RapeLay Developer “Bewildered” By Furor Over Game

The controversy over RapeLay, an obscure but disgusting forced sex simulation, appears to be rekindling. GamePolitics readers will recall that the game sparked a furor earlier this year after it was found to be for sale by a third-party reseller on Amazon.com. In response to complaints the online retailer quickly removed the listing.

This month, New York-based women’s group Equality Now has targeted RapeLay and similar games for a letter-writing campaign:

Please write to [developer] Illusion Software asking it to withdraw immediately from sale of all games, including RapeLay, which involve rape, stalking or other forms of sexual violence or which otherwise denigrate women… Please write a similar letter to Amazon Japan.

Write also to… Japanese government officials… calling on them to comply with Japan’s obligations under [the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women] and the Japanese Constitution to… ban the sale of computer games such as RapeLay, which normalize and promote sexual violence against women and girls.

Australian news site ABC.net reports that the Japanese developer of RapeLay, Illusion, claims to be "bewildered" by the uproar. Spokesman Makoto Nakaoka told ABC.net:

We are simply bewildered by the [Equality Now protest]. We make the games for the domestic market and abide by laws here. We cannot possibly comment on [the campaign] because we don’t sell them overseas.

A Japanese Government spokeswoman to ABC.net:

[The government] realises the problem is there. While we recognise that some sort of measures need to be taken, the office is currently studying what can be done.

its totally hypocritical to say Jack thompson is a nutjob for calling for a GTA IV ban based on nothing but personal opinions of an ADULT game, and to do the EXACT SAME THING with this game.

I mean i even find it ironic JT is ridiculed for calling gta a ‘murder simulator’ , yet people will call this a ‘forced sex simulator’, and not see the huge face palming similarity there. Ironic that people spend years defending games and attacking JTs credibility, and then completely act JUST LIKE HIM when this game comes along. flip flop much?

Im sorry the people arent real, they are cartoon images, NO CRIMES are commited, it isnt a ‘simulation’, unless you find it an accurate representation to have sex using a mouse and keyboard. Simple as. That definition suffers from JUST as many flaws as people were so quick to point out to GTA.

Well, I pretty sure everyone here is fighting for the term "Gamer" to no longer hold the negative connotation it does.  As for "Otaku," it’s rather odd to me.  In my experience, only other anime fans actually knew the term, so being called an "Otaku" was a compliment, even though we’re all aware it’s supposed to be a negative thing in Japan.

Regardless, you can call yourself those things.  If you tell someone that stuff right off the bat, they may get the wrong idea about you.  That’s exactly why I don’t go up to new people and introduce myself by saying, "Hi!  I’m a losely religious Christian feminist gamer otaku girl who’s pretty liberal and supports controversial things like abortion and gay marriage."  These are the kind of things you ease the people you meet/know into.

But ultimately you know yourself, and you know how you act.  Good riddance to people who are so willing to judge you by stereotypes they won’t even bother to get to know you.

Wrong, kinda. The US Declaration of Independence, written in 1776. The Constitution was written in 17(89?)

Basically, it says that when the government becomes too powerful or too destructive to the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (liberty being your right to not have your internet filtered), the people have the right to abolish it and make their own, new government. Revolution, if necessary, and taking an active step yourself in making your country how you want it. It’s not just, "make a revolution and hope the new government works better." It’s, "Make a revolution, and take an active step in insuring that this new government respects your rights."

  10. TBoneTony says:

Well if you look on Amazon.com and find Phantom of Inferno and also Hourglass of Summer on there under Movies and DVDs. You will find both of them.

They were Interactive DVDs from AnimePlay.

They were based on Visual Novels from Japan only with the Hentai content taken out of them just so they could be marketed in America.

They are perhaps the best games I had played since the other ones I mention were great stories behind them even though I did not really play the other games.

Then there were "Rumbling Hearts" and "Shuffle" as well as "Kannon" who were Anime series that were based on those Visual Novels, some of which had Hentai content.

It is not about the Hentai that makes them great games, it is more about the storyline and how you had to play though the game.

But yeah, from the ones I have played, Phantom of Inferno and Hourglass of Summer have been some of the best Visual Novels I have been lucky enough to play.

  12. Nekowolf says:

Well, they did make a point that, a lot of feminism has been tarnished by the Third Wave feminism. It broke down, it’s ununified. Groups are fighting among each other: you got some say all men are evil; you got some say women are superior; some say women are always oppressed, regardless of the situation (even in committing murder); some say both sexes are biologically equal in every way; some say all women should have jobs and any who decided to be house wives are ignorant of their oppression and are in need of their help to break free.

Does that mean all of them are bad? Of course not. But the fact is, those groups now exist, and it has left a bad taste in the feminist movement. If you want to call yourself feminist, that’s fine; if you are a feminist who is pushing for equality, though, I think it would be best to discern yourself closer as a Second Wave feminist.

  13. Nekowolf says:

Sorry, but I must make the point of voting is NOT the only thing you can do.

    If anything, when that was written, revolution was in mind. Take Jefferson for example;

"God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty…And what country can preserve its liberties, if it’s rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost
in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure."

  14. NovaBlack says:

what about the original GTA? if that hadnt been allowd we wouldnt even have GTA.

The original awarded you for running over long lines of hari krishnas, and gave you completely non story driven ‘kill frenzys’ with no other point than to shoot / run over / chainsaw / flamethrower as many people as possible.

I mean lets not try and brush the real issue under the carpet. Both are about commiting VIRTUAL criminal acts. (arguably GTA features many MANY more!). So why is one a game that deserves defending, yet one is allegedly ‘abhorrent’ and it was ‘right’ for amazon to ban it?

I mean why is virtual rape worse than 100s of virtual murders?. Who decides?

I cant help but feel that is hypocritical.

I think both should be allowed. I dont want to play rapeplay. But i respect that it harms nobody, and respect somebody elses right to play it. I can exercise my right not to purchase it. Crisis averted.

  15. TBoneTony says:

    I agree.

    Much ado about nothing.

Sadly with my country’s internet filter plan that is in the planning stages, I may not be able to buy things online like from amazon.com or even E-Bay.

Now I don’t know if it would affect what I could buy online, but it is sometimes scary something that I personally like online can be taken away from me all because of examples like this.

  16. TBoneTony says:

In a world where people would think clearly and carefully before making generalisations, this would not happen.

But sadly, we live in a world where politics is about generating as much fear for political gains.

Sadly things like this do happen and people can make a huge stink, making a mountain out of a molehill.

Thus, is the reason why the ESRB may not introduce an AO18+ rating because of the fear that it could give the wrong impression that games like this might be legal.

And uproars like that would be all too common, but then hasn’t it always been like this in the American market when it comes to M17+ games?

No matter what is legal or illegal, there will always be people who are not happy.

Also I may as well move to Japan to get away from all of this.

I should try to learn how to talk Japanese before I do that.

  17. Father Time says:

I’m bewildered about the furor over the game as well.

I mean two used copies of it available on Amazon somehow translated to ‘widely available’.

The game is a porn game, not available in English, not ESRB rated and certainly not available in any of the major stores in the U.S. (I would say all stores but you never know).

And yet people still mad e a huge deal over this. I think this became around as big a controversy as Madworld and yet this controversy is all so fucking pointless.

Debates are like merry go rounds. Two people take their positions then they go through the same points over and over and over again. Then when it’s over they have the same positions they started in.

  18. Freyar says:

We cannot possibly comment on [the campaign] because we don’t sell them overseas.

This is the point that needs to be addressed. The game, and its content is not meant for the "oversensitive" international markets. Obviously there’s a market of some sort for this kind of media in Japan, and it is entirely legal to sell. I don’t see why there needs to be such an uproar, much like veryone else.

And being a male, well I guess you can see why that sort of name can give you a deeply negative seriotype

And being 24 in this time of global financial crisis and trying to get a job is so hard to do, I am better off living with my parents so I can raise up money easier.

I still pay for the house bills and car bills and food and petrol, but I also love to buy new Videogames, Anime and Manga, something that I can’t do if I was on my own that much.

But then again, we have no control over what new government comes in and how far they may be similar to the older government.

  21. Monte says:

The reason they do not attack anything else is simple… they aren’t looking…

If no one shoves in their face then they never see it… the only reason this game ever got noticed by anyone outside of japan that cares is because one guy put up a used copy for sale on amazon and someone saw it… there is no market for this stuff here in west, especially not on mainstream sites like amazon or major retail stores… you got to go online to like certain websites or maybe go to a porn store to find anything like that…

This is the same reason why GTA constantly gets attacked, while other games that are just as violent or offensive get a free pass… GTA is mainstream and everybody knows about it, while those other games are not recognized and thus go unnoticed.

I’m right there with you.  If GP is going to adopt the "We report, you decide," mantra (those were Dennis’ exact words in a past article’s comments section), then sentences like the first which repeatedly pop up every time Rapelay is featured have no place here.  Even without getting into the comparisons to other games like GTA, passing off your opinion as fact when you supposedly pride yourself as being a neutral news site is inappropriate at best, outright hypocritical at worst.  Want to talk about how disgusting Rapelay is?  No problem, write an op-ed.

Like you, I’ve brought this up more than once and have yet to see any response.  I’m not sure why it bothers me this much, but it does.  Maybe it’s because I’ve grown to like the site so much, and Dennis is usually very good about addressing the concerns of its posters.

And before all you self-appointed GP watchdogs jump up to tear my throat out, I’m not saying Dennis doesn’t have a right to his opinion on the game, or that he can’t express it, of course he does/can.  But I am saying that inserting your opinion (calling the game disgusting) in an article solely meant to inform sends a poor message: "Hey, of course we’re a completely neutral site…unless something comes up I find personally offensive…"

Has anyone actually looked through anime games to see what they have? I’m scared to tell you this, but this game is far from being the worst. It’s like the difference between the Soup Nazi and Hitler. You complain because your character rapes three women. What about the games where your character IS the tentacle monster? There are games out there where the bad guys do much worse to the woman then rape them. Do they understand that the theme of rape in their porn not only isn’t taboo; it’s standard, it’s instatutionalized? It’s a genre over there. And why are they only attacking the anime game? What about the hundreds of anime series? Or better yet, the thousands of live action movies? (Not exagerating numbers). Has anyone here surfed the web in Japan? Turn back, ye of weak stomache, less you fear to ever close your eyes again!

I’m going to heck for this, but go to o4oCoHoAoNo (masked to try and prevent retalitory flood and or DoS attacks) and ask them to post pictures of their favorite anime game. I’m sure that there are plenty of them that will find the worst games they can just to try and scar you for life (Note: I’m not to be held responisble for you being scarred for life).

  33. chadachada321 says:

"I think men and women should be equal under the law." That sounds a lot better, because men and women ARE basically equal as far as I can see in America, and it focuses less on the past and more on the now. We can’t be tied up by "historically, women have been subjugated as a gender," we must instead focus on what (if any) injustice there is now and changing it, and learning when injustice ISN’T taking place (like with these games, for example).

Yes, we must enforce our morality on the other cultures! They don’t see it, but that game reprograms their brains so that they don’thave any choice but to treat women worse! If they don’t see how wrong it is, we either need to propose new laws to censor this kind of thing, or fax letters to them, lots and lots of faxes.

Congradulations, you have just become Jack Thompson. Where do you want to draw the line? Do you guys think other countries should censor or pull Rapelay off the shelves, but not Grand Theft Auto 4? Why? It’s not for sale to children, retail in Japan actually has ratings for adult games.

I stand where I’ve always stood. No censorship, no exceptions. There are things that are illegal, and that is different then censored. But if it isn’t illegal, then it shouldn’t be censored. For example, I don’t think things like this are to be allowed to be accessed by children. I don’t see that as censorship. But the idea that someone shouldn’t tell me what I can and can’t see, should be extended so that I have no right to tell someone else what they can and can’t see. That goes from everything from GTA4 to Micheal Wiener.

  37. Rodrigo Ybáñez García says:

Still, is just a game created for a country where porn is very common and violence and sex can come togheter. Japan is a country where a TV actress can make the step to porn actress (AV Idol) and still keep her status, or even backwards…

The problem here is a clash of cultures. Even if is so wrong something in Country A, Country A can´t expect that Country B changes their customs or laws just because people in Country A don´t like it.

Even if it´s a game about rape, still is fiction, and trying to stop a fiction work won´t do anything for the real issue. We know it for sure. And I´m agree that if they want to stop rape on games, what is gonna to stop them to ask a ban about any mention of the subject in any media, being serious or not.

I don´t like Rapelay, but I can understand the implications behind this particular game. It´s awful, but it doesn´t make send to think that banning avery rape or violence on any media should stop real-life issues for anybody.

Anyways, the people trying to ban this fantasy-rape game is the same kind of people saying that porn and prostitution are somehow a way of enslave women. I can´t take serioulsy that kind of aproach. Sex can´t be only restricted for adults or marriage as these people want.

I’ll be blunt, as many people are probably aware from last time, I find the game offensive, however, I have no illusions that this gives me the right to demand a different country with different rules, culture and accepted behaviour change it’s nature purely to suit me.

I wouldn’t buy it, that’s for certain, but it would be arrogance of the highest order to say that because I have absolutely no wish to play the game, that everyone else on the planet should be denied the right to even make that choice for themselves.

  40. Zerodash says:

The only thing forced in GTA is combatting armed enemies and/or criminal scumbags for the most part.  I haven’t played the rape game, but if its anything like H-rape films, the game would depict terrorized innocent anime girls and trying to illicit a sexual response (in real life) from the player.

  41. Chaplain99 says:

I’ll just put it bluntly and say that it sounds more like Dennis covering his ass (no offense, Dennis, I can sympathize) than taking a real stand against the game itself.

There’s nothing wrong with that, but some people might not see such statements for what they really are.

    "HEY! LISTEN!"

  42. Wormdundee says:

Hmm, another not so subtle shot at this game by Dennis in the first sentence. What a surprise.

Now, I can understand you thinking the game is disgusting, but what’s your reasoning behind this game being disgusting and yet, in past stories about GTAIV you never took these little stabs at the over the top murder count in GTAIV? This is the kind of thing that in the Wikipedia world is referred to as ‘weasel words’.

Now I could be a little ridiculous here and say that GTAIV is MUCH worse than this game simply by counts of criminal acts. I obviously haven’t counted this, but I’d estimate that after playing through the whole GTAIV storyline you’ve probably amassed more than 100 counts of murder, not to mention counts of money laundering, kidnapping, extortion, drug trafficking, assault/battery and who knows how many counts of grand theft auto.

It’d be nice to have a response for once. I know you’ve been asked this question every time a story about this game pops up and I’ve yet to see an answer.

What makes this game disgusting (and I remember you saying that Amazon bowing to pressure was the ‘right thing’ to do) and abhorrent, but you are quite happy to defend GTAIV whenever it comes up?

I realize that the argument could be made that the point of this game is rape, while the point of GTA is not those crimes I’ve listed above. I find that a pretty weak argument because you HAVE to commit those crimes in the process of playing the game. I do understand your point if you choose to use that argument though.

EDIT: Ah, NovaBlack beat me to the punch. Curses!

hmm i still cant get over how vehemently GP attacks this game.

I still see no reason why it should be banned. I dont personally want to play it, but thats my choice. And it works perfectly well.

I just find it extremely hypocritical to support banning this game, yet allowing games like GTA, y’know the ‘cop killing muder simulator’?

hmm ‘cop killing murder simulator’ -> ‘no one has a right to ban what i should be able to play’

‘forced sex simulation’ -> ‘ ban this filth’

im sorry.. i just find that hypocritical :S

Yeah i am aware GTA has other things in it besides murder but lets face it, if you actually counted just how many ‘people’ you kill in that game its hundreds if not thousands. So.. why is that ok?Because its entertainment and nobody really gets hurt? .. umm whats the difference?

How is going on a kill frenzy slicing up people with a chainsaw (which isnt related in any way to story based goals) any more accepatable than a forced sex simulation?

    "…what?  They’re from CANADA.  Don’t judge me!"

Anyway, now that I’ve put my two-cents in, I’d like to make it clear: I do not condone rape.  At the very least, it’s pretty black humor (I’m not explaining that one, just roll with it); at most, it’s social genocide.  That being said, I’m an AMERICAN; whatever you think or say, if you’re not living in JAPAN and happen to be part of JAPANESE society, then what you say about JAPAN is not philosophically sound.  You’re seeing rape as something inherently wrong, while those for whom the game was intended may or may not see it as socially taboo.  Is it really our place to decide what a Japanese company produces?

    "HEY! LISTEN!"

  47. Chaplain99 says:

This also brings up another issue, namely that of player attention.  Who wants to play a game that focuses solely on how inherently bad rape is?  If that’s the focus of a game, then no one will pay it any attention.  Instead, the modern day artist needs to rely heavily on subliminal messages and user insight to get a message across.  In effect, the game would have to play more like, "Hey, I got the ROCKET LAUNCHER!…oh, and rape may or may not be the destroyer of male-female interaction.  I’m not sure, but I should know by level 20."

    …I’m just sayin’…^^;

Sorry about that, I can’t remember every single visual Novel I have been lucky enough to play or watch the Anime based on those game.

I know they are great too, so that is why I wanted to name as much as I can.

Plus I hope other people can name other Visual Novel games just so we at least know we don’t have to listen to these people who think they are all about raping sims

  52. TBoneTony says:

    That’s right, it is idiotic.

Plus this is what some people in many parts of the world do.

Even in Rome, the Pope wants people to stop using Comdoms and he also wants gay people to be straight. But it is stupid of saying such things because no one would ever listen to someone like that.

And in the end, they are the ones who will never win because they just keep on loosing support no matter how much they try to change people.

  53. TBoneTony says:

I would not go that far.

Instead I would opt to try and buy all the Hentai games and Anime and Manga before people bann it from the internet.

Where I come from, only just a few Hentai are ever released with an R18+ rating, and even then they have to be eddited for Australian market and even then, a Pope or religious person can still walk into a video store and demand that they stop selling the product or threaten that the police would get involved.

That is how far some people would be willing to go, even if it was classified as being ok for the market in a certain country.

for me, I would just buy everything I can before the time comes when either you can’t buy it anymore, or when my government imposes an internet filter accross Australia that would limit my own chances to own Hentai Anime/Manga and Games.

there is nothing we can do if the law goes against us.

So far with the internet, the law is on our side at the moment.

They’re still going crazy over this game.  God, when will these people shut and learn this if from Japan.  Are these people racist also?

We are simply bewildered by the [Equality Now protest]. We make the games for the domestic market and abide by laws here. We cannot possibly comment on [the campaign] because we don’t sell them overseas.

That’s true.  Who said hentai game are allowed in international area (unless a perosn import the game)?  Oh, goodness.  If these critics attack Persona (or Shin Megami Tensei) or anime/manga next.  This is probably going to have anime hater on Youtube ending up betraying video game like how the couple of animal-loving gamers ratted out to Peta for the dog killing in COD: WOW.  To me, people who ratted out to game-hating critics are considered traitor and this act is called treason. mikedo2007

You have said this several times, yet I have to wonder. Are the developers of this game (Rapelay) trying to "talk about these issues [rape] in a serious way"? I have read nothing that would suggest that the game does so. Everything I have read (not just the complaints about the game) is that the game has little actual serious discussion of rape and its consequences.

I like the makers’ response, (found here as translated by a different site):

“This product is intended for domestic distribution and was approved by Japanese regulators. We won’t accept this sort of criticism from overseas groups.”

Thank you. Between the "Canadian DMCA" pressure and now this, I’m getting sick of organizations in our country trying to tell the rest of the world what to do. It’s only made in Japan, it’s only (officially) distributed in Japan, let the Japanese handle it.

I’m not under the affluence of incohol as some thinkle peep I am. I’m not half as thunk as you might drink. I fool so feelish I don’t know who is me, and the drunker I stand here, the longer I get.

  58. limedescis says:

What you wrote isn’t really true either, nightstalker160.

There are only two "endings", and both end in the player’s death. The game does not force linear story progression, however, and is designed to allow "endless" play if the player takes actions that delay those endings, which creates the sort of "free reign" gameplay you’re talking about.

On a side note, I actually find most of these "dark" Japanese games to be less morally questionable than many Western games. I’ve noticed that Western games that feature heinious acts (mass murder, torture, etc) almost always try to create some kind of heroic Hollywood-style moral "justification" for the player. They hide behind narrative context to revel in dark actions. In contrast, I’ve noticed that Japanese games that feature heinious acts don’t try to hide the nature of it; there’s almost always an implicit recognition that while the player may enjoy those acts, they are still evil and not "justified".

You mean if I play GTA I’m not going to be a killer?!  Wow, the media’s led me astray.  But its true though, this is like the GTA in that people are quick to assume that video games are going to make people do what they do in the game.

If that was the case, I’d be gearing up my proton pack and ghost traps come June.

  61. TBoneTony says:

    Good point taken.

I would love to be a Japanese person and conplaining that all Movies and Videogames based on WW2 to be banned from America because of the affect that they have on people from Germany and Japan.

It would be the same thing as what these people are trying to do.

You can’t change history, there will always be rape in society.

But what we can do is try to understand why it happens and the serious issues about the consecquenses of those actions though all Japanese Videogames/Anime/Manga.

I personally like this stuff, because I can relate to it in some personal way.

I have two sisters, I also have a few female friends. Some of them have been raped, others have been sexually harrassed and even sexual taunting from male people who were just not nice.

It is not the Videogames that are the problem it is the society that we live that is the problem, and if we attack the Videogames, the Anime and Manga, then we are attacking the people who are trying to talk about these issues in a serious way by using a form or entertainment to help people to understand these things.

  62. Moriarty70 says:

You bring up an interesting point. It’d be interesting to see what it would be like to project our real world standards on game characters.

Lara Croft – Every country she vists would bring her up on charges for destroying the small things like pots at archological sites.

Max Payne – Hundreds of charges for murder in the second degree at least, plus a mix of smaller charges.

    etc, etc.

  63. TBoneTony says:

    Yep, you are right.

I only had read about that and not even taken note of what other endings can involve.

That is an example of how important it is to have played the game in the first place.

Also I won’t call you a pervert even if you have played the game and got the ending where you can perform gand rapes, because I know that even though we may kill other people in videogames, we are NOT ALWAYS like that in real life at all.

I can still keep on naming such amazing Visual Novel type of games, and none of those preaching political groups won’t have had any real idea what those games ever contained…

All they will think of these 5 games is that they would say that they are just about dating a girl and having sex with her.

But in reality, these Visual Novel type of games are MORE than just dating a girl and having sex, like these few Visual Novel type of games perhaps are allot more better examples of what Japan has to offer more than what Rapelay is about.

All in all, we gamers who have played games like this are no different than those who have played  GTA series. We are perhaps the best Videogame experts than most of those asshols who create negative attention from games that they have never played yet they call themselves Videogame Experts.

  66. nighstalker160 says:

That isn’t really true about the endings. There is at least one "bad ending" where the player character gets killed.

The main endings however involve the player character getting "free reign" over the victims even being able to create gangrapes.

  67. GoodRobotUs says:

Personally, I think the company should write back and demand the withdrawal of every Film ever set in the Pacific during WW2, because it is ‘insulting to the Japanese people’, you won’t be able to hear for the cries of ‘First Amendment!’ from the same people that want to censor other countries.

  68. Adrian Lopez says:

Why aren’t they also asking people to please "write to [Film Studio X] asking it to withdraw immediately from sale of all movies, including [Movie X], which involve rape, stalking or other forms of sexual violence or which otherwise denigrate women…"?

And calling on Japan to "comply with Japan’s obligations" under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, over a video game? They’re really grasping at straws, aren’t they? They must think video game characters have the same rights as real women.

  69. TBoneTony says:

Only thing I don’t like about the game is that it makes the player take control of a rapist,

From from everything else about the game as I have read, like all the endings involve the rapist being killed, and the way it trys to portray rape as a horrible and crimminal act, in my opinion is a work of Art.

No, it is not the type of art that should be seen in public, but it is a type of confronting art that deserves to be aknowlaged that even though it is horrible, it does say something about our society.

Now we may as well move onto a better example of a Hentai game please, like Rumbling Hearts, Suffle, Little Sister or Kanon?

There are so many Hentai games that portray honest and deep issues about our society, even the Visual Novels and Dating Sims that don’t always have the Hentai content in them.

People should understand to look at both the good and the bad things in these games, not just the bad things all the time.

  70. TBoneTony says:

In the end, whether they have played the videogame or not, these political groups are nothing but loosers who have no lives except to conplain about everything they hate in the world.

We don’t need people like these to ruin our lives.

In the future, the gamer generation will outnumber these political loosers and we will expose them as the slanderus attention seekers as they are.

    </emotional statement>

  71. limedescis says:

I think he was referring to video games in general, not Rapelay particularly. And I think he brings up a good point, namely that it’s almost impossible for games to explore issues like rape, because people are so prone to moralistic screaming over it.

For example, there’s this small western indie game called "The Path", which is quite an artistic statement on various female issues. There are several scenarios within it that contain imagery that could imply rape (nothing explicit). Yet that still didn’t stop many people from screaming about how wrong it was, that the makers were merely trying to be needlessly exploitive, etc etc etc.

Furthermore, equalitynow’s call for a widespread general ban would most certainly affect so many other Japanese erotic games that treat touchy issues in a much more thoughtful manner. All this goes to show that the constant media circus over Rapelay is more indicative of a greater overall "chilling effect" that plagues the general gaming medium, rather than anything specific to one particular game itself.

The game industry is constantly harped on to "grow up", yet at the same time suffers much more censorship pressure than other industries like books and film.

  72. mirumu says:

Edit: Sorry, this was meant in reply to the original poster, not your comment

I diagree. To me this is exactly the same situation as GTA in that a serious criminal acts are being portrayed in a game. If anything I’d have to say I consider GTA worse in that it’s possible to commit mass murder which is as serious as crimes get.

Rapelay may well be offensive to many, but this is exactly how many people feel about violence in games like GTA. Taboos around sex and violence are not the same in all cultures.

  73. SticKboy says:

Look, it’s not even a proper game! It’s interactive porn FFS! This does not belong with your "quick, we must defend this – THEY’RE BASHING GTA *waaaaah*" usual reactions, dipshits!

Personally I have no problem with this kind of porn – seriously, it makes for a good fap; plus it’s CG, so no real humans are harmed – but this is not gaming as usually covered by GamePolitics. It needs to be disected under a totally different critical lens.

  74. RedKing says:

I have nothing particuarlly against this game (suject mannor a bit on the ick side for me).

However my mother was raped when I was young and that hits quite close to home for me but I won’t play Censor with this.

Everyone (who is old enough) has the right to play this in their domestic country, after all this was a domestic game, right?

  75. Wormdundee says:

Ah I see now. I’m glad you’ve cleared things up now. You have a very solid argument when you throw out a line like "yes Japan has a strong Culture of Rape". You sure showed me! That’s some research right there. I would be impressed if you could somehow link the panty dispensers to rape. Obviously that’s not possible, but I encourage you to give it the old college try.

Now it’s obvious you’re not even trying to back up your argument with any facts, and are just going to repeat ‘culture of rape’ ad nauseum. So, I’ll just end with this.

It’s obvious you have some deep-seated hatred of the Japanese, I don’t know what happened to you but it doesn’t forgive your blatantly racist viewpoints. You disgust me sir. Please come back when you get an education and can think with logic instead of emotion.

As much as I despise them both, Domestic Violence & Rape have been around for thousands of years since the Roman Empire. These attention whores start these bullshit controversies as it is something brand new & needs to be stopped. For one thing, the game is in Japan, the US Government can’t force Japan to withdraw Hentai or anything related to that source, only the Government of Japan can do that. Most women’s novels talk about sex & rape sometimes, it’s in movies like Play Misty For Me, Fatal Attraction, that awful Obsessed with Beyonce Knowles & the government don’t complain about that. next time the guy that was selling RapeLay should of added a warning & whoever bought it, should of hid it instead of flashing it in everyone’s faces where the mother couldn’t find it, now that happened he can’t jack off to it anymore.

What we got here is failure to communicate!

I would like to say to Game Politics that I am sorry for the statements that I had made about my persoal life.

But the reality was, I sometimes get a bit emotional and even a bit angry of those old negative steriotypes.

Also, I know that there are allot of risks with online life, as there are risks with all things in life.

From my experience, I never considered that I would meet someone online that could become a special part of my life.

We both meet in 2005, on an Anime/Videogame Fan-Fiction forum and things went from there.

What started from a few kind and positive reviews with a few stories and poetry amongst each other, we slowly became like close online friends within 2 years.

We also talked to eachother though web-cam just so we both knew who we are.

We never really shared anything too personal like any naked pics or that.

It was an honest online friendship.

What I was trying to talk about that there are some females who do like the Hentai thing, and there are some females who like the tentacles.

All I could come up with as proof was someone who I knew online who I was lucky enough to know personally online,

But still, you got to be careful online as well as being careful in real life.

Like I feel safer to talk about Hentai to someone online more than trying to talk about Hentai to someone in real life.

Also you just use a pin-name, never use your real name as people could exploit you that way.

You don’t see anything wrong with that?

I never understood why people can say they have a girlfriend, or even stay with a girlfriend that they have no physical contact with. (Not necessarily sex, but if you can’t even hold hands with the person..) I mean, I had a buddy once who tried to kill himself because the "Mega-Hottie Girlfriend" that he "met" online and sent him a bunch of "her" naked pictures stood him up after he spend hundreds of dollars to fly to Florida and meet her after 4 YEARS of correspondence.

The entire time, I was saying "Dude, Shes FAKE, FAKE, FAKE." If he wasn’t so depressed about it, I would have said "I told you so." so many times..

I mean, to each his own, and if you find someone and somehow manage to make it a long lasting, intimate relationship through some crazy amounts of luck, by all means, congratulations. But you might want to take a close look at yourself and approach anyone and everyone you "meet" online with HUGE amounts of skepticism and suspicion.

Plus I have a girlfriend who also loves it too. But she is only an online girlfriend who I have known for over 3 years now. But nothing more than that.

So yeah, I can be lucky to say that I do know a girl who does love the tentacles as much as I do, only thing is she is from half the world away.

But that is what is so special about the internet.

From where I live, I can’t view that type of Hentai unless if I get it from the internet, plus I had been dreaming of that ever since I was a teenager way before I ever got the internet at home.

So I have loved the tentacles before I even knew it existed.

But there is something good about games like RapeLay, at least they try to talk about serious issues in society in a fantasy videogame for adults to play.

But then again, perhaps it was not the best idea to make a game with the player as the rapist.

All I can say to these group of morons who never have played the game, STOP trying to blame videogames and focus all that negative attention on REAL rape, NOT FANTASY rape.

What you mention actually turned into big internet flare-up some time ago:

Summary: Radical feminist woman (going by the online nickname "Biting Beaver") catches her teenage son "Brandon" watching porn. On her blog she agonizes over how he’s now irrevocably corrupt, says he’ll definitely become a rapist, and wishes that she aborted him. The online "Anonymous" movement finds out, and organizes a campaign to "Save Brandon". Things get weird because both sides are more than a little crazy. Biting Beaver harbors very extreme views (possibly due to numerous psychological issues and trauma), and Anonymous is, well… we all know how Anonymous is like. I can only imagine how awful it must have been/might still be for Brandon, being caught between a controlling mother who very publically wishes he was dead and the bizzare antics of the online hive-mind.

Google "save brandon biting beaver" if you want more details. It’s kind of interesting in a train-wreck sort of way.

Ok First off, Zerodash didn’t say that feminism is bad. Feminism is about woman being on an equal feild with men. Hey I’m sure the majority of us support equality of all sorts. And Yeah Andrea Dworkin is nuts, claimed to have been abducted by aliens and force to serve in a penial coloney. And further to the point, on any of those blogs Identify yourself as a male and try to have a intelligent arguement and see what happens.

Femanazi’s on the other had don’t want equality of men and woman instead want to subject men and remove anything from males they want to. Take Hecate’s post in the word press link, She says that "My previous sexual experiences can best be described as a series of rapes." Continues to say "It’s a form of abuse, plain and simple." Then procedes to call the men who had a CONSENT to have sexual relations with her "they were all rapists and didn’t even know it." Those are direct qoutes. In other words She calls all men Rapists.

My feelings on Rapelay are poor to begin with. First it glorifies rape which on a personal level hit’s close to home. Second Well as I already said rape hits rather close to home.

Now here’s a big diffrence between my culture (American) and the creaters culture. Sex in Japan is much more open than it is in the US. To Japan the US in extremly prudish when it comes to sex.

That movement has been hijacked by the radical elements for decades.  As an example, Andrea Dworkin is still a regular aspect of women’s studies coursework.  A psycho like her should have been relegated to a looney fringe from the get-go, but the radicals running Feminism won’t have that.  It’s the same reason the SCUM manifesto is still available within Feminist circles today.

  104. Neeneko says:

So because radicals exist, all feminism and women’s issues are evil?

This is the same logic that says because a school shooter likes games all gamers are evil, or because someone threatens JT that makes gamepolitics and other such groups ‘hate groups’

This particular orginization got the wrong end of the stick on this issue.. but as a group they are trying to shut down some honestly abhorent things.

Neo umm bat of reality heading your way.

Strong culture of rape? You act as if Japan is the only country that has rape victims and that they’re ass backwards. Hate to tell you this WW2 Rapes where commited by hundreds of GI on all sides. Don’t think that Japan was the only group to do it. Japan has a MUCH.. in fact VASTLY diffrent view on sex than that of most of the world. Such as they are in fact vending machines in Japan that depense porn. While in the US for example while you can still buy pornography depending on the state and county, and sometimes even township laws, you may need to be as old as 21. You want countries that have laws that "promote" a culture of rape. Hundreds of human rights violations accured in tribal regions (meaning regions of a country with no form of Federal Law in this case) of Somial as well as Iran, Iraq. Woman accused men of raping them, but without an eyewitness for them to help prove their case they where sentence to a beheading.

Yes the woman who have accused men where beheaded because they counldnt prove they where raped. So according to tribal law since they where no longer "virgins" where killed. Thats a bit closer to promoting a culture of rape.

Heres a few articles to show that that’s closer to a culture of rape. Now before anyone starts yelling "Anti-islamic" whatever. Let me make it clear that I am NOT agianst any culture shape fastion or form. These cultures do not support rape, but the way the laws are set up in these cases is questionable and do in essence support a so called "culture of rape" that was probably never the intention but has been perveted to protect the wrong parties.

  111. Wormdundee says:

Oh I just noticed something about this article.

How come GTAIV != murder simulation but RapeLay = ‘forced sex simulation’. Irony strikes again!

O and Neo_DrKefka, what the fuck? Japanese have a strong culture of rape?

I won’t deny that there were many rapes committed by Japanese soldiers during WWII, but if you seriously believe that they have a ‘strong culture of rape’ then you are as ignorant as you are arrogant.

  112. Neo_DrKefka says:

We are supposed to feel bad for Japan attacking us and us nuking them for a War they provoked, a war they committed mass Genocide and a war were to this day they will apologize for everything but the massive rape they unleashed to the innocents traveling or staying in the Eastern World.

  113. Neo_DrKefka says:

Yes, Japan does have a strong history of supporting a Rape based Culture. In World War II countless Chinese women were raped and pillaged and even American and Canadian woman and espically Austrialian women were taken as slaves and used as "comfort women."

The Japanese would target luxury cruisers and use the men for slave labor and same with the less attractive women and then they’d use some of the Western Women as comfort women.

The Japanese have a strong culture of rape

  114. Gaming Observer says:

Are you sure about that?  I know why you say so, they certainly have their taboos, but this is the same country where it’s normal for men to read anime porn in public.  I think their attitudes toward sex go pretty deep – the love for tentacle rape, shit porn, and stuffing eels in odd places must come from somewhere.

  115. Daria_C says:

Time to put an end to this…

The reason the pornography from Japan is so….ya know, is because Japanese society is far more opressive of sexuality then the west is.

I knew chosing a major of  Japanese History and minor in Japanese Studies for college was good for something. ^_^

  116. Chaplain99 says:

Oh, snap.  Those five minutes you each spent typing up scathing responses were sure spent well.

    "HEY! LISTEN!"

  117. Gaming Observer says:

His statements were not even remotely racist.  Perhaps you think it’s racist because you’re pre-supposing that it must be?  You may simply be looking for racism, in which case you’re likely to find it everywhere.  Personally, I think your longwinded explanation of why his characterization of rape in Japan as an epidemic, is just plain nuts.  I doubt he’s carrying around WW2-inspired sentiments, in his expression of thoughts shared with him by Japanese friends.

    What’s next?  Is this racist?

You’ll have to explain that to Mr. Yoshida, who in fact owns and distributes the product, and is himself pictured on the box.

  118. limedescis says:

I don’t want this line of discussion to get more any hostile than it already is, so I’ll keep my angry accusations of racism in check if you’ll keep your baseless accusations of rape epidemics in check. Let’s accept that we both stepped over the line here, and move on. Deal?

  119. Alyric says:

As was your charge of racism.

I was basing my statement on the information I had. I’ve never lived in Japan.

You’re right, anecdotal evidence is weak – it’s why I pointed it out. Whose is correct? I don’t know. Maybe neither. Maybe both. Maybe it depends on where you live in Japan. Perhaps I simply know someone who’s had bad personal experience(s).

But next time, I would strongly encourage you to keep the accusations of racism in check.

  120. limedescis says:

Alyric: How could that possibly be construed as racist?

Perhaps you may be unfamiliar with anti-Japanese racism, but there’s a long-established stereotype of "sneaky untrustworthy Japs", which mainly originated from WW2 (due to the Pearl Harbor surprise attacks), was reignited during the 1980s over fears of the surging new Japanese economy (Japan was regularly accused of practicing sneaky and underhanded economic tactics), and still lingers to this day, especially among the older generation. This stereotype also has looser connections to the wider "inscrutable Oriental" stereotype which predates WW2 (Victorian era).

In that context, it’s quite easy to construe racism when you claim that there’s a rape epidemic despite evidence to the contrary, especially when Japan’s rate is still comparatively low even if you multiply their per-capita statistics by a horrifying factor of 10. The multiplied per-capita statistic for Japan is still comparable to the unmultiplied per-capita statistic of other Western nations; why aren’t you saying that those Western nations have an "epidemic" of rape too?

Alyric: To be fair, I should point out that my information is second hand and nearly five years old. Perhaps things have changed a great deal since then.

People have been suspicious of Japan’s low crime rate for much longer than a paltry five years. For decades there’s been significant scrutiny from extremely capable foreign and domestic agencies, yet despite that there has never been any meaningful evidence of any kind of invisible "epidemic" of violent crimes such as rape. I personally think Japan has a lot of serious problems, but violent crime isn’t one of them.

( And anecdotal evidence is quite frankly worthless, since everyone’s is different and unverifiable. For example, my anecdotal evidence is the complete opposite of yours. My Western female friends felt much safer in Japan, and my Japanese female friends have complained that Japanese men aren’t forceful enough, that they’re too polite and meek. Is your anecdotal evidence right, or is mine? It’s impossible to tell, which is why I didn’t want to mention my anecdotal evidence in the first place. )

(( I apologize if I come off as forceful or rude, but your usage of "epidemic" was offensive, baseless, and completely uncalled for. ))

  121. Alyric says:

How could that possibly be construed as racist? While, I admit, it’s anecdotal evidence, it comes directly from Japanese friends.

When one of my old high school friends went to teach English in Japan for a while, one of the first things the *government* warned her about was the high rate of sexual deviancy and rape. She was given a very extensive lecture on things to avoid because of it.

Edit: It’s not a matter of distrusting the government’s statistics, it’s a matter of cultural difference. While their society is certainly changing, many in Japan still view rape very differently than we do, and it often goes unreported. There isn’t anything sinister about the statistics; there’s simply a greater divide between reported and unreported rapes in Japan than some other countries.

To be fair, I should point out that my information is second hand and nearly five years old. Perhaps things have changed a great deal since then.

  122. ZippyDSMlee says:

Bascily it boils down to the US having more cases of rape/assault(as in violent beatings) and japan havening more cases of minor assault(as in gropings and stranger stuff that dose not do as much damage) and possibly more unreported instances of minor assault and rape, the point is Japan is safer for women than the US prehaps not "better" but in general safer.

  125. limedescis says:

The statistics I’m referring to in the experiment are the per-capita statistics. Even if you assume the worst and multiply Japan’s official per-capita statistics by 10, it’s still not an "epidemic"; they’re comparable to the reported official statistics of other Western nations.

  126. Chaplain99 says:

Barring the fact that Japan is a much smaller place than the U.S…but the "per capita" would negate that, wouldn’t it?

    "HEY! LISTEN!"

  127. limedescis says:

No, rapes are not an "epidemic" in Japan. This misconception gets repeated over and over, and it’s quite frankly very racist, the same old "you can’t trust those sneaky Japanese" canard.

Look, if you distrust Japan’s official per-capita statistics so much, then let’s try this experiment. Let’s assume that Japan is so horrible that you have to multiply their official per-capita statistics by 10. Let’s also assume that other first-world Western nations are so good that their official per-capita statistics are accurate as reported.

The result? Even if you assume that things are so bad in Japan that only 1 out of 10 rapes are reported, and that things in the West are so good that all of their rapes are reported, Japan’s official per-capita statistics are still comparable to (and sometimes even less than) the official per-capita statistics of other first-world Western nations such as the UK and the USA.

Even under such unfair conditions, Japan still comes out quite favorably. Japan is a modernized, first-world nation, and deserves the same benefit of the doubt as any other first-world Western nation.

EDIT: specified "per-capita" statistics, as the parent poster referred to

  128. Alyric says:

That’s because the per capita rape statistic is only calculated from reported rapes; actual rapes are something of an epidemic in Japan, unfortunately.

Edit: Though I should point out that it isn’t as bad in Japan as, for instance, South Africa.

  129. ZippyDSMlee says:

Last I checked Japan has a lower percapita rape statistic than the US, though you have more minor assaults(groping, ect) its partly the culture and partly heavy and hard sexualized  fiction is easy to get in one form of another.

Rape is over rated and is easily misconstrued as a form of dominance, rough sex  or forced sex is a form of foreplay, rape is one sided by definition with only one willing partner..

Having a "healthy" fiction and sex industry allows the beguiled modern worker "office/service worker" to blow off steam without a hooker, if anything Japan is showing us how to balance out ones society at least in the regards to fiction .

I agree with this for over 9000. Not the rape being a turn on, but the idea that games should not be banned on subject. I feel like virtual outlets do more good then harm. Everyone has a vice a for some it could be as simple as feet but no matter what your vice, a harmless outlet for it relieves stress that otherwise builds up to an explosion.

If no one was actually raped during the making of the game, and playing the game doesn’t control a robot that runs out and rapes someone, and it’s all fantasy and fake, then why should it be a crime? I’m getting tired of this group of people that want to control even our thoughts, so that nothing is sacred anymore. I mean i’m starting to feel like the movie Equilibrium, all thought and emotions must be supressed for the betterment of humankind! no feelings or thoughts allowed! Take your daily interval. Come on Japan, don’t give into these pussies who are trying to change your society. Yes ban the REAL child porn, but don’t bann the ANIME or MANGA or GAME Hentai. Or else there will be no way artists could even try to talk about these serious issues in society though their Manga/Anime and Videogames.

"I can imagine someone trying to get a law passed that bans all being imported into the USA"

They can try, but honestly, I’d see it as a fail. I don’t think it’d pass, or it would be overturned if it did. But also, I don’t think it’d be federal, I think it would have to go state-by-state.

Not only that, but there’s always the internet. Just download the game.

  141. Neeneko says:

It is a pretty standard stance to take…. it is also the same stance that, say, movies are taking against games.  It makes it difficult to have sympathy for the gaming press when they are so willing to throw thier own to the wolves in order to look more mainstream.

  142. Sukasa says:

Its actually worse then fictional rape for at least video games.  Video games can’t even have fictional sex or nudity.  I can go into Best Buy and find a movie that has some fictional sex(and nudity) in it.  I can go to where I work and find LOTS of books that have fictional sex and non fictional sex books like Sex for dummies.  Yet for some reason video games are pretty much prohibited from having a sex scene on par with R rated movies(much less nudity).  Those games that do have it, like hentai games above are hard to find and only findable online.  Now I figure eventually this will change as we gamers get older and larger in numbers.  While I find it kinda of a double standard(since movies tend not to) but if to get games on par with R rated movies, stores can easily place them behind the counter or in a glass case.

On the article, though its kinda sad but basically you have a liberal group now demanding such games be stopped basically and I’m sure there will be some conservative groups who will protest because its anti christian.  Guess for those who enjoy japanese dating sim games, better get them while you can.  I can imagine someone trying to get a law passed that bans all being imported into the USA.  I’m surprised JT hasn’t joined the uproar yet.

  143. limedescis says:

I am not sure GP is all that high and mighty here either.  Every time this game comes up GP makes very sure to let every know over and over how abhorent the game is and is careful to barely (if at all) defend it’s right to exist.

It does seem rather inconsistent, especially compared to the treatment that other violent games have received here. On the other hand, the mainstream media does pay some attention to GP, so imagine the media circus that would ensue if GP didn’t act that way. Like it or not, currently it’s much more acceptable to defend fictional violence than fictional rape (despite the fact that rape is really another form of violence). So similar to how politicians always try to avoid appearing "soft on crime", I’m guessing that for various reasons GP doesn’t want to risk appearing "soft on rape".

  144. ZippyDSMlee says:

At elast tis subject matter(BEWBS!!) is more interesting than a few dozen modern games with poor gameplay I could mention…

  145. GTCv Deimos says:

In this one case, I’m gonna call the whole "points thing" not particularly relevant. sure there are no point system (revealing that we’re dealing with self-important finger wagging old quacks)… but everything else is pretty relevant…

I mean, even GTA at it’s worse, didn’t allow you to stock, violate, and sexually assault anyone… so the whole "points for killing old ladies" didn’t apply, cuz you neither gained points, nor did you have to necessarily target that ol’ lady…

Rapelay, the whole point is to do all of the above… the stocking, impregnating, and potentially aborting. You can’t play the game and not guide these acts…

My point isn’t to bash the game… I’m just saying, despite being completely misguided, and criminally arrogant… these women for the most part have their facts straight… well… at least within an acceptable perameter… you know… for someone who doesn’t live in the secular world.

  146. Neeneko says:

I am not sure GP is all that high and mighty here either.  Every time this game comes up GP makes very sure to let every know over and over how abhorent the game is and is careful to barely (if at all) defend it’s right to exist.

  147. TBoneTony says:

I can also add that many Japanese Hentai games have only been Visual Novels.

So there is NO point scoring system at all, only just picking your response to certain siturations in a story of what would you do (a, b or c) and it goes from there.

Kinda slow paced but if you like to take your time playing though the game from reading allot of text then it can be really enjoying.

Plus with some games, the Manga art are only just drawings and they don’t animate at all.

They just post up a pic that displays the characters emotion and the background area.

It is all verry much a story driven game that is a Visual Novel.

  148. Joran says:

Well, usually game critics have a poor understanding of games; they tend to imagine games like Pac-Man or Space Invaders where the goal is to get a high score.  So, they state something like "players are rewarded by POINTS for doing bad stuff", such as GTA.

We know, because we play games, that very few games, especially sand-box games have a point system anymore.

  149. GTCv Deimos says:

ummm… actually as far as I understand, these are all real aspects of the game, right down to the abortion.

  150. TBoneTony says:

I would call those exagerated errors Political Hate Speech,

but then again under the 1st Admendment people can lie about anything and get away with it. Like Fox News and CNN for example. Even the Eagle Forum can lie about stuff and get away with it if no one catches them out.

That is why a gamer who is also well known in the media industry needs to ask these disgrunteled people if they have played the game yet, and really question what they have said about the game in question.

People deserve to hear both sides of the story even when one side does not want the other to have their time in front of the camera to explain in full detail why they are innocent.

  151. TBoneTony says:

I know, and that’s why it sucks to be a gamer who likes Hentai games.

Everyone will attack you if you try to defend yourself. And if you ask them if they have played the game, they get offended for you making a stronger argument and proving them wrong.

Just like in the Mass Effect situration, like if anything, Videogame Companies should sign up for an premptive-slander protection that would sue anyone from political groups and news reporters from even taking the context of a Videogame out of line, like saying that a game awards points for violence and sex when there are no points earned.

And even a slander lawsuit when someone tries to say that a game contains pornagraphic rape when in reality there was no rape at all, I wonder how long it would be until the Videogame Companies gather together and try to fight back against all this missinformation.

Also for Japan, they get hard done by because not only because of Whaling (witch I don’t agree with their policies but I also don’t agree with what Greenpeace tries to do either) and now their adult Videogames are under attack too by people who don’t understand them.

but I guess the best thing that anyone can do, is just to say that these game are ONLY avaliable commercially in Japan and online stores from Japan.

No one deserves this much negative attention. Not even Japan who have suffered enough from this sort of culture bashing.

  152. chadachada321 says:

If it was my company and my game (I don’t know how international law works concerning libel/slander, but if this was all in America), I’d sue for libel. She lied and made dangerous assumptions specifically to make this game/company look bad, speech that is not protected by the first amendment.

  155. TBoneTony says:

Also I won’t buy the game as much as I have been talking on here.

Mainly because there is no real element of love within this game, and also there are no tentacles involved.

So yeah, I would still defend such a game because it is way too close to something that I do like.

If you don’t defend something that you don’t like, then you won’t be able to defend something that you do like because the law does not care what you do like and what you don’t like, the law will just smash you if something you like becomes something that everyone hates.

    Or something like that.

  156. Chaplain99 says:

I’d say that higher than 10% are tolerant with it in their own sex lives with the right guy/girl…

Oh, and bullshit would rape porn be better than a rape fantasy! I’d have such a better sensation if I ever got the chance to test it out with my gf, because I’d take it as far as possible without actually hurting her/doing something she wasn’t okay with. With games/movies, you’re tied to a script. In real life, you’re tied with the rope that is in my truck. =p

  159. Adrian Lopez says:

"In the context of the story, those characters are being raped.  Which makes the personal sensation of ‘pleasure’ from the person watching it more real than if his girlfriend ‘agreed’ to cry during consentual sex."

You can either look at the pretend "reality" of the fictional story (a woman is being raped), or the reality itself (people are engaged in fantasy). In looking at only the first when considering the video game and looking only at the second when considering the play acting, you are in fact engaging in a dishonest comparison between the "realness" of the video game’s fiction and the "fakeness" of pretending during play acting.

You can play armchair psychologist all you like, but so far you have presented nothing more than flawed logic as evidence of your claim.

  160. Rodrigo Ybáñez García says:

I understand what are you telling me, but as I said, rape in porn is common in Japan, not on the USA, but still it exist here in America.

I know that very few woman enjoy porn. In Mexico is very rare to know a woman willing to watch porn with you (it´s a big no no).

We don´t produce porn (at least, not as USA) but still we have sexual crimes. In many villages on the south of Mexico, men sell their daughters for very little money or even for beer. I don´t think they have watched any anime or game to learn to do that.

You have to consider what "common" means to different people.  You can say that rape fantasy is "pretty common" in the West, but I would argue that it is not (nor is it particularly "common" in Japan, either).  Despite what some men want to believe, a very small percentage of women actually enjoy rape play as a form of sex play.  I don’t remember the exact numbers, and frankly, every study tends to give a different figure.  But I beielve the average was less than 10%.  I certainly don’t have any friends that enjoy rapeplay, so from my own perspective, it isn’t "common."

On another issue (and because I don’t want to start another post), there is a difference between real life rapeplay, and rape in porn.  In real life, no matter how much you protest or cry or scream, both of you know that it’s actually consentual.  The very opposite of rape.  But in porn, even though the characters are fictional, their scripted motivations are more real than if you engaged in real life rape play.  In the context of the story, those characters are being raped.  Which makes the personal sensation of "pleasure" from the person watching it more real than if his girlfriend "agreed" to cry during consentual sex.

Sigh, reading my own post, I didn’t explain that very well.  But in a psychological way, what happens in a fictional story can be more "real" than if real people were just pretending.  I don’t know how to say that better, but anyone with a few college credits in PSY might understand.

    100% agreed, nekowolf.

Rape fantasy is fun, as long as it remains just that. I’ve had several encounters with my girlfriend that involve rape fantasy or dominance and bondage/restriction. It is a lot of fun. She even had me "rape" her friend, who used to tell her all the time that she fantasized about it. There is something almost animalistic about it, as long as it is done responsibly and with everyone’s consensus.

Even though I am too much of a softy to make it truly "Realistic," (Read – Brutal) it got everyone’s heart pumping and was a TON of fun, and I am not ashamed to say it.

People need to loosen up and try new things. Who knows, maybe they might enjoy it.

  163. Nekowolf says:

"but the west tend to be very ashamed of themselves"

So true, and I really wish people wouldn’t be so ashamed of it. Try to break out of it. If my girlfriend wanted me to rape her, I would do it and love it!

Am I ashamed to say it? Fuck no. We need to break out of this sexual taboo that has gripped our culture for so long. There’s already progress starting to happen, I think. The thing is though, you must employ responsibility in regards to sex. And often times, there’s just not enough of that responsibility.

Usually people who blow their stack like this aren’t effected by said social issues so have to poke their nose into someone else’s social issues.

It’s people like those that make the planet hate the U.S.

actually the third party was selling it in the UK

none of these people actually know of a case of it being sold in america.

one person sold it second hand in the UK now all the americans are getting pissy at japan

There’s no question it is a game. It may not have 3d graphics and full controls over your enviroment, sure its probably like a dating sim where its more of a multiple choice graphic novel, but its still a game.

Yes. Sadism and violence in sex are very common on japanese sexual literature. But still we have Marques de Sade books about the same subject.

But not every hentai manga, anime or game is about rape. Many times can be about consensual sex (even with tentacles ^^)…

(how do I know about the subject so much? mmm… *runs away*)

Rape is bad in Japan, definitely, but they are much more relaxed about porn and sexuality. They view real violence/gore the way we view sex (as taboo) but treat sex the way we treat violence (not nearly as taboo and much more accepted). That is my understanding at least. Rape games are fine because they are just that, games, and porn used for entertainment. Sure, it’s gross, but if it turns you on, why the hell not? At the very least, it’s a chance to play as if you’re someone else (a rapist) much the same way that it’s fun to sometimes plug in GTA and kill innocent people just for the hell of it. It gives people a chance to be and do something they aren’t/can’t/wouldn’t, and would only negatively affect someone if they use it a) way too much or b) if they are mentally unstable or extremely impressionable.

The idea of rape is a turn-on for me, because it’s a feeling of power and dominance that is naturally wanted by humans (males?), but I realize that rape is incredibly wrong and infringes on other people’s rights (I support the death penalty or worse for rapes of the highest degree). Thus, I can either role-play with a girl in real life (which would be hard to convince a girl to try), or watch movies/play games about it. If I had no outlet for my sexual urges…I think that I could still control myself, but there are people out there that couldn’t. Thus, why disallow media outlets that don’t infringe on anyone’s rights? Sure there are the 1/100,000 crazies that take it too far, but that outweighs the potential problems with making certain types of porn illegal.

How is it that these games exist in Japan, along with all the rape-based hentai?  Does Japan have different views on rape than the West?

I’m not a fan of the game, but anything that makes the hate-group known as American Feminism (like Equality Now) upset makes me happy.

  172. Murdats says:

No, rape fantasy is pretty common in the west, but the west tend to be very ashamed of themselves so there is no way anyone would make it for fear of the backlash (look what happens when americans hear about it and its not even available there) and no one would buy it for fear of discovery.

I also don’t like rape fantasy, but I neither like furries, BDSM or a huge array of other fetishes, just because I find them strange and unusual does not mean I should judge them as wrong, disgusting maybe but it just means its not my thing.

Just like because I really don’t like the thought of engaging in gay sex does not mean I have a problem with those who do, its just not for me and those who condem peoples healthy but different fantasies may not realise it but you are following the same thought patterns as those who feel it is fine to ban gay relationships.

  173. Werrick says:

The idea behind the game disgusts me… but I’ve never played it, I’ve never even seen it, I don’t know anything about it beyond the name and what I’ve read online. It sounds repugnant.

That being said… Japanese companies, in Japan, marketing their product (which doesn’t actually cause any real harm, regardless of how off-putting it may be) to Japanese citizens and operating within the confines of Japanese law can do whatever they god-damn well please.

Despite the fact that some "feminists" seem to think that they have the god-given right to behave as though their sensibilities should be able to dictate the behaviour of others, half a world away.

  174. GoodRobotUs says:

Better still, the developer is getting stick for it from a country the game wasn’t even supposed to be sold in, and it doesn’t export to, the person making it available was a third party.

I may or may not agree with the concept of the game, I really can’t be bothered with getting into that argument again, but, certainly, it’s hardly the developers fault if someone else starts selling it abroad, and it’s hardly the place of people in the US to dictate to Japan, it’s bad enough having them try to do it to India with their software.

  175. Bennett Beeny says:

For goodness sake!  It’s a GAME!

No one is stalking, no one is raping, no one is getting raped.  The ‘people’ involved in the ‘stalking and rape’ are computer code, as is the stalking and the rape.  It’s all little 1s and 0s that make calculations in a metal box for entertainment.  Now we can argue all day about whether we think such entertainment is worthy, but that is subjective.  If someone wants to make and sell such a game, that’s entirely their prerogative.  If we don’t like it, no one is forcing us to buy it.

  176. MechaTama31 says:

It’s easy.  Nobody in the mainstream media will question what they say.  And nobody on the freedom side of the issue dares correct them, because they don’t want to seem to be supporting rape, in an indirect and stupid, but still potentially politically damaging way.

  177. TBoneTony says:

I also found this piece of information a bit iffy.

"Players earn points for acts of sexual violence, including stalking girls on commuter trains, raping virgins and their mothers, and forcing females to get abortions, according to the group’s online statement."

like…this has slander and lies printed all over it. HOW COME CAN THEY SAY THAT ABOUT A GAME WHICH THEY HAVE NOT PLAYED????
