missives are a proof of this finished career and his character.

Utah somehow could be his last chance to really acomplish something, even if his bill didn´t was passed as law the way he wanted, but again, his own selfishness and arrogance has earned him more enemies, ironically, as the same way he once stated about wishing God to send him more enemies.

Well, at least, in that part he is very succesfull.

He can claim the name of God a thousand times, but nothing will stop his own destruction by his own arrogance. Not God, not Gayle Ruckza (whatever it spells), not even the Supreme Court.

Jack Thompson´s crusade is about to finish. He has no allies and the only ones who could back him up now they just keep quit themselves, hoping that the madman from Miami just dissapears for once and forever. But he won´t be quiet. He is still yelling like the damn child he has always been.

He is a disgrace for his own kind. Not even far right conservatives would be on his side. He is a danger, a menace. An uninstable person who believes his own rights are believes weights even more than the rights of everyone.

What´s next? How long until he commits some kind of crime? A hate crime? Libel? Slander? The part of the mails attacking the senator was hillarious. Thousand of dollars from game industry? LOL

We could give him the benefit of the doubt on playing GTA IV, though given his past track record and the fact that he is willing to lie to a United States Judge, I’m not inclined to.

However, we do know he was running around crowing about all the horrible things that happen in Bully, trying to get it declared a public nusicance, all before the game’s release so we know he never played that before going on that particular crysade. He also threatened Midway after the player-created JT fighter in Mortal Kombat (forgot which one, Armageddeon was it?) without knowing anything about the create-a-fighter tool so I find it hard to believe he played that one too before trying to slap down a lawsuit.

As far as I’m concerened he is either lying because he is a misinformed hypocrite, or he is lying to try and further his own twisted agenda…or maybe even a combonation of the two.

A law in this style is meant to legislate morality, and as such, it’s probably a bad idea to support that type of law coming from a person showing flagarent disrespect for laws or behaves immorally.  Even if its hypocritical, it’s not much of an issue.

It can either be self-preservation (i.e. not recommended to stay with that person), or a sudden eye opener (e.g. realizing that his harassment is solely a form of cherrypicking from games to make them look bad), and the representative doesn’t know that yet. That’s why it’s not as much of an issue.

  56. 0
    lumi says:

It’s hypocritical because the content of the bill is completely separate from Thompson’s behavior.  He could be the biggest jackass on the face of the earth, but if he comes up with valid legislation, the Senate would be obligated to grit their teeth and put up with him.  Saying that they’re going to withdraw support because he’s being…well, being Jack Thompson, indicates that either 1) they’re withdrawing their support of a bill they feel is valid as punitive measure, which does a disservice to the people they’re supposed to represent, or 2) they initially supported the bill for political reasons, regardless of its validity, and they now find its sacrifice an acceptable cost to take punitive measures against Thompson.

I obviously believe it’s totally bogus legislation, but I honestly can’t figure out if the boneheads in Utah realize that and are just being petty now, or if they were being campaign opportunists in the beginning and have simply run out of patience for something they’ve known all along to be a sham.

There’s nothing naive about saying what is right.  I’m not saying I’m surprised by this; I’m saying that at least now, by the Senate President’s own words, they didn’t do what they should have.  It’s the difference between ignoring a crime you know someone committed because everyone just knows, and trying to ignore it when he was caught in the act in the middle of a packed football stadium.  Some bells are a little too big to be un-rung.

    JDKJ says:

No, there’s nothing inherently naive in saying what’s right. It’s the attempt to hold Whazzup to that standard and the expectation that Whazzup would actually do the right thing (i.e., conduct somedue diligence regarding Thompson and his Bill, exercise his own judgement, and not blindly bend to Gargoyle Ruzicka’s will) which smacks of naivity. It just don’t play like that in the real world of Utah politics.

  61. 0
    Balance says:

A third alternative is conceivable. It’s possible that Thompson’s behavior since the vote on the bill has made him/them aware of the character of the man behind the bill, and given his abusive and deceptive behavior, no longer trust the premise on which the bill was based. In other words, they may finally be considering the source, and therefore reconsidering the issue.

Yeah, I know it’s wildly unlikely, but I do make some effort to give people the benefit of the doubt. Either way, it means they’re likely sick of this issue and don’t want to hear anything more about it–which is good news for us.

    JDKJ says:

I believe you’re beginning to exhibit more than a fair share of naivity about how politics really works in practice. Jack Thompson was pushed unto the Legislature by the all-powerful Gargoyle Ruzicka, who many in the Legislature don’t dare oppose. As such, what "due diligence" was there to be done? Like what? There was any possibiliy of passing on Thompson and his whack-ass Bill after conducting due diligence? There wasn’t any such option. And to think there was is naive.

I’m a bit doubtful that’s him.  Granted, Thompson is no paragon of impeccable spelling and good grammar but I’ve never seen a communication from him riddled with that many typos.

Telling someone not to post Jack’s contact info here is a bit like closing the barn door after the horse ran out, stole your car and wife, and is living happily off your stolen bank info on a tropical island.

I agree that we shouldn’t do it, but given how readily available he makes it, it’s kind of becoming Dennis’ personal finger in the dike.

"AE: No posting JT’s contact info please."

I don’t condone it either, and he always sends out his contact info, even on thosepress releases he always seems to send out. If I wanted to contack Jack Thompson, I know how to find that information, but seriously, why bother? You arn’t going to trade intellegent diolouge with him. People have been trying for years. Kinda like calling in to that Eagle forum show where both the host and Jack keep cutting the caller off becuase he or she has an opposing view, and then calling the caller evil afterwards for opposing THEIR bill. A real waste of time. How do you counter these people when the other side doesen’t want to hear it?

And it might be funny that his email address starts out with amendmentone, but you have to realize that Thompson does believe in the first amendment, but only for himself and anyone that agrees with him, untill they start disagreeing with him, then it no longer applies.

GP is the only site that I’ve ever seen which redacts Jack’s personal info. All other sites leave it there, probably because Jack makes it public in the text of the submissions since he craves the attention they bring him. It’s probably one of the few things that still keeps him going; it makes him feel even more like Jesus.

The Utah State Senate should really have redacted Jack Thompson’s phone number, cell phone number, home address and e-mail address out of that e-mail string that they posted…

It just leaves an open door for the less…mature of the gamers to contact him repeatedly. Then he’ll go on and on about harrassment and such…

I think actually that’s why he does it.  We all know how much of a narcissist he is.  He probably does it knowing full well that someone will contact him and threaten and/or harrass him.  He knows he’s too tempting of a target, and he then can use those calls as further proof of the "conspiracy" that’s going on in his own mind.

Just a couple of observations after having read Jack’s emails:

    1) It looks like Jack’s about to alienate another ally here in Gayle Ruzicka.  They may be as extremeist as he is, but I think even she would start to tire of Jack’s histrionics after reading this.  It sounds as if she was trying to advcate tact to Jack in not emailing Waddoups on Easter Sunday, which would have been sound advice.  But as we all know, tact has never been and never will be Jack’s strong suit.  Also, questioning a supposed ally’s integrity and loyalty isn’t going to do much good for him either.  Something tells me Jack’s going to soon lose his gig as contributing writer to Human Events real soon if he hasn’t already.

    2)  What’s with his latest threat of him going back to Louisiana to work with the legislators there?  Didn’t he already get his ass handed to him there?  IIRC, he left in a huff and took his ball and went home when things didn’t go his way.  Then again, I’ve noticed Jack has what seems to be and almost amnesiac memory when it comes to embarrassing details that don’t translate to him ans anything other than him being "right" or "winning" (or it also could either be selective memory or just willful ignorance.  Any of the three is likely with him.)  What would make him think he’d be any more successful this time anyway? Especially now that the legislature and politicians there are now wise to him.  Does he really think anything would have changed?  Normally I’d be inclined to take Jack’s threats with a grain of salt.  But we all doubted him when he said he was drafting a bill in Utah and look at what just happened.  Incidentally, funny how Morley said Thompson, while a contributor, was not the sole author of the bill.  Yet here Thompson is taking full credit for it  Typical.  Anyway, Dennis, could you please follow-up on Jack’s claims about going back to Louisiana?

So Jack Thompson issued a press release… Jack Thompson might be right. He might be totally, completely, dead-on right on his video game issue. He might not (smart people can disagree). Either way, this behavior doesn’t help his cause.

This is so, so true. I learned it many years ago – it doesn’t matter what you believe or what you champion, it’s how you act that can make the difference.

Both of his careers (As an attorney and now as … a disbarred attorney) are a very slow train crash, just like Star Wars Galaxies. Some day it’ll eventually end – at least we hope.

Why is withdrawing his support in the face of Thompson’s constant e-mail harrassment hypocritical? Who said that he has to either tolerate that nonsense or risk being accused of hypocrisy? Why can’t he reasonably say that Thompson’s harrasment was a hidden cost of his support which he’s now unwilling to bear? Sounds entirely reasonable to me.

Waddoups either supports the bill or he doesn’t.  Email spam from the bill’s writer should not change his opinion on the bill.  If it does, he’s a hypocrite.  It just shows how petty-minded those who supported this stupid bill are.
